Achachay! at Red Eyed Fly (yep, it rhymes)

Achachay! at Red Eyed Fly at 11:30pm. It costs $5 to get in. They only play for 40 minutes so you’ve got to get there early!

According to the lead singer:
Top ten reasons to come to the show tomorrow night (Garrett, consider this a convincing bailout suggestion email to be forwarded):
(1) – It’s Friday night and you need some funk in your life
(2) – The debut of TWO new songs. One is funky and one is dancy, both are achachay-y!
(3) – We’ve got merch you might want to buy. T-SHIRTS!
(4) – You’re going out anyway in the live music capital, and this is some DAMN GOOD local talent.
(5) – Drinks are cheap at the Red Eyed Fly.
(6) – You want to see our beautiful, smiling faces.
(7) – And Charlie’s completely non expressive face.
(8) – And you want to see Ryan drum in sunglasses.
(9) – What are Rock people anyway?
(10) – You’re going through an existential funk and you want to commiserate/celebrate it
Bring in all of your friends as well. The more people are there, the more fun it will be. Also, bring your dancing shoes and get ready to move. If you don’t know how to dance to our music you can take a cue from me on stage cause I’m always moving even if it’s just sliding back and forth with my boots.
I’m going because I’m going through an existential funk / I’m taking my time to define what I want / I’m told that if I live the questions and wait / I’ll be living out the answers some distant day …

After Dark Events!

If you’re heading from downtown, pop into Estilo, then stop in to Twin Liquors Marketplace in Hancock Center for a free wine tasting on your way up north, where you’re headed to a denim & margarita bar.

Estilo Art Show

Head to Estilo from 6-9p for an Art Show featuring the work of Stephanie Beard. David Garrido will be providing munchies–he launches his new restaurant, Garrido’s, in mid-May. Is it related to the 100-year-old Galveston staple known for the best seafood this side of, well, ever? The restaurant will be on Third St, near Mulberry, Blu, and the Austin Music Hall. Also enjoy cocktails, a live DJ, and hors d’oeuvres.

Then …

Wine Tasting

Then …

Pop by Madewell at the Domain Thursday night for $25 off jeans, complimentary hemming, custom stitching, and a margarita bar.

J. Crew’s older, less-preppy, more effortlessly chic sibling is hosting a celebration of all things denim, and it would behoove you stop by. Last time I was in, they had only two styles of jeans in lengths, which really put me off. Hemming, you see, will never be an issue for me, with my basketball/volleyball-player’s height. Nonetheless, if I had normal-length legs and/or lived up north, I’d definitely stop in for a look.

And then probably go down to the BCBG store (my fave brand of all time) for a stop at their sale racks … can’t beat 70% off.

7-9pm, The Domain

Don’t Bring Me Down Faux-Show

Local designer Rachel Fields and photographer Christina Shaffell created, styled, and shot a fictional band, then threw it a party. Friday at 8pm actual bands, filmmakers, some sort of fashiony thing, and photogs will celebrate the Faux Band. Whaaaaa?

Don't Bring Me Down

Rachel sounded cool enough when she emailed me, but Tolly at Austin Eavesdropper got a better handle on the whole thing, read her post about it here.

BFFs love free stuff!

BFF

I can’t decide what to be excited about the most:

a) Boy Band Karaoke (Quit Playing Games with My Heart was the first single I ever bought. Walmart, $1.99)

b) Goodie bags!!!!

c) $5 blowouts (gawd I love salon hair … Pink Salon!)

d) Embellish Nails! (why am I so obsessed with them?)

e) Girly drinks & treats–cosmos and cupcakes?!

Then, head downtown for Fashion Freakout II, the much-hyped fashion show at the Mohawk (912 Red River St. 482-8404). Prototype Vintage Design, New Bohemia, Buffalo Exchange, and Laced With Romance will dress models to strut down the catwalk, as well as offer clothing, jewelry and accessories for women and men. There will be DJ sets by Tweedy, McNeely, and Bigface with music from Hacienda. Pink Salon (we all know it’s my fave!!! LOVE Johanna!!) are doing hair and makeup.

