Your Lucky Day: SXSW

http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=p2_e5Pa9NwdSkKQEQs3v1MA

This, my friends, is all you need for SXSW. It is a spreadsheet of the best parties.

The criteria:

-Free

-Free booze / food / cool stuff

There are a million and a half lists out there with free parties. Most focus on music. This is not what I care about. I care about swag. And good times. Music involved is great, and helps make good times, but music alone does not a good time make.

I am an expert in free parties. I partied for 65 1/2 hours last year. That’s NOT including sleeping or time in transit. That’s 65 1/2 hours of on-the-streets, party-hoppin’, free-stuff-carryin’, raw SXSW action. Trust me when I tell you that the parties on my spreadsheet will be the best, the most fun, and reward you with the most branded junk you might not need. But you want it.

It will be constantly updated on the new tab you see on the top navigation bar. Check back for more goodies.

The top three–so far–are highlighted in green: Rachael Ray (the food), Facebook (the people), and Standard Recording/Craftster (the crafts).

PARTY ON! SXSW 2009!

Special thanks to @lodea for her research and updates!

Typical Thursday: Men’s Night at milk + honey

As usual, Thursday this week is filled with free events to party it up, but at least they’re all downtown!

Men’s Night at milk + honey, 5pm-8pm

Stop by SALON by milk + honey on Thursday from 5-8pm for an evening devoted to men. Complimentary chair massages, neck trims, and hair consultations. For the ladies, there will be complimentary makeup touch ups with Chad, the spa’s makeup artist. Beer + wine + snacks will be provided, and if you receive or schedule a hair cut that evening you’ll receive 15% off.

Holiday Window Lighting & Holiday Shopping Kickoff, 5-8pm

The rest of the 2nd Street District is buzzing too, with shopping specials, refreshments, and entertainment. Notables include Eliza Page hosting a holiday cocktail soiree to kick off the trunk show for Shaesby, and St. Bernard’s Sports celebrating its first anniversary by showing Teton Gravity Research’s movie Under the Influence at 7:30pm on an outdoor projector with food, drinks, giveaways, and raffle prizes.

Tribeza Issue Release Party, 6:30pm at BoConcept

Over on the other side of Second Street, Tribeza magazine launches its December issue with a local-celeb-studded croud including coverboy Taylor Kitsch of Friday Night Lights fame. I met him at a bar once and he was super sweet and easy to talk to. Most of the ten Golden people featured in the issue are supposed to be there, including local designer of Uchi and Belmont fame Michael Hsu, Texas Monthly legend Mike Levy, Women + Their Work director Chris Cowden (I wrote an article on her for Austin Woman magazine), and more. Also, I should mention that I really like BoConcept–their staff is SUPER friendly and their prices actually affordable!

I quote: “Free drinks and art viewing”

So said a friend of mine. About one of these events, but I can’t remember which. He had no idea Wednesday is the new Thursday this week and it is jam-packed with events.

Wednesday Post-Work Agenda:

1) SHOP

Join Austin designer Linda Asaf as she hosts her 4th Annual Austin Designer Sample Sale. Head to her West 6th Street (1405 W. 6th Street) studio space from 3 – 8pm. Enjoy designer samples at 25% – 75% off from Linda herself, Myka Cosmetics, Tracy Tenpenny, Jesica Ciarla, Sikara Jewelry, David Hall Hodges [LOVE his leather stuff!! I wrote an article about him once, his stuff is badass], Mint Owl, Betty Lash, Shimmer & Bliss, Moxie & the Compound, and Catherine Nicole.

Sip some wine and enjoy Cupprimo Cupcakes. RSVP here.

2) MUSIC + BOOZE

7 – 10pm at super-cool new downtown spot RED RIVER FLATS on Red River between 9th and 10th, across from the Mohawk and Club de Ville. Casey McPherson from Alpha Rev is doing a solo, acoustic show, and free booze and food from Primizie, Kenichi, Tito’s, Miller, Sweet Leaf, Maine Root, etc. will abound. There will also be an art show, Photo Booth, and it all benefits the Austin Music Foundation. (Um, question? If this is all free, what exactly benefits the AMF?)

