Flah Flah Flah

The first Annual Austin Fleadh (Pronounced Flah, the proper Gaelic word for Festival) debuts this week on Wednesday, otherwise known as St. Patrick’s Day o10. It’s a wonder this city doesn’t spontaneously combust during SXSW with all the parties and booze flowing … I mean, I personally feel like I’m going to bust, so multiply that times a million and you have how Austin probably feels. UM, anyway, the Flah, as I prefer to call it, because if I write Fleadh I want to pronounce it like my dog has been de-flead, is at 4th and San Jacinto from noon to 10pm.

Rumor has it that there will be Free Guinness when the doors open at noon, and by rumor I mean confirmed truth they aren’t publicizing except that they are here and now. Alongside the temporarily free favorite beverage of Ireland, there will be traditional fare of fish and chips, meat pies, along with the Guinness and Harp.

Bands:

RSVP here.

(I’m pretty sure it doesn’t matter)

Reminder: SXSW Spreadsheet

I’m so psyched so many of you are using the SXSW 2010 Free Party spreadsheet! Just wanted to remind you that it’s constantly updated as I find out about new parties, so make sure you’re checking this version: https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Asjskwdlt0podDk4V2R6T1VScHNGa05kQ0hyd2Y4d3c&hl=en

Some weird “Copy of SXSW Spreadsheet” babies have started showing up in my google docs, which is cool if you want the bastard version, but for the bright, shiny, constantly-up-to-date copy, you gotta click on the link above. :-)

HAPPY SXSW!!

Oh, and because this party is usual on everyone’s Favorites list:

SXSWXSWSXSXSWXSW

See, with all the buzz, I don’t even need to put the letters in the right order and you know what I’m talking about. Obviously you’ve seen my ridiculously large and always growing FREE PARTY SPREADSHEET. But because the criteria are so strict to get on that puppy (free party, must offer free food and/or booze), sometimes I don’t get to write about some of the other sweet things that cross my inbox. Mainly, stellar pitches from publicists looking to get their bands lots of PR during the hugest music festival ever.

A sampling of a few that sound good to me (but, let’s face it, I probably won’t go see because I’ll be getting drunk/stuffed/my swag on at the free booze/food/swag parties):

Bands: Apteka, Monarchs, Mull Historical Society, Derek Hoke, Jacob Jones, Francis

Breakdown:

1) My all-time favorite publicist sends this over:

Apteka is the Chicago shoegaze collective that beat NASA’s ass. Apteka came together through a shared affinity for volume and psychedelia in the summer of love ‘06. While on tour opening for front 242 in the fall of ‘05, guitarist/vocalist Adam Lukas met musical kindred spirit Dino Balocchi and compared Big Muff fuzz pedals. They recruited Jesse Hozeny, a human metronome with a penchant for being rather abusive to his drum kit. So hard does Jesse hit that he, in fact, employs titanium core drums sticks. That’s what they use on the space shuttle, mind you. Unbreakable they said. They were wrong. Aptkea 1, NASA 0.

The band completely smashes the misconception that wall-of-sound guitars equates to dull stage presence. Apteka are a rock outfit under swirling lights, swiping their Ride and My Bloody Valentine influences and injecting them with a heavy dose of PCP.  The group has a lot of awesomeness generally abounding. Have a listen – http://futuresounds.blogspot.com/2010/02/apteka.html

Apteka is playing two shows at SXSW, both on Thursday, March 18. They hit up the Buzzgrinder/Buddyhead Official SXSW Party at Annie’s West (706 West 6th Street) in the day and the Kill Red Rocket fantastic newgaze showcase at the Metropolis Apartments Pool (2200 S. Pleasant Valley) later that evening. That’s a pool party dudes, so you know you want to be there.

I say: see, with verbiage like that, how can the band not be awesome? Plus god knows how much Austinites love pool parties.

2) Monarchs’ lead singer reaches out:

Monarchs, a soulful roots-rock band based in Austin, is comprised of Celeste Griffin (lead singer), Alex Tomaino (guitar), Josh Halpern (drums), and Phil Ajjarpu (bass). This summer, Monarchs will record their first full length LP with producer Mike McCarthy (Spoon, Heartless Bastards). Monarchs Myspace Page. In the meantime, scope them at the official City of Austin Showcase on March 17th  @ 9PM @ The Ghost Room or one of these unofficial events:

Birmingham Plays SXSW Showcase
Friday, March 19th @ 12PM
Creekside Lounge
Stem and Leaf Showcase
Saturday, March 20th @ 5:00PM
Rainey Manor House Venue
90 I35 S
I say: I have a soft spot in my heart for bands that promote themselves (see: Achachay!)

