Let’s talk accessories …

Since life has apparently shut down excepting New Year’s Eve promotions, I have to find something else to blog about. So I’m thinking about accessories. Mainly because I a) don’t have any to go with my stunning vintage dress that I will wear on said NYE, and b) I’m thinking of cute things to get my brother’s girlfriend for Christmas (yep, I know Dec 25 has passed, but luckily, the gf doesn’t fly in to Austin until tonight, so I’ve got TONS of time).

When I just need some accessories or cute clothes on the cheap, I’m apt to stop by Francesca’s at the Central Market shopping center at 38th and Lamar (there are more locations too). But truth is, I haven’t found anything there in over a year, so why do I keep going? Not sure. Hm.

A fave from when I was in Houston for cheap accessories was Charming Charlie, which just opened up down south by the DSW off Brodie. I think I’ll head there this afternoon … nothing like waiting until the day of to find something great! Really, this dress is awesome enough by itself.

My other thoughts would be Claire’s–cheesy mall store, yes, but has some on-trend things nonetheless–or Target–they’re doing so much with guest designers, but that takes away the Target price point–or somewhere a little Austin-ier like Parts & Labour, which has some really cool jewelry from local artists. Maybe not New Year’s Eve jewelry or brother’s girlfriend accessories though. How is Emerald’s accessory selection? I love their shoe selection–so mid-priced and cute!

Suggestions for cool, cheap-ish accessories anyone?

Post-Christmas Sales!!

Don’t know how good they’re gonna be, but I’m guessing that they’re gonna be even better than the 20-30% off of everything we saw before Christmas … plus, here are a few secret deals:

Saks Fifth Avenue

Today only, online and in store, designer wares are up to 75% off. Once the weekend hits, prices will be back up and not as discounted. SHOP TODAY!

Round Rock Outlets

This is one of my fave outlet malls around not only because it has a BCBG (my fave brand ever AND extra 15% off entire store today only!) but because it’s small enough to “stop by” without having to devote a day to it but still has a number of good stores. Click here for a list of sales by store!

MyFoxAustin says there are sales here:

Macy’s: up to 75 percent off on jewelry, bedding and appliances.

Wal-Mart: up to 80 percent off fall merchandise like jewelry, appliances and toys.

Circuit City: “markdowns” on laptops, digital cameras, flat-screen TVs and more (isn’t Circuit City going out of business? Why am I seeing “Now Hiring” signs?)

Neiman Marcus: 80 percent off fall clothing.

Toys R Us: up to 75 percent off toys

More include Fry’s, Best Buy, Sears, JCPenney … I’m expecting Black Friday 2, really. Um, I’m on saks.com, nordstrom.com and victoriassecret.com and it’s only 10 minutes in to 12/26 … make sure to use www.retailmenot.com if you’re shopping online for EXTRA discount codes!!

Golf Fashion Show or Achachay! at Red Eyed Fly?

Though I have long professed to hate golf, the last time I went to the driving range I’ll admit to having a lot of fun. For ladies who like to hit the links, Golfsmith is having its second Women’s Night tonight featuring a women-only shopping experience. The Arboretum store will have a fashion show, wine, and golf & tennis skill clinics and contests. Best part? Each attendee will receive a $25 cash card to use in the store! 6:30pm.

Achachay! at Red Eyed Fly: I like it not only because it rhymes, but because my little bro (all 21 years of him) is playing! Achachay! is a pretty badass band that also happens to own a tour bus called the Ho Bus that resides in my driveway, which I do not appreciate. But don’t let that distract from how great the show is going to be tonight! What do they sound like? Um, good? It’s a fun show, just come! 8:30-10pm, Red Eyed Fly, $5 cover.

Rumors! La Condesa + Walton’s

A new restaurant from the Lambert’s team called La Condesa (Mexican food?) is scheduled to open in February ’09, directly across from Lambert’s at the corner of Guadalupe and 2nd Street.  Chef Rene Ortiz of New York’s La Esquina (the corner, haha) will lead the restaurant and Lambert’s Executive Chef Larry McGuire will assist in the beginning. The restaurant will also feature a hip lounge called Malverde above it.

Over on West Sixth, Walton’s Fancy & Staple is moving in and will provide … um, flowers and a deli? Maybe they say it best:

“Walton’s Florist & Nursery has served the Austin & West Lake Hills area from our Bee Caves Road location. Construction is underway for a Walton’s downtown location at 609 W. 6th (across from Katz’s). We’ll offer downtown residents, businesses & visitors exquisite arrangements, beautiful bouquets, gift baskets, comprehensive design services, interior & outdoor plants for the home or office – all available for walk-in customers & by delivery. Walton’s downtown will include a traditional delicatessen & bakery (for folks on the go), & sidewalk café seating. Our Grand Opening is scheduled for late 2008. We look forward to fulfilling your fanciest floral, gift-giving & event design wishes.”

OH YEAH, and Lambert’s has a brunch?! Has anyone been?!

