Austin Kidbits / Hill Country Ride Kick-Off Party

Thursday are perking back up after that nobody-does-anything-at-all lull over the holidays. Next week is going to be even bigger! Still, these two should keep you happy (houring).

Hill Country Ride for Aids 10th Anniversary Kick-Off Party at La Zona Rosa.

It’s for the Hill Country Ride for AIDS, a signature Austin event and the largest fundraiser in Central Texas for people living with HIV/AIDS. Doors open at 7, free food and music, cash bar. Come meet Riders and Donors while kicking it back and enjoying some tunes!

Austin Kidbits Birthday party

Wee, one of my fave stores that I won’t be shopping in for awhile (I’ve pulled products from them several times and LOVE their stuff and staff, but no babies are on my horizon) is hosting the Austin Kidbits birthday party, the stylish mama answer to Austin Tidbits. With cocktails and cupcakes from 6:30-8:30pm, guests will receive a 20 percent discount at Wee and next-door neighbor Finch.

Typical Thursday: Men’s Night at milk + honey

As usual, Thursday this week is filled with free events to party it up, but at least they’re all downtown!

Men’s Night at milk + honey, 5pm-8pm

Stop by SALON by milk + honey on Thursday from 5-8pm for an evening devoted to men. Complimentary chair massages, neck trims, and hair consultations. For the ladies, there will be complimentary makeup touch ups with Chad, the spa’s makeup artist. Beer + wine + snacks will be provided, and if you receive or schedule a hair cut that evening you’ll receive 15% off.

Holiday Window Lighting & Holiday Shopping Kickoff, 5-8pm

The rest of the 2nd Street District is buzzing too, with shopping specials, refreshments, and entertainment. Notables include Eliza Page hosting a holiday cocktail soiree to kick off the trunk show for Shaesby, and St. Bernard’s Sports celebrating its first anniversary by showing Teton Gravity Research’s movie Under the Influence at 7:30pm on an outdoor projector with food, drinks, giveaways, and raffle prizes.

Tribeza Issue Release Party, 6:30pm at BoConcept

Over on the other side of Second Street, Tribeza magazine launches its December issue with a local-celeb-studded croud including coverboy Taylor Kitsch of Friday Night Lights fame. I met him at a bar once and he was super sweet and easy to talk to. Most of the ten Golden people featured in the issue are supposed to be there, including local designer of Uchi and Belmont fame Michael Hsu, Texas Monthly legend Mike Levy, Women + Their Work director Chris Cowden (I wrote an article on her for Austin Woman magazine), and more. Also, I should mention that I really like BoConcept–their staff is SUPER friendly and their prices actually affordable!

Thursday is back to being Thursday

Last week, Wednesday was the new Thursday: jam-packed with events. This week, Thursday is back and bigger and better than ever … must be the holiday season! I’m torn! Which to go to?!

Magazine Issue Launch: Austin Monthly

Austin Monthly is launching their December COOL issue and the winter issue of Austin Monthly Home at a super eco-friendly home in Rollingwood. The party features a glimpse into an incredibly-designed home, as well as free food and drinks, per usual. I’m personally partial because I wrote an article for Austin Monthly Home this issue, but Rollingwood IS pretty far from me …

Free eyebrow shaping?!

Sometimes, you go to all these events at stores and boutiques and it becomes the same thing: little snacks on white napkins, wine in plastic cups made to look nice, and mini-makeovers. All of which are good things. But when you hear of an event with something entirely new, you get a little bit excited.

Enter “free eyebrow shaping by Sabia.”

Wildflower Organics hosts BLING IT ON! today from 5 – 8pm at the North Lamar location. Features a trunk show with jewelry by Catherine Nicole (met her last night at the Red River Flats event where we were both getting teased hairdos by Corey Michael Salon, LOVE some of her layered necklaces) and mini-makeovers and eyebrow shaping by Sabia. Organic libations will be provided by Emerald City Press.

This event offers some stellar things … If I wasn’t going to the second-to-last free Crossfit workout (sad), I’d definitely go!

