Guest Post: TRIO Happy Hour

Downtown Austin’s Trendy New Happy Hour
Review by William Jackson & Sandra Rascon

If you haven’t experienced a Happy Hour at TRIO at Four Seasons, you haven’t truly experienced Happy Hour in downtown Austin.

Austin’s newest place to be “scene” is nestled in the welcoming arms of the Four Seasons, located on the green banks of Lady Bird Lake, smack dab in the middle of the business and world-famous entertainment districts.  When you descend the grand staircase and round the corner, you can feel the excitement as you prepare to embark on what is sure to be a memorable journey of culinary and visual delights and lively conversations.  Is there a bad seat in the house?  We think not.  There’s the inviting outdoor patio overlooking the serene Lake, the spacious main dining room where views of nature peak through the stately windows, or the hip Wine Bar reminiscent of a trendy bar in Miami Beach — TRIO is the perfect setting to network, host a successful business event, or simply decompress.

Prepare to experience TRIO’s charming service, which seems like a perfectly executed theatrical production: attendants swirling in and stealing away almost invisibly, set into motion by nothing more than the subtle movement of your eyes, or the menu, signaling it’s time to let the show begin.  The management is as comfortable as family and has a knack for ensuring the enjoyment of each guest without compromising individuality. Be prepared for a brief, delightful, and engaging conversation that is never intrusive.

Prepare to experience food impressive in its precision.  Wonderful delicacies booming with flavor.  Chef de Cuisine Todd Duplechan has filled the menu with a tantalizing selection sure to delight even the most discriminating palate.  Not to mention menu items can be enjoyed at half-price, an enticing invitation to taste every selection at least once.

Unforgettable are the Mussels drenched in a rich broth of Roquefort, Prosciutto and Riesling – you will ask for a spoon or bread.  Even Truffle Fries rise to the occasion with Rosemary, Garlic and Meyer Lemon Aioli.  Certainly, the little-known three-day marinating process involving sugar is key to this simple yet amazing gourmet delight!  Lamb Sliders are not far behind, these tantalizing mini gourmet burgers are made with local lamb, tzatziki and cumin.

If you have the pleasure of meeting Chef Todd, inquire about the Pecan-Fed Pig, a spicy dish he introduced to us that is not on the Happy Hour menu but SHOULD BE!

If you prefer a cocktail, you won’t get any dirty looks or get your hand slapped, the accommodating bar staff is more than thrilled to make your request.  But, be advised, TRIO is known for its impressive wine selection with over 300 unique selections with 60 served by the glass.  Especially delightful are the Happy Hour selections, which are specifically selected to complement the food.  No surprise here, as the wine is personally selected by award-winning Sommelier, Mark Sayre who received the title of Austin’s Best Sommelier for 2007 from The Wine & Food Foundation of Texas and The Texas Sommelier Association. Mark says, “Baked Gulf Oysters and a glass or two of the Riesling, Schloss Vollrads, Germany, 2007–there’s nothing better.”

If Red is your choice, the secret is out about Cabernet Amavi Cellars, a Washington 2006!  It stands alone as a medium bold that leaves the palate refreshed.  Truly, it is one of the few red wines that can be enjoyed without an edible complement and is a discovery worth making.  If champagne is desired, enjoy a glass of Louis Roederer – well known in France for gracing weddings and special occasions.

The hallmark wine experience at TRIO is that your glass is always filled from a bottle at your table, in front of you.  You’ll feel as if you’re at an exclusive wine tasting event as even the table settings are smartly designed and arranged to mimic those set at an actual wine tasting.

With four star service, elegant cuisine, expansive drink selections, trendy guests, local pundits and complimentary valet for all TRIO Happy Hour clientele, this upscale Wine Bar is everything it should be — allowing you to enjoy life as it’s meant to be.  You can’t help but become a regular.

After all, aren’t you supposed to be Happy and much more enlightened, when you leave Happy Hour?

Happy Hour at TRIO is Monday through Saturday, 5pm to 8pm, 98 San Jacinto Boulevard, Austin, 78701. For additional information, call (512) 685-8300.

lululemon offers Free Fitness

Weird Wednesdays are back at lululemon, starting this afternoon with Brooke’s Bootcamp on top of Whole Foods from 6:30-7:30pm. Don’t know what Brooke’s Bootcamp entails, but sounds fun, and who wouldn’t want to hit the WF salad bar afterward?

