Typical Thursday: Men’s Night at milk + honey

As usual, Thursday this week is filled with free events to party it up, but at least they’re all downtown!

Men’s Night at milk + honey, 5pm-8pm

Stop by SALON by milk + honey on Thursday from 5-8pm for an evening devoted to men. Complimentary chair massages, neck trims, and hair consultations. For the ladies, there will be complimentary makeup touch ups with Chad, the spa’s makeup artist. Beer + wine + snacks will be provided, and if you receive or schedule a hair cut that evening you’ll receive 15% off.

Holiday Window Lighting & Holiday Shopping Kickoff, 5-8pm

The rest of the 2nd Street District is buzzing too, with shopping specials, refreshments, and entertainment. Notables include Eliza Page hosting a holiday cocktail soiree to kick off the trunk show for Shaesby, and St. Bernard’s Sports celebrating its first anniversary by showing Teton Gravity Research’s movie Under the Influence at 7:30pm on an outdoor projector with food, drinks, giveaways, and raffle prizes.

Tribeza Issue Release Party, 6:30pm at BoConcept

Over on the other side of Second Street, Tribeza magazine launches its December issue with a local-celeb-studded croud including coverboy Taylor Kitsch of Friday Night Lights fame. I met him at a bar once and he was super sweet and easy to talk to. Most of the ten Golden people featured in the issue are supposed to be there, including local designer of Uchi and Belmont fame Michael Hsu, Texas Monthly legend Mike Levy, Women + Their Work director Chris Cowden (I wrote an article on her for Austin Woman magazine), and more. Also, I should mention that I really like BoConcept–their staff is SUPER friendly and their prices actually affordable!

A Mama Fu’s Surprise

I have to preface talking about my experience at Mama Fu’s last night by letting you in on my bias: the other day, my parents and I drove by a Mama Fu’s and my parents started talking about how they had just gone last week and loved it. I looked at them puzzled and said, “But you know it’s like a chinese fast food chain?” They jumped to Mama Fu’s defense and told me that, no, it was a sit-down place, and it was really fresh and delicious and they wanted to go back again.

Oh.

So when an invite to dinner arrived in my email box a few days later, of course I was intrigued. Then I learned that Murphy Adams Group, an Austin company, took over the entire chain in March, and they’re doing much better things with the restaurant. Murphy Adams President & CEO plus downtown & Lakeline franchise owner Randy Murphy was on hand when I went to dinner, and he happily talked about the restaurant and the changes his company has implemented. He said with a big smile, “We won’t say we’re authentic Asian food; we’re Americanized Asian food. But you’re definitely going to like what you get.”
Food at Mama Fu's

Right on, Mr. Murphy. We started with an order of spring rolls and an order of seared tuna. Both were excellent. I love spring rolls, but that doesn’t mean I’m just easy to please. These spring rolls were tasty and fresh with little peanut pieces in them. The peanut sauce was dark, not too creamy, and a little spicy. Mmmm. I liked the seared tuna; my companion thought it had too much pepper. But we devoured it, so it couldn’t have been TOO peppery. ;-)

For dinner, I ordered the steamer basket which more or less consisted of steamed brown rice and steamed veggies plus shrimp, which was exactly what I wanted. The menu said it came with Mama’s sauces, but our super sweet but obviously new waitress didn’t know what that meant. A chef eventually brought me out a cashew sauce and a pad thai sauce. The cashew sauce was excellent, maybe a smidge too sweet but I have a sweet tooth so I rolled with it, and the pad thai was tasty too. It was refreshing to be able to order a steamed dish and have it served to me literally steamed, rather than soaking in oil or butter or whatever else.

My companion ordered a Thai Basil noodle bowl with beef (sad cow! don’t think it’s free range). It was very spicy, which I liked from the bites I took, but at first it was a bit much for him. As he got deeper into the bowl, he found more flavor–or his taste buds exploded–so in the end he was happy.

I’d definitely go back and have that same meal over again! The Second Street location fills a little bit of a void in downtown eating, a price point between, say, Which Wic’s sandwich ($6) and Maiko’s bento box ($17). Maybe for lunch next week …

Happy Birthday Jo’s! + a veggie sandwich update

Yeah, yeah, yeah, it’s Halloween. I ended up dressing as Sarah Palin … so didn’t want to, but after four different and unrelated people suggested it, in the end I couldn’t resist. Especially since I owned everything needed except the fake glasses, so how much easier can you get?

Anyway, plenty of lists exist for things to do tonight. Downtown terrifies me but I have a feeling I’ll end up there after hitting a house party or two. Have fun, be safe, and during the day:

Happy Birthday to Jo’s!

Jo’s is turning 10 years old on October 31, and to celebrate they’re giving away all kinds of cool Jo’s schwag and offering 10% off everything all day long.

