Aspen: WOLFMOTHER

So it’s late notice, but WOLFMOTHER is playing at Belly Up tonight. Doors at 9p, show at 10. Tix are $50. Word on the street is that Wolfmother puts on one of the best live shows around, so the expense is probably worth it. Belly Up is a crazy-intimate venue, so seeing a show that’s notoriously good live so close is gonna be pretty freakin’ sweet.

I can’t stop saying WOLFMOTHER like they did on 101x awhile ago when Wolfmother came to Austin … it was like a deep baritone, overly dramatic WOLF…MOTHER. Hahaha.

So You Think You’re An Elite Athlete?

That’s right, CrossFitters and other people who think they are awesomely fit … there’s a new reality show called I Wanna Be a World Class Athlete! and they’re casting this summer. Sure, you’ll have to trek to get to an audition, but imagine the possibilities! They’re transforming individual competitive and recreational sports players into World Class Athletes.

They say that even if you’re not athletic and just want to transform your body and lifestyle by working out like the pros, you could be chosen for the show. Everyone has a shot!

The casting directors are looking for hungry, hardworking athletes ages 12 and older (competing in three categories — youth, high school, adult), who want to take their training to the next level in front of a national cable television audience, in hopes of landing their share of $1,000,000 in cash, prizes, and athletic scholarships and a chance to compete to win $1,000,000 on each of 10 episodes.

Thirty (30) real-world athletes and wanna be athletes  will be worked by a professional training staff on tough-to-complete training programs involving cardiovascular fitness, strength training, plyometric training, sport-specific skills, sport psychology, and proper nutrition. The show features athletes benefiting from using cutting edge technology, “high tech” training equipment, and special effects illustrating their performances.

And OH YEAH, the show’s producers are also seeking a female host with a background in health, fitness, and sports performance training.

Casting Calls (they must know how awesome we are down south with TWO calls in Texas!)

Minneapolis, Minnesota — August 6-8, 2010

Lovely on the Catwalk

Join Lovely Austin Boutique for their debut fashion show featuring exclusive “Lovely-Style” ensembles from cutting edge and trendy to vintage and timeless. While I’ve yet to visit the cute boutique on S. 1st street, check out this fantastic description one of the owners gave me:

We’re aiming for “Couture Consignment” and attempting to take the “thrifty mothball wading through racks of crap in search of the one treasure then needing to take a bath in Purell” feeling out of resale.

We also carry furniture, home décor-y types of coolness and pieces from local designers – both clothing and jewelry.  Oh…and my favorite: estate jewelry!

Come check out the mothball-free clothing with a fab fashion show and experience the warm ambiance of Blu Saturday night from 7-9pm*. Enjoy drink specials and the hip sounds of DJ 27.

January 23rd from 7-9pm / Blu Cafe Bar & Lounge, 360 Nueces St

Styling provided by J. Buccio Salon and MYKA Cosmetics.

*Even if you don’t go to the fashion show, be sure to stop by the Lovely Austin Boutique to scope out all their sweet finds!

Boy Toy: Sexy Improv Comedy (+ free beer)

Boy Toy

Every Saturday at 7pm at ColdTowne Theater (4803 Airport Blvd, next to I Luv Video), you can BYOB and laugh your ass off at humor more clever than T&A jokes–but just as laugh-out-loud, get-the-giggles funny.

Formed in late-2008 when a stray bolt of sex-lightning struck Austin’s ColdTowne Theater, improv comedy troupe Boy Toy (www.boytoyimprov.com) includes some of the funniest and most-innovative improvisers in the country. Among this dazzling troupe of funnykins are ColdTowne Conservatory teachers and graduates, an Air Sex World Champion, a World of Warcraft guru, a zip-line tour guide, the manager of a Starbucks, and “Dirty Baby,” leader of Austin’s only ukulele rock-and-roll band.

Boy Toy performs “The Harold,” the grandpappy of improv formats that intertwines organic games, scenes, and relationships into one big ball of sexy. For the month of September, Coldtowne Theater is providing FREE BEER for all of Boy Toy’s shows. Your last chance to get sexy and beer at the same time, for free, is this Saturday at 7pm.