3. Great Scots:

Colin MacIntyre is one of the UK’s most respected songwriters & performers who performs with a full band under the moniker ‘Mull Historical Society’. A multi-instrumentalist , writer and producer, MacIntyre hails from the Island of Mull (population: 2,000) off Scotland’s west coast. In just a year MacIntyre went from supporting The Strokes on their debut UK tour to selling-out the 2,000 capacity Shepherds Bush Empire, and touring with REM. SXSW 2010 is MacIntyre’s first time appearing at Austin.

http://www.colinmacintyre.com
@ twitter

Colin is to be showcasing at midnight, Saturday March 20th at the 18th Floor at the Hilton Garden Inn. Colin is also appearing Saturday daytime at Fado’s (obvi?).

I say: Sounds like he’s a big deal in Europe, can he hang here?

4. Electric Western Records Gives Good Promo:

Two separate publicists pitched me two separate artists from the same label, and both sounds great if you’re into Americana or Roots Rock. Check out:

4a: Derek Hoke’s forthcoming record, Goodbye Rock N Roll drops March 16th, during SXSW. His first release and establishes him as a strong country songwriter with shades of Patsy Cline, Buddy Holly, and Lyle Lovett intertwined.www.myspace.com/derekhoke. SXSW sched:

3/17 – SXSW – The Continental Club – Opening Early for SXSW! – Austin, TX
3/17 – SXSW – Electric Western Records Party @ The Hole In The Wall - Austin, TX
3/19 – SXSW – Flipnotics Coffeespace Cafe @ 4pm – Austin, TX
3/20 – SXSW – Thunderbird Party @ 5pm – Austin, TX
4b: Jacob Jones is a 25-year old singer songrwriter inspired by the music and lives of Johnny Cash, Townes Van Zandt, Bruce Springsteen and John Prine. http://www.myspace.com/jacobjonesmusic. His SXSW sched:
Mar 17 2010 – Paradise Cafe – SXSW Party – Austin, Texas (12:30pm)
Mar 17 2010 – Plush – SXSW Party – Austin, Texas (3pm)
Mar 17 2010 – Hole In The Wall – Electric Western & American Songwriter Magazine Present “GET YOUR GREEN ON!” – Austin, Texas (7pm)
Mar 19 2010 – Flipnotics Coffeespace – SXSW Party – Austin, Texas (3pm)
Mar 19 2010 – Thunderbird Coffee – SXSW Show – Austin, Texas (5pm)
I say: I love a good PR firm. Good job, Electric Western Records.

5. Francis is here / Francis just won’t quit

Swedish-band Francis has been shocking and awing American audiences with its unique brand of dark, brooding-indie rock. Their showcases include the Mike Galaxy BandPromote Showcase on 3/18 and the SonicBids showcase on 3/19.  With a new album in the works and a self-titled EP just released, don’t miss your chance to see these guys perform, complete with lead-singer Petra wandering through the audience as she belts out her lyrics, before they head back home to Sweden! Download or stream Francis’ music here: http://download.themusebox.net/francis/ /
Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/francisishere. Their SXSW sched:

3/18 – SXSW – Mike Galaxy Presents BandPromote Showcase, 12 noon – Guero’s 1412 S Congress, Austin, TX
3/18 – SXSW – MuseBox Showcase, 5 PM – Rusty Spurs 405 E 7th St, Austin, TX
3/19 – SXSW – Official SXSW Showcase, 12 AM – Friends Bar 208 E 6th St, Austin, TX
3/19 – SXSW – Sonicbids Showcase, 4:30 PM – Maggie Mae’s Upstairs 323 E 6th St, Austin, T
3/20 – SXSW – Sweden Goes SXSW Party, 2 PM – Antone’s 213 W 5th St, Austin, TX

… see? Even if I don’t know jack about music, I can come off looking cool when publicists feed me all the right info. Thanks, guys! ;-)

Let the madness begin: SXSW 2010

It appears the SXSW media frenzy has come earlier than usual this year. It’s just less than a month out, but the twitter/blogger/media buzz is already loud and, well, buzzing. So I’ve come to your rescue, this is life in austin readers, and put together the beginnings of a spreadsheet:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Asjskwdlt0podDk4V2R6T1VScHNGa05kQ0hyd2Y4d3c&hl=en

I will be updating it as more and more free parties are announced.