RSVP here.
3) FIND NEW FRIENDS?

Second on Sixth is StrataTX‘s annual Anniversary Party. The networking/social group for creatives in the arts, culture, and economy (that’s what the “about” says on the website …) uses this event to drive membership for the upcoming year. Hosted at Este (2235 East 6th Street), this event features free food and drinks and is great for networking, meeting new folks, and seeing a variety of different forms of art, including:

- John Pointer in the Members-Only Lounge
- Bboy City Dancers with DJ Lo-Res
- Video art curated by Austin Museum of Digital Art
- Artwork from Young Master Katie Pipkin
- Improv Troupe Paralellogramophonograph
- Live graffiti art from Slok

RSVP here.

Pearl Jam’s 2004 Vote for Change Tour Documentary to Austin

Jo’s Coffee is one of just 50 viewing parties in the nation for the new Pearl Jam documentary chronicling their 2004 Vote for Change Tour. In honor of Tuesday’s election, they’re showing this unreleased film that shows behind the scenes footage of Pearl Jam trying to make a difference.

Monday, November 3 at 7pm, free entrance, serving beer (thanks to Independence Brewery), coffee and some sandwiches.

YouTube clip

From the filmmakers:
We got home and cut the film, but never showed it to anyone. The enthusiasm for the project dwindled due to the outcome of the election. Ironically, we feel like Bush’s reelection may have made the film even more important/ valid and we think now is a great time to dig it out and remind people why it is so important to vote. We love this film, it’s like nothing we have ever done before and we are stoked to finally have the chance to show it.

*My posting of this has nothing to do with my personal politics, which will stay out of the blog. This is a cool, exclusive event extraordinarily tied to pop culture, so that’s why I post it.

Tidbits or Tribeza? Tough Thursday!

I LOVE Austin Tidbits parties. They’re rare (quarterly?), obviously causing them to be more exciting than Tribeza parties, and they usually have fab gift bags and super-fashiony people, making them way more exciting.

Not that Tribeza parties don’t have fashiony people–and I will say they draw a fair man-crowd, whereas Tidbits men are randoms off the street and boyfriends–but their happy hours seem to be hit or miss. Maiko a few months ago with free sushi? Hit. Random apartment opening? Miss. This Thursday? Boutique. 50/50, leaning toward miss because it’s out in Westlake.

The Smackdown:

Austin Tidbits Fall Happy Hour

Locale: Downtown, Second Street at Eliza Page

Promises: “Dazzle,” gemstones, drinks, snacks

Time: 7–9pm

vs.

TRIBEZA Happy Hour

Locale: The Hip Chic (Village at Westlake, Bee Cave at 360)

Promises: exclusive peak into their new digs, models, DJ, food, cocktails

Time: 5:30-9pm

Glossy 8 Party

The Statesman’s style writers are all abuzz about the Glossy 8 party tonight. I’m hoping that means plans are huge and it should be awesome! It’s the first time since I’ve been tracking down Austin events (about 2 years now) that I’ve heard about the Statesman throwing a party, so maybe that’s the buzz.

Whatever it is, $85 tickets (benefiting Season of Caring) are still available to the party–which includes the fashion show, music, food, and drinks. Attire? From cocktail to funky … which is no help to the average Austinite trying to figure out what to wear! I’m considering wearing a sequined minidress (cocktail) with flats (funky), but can’t decide if I want to waste the sequined minidress’ debut on an event for which I may or may not be overdressed. Opinions?

Alright, alright, more ACL coverage

Just because I like free parties and magazine parties, I’m posting on ACL again. Letting you guys in on some secrets:

The Paste magazine party tonight at Stubb’s should be ridiculous. I tried to sneak into Paste’s party during SXSW, to no avail. But RSVP here and you won’t have to, plus you’ll see What Made Milwaukee Famous (a buzz band this year), Bobby Bare Jr., White Ghost Shivers, and more.