No word on if the 10% is being offered at Jo’s on Second too, where my to-die-for veggie sandwich lives. Seriously, even after another friend went and confirmed its awesomeness (“unbelievable!” was his comment), my brother also took the sammie for a spin and said, “Divine.”

Magazine Throwdown Thursday

Are you a Tribeza girl or Austin Monthly man? Because AM is hosting not one but TWO events this Thursday, while the ‘Bez is hosting just one event, and I’m not even sure the drinks are free this time around! Two of the events are just one block apart … oh the drama! Deets:

Tribeza Happy Hour at TASTE Select Wines

Taste Select Wines (downtown on Cesar Chavez) is a new eating/drinking concept in Austin. Part wine bar, part restaurant, part retail space, Taste is a sure way to satisfy your food and wine cravings. Join Tribeza for complimentary bites and great drink specials.
Time: 6-8pm

Austin Monthly at Second Street’s BoConcept

This one has the most sponsors, so I’d say it’ll be the biggest party if that’s what you’re into.

Last but not least, though least likely for me to attend:

Austin Monthly in the middle of nowhere at The Vineyard at Florence

I’m obviously way too lazy to type up all that info–besides, this way their graphic designer gets more mileage out of her work…

OMG the BEST veggie sandwich I’ve ever had

“I need your advice,” I say to the guy behind the counter at Jo’s on Second Street. “Veggie burger or veggie sandwich?”

Without a second’s hesitation, almost before I’ve finished talking, he says, “Veggie sandwich.”

Ok. Let me pause here and say that I don’t really like sandwiches. Most of them have too much bread and not enough filling. When I order a sandwich, I generally take off one of the pieces of bread to eat it. (And then if it’s good bread, I eat the un-sandwiched piece by itself, so clearly this isn’t for dieting reasons)

Back to Jo’s. I take the guy’s word, sub in whole wheat bread, and am good to go. I carry the sandwich around for an hour or so before I get a chance to eat it, but it’s a “cold” sandwich anyway (that they still pressed in the griller thing), so no worries. I sit down at my desk, unwrap the sandwich, and take a bite.

AMAZING!

This effing sandwich knocked my teeth off. It was so damn good I stuffed almost the entire half in my mouth at once before realizing that if I did that, I wouldn’t get to spend as much time with the sandwich. So I tried nibbles, though I was fairly ineffective at it, as I wanted more more more of this veggie sandwich.

The wheat bread had those little nubby berries in it and was toasty on the outside but squishy on the inside. It was slathered in bright green pesto sauce. Thinly-sliced grilled zucchini, yellow squash, and eggplant were piled high. And havarti cheese–havarti! I love you!–was smushed into the mix. I couldn’t even take the top off, the ratio of filling to bread was so perfect. The pesto + havarti + grilled veggies were perfect. The whole thing was perfect.

Sigh. I’m so full. Talking about it has brought it back and made me full again.

Jo’s on Second Street. You are my new friend. And thank you tall nameless counter guy, for recommending the veggie sandwich. You too are my new friend.

Tidbits or Tribeza? Tough Thursday!

I LOVE Austin Tidbits parties. They’re rare (quarterly?), obviously causing them to be more exciting than Tribeza parties, and they usually have fab gift bags and super-fashiony people, making them way more exciting.

Not that Tribeza parties don’t have fashiony people–and I will say they draw a fair man-crowd, whereas Tidbits men are randoms off the street and boyfriends–but their happy hours seem to be hit or miss. Maiko a few months ago with free sushi? Hit. Random apartment opening? Miss. This Thursday? Boutique. 50/50, leaning toward miss because it’s out in Westlake.

The Smackdown:

Austin Tidbits Fall Happy Hour

Locale: Downtown, Second Street at Eliza Page

Promises: “Dazzle,” gemstones, drinks, snacks

Time: 7–9pm

vs.

TRIBEZA Happy Hour

Locale: The Hip Chic (Village at Westlake, Bee Cave at 360)

Promises: exclusive peak into their new digs, models, DJ, food, cocktails

Time: 5:30-9pm

Let’s talk about the Second Street District

Formerly, I was not impressed with the Second Street District. My main beef was that it’s ridiculously hard to park. I get that it’s a mixed-use development and you’re supposed to walk, but say you don’t live there and you still want to shop there–give me just one free parking garage! Bridges on Lamar has a free parking garage for its retail.

My number two beef is that everything closes early. Some of the shops were closed at 6pm! But I think that’s gradually changing, and the restaurants are obviously open.

Also, the shops are all expensive. And they still are. But it seems like they’ve started finding a good mix of high- and lower-priced items, like $34 shoes next to $230 dresses. Plus there’s always Peyton’s Place, which is very reasonable. Today I LOVED Estilo. Obviously, you say, everyone knows Estilo is the place to go. But today there was just the friendliest sales girl, the cutest LBD, and sweet vintage belts from Moss Mills.