Like all my posts, I’m only listing parties I’d go to. The spreadsheet also only has parties that are FREE and OPEN TO ANYONE (though you may need to RSVP), as well as offer something for free–food, booze, t-shirts, etc. Let’s face it (blasphemy alert): I don’t go to SXSW for the music, I go for the crazy atmosphere and energy of all the revelers, not just the bands. So I’m looking for more than my fave band (though Fader Fort usually hosts a few of those), I’m looking for other goodies too.

Sweeping SXSW generalizations:

  • Interactive has the best night/happy hour parties. Great for girls, because it’s mostly dudes. Usually the best swag too. My fave days of SXSW.
  • Film has some really cool, really big premieres that anyone can get into for $8. Worth waiting in line. Know little to nothing about film parties. Do they not happen?
  • Music is the big enchilada, and features stacked day parties. It can be harder to find free parties and booze at night.

Here are my Top Ten SXSW Recommendations:

  1. Decide and commit to:
    • GO BIG: hit tons of events every night
    • GO MEDIUM: hit just one event every night
    • GO WEEKEND WARRIOR: just hit the music festival. For this, you pretty much need only walk down East Sixth during the day to find free booze and food. You’re on your own at night, but you’ll likely be exhausted and too drunk to really know if you start at noon, so do that.
  2. Drink lots of water. 1:1 with booze especially as the hours wear on. Your hangover will thank you.
  3. RSVP to every single party you mightpossiblymaybeI’llthinkaboutitletyouknow attend. Much better to be a no-show than a no-go at the door.
  4. Get on twitter. Make friends.
  5. Charge your cell. You want to meet up with your (new) friends.
  6. Wear comfortable shoes.
  7. Wear sunscreen. It’s hot.
  8. Eat. Food is free or cheap, and plentiful. Kebabalicious rocks, they should have two trucks up by SXSW (7th & San Jacinto, 2ndish & Congress).
  9. Sleep 8 hours every night. See: #s 2, 6, 7
  10. Enjoy the street scene. There’s nothing else like it. (In other words, don’t bitch, don’t be a drama queen, and enjoy your free beer!)

Other sources for info:

And that’s it. Go out into the wide, wide SXSW world, grasshoppers. Use this spreadsheet: https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Asjskwdlt0podDk4V2R6T1VScHNGa05kQ0hyd2Y4d3c&hl=en

SXSW Interactive Panel Picker & Me

Warning: shameless self-promotion ahead. Please help my SXSW Panel get voted into SXSW 2010! http://panelpicker.sxsw.com/ideas/view/3405

Austin Post’s Proposed SXSW Interactive Panel – Newspaper v. Oldspaper: Redefining The Local News

If people can write it, shoot it, video it, twitter it, and post it, does that make it news? Real-time news by, of, and for the people is redefining journalism. What do new newspapers look like, how do they work, and can they be trusted?

We propose to answer (or at least discuss) the following questions:

  1. How do we define news?
  2. How do you establish credibility?
  3. How can twitter be a news source?
  4. What happens to the role of a traditional reporter?
  5. How are articles edited and fact-checked?
  6. How does the notion of real-time news change journalism?
  7. What will happen to “old,” established newspapers?
  8. What is Austin Post’s revenue model?
  9. Is this hyperlocal crowd-sourcing contributing to the dumbing-down of America?
  10. Is Austin Post the harbinger of evil?

I’d appreciate your help in getting our panel into 2010 SXSW Interactive. Again, you can vote for it here:

SolarPump: an American icon in Denmark

Our beloved hometown festival, South by Southwest, is apparently sponsoring this crazy new solar-technology pump that charges electric scooters at the Roskilde Festival. Confused yet?

Here are the players:

SXSW – Duh. Our giant interactive/film/music festival.

Roskilde Festival – Held just outside of Copenhagen, Denmark (July 2 – 5, 2009), the annual Roskilde Festival is one of the largest music festivals in Europe. Created in 1971 by two high school students, it was adopted by the Roskilde Foundation in 1972 as a non-profit organization for the development and support of music, culture and humanism. Over four days and nights of music, the 2009 event will feature over 180 bands on six stages. Headlining artists include: Coldplay, Oasis, Nine Inch Nails, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, The Mars Volta, Social Distortion, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Glasvegas, M. Ward, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Royksopp, Lily Allen and Trentemøller among many, many more.

