Free eyebrow shaping?!

Sometimes, you go to all these events at stores and boutiques and it becomes the same thing: little snacks on white napkins, wine in plastic cups made to look nice, and mini-makeovers. All of which are good things. But when you hear of an event with something entirely new, you get a little bit excited.

Enter “free eyebrow shaping by Sabia.”

Wildflower Organics hosts BLING IT ON! today from 5 – 8pm at the North Lamar location. Features a trunk show with jewelry by Catherine Nicole (met her last night at the Red River Flats event where we were both getting teased hairdos by Corey Michael Salon, LOVE some of her layered necklaces) and mini-makeovers and eyebrow shaping by Sabia. Organic libations will be provided by Emerald City Press.

This event offers some stellar things … If I wasn’t going to the second-to-last free Crossfit workout (sad), I’d definitely go!

Tonight is the Night! Blondes vs. Brunettes!

The event I’ve totally been pimping for weeks on end (is anyone sick of me hyping it yet?) is finally here! BLONDES VS. BRUNETTES KICK-OFF PARTY is tonight! I am so pumped.

You’ve got to pick up your wristband before 5pm today or you won’t get access to the free bar tab! Or get to skip the line at The Ranch. Obviously so worth it.

If you haven’t been reading my blog/the Outlaw List/Glossy, here are the details:

Blondes vs. Brunettes Kick-Off Party for Powder Puff Football features a coach/player bar tab. You will receive a Ranch wrist band for the launch party to get to the front of the line and the tab. The Ranch is our BvB official headquarters for all our team and post game happy hours. The game and practice emphasis is total fun. The girls really play, the guys really coach, and real referees work the game.

This event started in Washington DC as an opportunity for singles and young married couples to “do something” to help stop Alzheimer’s. The events, to date, have raised over $250,000 for Alzheimer’s education, support and awareness.

Blondes vs. Brunettes

Blondes vs. Brunettes is an epic battle of football prowess pitting the blonde vs. the brunette … raising money for Alzheimer’s research … and it’s coming to Austin this spring!

We all know how much I love flag football, but this gonna be even better! Already a success in Houston, Dallas, and DC, the charity football game is legit–months of practices, real coaches, intense training. I just can’t wait!

November 7th (two Fridays from now) is the official kickoff party at The Ranch. RSVP here: http://event.pingg.com/bvbaustin and there’s also contact information if you’re interested in playing or coaching!

Get involved with this event somehow, it’s gonna be incredible!!

Makers and Wakers and Fat Tires, oh my!

So it’s a big weekend, like you didn’t know (um, hello Texas vs. Missouri). But in case you missed the, well, boat on three majorly huge weekend-long events, here’s a rundown:

Maker Faire - Saturday & Sunday

So the Maker Faire expo thingy is a big crafty, makery, nerdy, trendy, roboty shindig. At the Travis County Expo Center, it’s a Maker’s delight. I don’t think they serve Maker’s though. They should. In any case, I hear it’s crazy-cool, so check it out this weekend if you can.

Tour de Fat – Sunday

Fat Tire + Bikes = Tour de Fat, no? New Belgium Brewing’s traveling celebration of the bike is pedaling into Fiesta Gardens for the final stop of 2008. The festival spreads the good word about the myriad benefits of cycling and celebrates mankind’s greatest invention – the bike. Wait, I thought this was about beer? Isn’t it put on by a brewery? Anyway, bring your bike and costume.

Waketoberfest – Friday, Saturday, Sunday

It’s not too chilly yet! Waketoberfest has perfect weather in Austin, and features demos from some of the best around the state. It runs Friday through Sunday at Pace Bend, and plenty of revelers and boarders just camp for the whole weekend!

Oh, and a bonus:

Texas Wine & Song Festival – Sunday

Despite the fact that I don’t particularly care for any of the acts playing this thing, it IS cool that it’s at the “Copper Tank Events Center,” aka the corner of 5th and Trinity that used to house the bar/brewery Copper Tank. The Second Annual Texas Wine & Song Festival is from 3–10pm.