Friday night, the official ACL afterparty is hosted by Antics and features tons of free drinks plus DJ CSS and special guests … you can probably expect good “special guests” from this one–it is ACL, after all. RSVP and go early–this one is bound to have a long line.

No hope for the Rolling Stone party … already RSVPed out. :-( If you’ve got any more RSVP sites, post ‘em and let us all know where the cool kids are!

Red River Beach Party

This is the most ridiculous/awesome/Austin-y thing I’ve heard of in awhile. Only in Austin would two clubs get together, rent slip-n-slides, inflatable pools, and moonwalks to create a beach party, in late September, on Red River, the street. Loooooove it, love Austin. And there are good bands playing too, for a mere $5! Here for tix.

Recaps! + What’s up on Tuesday

Be sure to check out the marketing agency blog I’m writing for this week! http://dn3sxsw.wordpress.com/

Last night was lots of fun. We got to see the premiere of Forgetting Sarah Marshall, after waiting in line for only an hour, sitting in the far righthand balcony of the Paramount. It was cute. My friend loved it, I thought it was okay. We were very excited later to see one of the stars at the facebook party at Pangaea (which was lots of fun), and he was super friendly and took a picture with us. Pretty cute, and it made me like the movie more because he was so nice.

The parties we hit up last night were definitely more fun than Sunday night’s, and we met more cool people. We ran around with some Canadians for a little while before meeting up with some fellas from Michigan–who we’re having dinner with tonight! Wha?!?! My friend set it up, and who am I to get in the way of her fun? We also got into a few parties that were badge-only, which was cool, but we suffered a small ego bruising when we were denied entrance to a party that some woman on the street from that very party told us we should go into. Jerks!

Tonight there aren’t very many parties, so we only have two events on the agenda: the Art Disaster 5 party at Beauty Bar (all day) and possibly the Howdy Texas party at Stubb’s … unfortunately (for us), Stubb’s is also hosting the Music Festival Opening Night party tonight, so we might not be able to get in even with our RSVP. Air Raid Launch at Red 7 is another possibility.

Of course, there’s always the PureVolume Ranch–every night–and other parties to try and weasel our way into, so I’m not worried. It is going to be a bummer when my friend and I aren’t the only girls running around though. During the interactive (nerd) festival, we’ve had some pretty sweet odds.

Monday’s Agenda

A rundown of my SXSW affairs… luckily, a good friend is a teacher and has Spring Break this week, so I have a constant partner in crime. Unlike Wednesday on, today will mostly feature night parties. My first priority is getting into the Forgetting Sarah Marshall premiere, because it’s just downright ironic how much the movie’s premise mirror’s said friend’s life and my own–but in opposite ways. Unfortunately, we don’t have Badges, so we’ll have to wait in line and hope there are seats left. We’re getting there an hour early, and it’s raining. Ugh.

After that, or if it fails, we’ll be hitting up the PhizzPop party at Maggie Mae’s, and then we’re going to try to weasel our way into the Adobe Sneak Peek Party, 8pm11pm at the Dirty Dog, where we can “Get an inside look at how Adobe is powering the future of entertainment at the Sneak Peek Party of Adobe Media Player. Join the excitement of the event with FREE gifts, FREE food, FREE drinks, skateboarding tricks, celebrity appearances, and a surprise musical act you won’t want to miss!”

Another possibility is the Next New Networks Presents “Hey! Ho! Let’s Go!” from 8pmmidnight at Cedar Street, where we can see/play in “All-Star Rock Band Showdown starts at 10pm, live music follows by The Vettes and Brenn. Come watch some of your favorite SXSW all-stars play Rock Band at the Cedar Street Courtyard. Get there early with a team to enter yourself in the showdown. Then SXSW showcase bands The Vettes and Brenn take the stage to close out the night!” Rock Band has officially become 2008′s Guitar Hero.

There’s also a Rock Bands Rock Opera at Stubb’s, that might be a long-walk-last-resort. Looks like Monday is the the night of the Rock Band. Does that mean I should dress like a rocker?
