Mighty Fine is taking over Austin!

Shortly after expanding south, Mighty Fine Burgers is stretching up northward too, for its third location. Mighty Fine Burgers, Fries & Shakes opens its third location at the University Oaks Shopping Center (next to IKEA) today.

The company behind the concept – K&N Management -is sure that Mighty Fine will be a big hit with burger lovers and quality-conscious diners alike. The same company runs the four Austin locations of Rudy’s Country Store & Bar-B-Q, where they take quality and service seriously. You won’t find a drive-thru, but a welcoming dining room where you share picnic tables with blue and white checkered tablecloths with other diners.

The hamburgers are happy cows, free-range beef that is ground and hand-formed in the restaurant every day. Guests can look through an over-sized window into Mighty Fine’s kitchen and observe their expert team carefully cutting, grinding and forming the patties by hand throughout the day. Mighty Fine only uses all-natural chuck that contains no antibiotics, hormones or preservatives which is always strictly vegetarian-fed. Fries are crinkle-cut, shakes are Blue Bell, and that’s all there is.

The good thing about weddings is …

The good thing about weddings? Champagne and cake.

Even better?

As wedding season rolls around, there are a ton of events centered around weddings where you get to sample the aforementioned champagne and cake. YUM!

Tonight, hit Second Street decor store Finch from 5-8pm for a mini-bridal extravaganza. Even if there’s no wedding in your future, free updos and makeup from milk + honey might be enough to lure you in:

Finch Bridal Event

If wedded bliss you’d rather miss, then go ahead and head out to Bee Caves for the Anna Gray Grand Opening Party, co-hosted by Austin Monthly magazine and featuring a Kendra Scott trunk show.

The best part here? Free food and wine from The Grove, a FANTASTIC restaurant tucked into a strip mall right off Bee Caves and 360. Once you’re at The Grove, I promise you’ll have no idea you’re in a strip mall and you’ll be loving your tasty and affordable wine flight, nibbling on eight different types of bruschetta, and downing mussels like there’s no tomorrow. Or, if you’re at the Anna Gray event, you’ll be doing the same, only from a cocktail napkin in a jewelry boutique–props to anyone brave enough to open retail right now!

New Mighty Fine Burgers + other local restaurants!

I remember when the “old” Mighty Fine was new, in the Arbor Walk, when the Arbor Walk was still new too … oh, Austin, you’re growing up so fast.

Anyway, before I romantically delve into the past, Mighty Fine Burgers is the burger version of Austin-standby Rudy’s BBQ. The menu keeps it simple with burger or dog choices in red, white, or yellow. Fries are hand-cut (remember the buzz over the original’s $40,000 fry-cutter? The thin, crunchy strips don’t disappoint) and milkshakes are hand-scooped Blue Bell, natch. Tables are long picnic style for sharing and making new friends.

In short, Mighty Fine is just that. I’m not sure that their meat is free-range–it’s “all natural,” but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t raised sans hormones in tiny cages, so I haven’t been back since the first time I tried ‘em over a year ago.  I remember the flavor being excellent. But now that the new store is open in Sunset Valley Village Shopping Center … who’s to say I can’t go just for the fries??

In other local chain news, austin360 ran an article yesterday on local chains who are expanding even during the recession. Read it here or just look at this list:

  • Mighty Fine Burgers – Sunset Valley opened yesterday, and a 3rd in Round Rock is under construction
  • Vivo – in the Lakeline Mall area. The east-side fave is known for delicious ‘ritas and healthy-ish Tex-Mex. Love it.
  • P. Terry’s – N. Lamar Boulevard between 33rd and 34th streets–stone’s throw from my house! So excited. Designed by Michael Hsu–is there anything new the dude isn’t designing?!
  • Mandola’s – the Houston chain that opened at the Triangle, will open at The Shops at the Galleria in Bee Cave this summer
  • Maudie’s – opening #6 location later this year.

Weekend Watch: free yoga, crazy marathoners, and grand openings

lululemon on 6th & Lamar does free yoga classes taught by rotating instructors from around the city every Saturday morning, but they’re usually way too early for me. This time, however, they’re honoring the two crazy Canadians who are running a marathon a day to help save the environment, and they’re gonna be there doing some yoga! Check out Matt and Steph, who are completing an 11,000-mile run across Canada and around the USA, at www.runforoneplanet.com. Stretching it out for their impending 26.2 miles? Since I was planning on going to CrossFitAustin‘s Saturday team workout at 10am, I might just make the 8:30-9:30am call, where Yoga Yoga instructors are teaching this month.

If, and this will probably end up being me despite my best intentions, not even marathoners can get you out of bed, you’re in luck: lululemon is ALSO hosting a special yoga class Sunday night, January 18th @ 6pm – with those crazy runners.

