Austin: Live Center Stage

I dare you to show me a woman who doesn’t secretly love Center Stage. The movie brings out the inner ballerina in all of us, simultaneously showing the challenges and beauty behind ballet. Plus romance. And rule-breaking. Without Black Swan creepiness and sans toenail shots. Hell, I even love Center Stage 2: Turn It Up, probably mostly because I have a girl crush on the female lead. And I want her abs. Anyway, the Austin Film Festival and Ballet Austin are hosting a special screening of Center Stage followed by free admission to Ballet class after the film on Sunday, July 24th at Butler Dance Education Center at Ballet Austin.

The screening is at Ballet Austin’s AustinVentures StudioTheater on Sunday at 3pm. Tickets are $10 (free for AFF members with RSVP) at Bonus! a pair of ballet shoes signed by the Ballet Austin Company will be given away to a lucky audience winner.

All proceeds benefit the Ballet Austin Academy Scholarship Program.

The Perfect Jeweled Sandals (Confession: I Bought Them)

Fibi & Clo sandals

I mean, how could I resist? They’re unique with the swoop of jewel, the perfect dressy or casual flat summer sandals. With shorts they sass up a look; with a fancy dress they blend in perfectly and keep your feet comfy. Guess how much they cost? $45.

AND if you head to to order them, and enter “Lyssa” in the referral code box, they’ll include a free piece of jewelry with your order!

What’s Fibi & Clo? Well because it’s fabulous, naturally it has an Austin connection. Founder AnaLiza Alba was born in Corpus Christi, but graduated from The University of Texas at Austin before moving to Manhattan. Though living in New York was her dream, she yearned for an idea that would get her home without getting in the way of a career she loved.

So one day at brunch, inspiration struck: she would develop a line of sandals that she could take to Texas for trunk shows—like tupperware parties, but with shoes. “I realized what a great time I was having at brunch, and that an atmosphere where you are surrounded by friends and food is not only perfect brunching atmosphere, but also perfect for shopping.” Fibi & Clo (the names of her two cats) was born, and with the Smoke Cascade sandal, she’s found a winner. Plus, Lucky mag raved over her fabulous but cheap summer sandals!

Thanks to Lindley at Korcula for the find, and check out the other shoes Lindley mentions in her summer staples post:Slip on sneakers

Love! Bensimon Elastique slip-ons. $58.

Austin: Ticket Giveaway to Falling Skies Premiere!

My TV style is more Gossip Girl than Heroes, more nighttime soap than alien invasion—although I did love X Files back in the day, even though I had to leave the room for the creepy opener music or else I’d have nightmares.

However, TNT is introducing a new alien invasion show called FALLING SKIES, where In the devastating wake of an all-out invasion of the planet by an alien military force, ordinary people must do extraordinary things to survive. It sounds pretty interesting, and Gossip Girl is on summer hiatus anyway. Starring Noah Wyle (that’s the hot ER doc) and produced by Steven Spielberg, like it or not the show is gonna be a hit because everything the man touches turns to gold (excepting Hook, which hardly even captured the fancy of 10-year-old me).

Falling Skies banner

FALLING SKIES launches Sunday, June 19 at 8pm CST, but YOU can catch it before anyone else at the Arbor by entering to win tickets here! I have 5 pairs of tickets to the VIP Screening on Thursday June 9th, all you need to do is a leave a comment below with the name of your current favorite TV show. The female star of the show, Moon Bloodgood, will make an appearance and do a Q&A, plus you get free popcorn and sodas (don’t drink the sugar water)!

What’s the show about? Synopsis:

FALLING SKIES opens in the chaotic aftermath of an alien attack that has left most of the world completely incapacitated. In the six months since the initial invasion, the few remaining survivors have banded together outside major cities to begin the difficult task of fighting back. Each day is a test of survival as citizen soldiers work to protect the people in their care while also engaging in an insurgency campaign against the occupying alien force, whose nature and purpose remains a mystery. At the center of FALLING SKIES is Tom Mason (Wyle), a Boston history professor whose family has been torn apart. Tom must now put his extensive knowledge of military history to the test as second in command of the 2nd Massachusetts, a regiment of resistance fighters protecting a large group of civilian survivors.

Moon Bloodgood stars as Anne Glass, a pediatrician who works with the surviving children to help them cope with the traumatic upheaval in their lives. The series focuses on the resilience of the survivors and their determination to maintain their humanity when all else has been destroyed. It also explores the ties that bind people together in the most difficult of circumstances, as well as the potential for humans to turn on each other when the struggle to survive threatens to give way to desperation.

“One of the most intriguing aspects of FALLING SKIES is that the invasion itself has already occurred as we catch up with the human resistance,” said co-executive producer and writer Mark Verheiden. “Six months in, shock has turned to resolve as the survivors gather to form a plan of attack. The mystery of the alien plan gradually becomes clearer over the course of the season, but not in a way the human resistance could have predicted.”  The aliens in FALLING SKIES are as mysterious as they are merciless. They are highly intelligent and use military-like tactics, which makes them an overwhelming force against the 2nd Mass.  They are fast, strong, extremely intelligent and very difficult to kill.

Intrigued yet? Enter to win a pair of VIP tix! What’s your fave TV show? Leave it in the comments before Tuesday, 5PM CST, as your entry!

Austin: Giveaway! Tix to Advance Screening of Forks Over Knives

“The answer is so simple it’s criminal: people starting to take responsibility for their health.”

This trailer is for FORKS OVER KNIVES, a film examining the profound claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting our present menu of animal-based and processed foods*.

*You know that I am a meat-eatin’, raw milk-drinkin’, cheese-lovin’ omnivore. I don’t eat a lot of grains or sugar or corn or soy. I am very interested in health and wellness and firmly believe in the premise of the film: that diet, what you eat, can and WILL affect your health. When I first heard about this film, I loved the idea, but didn’t necessarily agree with the vegetarian/vegan message. That’s A-OK. What’s important here is the notion that processed foods are killing us, and we need to eat more whole foods, plant or animal based.

Back to the synopsis of the film … The major storyline traces the personal journeys of Dr. T. Colin Campbell, a nutritional biochemist from Cornell University (and yes, the controversial author of The China Study), and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, a former top surgeon at the world renowned Cleveland Clinic. Inspired by remarkable discoveries in their young careers, these men conducted several groundbreaking studies.

Their separate research led them to the same startling conclusion: degenerative diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even several forms of cancer, could almost always be prevented—and in many cases reversed—by adopting a whole foods, plant-based diet. Despite the profound implications of their findings, their work has remained relatively unknown to the public. Bringing these scientific concepts to life, cameras follow “reality patients” who have chronic conditions from heart disease to diabetes, and are taught by their doctors to adopt a whole foods plant-based diet as the primary approach to treat their ailments. The film features leading experts on health and tackles the issue of diet and disease in a way that will have people talking for years.

*GIVEAWAY* WIN one of FIVE pairs of tickets to an advanced screening on Monday, May 9th at The Regal Arbor in Austin. Just leave a comment below or email me at BEFORE Sunday, May 8th, at 6PM CST.
