Home Slice Carnival-O-Pizza

I may not personally be a huge fan of Home Slice, but there’s no denying its spot in Austin’s iconic culture. Hell, there’s even a Year of Pizza blog from a dude who won one of these free food for a year! contests and will not shut up about how much he loves Home Slice. Anyway, fan or no, Home Slice’s Carnival-O-Pizza is always a great time because of its crazy atmosphere and fun contests.

December 5, noon to 7pm

All proceeds from the carnival will directly benefit Austin Pets Alive!, http://www.austinpetsalive.org

Where else has:

Extreme Pizza Eating Contest

Open to anyone ready to stuff themselves triumphant, contestants in the EXTREME pizza eating contest will be judged by how much pizza they can eat in 30 minutes.

Pizza Tossing Contest

In true New York pizzeria style, the pizza tossing contest will showcase the best tossing talent and artistry from pizzerias in Austin and beyond. We’re excited to welcome Scott Weiner from New York City Pizza Tours as our celebrity judge!

Pizza Box Folding Contest

Not an expert pizza tosser but think you’re good with your hands? Enter the pizza box folding contest and prove your agility to a crowd of onlookers.

Hands on an Eggplant Sub

Test your mental and physical stamina; the person who keeps their hand on an eggplant sub the longest receives free Home Slice pizza for a year. This popular contest once went on for 27 hours and then ended in a tie that had to be broken by a game of Home Slice trivia. Another pair of competitors met over the sub and ended up getting married; the proposal included “Will You Marry Me” in pepperoni on a Home Slice pizza. Last year’s winner, Seth, is the aforementioned dude who blogged his year of free pizza.

Music and entertainment:

Austin Break Dancers, a troupe of talented New York-style break dancers

Little Stolen Moments, a unique Austin dance troupe

Big Don, a hip-hop artist known for his original kid-inspired raps

DJ Ariel, part of the rap duo The Reflex

Jerm Pollet, part of The Sinus Show at Alamo Drafthouse, will keep you updated of the day’s events as the Carnival’s emcee.

Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) is the beneficiary of the proceeds from this year’s carnival. APA! strives to promote and provide the resources, education and programs needed to eliminate the killing of companion animals in Austin. APA! holds adoption events at locations throughout the city, including across the street from Home Slice on South Congress. APA! volunteers will man the carnival booths and dogs available for adoption will be at the carnival.

To sign up for the contests or learn more about the Carnival-O-Pizza, stop by for a slice at Home Slice Pizza or check the web site at www.homeslicepizza.com.

Halloween Haunts: Where to Get Your Spook On

I’ve been remiss in not posting Halloween to-dos sooner, but Halloween, like other big holidays, just wears me out sometimes. I LOVE LOVE LOVE costumes, but I like themes. I like to get creative on a theme, not just have the whole wide world as possibilities–it’s just too much. Anyway, here are some Halloween haunts for you fools:

House of Torment: Rise of the Abominations / Illusion Manor: Where reality ends and Nightmares Begin

Permanent Facility in the Northeast corner of Highland Mall
TIX: $14.99, $19.99 for Combo Pass w/Illusion Manor PLUS tickets are sold in 30-minute “Showtimes” so no long lines!

Rise of the Abominations is a multi-layered, psychological thrill most comparable to a trip through a modern horror movie or ultra-vivid video game—complete with detailed two-story sets, towering animatronic monsters, iconic characters, and chilling scenarios. Step into the post-apocalyptic world of nightmarish overlord Mr. Creep as an epic struggle for survival unfolds in a vivid wasteland where civilization has collapsed and fallen prey to biological warfare, social anarchy, and widespread bedlam. With no law or prevalent power to preside, the country has degenerated into ongoing conflict between the fear-mongering Sgt. Graves and a stealth Tactical Ops Unit as well as legions of mutant inhabitants, known as The Infected, The Contagium, and the growing contingent of The Abomination uprising.

Guests who cannot make it through are photographed for the “Wall of Shame.”