Today also marks the first day you can shop lululemon online, so all you online-shopping-addicts (erm, uh, NOT ME) can get the fingers working on some workout gear. http://lululemon.com/shop/index.php … um, THANK GOD THIS IS AN APRIL FOOL’S JOKE. The 9-year-old KidPix design is a total throwback to the mid-nineties when everyone thought they could “design” a website. But does this mean that online shopping is also an April Fool’s joke? That does not make me happy.

As usual, the yoga-wear store on 6th & Lamar offers free Saturday yoga from 8:30-9:30am, this month Leigh of Love Yoga Co-op teaches.

Sunday is the first day for the new lululemon run group for ALL-level runners. Be at the store @ 9am for the inaugural run!

Saturday is all about Craftin’ … unless you’re camping!

Austin Handmade Market

I first discovered etsy when I bought an “unfinished diamond” ring on a leather strap with a piece of metal. It looked awesome in the pictures, but when it arrived I was sad to be able to see the glue on my diamond, and I assumed that meant it was bad and would fall off. Two years later, it still exists, has not fallen off, and I still think of it as a bastion of my coolness. I’ve never gotten a compliment on it though …

I digress. Point is, etsy is an online portal for cool handmade stuff and they’re bringing it offline to South First. So go.

Then, Saturday night head to:

MAKE Out Sessions

… I will be camping at Inks Lake! Wish me warmth, hiking, campfires, and good times! And luck in Polish Horseshoes

El Greco < Raw Food Bar at Whole Foods

I’d been wanting to try El Greco for awhile, ever since my mom met the head chef and told me how nice he was and that I needed to go try his restaurant. It’s on 31st & Guadalupe, behind the Mangia–which is a disadvantage for me, because I’d rather eat the delicious Mangia pizza I know and love than strange food I haven’t yet identified with–but on a cold Saturday I bypassed my standby and popped into El Greco for lunch.

I like Greek food, especially the seasonings on the meat, but as I now only eat free-range, I am limited to the vegetarian or vegan options–vegan?! That’s rare! I was initially impressed by the number of vegetarian options, including a delicious-sounding casserole of sorts. Unfortauntely, at $15, it hardly seemed like a prudent lunch choice. Instead I went for the vegan plate, which ended up being $13 anyway. I had severalchoices, but I ended up with some of the veggie casserole, a salad, and tabouleh. I wanted the hummus but was trying to avoid white bread and they don’t have whole wheat pitas, so I went all veg.

Of course, my dish arrived with pitas anyway. Jerks! ;-)

The woman who brought out the food was very attentive, wanted to know how everything was, and generally just eager to please, which is nice. The food, while good, was not great. My veggie casserole was a bit greasy, which was disappointing. A friend’s gyro was good but she didn’t rave about it. Another’s stuffed peppers were also good, but not rave worthy. Which might be fine, if our dishes were $2 or $3 cheaper. But when you’re paying a premium for lunch, you expect greatness. And I’m sad to report that El Greco disappointed.

Which isn’t to say that you shouldn’t go there. It fits a nice niche of “nice” food that’s quick and easy, a nice place to dine without having to dress up but being better than fast food. If that’s what you’re looking for, by all means, check out El Greco. The staff is sweet and the food good enough.

But I’m pretty sure I’ll be taking my $13 to the raw foods bar at Whole Foods–I just discovered that they serve entrees! They have a delicious Pad Thai served over zuchinni noodles, and you can stick to the raw or they’ll sautee your veggies for just a little warmth over the raw noodles. Amazing!! I want to go back and try the other dishes as well…

Weekend Workout – Free CrossFit

You know how much I love me some free Crossfit, and while the boys at my fave CrossFit Austin have a sweet free Valentine’s Day workout planned (more on that later), I’ve got to tell you about CrossFit Central’s Under-The-Bridge workout. It’s way too early on Saturday morning, from 8:30-9:30am, but it’s an awesome introduction to CrossFit-style workouts in a boot camp format. It’s a good place to learn some moves, because anything you can do out there under the bridge at Town Lake you can do on your own without any equipment. We’ll see if I drag myself out of bed for this one …