Best Ladies Night Ever!

I’m heading to Washington, D.C. this weekend to see one of my longtime BFFs, so I’ll be getting a whole weekend of BFF QT! The least you can do it a night ;-)

Legally Blonde + Four Seasons = Perfect Match

Elle Woods wouldn’t want it any other way:

In honor of the UT Performing Arts Center’s presentation of Legally Blonde starting tonight and running through Sunday (Feb 3-8), The Spa at Four Seasons is offering a Legally Blonde and Beautiful package.  The package includes an essential manicure or pedicure, a glass of pink champagne, and a bottle of Creative Nail Designs nail polish to take home. The Legally Blonde spa package will be available the entire month of February, with manicures at $45 and pedicures $55–also a nice idea for Valentine’s pampering.

Reservations at 478-4500.

Make a Four Seasons evening of it and snag a drink in the Four Seasons Lobby Bar after your mani/pedi. Recently voted one of the top places to go celeb-spotting, you never know who you might see while sipping on some of the most creative cocktails in the city.  Then, head on downstrairs to enjoy their fabulous restaurant TRIO’s pre-theatre dining special. A three-course menu (app, entree, dessert + valet parking) at TRIO for $49 is a great deal any time, but is a perfect complement to the spa visit and the play. The popovers are pretty much worth $49 alone. Plus, they have Niman Ranch free-range steaks! And the beautiful patio overlooking Town Lake is divine.

To make a reservation, call TRIO at (512) 685-8300. Yum!

Thursday Scion House Party

Frankly, I’m confused about this Scion House Party thing. I know they’re supposed to be the pulse of the U.S. underground dance movement, but this House Party is at Beauty Bar … oh, you mean House like the music? Gah, I’m such a music dummy. Is anyone else going to see Sublime cover band Badfish this weekend? Because that’s my style …

Anyway, RSVP at www.scion.com/houseparty for the Thursday night show 10pm–2am at Beauty Bar. The Juan MacLean and Still Going (Rub ‘n’ Tug, Manthraxx) hit Austin’s Beauty Bar with opening DJ Ian Orth (Learning Secrets) for “a night of classic four-on-the-floor club thumpers.” Whatever that means.

First Love Second Chance Casting in Austin!

I have a very strict don’t date exes policy–after all, if it failed the first time, why would it work the second? Then again, I think I’ve dated most of my exes a good three or four times …

So when this came through my email, I had to post:

TV LAND’S FIRST LOVE, SECOND CHANCE CASTING NOW!

Ever wondered what happened to the one that got away? To your high school sweetheart or college love?

That’s the question at the heart of the new TV Land Program “First Love, Second Chance” which reunites former couples and gives them a glimpse of what life would have been like if they’d stayed together. In each one-hour episode, a former girlfriend and boyfriend who are currently single will be reunited. Will the passage of time and their differing life experiences have changed them beyond recognition? Will they be tempted once again by each other, or decide they can’t get far enough away?

“First Love, Second Chance” reveals whether true first love conquers all for the couples -or whether they discover that they had a lucky escape first time around!

If you are single, mid 30′s to mid to late 40′s and looking to reconnect with a past love, we want to hear from you!

If you’re interested in coming on our show please send us a brief synopsis of your story. Be as detailed as possible but try to limit your story to one paragraph. Please send it back to us at firstlovecasting@me.com ASAP to be considered for the show.

Casting Directors will be in the Austin area this weekend interviewing possible candidates.

Make sure to include:
1. When the relationship began and when it ended
2. Why you broke up
3. When the last time was that you were in contact with the person. Please include any and all contact information you have of them in order to aid us in the location process.
4. A current photo of yourself
5. All your contact information
- name, age and hometown
- your current location
- email address
- home and cell phone numbers
6. Any photos you have of the two of you as a couple.