“Blood Ritual” Brings the Fiends Back to Richard Garriott’s Estate

Richard Garriott’s legendary estate, Britannia Manor, was known from 1988 to 1994 as the most elaborate haunted house in the country and until this year the venue has remained dormant. Breast Cancer Resource Centers (BCRC) of Texas and SCARE for a CURE will bring this iconic place back to life with a haunted house to benefit breast cancer.

Featured in Garriott’s own scaled replica of an Elizabethan outdoor theater nestled along the banks of Lake Austin, the Curtain Theatre will host a reunion of some of Shakespeare’s most famous characters as Austin Shakespeare presents Spooky Shakespeare. Scenes from the master storyteller’s scariest and most enchanting moments include the Ghost of Hamlet’s father, the Witches of Macbeth, Puck and Oberon from A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Prospero and Ariel from The Tempest.

Haunted House: Wednesday, October 28 – Saturday, October 31, 7:30pm

www.bcrc.org and www.scareforacure.org

TIX: General Admission $20; Red Level experience $25, http://www.scareforacure.org/tickets/index.php

All net proceeds benefit the BCRC

Spooky Shakespeare: Thursday, October 29 – Saturday, October 31, 8 pm

http://austinshakespeare.org/drupal/?q=node/285

TIX: $15 seated; $10 groundlings (standing).

Both: Richard Garriott’s estate on the shores of Lake Austin, 7400 Coldwater Canyon Dr.

Biggest Beer Weekend of the Year

With a beer festival at Flying Saucer, Oktoberfests at Waterloo Park, Ginger Man, and NXNW, and a birthday party at Independence Brewing, this weekend is a beer-lover’s bonanza.

The first-ever Oktoberfest Austin hasn’t gotten a lot of buzz, but it features music, a microbrew beer garden, tasty foods, a college football watch party, kids and an arts & craft market. Music by Austin favorites: Nakia and his Southern Cousins, Brave Combo, Guy Forsyth, Li’l Cap’n Travis, Dustin Welch, and La Tampiquena … FREE admission with two cans of food. $2 entry fee without food donation. Event benefits the Capital Area Food Bank. Chairs and blankets welcome, no coolers please. E-mail oktoberfestaustin@gmail.com for more info, noon-10pm at Waterloo Park.

UT v Missouri

It always has to be listed. UT is away, but catch the game anywhere and you’ll have fun. Aussie’s Volleybar will have the game on and bikini-clad vball players, and is celebrating its 20th anniversary with food & drink specials like $1 margaritas (make mind a double for $2) and $2 Miller Lite pints.

Colonel Mustard’s Birthday!

OK, so not actually Colonel of Clue, but my dear friend Ry Ry Musty el Mustardo has had a big week: not only did he close on his first home (!!!) but he’s turning the big … well … 2-8? Not really sure. Irrelevant. Relevance is that it’s his birthday! Watch out, West Sixth, we’re coming for some jaeger jaeger jaeger bombs … love you Ry!

I love Saturdays: CrossFit before Cupcakes, with a side of (512) Beer

Saturdays in Austin are sometimes lazy recovery days, and sometimes jam-packed adventure days. OK, who am I kidding, they’re always adventurous, sometimes I just choose to laze about instead of partaking. But this Saturday I won’t be missing out on any of these awesome events:

9-11:30am: The Movement @ RunTex on Lake Austin Blvd

The Movement is a CrossFit block party celebration post-workout … free UTB (and bring the kiddos, there’ll be a free CrossFit Kids workout too!) from 8-9am, then partay with breakfast tacos from Taco Deli and CrossFit stuff like:

- The NEW Movement Video (Movement from CrossFit Central on Vimeo)
- Fight Gone Bad Demonstration
- Unveiling of the CrossFit Women’s Challenge
- New program information including CrossFit Endurance & CrossFit Kids
- Giveaways & Discounts

Head home for a shower before splitting your time between Beer and Cupcakes… if only everyone’s lives included decisions so difficult.

