There’s yoga, music, camping, dancing, delicious food … what isn’t to love about Yoga Rocks the Mountains, this weekend in Snowmass?

Yoga Workshop Schedule (full schedule here) … I’m just listing the classes with Aaron, my instructor at King Yoga, who I LOVE and who trains Lance Armstrong, so even if I didn’t ALREADY think so, he must be badass.

Aspen: King Yoga is Awesome

I’ve tried a lot of yogas–a Bikram devotee in Austin, I’ve dabbled in others as well. Here in Aspen, I’m just starting to try out yoga places, and first on my list was King Yoga in ABC, the Aspen Airport Business Center.

It’s got an outdated website (fix coming soon), a goofy logo, and an unassuming green exterior with those plastic race flags out front. Despite what could have been read as bad signs, I hit up Power Yoga with Aaron today, and it was 80 minutes of awesome.

They say:

POWER – This class kicks butt! A challenging sequence of postures designed to detox and strengthen the body in order to achieve balance.

All classes infuse Aaron’s music mix with cool colored lighting and heartfelt teaching to create the King Yoga Experience.”

I say:

Aaron is both soulful and skilled as an instructor, and the class was fast-paced but not overwhelming. It was a tough yoga practice, but with built-in breaks. By the end I was dripping in sweat, slightly sore, stretched, and totally relaxed. It felt wonderful. The Power Yoga was the perfect mix of meditation and play, stretch and strength, restorative and difficult.

I may be shifting away from the intensity of Bikram in my yoga practice, but I’m not in it for the gentle candlelit stretch of some yogas either, so this was the absolute perfect mix. Intense without being crazy, gentle without being boring.

Power Yoga, Tues noon-1:20p; Sat 9-10:20a (there are other yogas all the rest of the days of the week)

I’ll be doing the CrossFit Women’s Challenge (and winning it) Saturday morning, and may recover by hitting Empower Yoga for some free yoga to stretch out my soreness. Come Sunday, I can dance away the day for free!

Of course, there are tons of awesome shows this weekend too, but I’ll let Austin Eavesdropper tell you about those: Music and Parties This Week (there’s also Band of Heathens & Drew Smith at Antone’s for just $15 at the door).

(Side note: in 2 weeks, I will be participating in another CrossFit workout challenge called Fight Gone Bad, part of a national CrossFit workout. This one is gonna be outside on the Long Center veranda Sept 26th and will be AWESOME to see. You do max reps of 5 different exercises for a minute each, rest a minute, and go again, for three rounds. My last score was a 298. I’ve just gotta get over 300. Oh, and raise $150 for prostate cancer research and wounded warrior veterans’ funds. Donations, anyone? https://www.rapidreghost.com/fgb/php/frpage.php?frID=28618 )

Labor Day: Free Day of Yoga

It’s back! Most of Austin’s yoga studios are offering FREE classes Monday. All over town, all types of yogas. Here for details.

The schedule is MASSIVE, and they’ve divided it up into Morning / Afternoon / Evening classes, as well as have separate listings for Austin-vicinity places. My suggestion? Bikram at BYD: http://www.bydaustin.com. I made my mom go with me to last year’s Free Day of Yoga and she’s hooked; she attends Bikram 5 days a week and wrote about her love for it here. It’d be fun to do a double or triple day, trying out a few different styles.

Easy labor for Labor Day!

Whole Foods is where it’s at on Wednesday

Forget bars and clubs with their djs and ipods and take it back to the old school at Whole Foods downtown this Wednesday night.

First, hit the upper deck for a free Hip Hop Yoga workout sponsored by lululemon and taught by Meg from Kula Yoga. 6:30-7:30pm

Then, head downstairs to get in your singles minglin’ as Whole Foods hosts another singles night. Free samples abound all around the store, plus tables of wine and cheese, fondue, and live music. A friend who went last time says that people wear  silly nametags, start dancing on the patio, and there’s lots of low-key mingling. If you’re single, everyone knows grocery stores are a great place to meet a mate. If you’re not, free samples from Whole Foods never hurt! 6-9pm

(ps- on the salad bar, try the African ground beef stew thing–can’t remember the name–it’s awesome!!)

lululemon offers Free Fitness

Weird Wednesdays are back at lululemon, starting this afternoon with Brooke’s Bootcamp on top of Whole Foods from 6:30-7:30pm. Don’t know what Brooke’s Bootcamp entails, but sounds fun, and who wouldn’t want to hit the WF salad bar afterward?

Today also marks the first day you can shop lululemon online, so all you online-shopping-addicts (erm, uh, NOT ME) can get the fingers working on some workout gear. http://lululemon.com/shop/index.php … um, THANK GOD THIS IS AN APRIL FOOL’S JOKE. The 9-year-old KidPix design is a total throwback to the mid-nineties when everyone thought they could “design” a website. But does this mean that online shopping is also an April Fool’s joke? That does not make me happy.

As usual, the yoga-wear store on 6th & Lamar offers free Saturday yoga from 8:30-9:30am, this month Leigh of Love Yoga Co-op teaches.

Sunday is the first day for the new lululemon run group for ALL-level runners. Be at the store @ 9am for the inaugural run!

Weekend Watch: free yoga, crazy marathoners, and grand openings

lululemon on 6th & Lamar does free yoga classes taught by rotating instructors from around the city every Saturday morning, but they’re usually way too early for me. This time, however, they’re honoring the two crazy Canadians who are running a marathon a day to help save the environment, and they’re gonna be there doing some yoga! Check out Matt and Steph, who are completing an 11,000-mile run across Canada and around the USA, at www.runforoneplanet.com. Stretching it out for their impending 26.2 miles? Since I was planning on going to CrossFitAustin‘s Saturday team workout at 10am, I might just make the 8:30-9:30am call, where Yoga Yoga instructors are teaching this month.

If, and this will probably end up being me despite my best intentions, not even marathoners can get you out of bed, you’re in luck: lululemon is ALSO hosting a special yoga class Sunday night, January 18th @ 6pm – with those crazy runners.

Reward yourself for your hard work yoga-ing, crossfitting, running, whatever it may be, by attending the Grand Opening Party for Corey Michael Salon, downtown this Saturday at 6 pm. Across from Eddie V’s, Corey Michael is convenient, and this part is even more convenient: enjoy cocktails, music, food, networking, and even a red carpet. I went to an event recently where Corey Michael was doing makeovers, and not one to say no to letting someone play with my hair, I let one of their stylists “have at it. Do whatever you like.” While it wasn’t my fave style, at least she totally went for it and didn’t make me boring! Plus, she complimented me on my haircolor, which, we all know, I get done at Pink Salon. So if you go to the party and end up liking the stylists, mention Austin Tidbits (where I got all this info) when you book an appointment and receive $25 off any service!
