Austin: Gypsy Picnic

Gypsy Picnic flyer AUstin
In other words, 35 trailers in one place (Auditorium Shores) with $3 sample plates (steal!) in an all-out battle for culinary supremacy.
Perhaps best of all, the eats will be arranged geographically throughout the park, so if you forget where to find something you found you loved at this event, you can just figure out whether it was a SoCo or DT trailer and go from there. My money is on Kebabalicious, but I also advise you really give your belly a workout and go for at least 4 sample plates.

Austin: Fun Fun Fun Fest Parties

The first Fun Fun Fun Fest was in 2006, and the music-ish festival quickly became known as an only-in-Austin sort of festival that focuses on independent music and comedy in Waterloo Park. If it’s any indication, Weird Al Yankovic (of Amish Paradise fame … anyone?) is one of the acts. I didn’t even know he toured anymore! The Fest is put on by Transmission Entertainment, The Austinist, Giant Noise, Ground CTRL, Guerilla Suit, and Jakprints.

Austin: REALLY Fun Stuff This Weekend!

CuervoGames pic

CuervoGames

Holy sign-me-up! The CuervoGames are coming to Austin. What are the CuervoGames? Exactly what you’d think … tequila-fueled Cuervo-themed American Gladiators-style competition with food, music and more.  Teams of four can compete in the Barrel Roll, where competitors climb a Mayan Pyramid to capture a series of flags at the top, the Waterfall Climb, where teams scale a 20-foot rock climbing wall as they’re drenched by rushing water, the Highwire Harvest, where they test agave farming skills 30 feet in the air, or in the Margarita Madness, a messy race against the clock to make the ultimate cocktail. Cuervo’s “Ride the Lime” offers an on-site challenge (think mechanical bull) and FREE CuervoGames gear as they cheer on their favorite teams.  The event will also feature a FREE performance by the Old 97’s.

Think that sounds awesome? The winning team will earn a FREE trip to Las Vegas on Halloween weekend for the CuervoGames National Finals.

Now that is awesome. For more info/to pre-register a team, visit Cuervo’s Facebook page.

Saturday, Cross streets of W. 4th and Guadalupe St, 4p-11p, complete schedule on Facebook.

Austin Beer Week

The first Austin Beer Week, a week-long celebration of craft beer and the craft beer community, starts this Sunday, Oct. 24, and lasts through next weekend, Saturday, Oct. 30. Check out the website for a complete, jam-packed schedule of tastings, food and movie pairings, multi-course dinners, beer education, socials, contests, and some Keepin’ it Austin off-the-wall events. Seriously, I can’t do the events justice. GO to www.AustinBeerWeek.com and pick some beer fest fun! (OK fine, I will recommend the Inglorious Basterds screening at the Alamo with German-style Live Oak beer)

Austin Unscripted

The Austin Unscripted documentary project first contacted me via twitter–gotta love that–and once I found out it’s designed to capture Austinites’ thoughts about what it really means to keep Austin weird in a time of rapid growth and development, of course I was down. Sure, it’s sponsored by the historic preservation people, whom I sometimes disagree with when they encroach on personal property rights, but in general I’m down for talking Austin.

More details here: http://www.preservationnation.org/austinunscripted

Aspen: Oktoberfest. In September. Whatever.

Maybe it’s a smidge odd that the Second Annual Oktoberfest in Aspen is being celebrated at the end of September … but nonetheless, the Wienerstube celebrates German traditions with live music, authentic Austrian and Bavarian food, and, naturally, beer!

Aspen: Only 63 days ’til ski season … The Meeting

Ryan makes a lot of cameos on this blog ...

Although its name is sort of ominous, The Meeting is not. It’s the convergence of ski and snowboard (who see each other like step-siblings) and film and star athletes all in the little town of Aspen. Today through Sunday, The Meeting welcomes winter sport lovers, top athletes and renowned filmmakers with parties, a fashion show hosted by D&E, film screenings and the NEPSA Video Awards, in which local and professional athletes showcase their talent in often humorous short videos.

13 videos will be shown over the course of the weekend, including Chris Davenport’s “Australis: An Antarctic Ski Odyssey.” The movie, which screens Friday at 5:30p at the Wheeler, also is the first offering from Davenport’s film production company, Davenport MountainSport. The company has produced another film chronicling Davenport’s (successful) attempt at summitting and skiing all 54 Colorado 14ers in a year, but that video hasn’t been released.

P.S. – Bone Thugs at Belly Up Saturday night. Just sayin’.

Austin: Four Seasons Dive in Movie [updated]

The Blind Side is ONLY my favorite movie ever. It has surpassed Top Gun, and nothing had surpassed Top Gun since I saw it in 1995. Or somewhere around then. Anyway, this fall the Four Seasons is hosting Dive in Movies (like Deep Eddy’s, only better, because it’s the FOUR SEASONS) where you can lounge by the pool. With a cocktail.

THIS Friday, September 3rd, at 8:30pm. Kick off college and pro football season with the best football movie ever. Poolside screen, complimentary popcorn, themed cocktails, and a candy bar. Sign me up.