2-5pm: 1st Anniversary Celebration at (512) Brewery

The beer will be flowing at the baby brewery, which boasts such amazing beers as the (512) Pecan Porter. I cannot wait to taste the 1st Anniversary Ale, (512) ONE, a Belgian-Style Strong Ale with organic base grains, Forbidden Fruit yeast, domestic hops and local Good Flow wildflower honey. Mmmmm. (Homer?)
(512) Brewing, 407 Radam, F200, 78745 (Between South 1st & South Congress, one block south of Ben White)

4-7pm: Cupcake Smackdown at One-2-One Bar

Cupcake Smackdown

Austin’s first Cupcake Smackdown includes a blind tasting contest of all the store front bakeries, an amateur baking contest, a cupcake silent auction, the people’s popular vote, and a cupcake eating contest for both dogs and humans! Live music will be performed by Arielle Nicole.

For the blind tasting, a panel of local chefs and foodies will be chowing down on vanilla, chocolate, and a baker’s choice cupcake from each of the eight store front shops. Each cupcake will be judged on the flavor, texture, and aroma.

Other activities include a bake off in which amateur bakers can enter either the vanilla, chocolate, or freestyle cupcake competition. There will be two categories for the cupcake eating contest: one for human participants and one for canine participants. Canines will be eating pupcakes for speed (not quantity). Ginger carrot pupcakes provided by Grand Dog Bakery. Spectators will also be invited to vote for the People’s Choice award for any of the store front bakeries, vote for the cutest cupcake at the Smackdown, and also participate in a cupcake silent auction. Proceeds to go to Wine and Food Foundation of Texas.

The event is kid and dog friendly. Pre-entries for the cupcake eating contest are being accepted and will be accepted until the day of the event pending space. Each entry for the eating contests costs $10. Entry forms for the eating contests are available at All-In-One Bakeshop on 183. Please bring water and a spray bottle to keep your dog cool. It will be hot. Admission to the event is free. Please tip your bartender.

Email Jennie@misohungrynow.com to participate, enter yourself or your dog, enter your cupcakes, or to sponsor the event.

This weekend: CrossFit + Cookies + Maker’s Mark Traveling Brunch

Saturday itinerary:

8:30am: CrossFit UTB workout (Meet under Mopac Bridge. Work out. Be awesome)

10am: Spectate Men’s BB Doubles at Aussie’s (damn it’s gonna be hot)

1-3pm: Snag free Alexandra’s Cookie Dreams Cookies and a delicious No Sugar Added Mocha Blended at The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf.

2pm: Hit up BookPeople on N. Lamar for a book-signing by the one and only Lauren Conrad, author of LA Candy. From what we’ve heard, it’s a thinly, thinly veiled account of what life was really like on The Hills. You know, the “reality” behind the “reality” show. (I really, honestly wish I could go. I’ve heard LC is much pretty in real life, and she’s pretty on TV, but alas:)

2pm-victory: Austin Sports & Social Club 3×3 Basketball Tournament

Post-victory: Crash, exhausted, onto couch. Or hit up Uncorked Anniversary Party from 5-close.

Sunday:

Start over again with a Maker’s Mark Traveling Brunch. Who knew this magically delicious thing existed? And Nomad Bar? What’s that? Just when you think you know every

thing about this town … wait, who am I kidding?! No one could ever know everything about this town!

11am:
Makers Mark Brunch

4-8pm: Trunk Show I blogged about here.

Make sure to squeeze in:

C3 Outfitters is that group bringing “brand-name” clothes to Austin for $10 each and 2 for $15 this weekend…
I still haven’t been to Crockett Center at 10601 N. Lamar Blvd to check it out, but I’d like to. Curious. Hours are 4-7pm Friday, opens 10am on Saturday & noon on Sunday.

Uncorked One-Year Anniversary: Big Wine Party

Uncorked Invite

Flyer says it all. Free wine and food. Delicious food. Delicious wine. From the cute little house atop the hill just on the other side of 35 on 7th Street. Do it.

When else do you get offered free booze on a Saturday night from 5pm-close??

So much free CrossFit!