Reusable bags are all the rage …

… yes, but the problem with all these silly canvas totes is what to do with produce? You still get a bazillion of those little cheap baggies that you can’t even use as trash can liners (what I do with store plastic bags). Enter Austin company Blue Avocado (why?) with their Grocery Packs, including resuable produce bags!

The produce bags are just mesh and are washable. Perfect!

Here’s a sampling of the other bags:

Available online and at Whole Foods.

lululemon Grand Opening Downtown Friday

lululemon is known for soft, silky yoga wear, but they’ve expanded into a lifestyle brand and have been offering free yoga classes in Austin for quite some time. Friday, their new downtown store next to Sparks Cards & Gifts just off the corner of 6th & Lamar finally opens!!

There are free classes this weekend, including a free Crossfit workout (though I’m partial to my boys at Crossfit Austin, whose workout Saturday am is at 9am, 30 minutes later!). Schedule:

Their grand opening party is next Thursday and features a sushi chef and more! Details next week…

Twin Liquors jumps on the Spec’s/Grapevine Bandwagon

Which isn’t a bad thing. Turn shopping for liquor/beer/wine into shopping for the aforementioned plus cheese/crackers/gourmet food/chocolate and you’ve got yourself a whole afternoon–especially if it’s Friday and samples abound (hi, me, tipsy at Spec’s).

The new 15,000 square foot Twin Liquors Marketplace will be in the Hancock Center, just ripe for UT students. The center will be a 20-foot-long granite wine-tasting bar where the store will host daily wine and spirits tastings. It will also be the spot for educational seminars and other events. There’s also a 50-seat classroom for wine and pairing classes that can also be turned into a dining room for wine-pairing dinners. There’s also a dining room in the cellar?

Then there’s the humidor, with nearly 1,000 cigars. Well hello there fellas.

A grand opening event will take place in December … I’ll keep ya posted.

[ps: I so had this post written before this came out in the Statesman ... ugh.]

Magazine Throwdown Thursday

Are you a Tribeza girl or Austin Monthly man? Because AM is hosting not one but TWO events this Thursday, while the ‘Bez is hosting just one event, and I’m not even sure the drinks are free this time around! Two of the events are just one block apart … oh the drama! Deets:

Tribeza Happy Hour at TASTE Select Wines

Taste Select Wines (downtown on Cesar Chavez) is a new eating/drinking concept in Austin. Part wine bar, part restaurant, part retail space, Taste is a sure way to satisfy your food and wine cravings. Join Tribeza for complimentary bites and great drink specials.
Time: 6-8pm

Austin Monthly at Second Street’s BoConcept

This one has the most sponsors, so I’d say it’ll be the biggest party if that’s what you’re into.

Last but not least, though least likely for me to attend:

Austin Monthly in the middle of nowhere at The Vineyard at Florence

I’m obviously way too lazy to type up all that info–besides, this way their graphic designer gets more mileage out of her work…

RUMOR MILL: 12 Gage

I normally just post rumors on the sidebar over there, but this one is too juicy to relegate to the sidelines: Paul Petersen, legendary chef at The Gage Hotel in Marathon (full disclosure: I covered him in a 2007 article in Texas Home & Living) is rumored to be opening a restaurant in Austin called 12 Gage.

No one knows much more than that, though someone found a “9 months out” timeline dating back to September … which would put us at around 7 months out, which is actually more like 9 months in builder-speak. Some might remember Petersen’s Little Texas Bistro, an apparently charming and uber-popular spot in Buda that he closed to move to Alpine in order to take the Gage job in Marathon.

I can’t vouch for his food personally, but the man is passionate, creative, and very friendly, which is a good start. And everyone else raves about his food, so it’s gotta be good, right?

A little something extra: The line of salsas Peterson/The Gage debuted last year around this time is now for sale at local Central Markets. Three varieties of chunky, vegetable-based hot salsas will be available, including a “Ragin’ Serrano Rojo” and a “Venom Verde.” Petersen says, “I’ve used pretty simple ingredients like tomatoes, onions, garlic and peppers to come up with some really insanely good recipes.”

Look for the tattoo/hot-rod, Texas-inspired glass jars at Central Market.

I’m a Halloweenie

Last year I couldn’t think of anything clever enough, so for Halloween I went as my dog. She’s white with a huge black spot on her eye, so I wore all white, painted a huge black spot on my eye, and wore her collar and leash around my neck (at least people got a kick out of leading me around …) The problem with me is that I want an awesome costume, but I don’t care enough to spend a lot of time brainstorming about it, so then I’m left sans-costume. Or dressing as my dog.

Oh, and I refuse pre-packaged costumes. No creativity!

Tonight I think I’m headed to that vintage store on S. Congress next to Parts and Labour–New Bohemia maybe? and if there’s nothing there, maybe the big Goodwill at Mopac & 183 to get some inspiration. A friend found inspiration at Buffalo Exchange (Robin Hood) and another is going the prepackaged “Sexy” route with a stop at Tabu Lingerie … Major Trouble? Hahahaha. Also easy enough to make on your own … hmmmm …

I’ll keep you posted on my quest, but please post ideas/places to look if you’ve got good ones!!