Free Beer Fests Saturday + a workout

TONS of stuff going on this Saturday. So much that I can’t even remember what to blog about.

Well, to be honest, there are the only a few things I might be doing anyway (and don’t be fooled, I won’t be doing ALL of these):

Saturday morning: Try Crossfit Women’s Workout

Crossfit is all the rage these days, and no one can really explain to me what it is. I think it’s glorified personal training, but whatev–I’ll try it! I mean, I ran 11.5 miles at 7:30 am last Saturday, surely I can get up for a 9 am class, right?

The class is limited to 30 women, so RSVP to Nicole Holstrom at nicoleholstrom@crossfitcentral.com

Saturday noon: Play flag football!

This is just me, you guys can’t do it unless you sign up with Austin SSC to play. But send Hey! That’s Not My Flag! good thoughts.

Saturday afternoon: Stop by a beer festival?

Independence Brewery Anniversary Party

Free beer! Party! 5-9pm

Flying Saucer Fall Beer Festival

Hit the Triangle up from noon-10pm for massive amounts of beer–five tents, a 10-punch “tasting” card for $15 (um, is that $1.50 a beer? Sweeeet! but if it’s $1.50 a shot glass of beer … not so sweet)

North by Northwest Oktoberfest

Far as I can tell, it goes all weekend: all day, both days. Just like the real Oktoberfest, only not as many days of drunken debauchery. Oh, and it’s kid-friendly?

Saturday evening: Watch the UT game

Austin Sports & Social Club is having a viewing party at Soho with free food and cheap Bud Light (always Bud Light, ugh … they’re sponsored by them).

Saturday night: uh …

I don’t want to talk about it. I’ll probably be at Lanai. Maybe against my wishes, except that I love Lanai.

Hot Mama’s Room to Read

I’ve been partial to Hot Mama’s Espresso Bar ever since I wandered in one day to be greeted by an infectiously cheerful voice saying, “Hey there, hot mama!” without a hint of anything except genuine affection. I was sold. Then the coffee was great AND I got a Tacodeli breakfast taco … life is great. I haven’t been back, though, because it’s just not convenient to my house. However, if I weren’t tailgating* all day tomorrow (Go Rice!!), I’d be headed there for this benefit:

ROOM TO READ: FUNDRAISER AND BOOK DRIVE

September is National Literacy Month and the Austin chapter of Room to Read is celebrating with a kid-friendly fundraiser and book drive! Join us for delicious food, drinks, and snacks as well as a raffle and fun events.

Entertainment includes:

Miriam Gould, an Eastern folklore storyteller

The Lennings, Austin pop

a cappella group The Ransom Notes

blubber-making (what?!)

and local San Antonio author Diane Cantrell reading and signing her book Good-bye, Baby Max, which is a touching story about how one class copes with the loss of their classroom pet.

Room to Read is a nonprofit that partners with local communities throughoutthe developing world to establish schools, libraries, and other educational infrastructure. Through the opportunities that only an education can provide, we strive to break the cycle of poverty, one child at a time. Read more about the group here:http://www.roomtoread.org/

$10 suggested donation at the door. Gently used books for grades Pre-K through 5 will also be accepted for donation to local East Austin schools. Hot Mama’s is donating all proceeds from the event to the organization as well.

SATURDAY, September 20, 2-5 pm
Hot Mama’s Espresso
2401 E. 6th St.

*if tailgating is more your style, stop by the Austin SSC tailgate at 24th and San Jacinto … yeah, sounds far away to me too, but hey, they’re fun people so it’s probably worth it.