… just keep in mind that you broke up for a reason!!

Free Week – Free live music all week!

FREE WEEK is from now until January 10th and is just a big week of free music! Emo’s, Beerland, and Transmission Entertainment worked together to coordinate the freeness, and do512 compiled a mega-list of all the shows that are free this week! Thanks!

Their Top Picks page lists most of the shows, but they’ve also labeled everything FREE WEEK!” on their site, so it’s super easy to figure out. This is like a mini-SXSW but with only Austin bands and sans expensive wristbands. So kind of awesome?

Tonight The Lemurs headline the show at Emo’s. Tomorrow, choose between What Made Milwaukee Famous, The Riverboat Gamblers, and Flametrick Subs … good new year’s weekend!

Man v. Food: Austin Edition

Man v. Food is Travel Channel’s new series where the host travels the country in search of big, bad food challenges, and it comes to Austin tonight at 10pm on ET.

From the channel:
In this week’s episode host Adam Richman is about to find out just how “big” food can be in Austin. His first stop is Round Rock Donuts, home of the 2 pound Texas Donut. Next it’s brisket, ribs, and sausage over an open pit at The Salt Lick BBQ.

The main event is the Don Juan Taco Eating Challenge at Austin’s own Juan in a Million. Adam must finish eight tacos to beat the record, which is currently held by the Hong Kong Hero since 2004.  Can he do it?

Holy cow I couldn’t even finish one Don Juan, how is it even possible for a man to consume 8–much less MORE than 8?!
“DON JUAN” – El Taco Grande
A secret combination of potato, egg, bacon and cheese in a deliciously hot tortilla. $3.60
That description cannot possibly convey the magnitude of the plate set before you when you order the Don Juan. It’s a PILE of that stuff almost as tall as your head, served with two tortillas. Like TWO tortillas is enough for that junk! It is ridiculous. And an incredibly hangover cure.
Other stops include: Fran’s Hamburgers, Big Top Candy Shop for chocolate-covered bacon, Hey Cupcake for a closer look at the giant cupcake that sits on top of the trailer, and  Amy’s Ice Cream for the most original ice cream on the menu – the Rusted Shut, featuring coffee ice cream, kahlua, biscotti and toffee.

Sneak a peak here, tune in at 10pm for the full show:

Typical Thursday: Men’s Night at milk + honey

As usual, Thursday this week is filled with free events to party it up, but at least they’re all downtown!

Men’s Night at milk + honey, 5pm-8pm

Stop by SALON by milk + honey on Thursday from 5-8pm for an evening devoted to men. Complimentary chair massages, neck trims, and hair consultations. For the ladies, there will be complimentary makeup touch ups with Chad, the spa’s makeup artist. Beer + wine + snacks will be provided, and if you receive or schedule a hair cut that evening you’ll receive 15% off.

Holiday Window Lighting & Holiday Shopping Kickoff, 5-8pm

The rest of the 2nd Street District is buzzing too, with shopping specials, refreshments, and entertainment. Notables include Eliza Page hosting a holiday cocktail soiree to kick off the trunk show for Shaesby, and St. Bernard’s Sports celebrating its first anniversary by showing Teton Gravity Research’s movie Under the Influence at 7:30pm on an outdoor projector with food, drinks, giveaways, and raffle prizes.

Tribeza Issue Release Party, 6:30pm at BoConcept

Over on the other side of Second Street, Tribeza magazine launches its December issue with a local-celeb-studded croud including coverboy Taylor Kitsch of Friday Night Lights fame. I met him at a bar once and he was super sweet and easy to talk to. Most of the ten Golden people featured in the issue are supposed to be there, including local designer of Uchi and Belmont fame Michael Hsu, Texas Monthly legend Mike Levy, Women + Their Work director Chris Cowden (I wrote an article on her for Austin Woman magazine), and more. Also, I should mention that I really like BoConcept–their staff is SUPER friendly and their prices actually affordable!