Magazine Throwdown Thursday

Are you a Tribeza girl or Austin Monthly man? Because AM is hosting not one but TWO events this Thursday, while the ‘Bez is hosting just one event, and I’m not even sure the drinks are free this time around! Two of the events are just one block apart … oh the drama! Deets:

Tribeza Happy Hour at TASTE Select Wines

Taste Select Wines (downtown on Cesar Chavez) is a new eating/drinking concept in Austin. Part wine bar, part restaurant, part retail space, Taste is a sure way to satisfy your food and wine cravings. Join Tribeza for complimentary bites and great drink specials.
Time: 6-8pm

Austin Monthly at Second Street’s BoConcept

This one has the most sponsors, so I’d say it’ll be the biggest party if that’s what you’re into.

Last but not least, though least likely for me to attend:

Austin Monthly in the middle of nowhere at The Vineyard at Florence

I’m obviously way too lazy to type up all that info–besides, this way their graphic designer gets more mileage out of her work…

FREE Crossfit Workouts

So I’m running around Town Lake last night and stumble upon one of my closest friends supervising a Crossfit workout … what?! Oh, you mean I should have read the email I got from you? … Anyway, point is: more free Crossfit workouts–yay!

I’ve tried to explain Crossfit before and never been able to. I tried that Women’s-Only workout and it was fun; but I still couldn’t eloquently explain. So I’ll let my friend opening the Crossfit Austin gym do the talking:

These three pieces of explanation from the website sum Crossfit up the best:

  • “Crossfit consists of short, intense workouts involving total body (compound) movements and constant variation.”
  • ” … strength and conditioning system that is built on constantly varied, if not randomized, functional movements executed at high intensity. Our goal is to increase work capacity over broad time and modal domains. We train for efficiency and optimal performance in each of ten recognized fitness domains: Cardiovascular and Respiratory Endurance, Stamina, Strength, Flexibility, Power, Speed, Coordination, Agility, Balance, and Accuracy.”
  • “You will be trained in many fundamental functional movements.  You will participate in constantly changing workouts that combine body weight exercises, weightlifting, and other high-intensity drills that integrate cardio and strength challenges at the appropriate level.”

Basically, it’s a quick, tough workout designed to challenge different muscle groups with relatively simple exercises. The program is run by a Workout of the Day – WOD. You can do it solo or with the group, and until their gym opens, the fellas of Crossfit Austin (both attractive and single, BTW) are offering free workouts Monday through Friday (some mornings, some evenings) at Town Lake (under the bridge on S. First, just South of Town Lake, meet by the water fountains).

Schedule

Mondays 6:30-7:30 PM WOD Free Group Workout – Town Lake
Tuesdays 6:30-7:30 AM WOD Free Group Workout – Town Lake
Wednesdays 6:30-7:30 PM WOD Free Group Workout – Town Lake
Thursdays 6:30-7:30 PM WOD Free Group Workout – Town Lake
Fridays 6:30-7:30 AM WOD Free Group Workout – Town Lake
Saturdays 9:00-10:00 AM WOD Free Group Workout – Parking lot of 8708 S. Congress

Thursday: Steak or Fashion?

Steak

You might say the answer to that question divides along gender lines, but really, it’s a toss-up for me. Houston legend Perry’s Steakhouse and Grille hosts a Grand Opening dinner Thursday night with four courses and wine pairings from the restaurant’s exclusive private label. The restaurant is in the Norwood building where a bank used to be, and the old vault doubles as a wine cellar and seating area. Bad ass! Luckily for me, the $125 ticket makes my decision for me. (512) 474-6300.

Fashion

For the poorer of us, Soigné Boutique & Slate Men’s Apparel on Burnet Rd. are hosting mixing-and-mingling cocktail hour that also includes a Poppies Jewelry trunk show and Common Threadz fashion show.

7 pm – 9 pm. Complimentary cocktails, 20% off of all clothes and shoes, and 100% of Common Threadz clothing sales go directly back to the non-profit organization.