GAH, Kerri is so on the ball she commented on this post almost as soon as I pressed “Publish.” Here are the rest of the Dive-In Movie Dates. For the record, K, it ALREADY said “this fall” which implies there are more. Anyway, without further ado, the rest of the schedule:

Sunday, September 5: Transformers 2

Friday, September 24: Night at the Museum 2

Friday, October 8: Iron Man 2

Friday, October 22: Clash of the Titans

Austin: Weekend!

How excited are you for Step Up 3D?

I’m seeing it tonight. After happy hour where I plan on trying some new Thirsty Planet beer.

Yep, Austin has a new brewery–Thirsty Planet–that has three beers: a super-hoppy Buckethead IPA (I won’t be trying that), a 50/50 barley/red wheat Yellow Armadillo, and a malty Thirsty Goat Amber. Part of the proceeds from each beer go to different charities.

Then, tomorrow we’ll head to Salutation Nation free yoga at 9am for a nice streeeeetch before celebrating the Grand Opening of SicFit Austin, CrossFit Central’s underground training facility (“the next level”). BBQ, beer, and good cheer starts at 2pm.

Sunday I’m hoping for brunch.

Austin: Weekend Hops & Pops

Saturday: Hops

From 2-5 pm, taste your favorite (512) Ales plus
the newly re-released Belgian Style Strong Ale
(512) ONE.2

. Get three free tastes. Buy a pint glass for $5 and your new glass becomes the tasting glass (bigger tastes). I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Pecan Porter (pictured) but I’m pretty sure it’s a winter beer :-(

407 Radam, F200
(Between South 1st & South Congress
)

Sunday: Pops

Hopefully you already know Sunday is Father’s Day. Hit up the Dad Rocks concert at The Mohawk from 5-8pm with your pops and hear local bands English Teeth and Car Stereo (Wars), snap pics with Annie Ray, nosh on Frank hot dogs (coincidentally, my own pops is NAMED Frank, so that’s cool), and nab Tiff’s Treats, Waialua Soda Works Hawaiian sodas, and GoodPop Popsicles for dessert.

Children under 12 are free. Tickets are $20 from Front Gate, and the event directly benefits Austin Music Foundation.

Aspen: Um, duh? Food & Wine Classic Weekend

It’s this weekend, kids. If you didn’t have the $1,185 to buy the big tickets, or even the $295 to buy a 1-day pass (steal! if that’s your cup of tea anyway), you can still enjoy the Food & Wine melee with the rest. Word on the street is that there are over 100 private parties in addition to the official Food & Wine events, and the shops and stores along the mall are pulling out all the stops to get people inside (read: free wine and food).

Since I didn’t win two free passes from the plastics site, I’ll be wandering around town looking for cool stuff to participate in. I pretty much equate this to a fancier SXSW, where you don’t need anything but your own two feet to walk around and get into some fun parties and events.

I mean, Aspen is a small town. There are only so many places for celeb chefs Jacques Pepin, David Chang, Giada DeLaurentiis, Michael Symon, Morimoto, Thomas Keller, and Top Chef judges Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons to go …

From my short time here, I’d recommend they:

  • Get chippers at Paradise Bakery
  • Try Brexi Brasserie – it’s just across the street from the main part of the fest, and it’s AWESOME
  • Eat a burger + sweet potato fries from J Bar or Belly Up, both feature free-range meat and crisp fries
  • Get the Kale Salad at Peach’s Corner Cafe. People watch. Eat your delicious, refreshing salad.
  • Hike Aspen Mountain. You need to burn calories, and the view cannot. be. beat.
  • Visit Carl’s Pharmacy. A General Store throwback if I’ve ever seen one. You must go upstairs too.

Also, the newly-expanded Saturday Farmer’s Market opens this weekend. It’s located on E. Hopkins from Hunter to Galena and features produce, meats, and artisan crafts from across Colorado. I can’t wait to hit it up!

Last bit of advice for Food & Wine, from a festival-going, wine-drinking pro: Pace yourself. Drink lots of water. FIJI water is owned by an Aspen family and freely distributed within the festival, take advantage of it. Also, wear a huge, fashionable hat and sunscreen. Waking up hungover AND sunburned just adds insult to injury.

Aspen: Outside in Aspen

The first annual Outside in Aspen, a participatory adventure weekend, is this weekend, June 11 – 13! The weekend includes outfitter-led adventures, parties, and a symposium.  Professional adventure athletes like big mountain skier Chris Davenport, Olympic Gold Medalist Tyler Hamilton, Everest climber and photographer Jake Norton, and extreme kayaker Jesse Coombs, as well as Outside magazine personalities, will be hanging out in town. Leave No Trace is the non-profit event beneficiary.

To participate in the weekend, you can buy a $200 Activity Package ($100 for one day) that includes a ½ day activity (like rafting, mountain biking, hiking, and more–to view activity descriptions & schedule, click here) on Saturday and Sunday, entrance to the Welcome Party Friday at the Sky Hotel and Après Pool Party on Saturday at the Hotel Jerome, Adventure Athlete Panel Discussion and Lunch on Sunday at Base Camp.

If you’re just cruising around town, stop by Base Camp in the Gondola Plaza between 8am and 4pm to check out the Outside Magazine’s Gear of the Year along with all the latest from Eddie Bauer First Ascent and other sponsors. (Swag potential!)