Reward yourself for your hard work yoga-ing, crossfitting, running, whatever it may be, by attending the Grand Opening Party for Corey Michael Salon, downtown this Saturday at 6 pm. Across from Eddie V’s, Corey Michael is convenient, and this part is even more convenient: enjoy cocktails, music, food, networking, and even a red carpet. I went to an event recently where Corey Michael was doing makeovers, and not one to say no to letting someone play with my hair, I let one of their stylists “have at it. Do whatever you like.” While it wasn’t my fave style, at least she totally went for it and didn’t make me boring! Plus, she complimented me on my haircolor, which, we all know, I get done at Pink Salon. So if you go to the party and end up liking the stylists, mention Austin Tidbits (where I got all this info) when you book an appointment and receive $25 off any service!

Designer Clearance House

Driving down Burnet Road the other day, I was stopped in my tracks by the Designer Clearance House. This rarely happens to me, but who am I to turn down Designer clearances? I turn my car around and pop into the little shop to be greeted by a friendly man named Lalo. I ignore him in favor of the shoes … Sam Edelman flats, Loeffler Randall heels, Dolce Vita for $39?! Another section with shoes for just $59?! Then, another section with shoes for … well, more, but still deeply discounted?! So exciting.

Plus, they have clothes! All of their clothes come from an exclusive deal with Houston upscale retailer Tootsie’s and are offered at an astounding 75% off of retail price. There was a stunning red Badgley Mischka strapless dress for a mere $112! Lalo told me all about how they started as an appointment-only designer shoe clearance house, but then they made the deal with Tootsie’s, and now they have a permanent home (this one, on Burnet) with real store hours: Mon-Fri 10-7, Sat 10-6 & Sun 12-4.

And then the sweet man said to me, “We just have a lot of fun. We love it.”

A retailer who just loves selling shoes on the cheap and fancy schmancy dresses for super-marked-down prices? Dear Lalo, we’re going to have a lot of fun together, and we’re definitely going to love it.

From their website, written by Lalo’s daughter-in-law, Spring:

A recent arrival at the store is designer and couture apparel at HUGE discounts! We currently have the following clothing brand (to name a few): Fabulous party dresses from Nicole Miller, fun summer shifts from Diane VonFurstenburg, loungewear from Juicy Couture, street wear and party dresses from BCBG, separates by Elie Tahari, mother-of-the-bride suits by Armani, occasion dresses from Kay Unger, and all sorts of goodies from Alice and Olivia, Trina Turk, Theory, Robert Rodriguez and Nanette Lepore.

Right now, we have shoes from Loeffler Randall, D&G, Tori Burch, Cole Haan, Moschino, Michael Kors, Bolo, Ashley Deerborn, Guiseppe Zanotti, London Sole, Martinez Valero, Rafe, Dolce Vita and MANY more great brands.

Go check it out; I know I need to get back!!

More free cupcakes! UPDATE: not free

We know I’m not a huge Hey! Cupcake fan–not that I hate them, I just don’t think they’re the best–but we also know that I AM a huge FREE cupcake fan. So how could I let you miss out on the Hey! Cupcake North Grander Opening (since it’s been open for a bit now) party tomorrow?

There will be live music, games, and FREE cupcakes! Festivities start at noon and will go until the cupcakes run out. (nope, no cupcakes)

Oh, and to my commentor who accused me of both smoking a cigarette and liking Taco Bell’s queso because I don’t like Hey! Cupcake, let me just tell you that a) I’ll have a Sugar Mama’s vs. Hey! Cupcake blind taste throwdown any day; and b) smoking and Taco Bell are both disgusting.

UPDATE: Cupcakes are NOT free.

Rumors! La Condesa + Walton’s

A new restaurant from the Lambert’s team called La Condesa (Mexican food?) is scheduled to open in February ’09, directly across from Lambert’s at the corner of Guadalupe and 2nd Street.  Chef Rene Ortiz of New York’s La Esquina (the corner, haha) will lead the restaurant and Lambert’s Executive Chef Larry McGuire will assist in the beginning. The restaurant will also feature a hip lounge called Malverde above it.

Over on West Sixth, Walton’s Fancy & Staple is moving in and will provide … um, flowers and a deli? Maybe they say it best:

“Walton’s Florist & Nursery has served the Austin & West Lake Hills area from our Bee Caves Road location. Construction is underway for a Walton’s downtown location at 609 W. 6th (across from Katz’s). We’ll offer downtown residents, businesses & visitors exquisite arrangements, beautiful bouquets, gift baskets, comprehensive design services, interior & outdoor plants for the home or office – all available for walk-in customers & by delivery. Walton’s downtown will include a traditional delicatessen & bakery (for folks on the go), & sidewalk café seating. Our Grand Opening is scheduled for late 2008. We look forward to fulfilling your fanciest floral, gift-giving & event design wishes.”

OH YEAH, and Lambert’s has a brunch?! Has anyone been?!