For every CommonThreadz t-shirt bought, the company: 1) educates and builds awareness for charities and causes related to the projects the community selects, 2) provides an orphan or vulnerable child a school uniform for each shirt sold, and 3) raises funds for the causes represented in the designs. After the organization’s wholesale cost for the shirts, 100% of remaining proceeds directly fund the charity selected for the t-shirt design.

Free drinks and socially-conscious tees? Sorry Perry’s, as much as I’d love your jumbo lump crabcake and perfectly seasoned filet, I’m gonna have to … well I have no choice. Sigh.

Tidbits or Tribeza? Tough Thursday!

I LOVE Austin Tidbits parties. They’re rare (quarterly?), obviously causing them to be more exciting than Tribeza parties, and they usually have fab gift bags and super-fashiony people, making them way more exciting.

Not that Tribeza parties don’t have fashiony people–and I will say they draw a fair man-crowd, whereas Tidbits men are randoms off the street and boyfriends–but their happy hours seem to be hit or miss. Maiko a few months ago with free sushi? Hit. Random apartment opening? Miss. This Thursday? Boutique. 50/50, leaning toward miss because it’s out in Westlake.

The Smackdown:

Austin Tidbits Fall Happy Hour

Locale: Downtown, Second Street at Eliza Page

Promises: “Dazzle,” gemstones, drinks, snacks

Time: 7–9pm

vs.

TRIBEZA Happy Hour

Locale: The Hip Chic (Village at Westlake, Bee Cave at 360)

Promises: exclusive peak into their new digs, models, DJ, food, cocktails

Time: 5:30-9pm

A Thursday of Free Jewelry Events

Yeah, a smidge random that there are TWO jewelry events this Thursday, but hey, we can roll with it. I won’t be at either, as I’ll be running the Nike Human Race training run I’ve come to love so dearly. But for those not pounding the pavement:

Design Your Own Necklace at Madewell

Visit the Domain this Thursday night to design your own necklace with Jeanne Kirkland of UrbanPosh jewelry (found at Eliza Page and Soigné) The necklace is free with any purchase of $100 or more. While at the store, Madewell will take $25 off any denim you buy! Complimentary Cocktails plus DJ Mahealani will be spinning tunes all night.

Date: Thursday, August 21st
Time: 6-9pm
Location: Madewell at the Domain (Across from North)
… so it’s not quite free ($100 purchase?!), but the cocktails are free ..

And then there’s the worldwide Anthony Nak launch at Eliza Page that everyone seems to be talking about. Jewelry definitely isn’t free, but cocktails and food are, so here’s the flyer:

Thirsty Thursdays – Runs, Events, & More

As the first Thursday of the month often goes, this one is jam-packed with things to do. Behold:

The Moonlight Margarita Run has only been around 4 years and has already turned into one of Austin’s most infamous running events. The Town Lake Trail Foundation hosts the 5K, with an 8pm start time, as a fundraiser. The post-race party features Tex-Mex food, mariachi music, and margaritas on the grounds of the American Legion Hall. The prices are steep: $85 for the run + party; $35 for the run only, or $55 for the party only.

For runners who want to run for free, check out the Nike Human Race training run at SIX lounge, 7pm.

If you prefer to give your credit card a workout, head to South Congress, where Prototype Vintage (which you’ll remember partnered with La Luz for a new space) is hosting a Grand Opening in conjunction with First Thursday. Officially called the Launch Pad Party, there will be an op-art photo booth, snacks, and something called a “sputnik space bar.”

For your beauty fix, Austin Monthly is hosting a party at Sana Boutique from 6-8pm to introduce Rae Cosmetics and its creator, Rochelle Rae. Wine and apps will be served. At that issue release party last week, I tried on some lip gloss and it was pretty spectacular–silky smooth, not sticky, and my friends raved about how good it made my lips look.

And for a stellar close to the evening, I have a friend, Greg Vendetti, playing a big show at Apple Bar at 10pm. He’s a pretty stinkin’ good singer-songwriter (who bills himself as pop-rock … can singer-songwriters do that?!). He has only been in Austin for about a year and has already made some waves on the music scene–his Stubbs gig landed him in the Statesman.