Many of you have written in asking for info on the next free CrossFit workouts, so behold–three of ‘em this weekend:

UTB (Under the Bridge): Free Community Workout

Saturday, May 30th 8:30am – 9:30am @ Town Lake, under the bridge, on the Hike & Bike Trail
This workout is similar to a CrossFit Central boot camp. Expect body weight resistance exercises, med ball work, and other explosive interval training.

Throwdown in the Park Free Community Workout

Saturday, May 30th 9:45am @ Auditorium Shores

This Saturday Westlake Crossfit, Crossfit Texas and Crossfit Austin will host a free community workout. This fun and exciting workout is designed for all fitness levels , so be sure and bring family and friends

Women-Only Kettlebell Workout

Sunday, May 31st 10am @ lululemon (or the parking lot behind lululemon athletica)

Ladies, come and get fit with Carey Kepler of Crossfit Central in her Kettlebell class. The Kettlebell is a traditional Russian cast iron weight looking somewhat like a cannonball with a handle. Kettlebell workouts are intended to increase strength, endurance, agility and balance, challenging both the muscular and cardiovascular system with dynamic, total-body movements. Let this lululemon Ambassador rock your Sunday!

Crazy Fun Idea! I think this Saturday calls for a special sort of double-under: a double-under-the-bridge workout for anyone crazy enough to do Central’s workout from 8:30-9:30 under the Mopac bridge, then run to Westlake/Texas/Austin’s workout near the S. First bridge from 9:45-10:45, then back to the cars at the Mopac bridge. Let’s do it! (Oh, and then I’ll play a football game.)

The Memorial Day Post

I’m throwing a bachelorette party this weekend, so I’ve all but written off Memorial Day, which means that in purely selfish interest, I’ve yet to post on the beloved summer kickoff (some call it a holiday to honor our fallen heroes …. psssh). Last year I went big, with a Memorial Day Party barge through Austin SSC AND a river float that landed me dehydrated and on the couch with my mom bringing me chicken noodle soup (recap here).

Should you want to enjoy a similarly ill-advised weekend, the Austin SSC party barge is already sold out, but here’s a Rotundo Entertainment Group party barge for $40. You can always head south to the river to float–yes, it’s bumper-to-bumper toobs, but everyone is prepared for the madness, so it’s actually much more fun and less headache than I imagined it would be.

Should you choose to stay on dry land, United Way of Central Texas is throwing a mega fundraiser called Give 5, where people are encourage to donate just $5 AND tons of local business are donating 5% of their sales ALL WEEKEND to United Way. Many are also offering discounts, free gifts, and cocktails when you mention the Give 5 program. For a list or to donate $5, click here.

If you’re out on the town Saturday night, look for an awesome bachelorette party … I can’t tell you what we’ll be doing or wearing, but I promise, you’ll know it’s us if you see us…

Drink for [a] Cause(s)

It seems like there are opportunities to support local charities in just about everything you do. While I don’t normally highlight events until a day or two before, I’ve got to get this on your calendar because it’s a cause near and dear to me (that, and I’m the Brunette QB, and we need to win the game and the fundraising challenge):

Brunette Happy Hour!

My fave bar, Lanai, is opening early just for us to run around in our uniforms passing out your drinks and collecting your tips for the Alzheimer’s Association. We’re gonna have some sweet drink specials, sweet treats, sick DJ beats–hey-o Johnny Bravvo!–and lots of fun. 6-8pm, Saturday May 9th at Lanai.

WHILE you’re drinking for the cause, here’s another example of boozin’ for local charities:

From May 4-8, Rio Grande Mexcian Restaurant on San Jacinto is giving 10% of bar sales (that’s a lot of money) to five selected charities, one each night. The sched:

Monday, May 4: A Legacy of Giving, 5-7:30pm
Tuesday, May 5: Austin Sunshine Camps, 5-7:30pm
Wednesday, May 6: Lance Armstrong Foundation, 5-7:30pm
Thursday, May 7: The Austin Theatre Alliance, 5-7:30pm
Friday, May 8: Red Cross of Central Texas, 5-7:30pm

Now’s the time to get your margarita on, people, and then keep the fun going through the weekend with a “Brunettes Do it Better” drink at BvB Happy Hour!