I also loved Shiki–friendly salesgirl again, but also some really cute dresses, especially a short green silk jumper-style dress. Hard to describe, but it was precious. I really missed out on the silk romper craze this summer season … but then again, where in the world do you wear a silk romper?! I might have to break my steadfast no-shorts-at-night rule for a silk romper.

I digress. So the new boutique Minx seems pretty cool, but every time I go there it is closed. This includes a random Saturday, today at noon, and tonight at 6pm. Also, they’re already having a sale. If a boutique just opened AND is never open, what can it possibly have to put on sale?! Um, maybe most of its inventory?

Point is, maybe like me you thought Second Street is an expensive place with boutiques with little selection. True. But remember that it’s Austin, and you can roll up shoe-less or whatever and the salespeople will still happily ask you to let them know if you need any help.

Anyway, go shop. Fuel our downtrodden economy…

UPDATE

MINX was open today! I went around 2pm, and the owner, Kate, was there and as sweet as she could be. They also had great summery silk dresses on sale for $120, beautiful bright yellow, shimmery purple, pretty, un-fussy flowers … good stuff. The prices were a good mix, though the cutest things were all expensive, of course. There was good jewelry too. Worth checking out, and hopefully they’ve worked out the kinks of opening hours!

Another Thursday, Another Plethora of Events

Good thing I have that fence to paint (it’s never done. You finish building the sucker and you just have to paint it) or I’d never be able to decide which of these events to go to! That and I’d go to the LAST Nike training run at SIX lounge before the big run this Sunday if I had time. Run 7pm at SIX.

+ Sabia (that spa I got a facial at and LOVED!) and KickPleat host a party:

Sabia + Kickpleat Party Invite

Sabia + Kickpleat Party Invite

+ Rae Cosmetics is hosting its Third Birthday party (although really, when isn’t Rae Cosmetics hosting or displaying at some party? Their lip gloss is great so I really can’t complain, but it’s true, they’re everywhere.

Three Beautiful Years

Come join the fun at the Rae Cosmetics Studio and Courtyard. You are invited to a fabulous evening of food, drinks and music. Enjoy a free makeover, a trip to the photo booth or a spin on the dance floor.

Proceeds benefit Girlstart. (www.girlstart.net)

Thursday – August 28th, at 7:00pm
The 26 Doors Shopping Center – 1206 W. 38th Street

+ Speaking of places that are always partying, its also Second Street district’s second birthday and they’re OBVIOUSLY throwing a bash.

For the second time in the past month, the district is celebrating its birtday with giveaways, sales, and snacks, plus an 8pm champagne toast on the Taverna patio with cupcakes from Delish, cookies from Tiff’s Treats, and gelato from Paciugo.

+ Along the same street, Design Within Reach is hosting a Wine and Design event:

From 6 to 8pm, try wine from Taste Select Wines (which is getting good reviews for coolness and being able to buy 1/2 glass of wine … who wants only half a glass of wine?!) and shop for dining room furniture, which is 15 percent off when you mix and/or match six or more chairs, stools, and tables. RSVP to austin@dwr.com. DWR, 200 W. Second St., 472-7200.

Emerald’s + Peyton’s Place

Boutiques in Austin are a dime a dozen nowdays, so sometimes I forget about the old standbys, like Emeralds. Long occupying primo 6th & Lamar real estate, the clothing and gift shop is a spot of some confusing identities–$25 tops next to $425 dresses–but nonetheless a great place to find something to wear.

The shoe selection is relatively cheap and top notch. I found some stellar purple heels that were a smidge too small, but I wanted to buy them anyway AND they were only $40. I didn’t end up getting them, but I’m jealous of anyone who they will fit and can buy them.

Up front they have some expensive dresses and mid-range jewelry, but head to the color-coded (nice!) racks and you’ll find relatively cheap tops, skirts, and even dresses for going out or a liberally-dress-coded office, like a creative industry. They also have quality basics from Michael Stars. I need to stop by more often to snag cute, relatively inexpensive going-out clothes!

I also stopped by Peyton’s Place for a quick perusal, and while I was disappointed in the quantity of clothing–and the price points have gone up a bit since they opened a year or so ago–I did buy a good basic cotton slip/dress, which is similar to what I bought the only other time I went: basic black flats. So it may be just me, but it seems like their basics are cheap and their not-basics, while cute, are not so cheap.

One thing Peyton’s Place has going for it is that I brought along a guy friend on this shopping excursion, and the cute salesgirl asked him if he wanted a cupcake. He said no (how can he resist?!) but asked her for a beer, and she said, “Oh, I think we have some left over from a party we threw,” and returned to ask if he’d prefer Tecate, Dos XX, or Corona? He was thrilled (and chose Tecate).