Drambuie Den Tonight & Tomorrow

TWO things to do on Tuesday?! Well, you could actually do this tonight too, as it runs both Monday and Tuesday. It seems like everyone is promoting this event, but then again, who doesn’t want to be a part of free drinks? Drambuie is doing up Pangaea both nights, but you know I love Austin Sports & Social Club, and they’re hosting Tuesday night, so that’s obviously the night to be there. :-)

Ultimate Frisbee

My brother says that I need to post on more topics, like ultimate frisbee. While his point is that he’d like to see a wider range of coverage, I’m not sure that’s what this is about. Since I’m not an ultimate frisbee afficionado, I don’t KNOW about ultimate frisbee in Austin. I’d happily play, but I’m not going to go searching for a game. I’d rather be playing football, volleyball, or basketball. My brother, on the other hand, loves to play ultimate frisbee and will organize games with his friends whenever he can.

Nevertheless, I did find out about ultimate frisbee. Apparently, there are pick-up games at Zilker every Monday and Friday night, starting around 6pm. I obviously have never been, so I can’t vouch for it, but there you go if you feel like playing some Ultimate.

Also, fencing is another thing I know nothing about. Not just the sport of fencing, but the act of building a fence. Again nevertheless, I found out about that as well. My dad and I, aided at various times by friends, built a fence. And we have Home Depot to thank for that, with their 8-foot panels of French Gothic Spaced Pickets. All we had to do was set some posts in concrete and screw the fences on! (I’m being a little sarcastic, it’s harder than it sounds, but overall not too difficult in the scheme of things) But now everytime I look at my fence, I feel a little bit proud. My point is, in the theme of doing things you don’t normally do, maybe you can hit the Home Depot and build something yourself too!

Super Sports Saturday – Free Bikram, Running, Volleyball

Saturday mornings aren’t for sleeping in anymore! Here’s the lineup for this weekend:

8 am: Nike+ Human Race training run at Starbucks (24th & Guadalupe)

… run 3 or 5 miles, drink coffee, hydrate with lots of water

10 am: FREE Bikram Yoga at Barton Springs Pool, southside, off Robert E. Lee.

… bring a yoga mat and towel, be prepared to sweat your face off. Can’t wait to see Wayne of YogaGroove again! Jump in Barton Springs to cool off–maybe on the free side if you aren’t planning on lounging for awhile. [This happens every Saturday in August--awesome!]

11:30 am: Head to Zilker sand volleyball courts.

Because it’s Saturday morning and you play EVERY Saturday morning.

… early crowd starts to dissipate because it suddenly got hot, you get onto the court immediately, play ten games in a row because you keep winning, and your stomach is slowly eating itself because you forgot to schedule in a food break.

1:30 pm: P. Terry’s never tasted so good.

… Maybe you’ll have some Flip Happy crepes too. You’re so freakin’ hungry by now.

Free Yoga 5pm Today at Seventh Street Yoga

This afternoon, Friday June 13th, Seventh Street Yoga (quite literally on 7th between West & Rio Grande) will be open from 4-7pm and offering a complimentary yoga class at 5pm. You can also shop–their boutique carries the exclusive collection from Zobha, as well as lululemon and Hardtail Forever.

I think this is the class they are offering:

Anusara or Flow
Anusara (a-nu-sar-a), means “flowing with Grace,” “going with the flow,” “following your heart.” Founded by John Friend in 1997, Anusara Yoga is a powerful hatha yoga system that unifies a Tantric philosophy of intrinsic Goodness with Universal Principles of Alignment™.

Currently, Anusara Yoga is one of the most popular and fastest growing yoga styles in the world.

Each class will have a different theme, centering around the Anusara method of Universal Principles of Alignment, for example, one class will focus on alignments in forward bend postures, another class will focus on alignments in standing postures, etc. Each class will begin with an Anusara invocation, a beautiful spiritual song as a devotional recognition of the universal Spirit within and around us, and end with Savasana or meditation.

I’ve missed Bikram Yoga since I haven’t been in two weeks, and I can’t decide if this will make me sadder going … but it is super-convenient, being downtown and all. If only I had a bike …