Sol Design Lab – Based in Austin, Texas, projects include solar charging stations, sustainable design for educational and cultural centers in Northeastern Brazil, solar powered bike trailers for arts festivals, Green Map and carbon footprint work, and large-scale outdoor murals. Sol Design Lab’s mission is to create interactive and inspiring solutions for urban sustainability, public art, and design.

SolarPump™ - created in February 2009 by Beth Ferguson, an MFA candidate at the University of Texas at Austin, the intention is to help people re-imagine the future of transportation by showing solar powered mobility in action. Using the reclaimed body of a 1950s gas station pump retrofitted with solar panels, she installed an innovative system to harness solar energy to charge electric scooters, laptops, cell phones, cameras, etc. (any item that uses a standard electric plug). In consultation with SXSW staff, Ferguson redesigned and modified the Pump to be truly portable, temporary, and suitable for outdoor events.

OK, so the story: SXSW partners with Roskilde to try out the Sol Design Lab SolarPump. Not so hard now, right?

At Roskilde, electric scooters that members of the media can use to travel back and forth from the Media Village (in the center of the festival grounds) to the Press Center about a mile away (where the media can use the facilities to file stories) will be powered by the SolarPump, which has mechanims to measure time remaining, battery charged, and so on.

Basically, they’re testing it out, and generating buzz because festivalgoers are going to be curious as to what the heck an iconic ’50s gas pump is doing in the middle of their festival. Eve McArthur, Operations Director at SXSW, said, “We were attracted to the SolarPump™ because it had humor and was a visual pun, and even in the planning stages, the project proved itself to be a conversation starter, sparking discussion about clean energy and possibilities for artistic expression within the medium.”

I can only imagine downtown Austin next March buzzing around with zillions of electric scooters stopping to fuel up at SolarPumps … laced with iPhone charging stations, of course.

SXSW 2009: Saturday’s Schedule

I’m in Houston for Beer Bike, our biggest, weirdest event where people start boozing at 6am. But here I am at a Keggs ‘n Eggs party, making sure the good people in Austin know what to do today. I would recommend a Venti Starbucks coffee with whisky, but that’s just me. Anyway, the top 5 for today:

1)  Rachael Ray Feedback Party at Maggie Mae’s. Love her or hate her, doesn’t matter, get to her party early and you’ll still have to wait in line but it’s totally worth it because OMG the food! Bourbon BBQ chicken last year blew me away. Plus good drinks like mojitos and buzz band like Hold Steady, New York Dolls, Bob Schneider, The Cringe, and more. noon-5pm

2)  Rolling Stone Knuckle Rumbler at Peckerheads. It’s one of the nation’s most iconoic magaines plus free RED Light Energy Drink, Sailor Jerry’s Rum, Sweet Leaf Tea, Taco Cabana, Southern Comfort Happy Hour, goodies from Gelaskins. The STELLAR lineup includes Lady Sovereign and a “Special Guest.” 1-7pm

3) Restop SXSW 2009 at Copa. Listed only for the humor of this: ”Jew-food flown in from New York City.” Free drinks, bagels, lox & free flasks to the first 50 people. JDub bands Golem, Deleon, Girls in Trouble, and friends, Fools Gold Rafi.1pm-?

4) If you’ve got an invite, you must hit Perez Hilton’s One Night in Austin. Despite the questionable choice of Beyonce-baby-sis Solange, the rest of his diva-themed lineup looks great.

5)  The Big One at the do512 Compund on S Lamar. The website/calendar/go-to guide has really come into its own this year, and is throwing a party with Sweet Leaf, Lone Star Beer, Savvy Vodka, and Rozone Productions. Unfortunately, it’s a destination as it’snot anywhere close to 6th. 2:30p-10p

March 21, 2009

(512) Brewing Spring Open House

As if SXSW didn’t offer enough free booze and tunes, local brewery (512) is having their Spring Open House on Saturday. Taste ALL the (512) Ales plus the latest offering, the (512) ALT from 2-5 pm.

Live Music with Danny Fast Fingers

407 Radam, F200 Austin, Texas, 78745, between South 1st & South Congress, 1 block south of Ben White