Lucky for you, my sexy and beer-lovin’ This is Life in Austin readers, I have one VIP pass to give away. Now, there can only be one VIP per show, and you can let your imagine run on why. But this pass includes you and 2 guests, so you won’t be alone in your sexploitation (or sexploration? not sure). Enter to win by posting a comment below (preferably but not required related to either sex or beer), winner will be chosen at random Friday afternoon at 4pm.

Last Minute: This Afternoon, you don’t wanna miss…

… Concierto Bajo Las Estrellas, 5-10pm tonight at The Long Center for the Performing Arts’ City Terrace

As a sometimes Spanish speaker (as in, I can speak the Spanish but don’t very often), I get excited when I read things in Spanish. Even when they’re as simple as “Concert Under the Stars,” KAKW Univision 62′s celebration of the 5th annual “Premios Texas” awards. The FREE open-to-the-public  pre-party (the Awards are tomorrow night) has a live music lineup of nominated artists including El Guero y Su Banda Centenario (“Mejor Artista Vocal Masculino” – Best Male Vocal Artist), Foco Rojo (“Mejor Banda de Austin” – Best Austin Band) and La Clave de Mexico (“Mejor Banda de Austin”). Also set to perform are Austin-based mariachi band Mariachi Estrella and Mexican regional folk dance group Roy Lozano’s Ballet Folklorico. Making special appearances at the event will be “Premios Texas 2009” co-host Sissi, nominee Makano (“Mejor Artista Hip-hop/Urbano” and “Mejor Artista Revelacion”) and nominee Tati (“Mejor Artista Revelacion”). The final round of the talent show “Idolo del Pueblo” will also take place, with the winning finalist earning a trip to Miami to compete on the international TV show “Sabado Gigante” with Don Francisco.

So walk yourself on down to 701 W. Riverside Drive and enjoy some Latin beats tonight. Snag some nibbles from P. Terry’s or Whole Foods or anywhere else close and make it a picnic. Or just enjoy the tunes.

Fashion in this town ups the ante with 2 events

For such a hipster place, it can be hard to find clothes to wear in Austin. How to achieve that laid-back but perfectly-put-together look we’re so famous for? And keep our sweat stains from showing at the same time? The cool kids can shop SoCo’s vintage stores, but some of us just don’t have time or talent for that–it’s like a full-time job. Enter two new fashion events in Austin, one BIG and far-off, and one smaller but very soon.

The deets on Austin’s first Fashion Week have been released by Launch787:

Austin Fashion Week is July 13-19. It will feature ~120 events. Participating boutiques and salons will host one Austin-based designer. It’s free to attend most of the events, but you can also buy a “Passport to Fashion” starting Thursday morning through the official Austin Fashion Week website. Passports are $20 and give you a 10% discount at all of the participating boutiques and salons.

Then, the Austin Fashion Awards will take place on Sunday, July 19 from 5:30-9pm inside Dell Hall at the Long Center. Featuring fashion from the UT Fashion Design School, Project Runway’s Kayne and others, there’s also live music from The Octopus Project, Alpha Rev, Mike Relm, The Soldier Thread and Ume. Tickets are $39.

Then then, the Austin Fashion Awards After Party is Sunday, July 19 from 9pm until Midnight. At the Sky Lounge at Ashton on Town Lake, DJ Mike Relm of opening for Moby fame will spin amongst drinks from Tito’s and Sweet Leaf along with food from 2nd Street District restaurants. An EXTREMELY limited number of tickets will be available through FashionWeekAustin.com.

Austin Fashion Awards public voting will begin Thursday morning also through FashionWeekAustin.com. You can vote for your favorite boutiques, salons, designers, models, photographers, hair stylists and makeup artists. You decide who the winners are!

So there’s that. But then there’s also an awesome Trunk Show-stravanganza (I don’t want to weigh them down with just the trunk show moniker) this Sunday at United States Art Authority (near Spiderhouse) from 4-8pm. Basically a big girly playground, the event features clothes from ethical/sustainable-fabric designer René Geneva and jewelry from Leigh Elena. Makeup by Myka plus free samples of Myka’s sugar scrubs, free bang trims and quicky up-dos by Waterstone, new nail wraps by Pink Salon (where I get my hair did by my fave stylist Johanna, who I LOVE), plus Jay B. Sauceda snapping photos. Rounded out by Innocent Chocolate, snacks, and free mimosas, the event is going to be total fun–oh, and it benefits the Geneva Foundation for Women and the Arts™. Natch.
