Piranha Killer Sushi Opens Today

But the ladies and I nabbed a spot at Piranha Killer Sushi‘s packed soft opening last night and got a chance to sink our teeth deep into the sushi (and martini) menu.

In contrast to most of the other sushi places in town, Piranha is bright with lots of light and light-colored wood–the wine racks are even clear, giving the illusion that the bottles are floating on the wall. I was surprised at first, but it makes sense with Piranha’s whole attitude. The sushi bar is in the center of the room, with low-slung wooden tables scattered about. We had a small table at the front, but I’ll get to that in a minute. First, let’s talk food and drinks.

They have an extensive martini menu organized by flavor: straight, semi-sweet, sweet, dessert, etc. We tried a few and found that all were delicious. They fit pretty well within their descriptions, and contrary to convention, even the sweet weren’t TOO sweet. Which was awesome. Faves were the Naught Asian (no really) and Cowboytini (what man would order that?).  Perhaps even more importantly, our waiter could talk about the drinks and recommend them, and his recommendations were spot on.

Same goes for the food. Tony, our charming if slightly nervous waiter, recommended their spicy tuna roll, and it didn’t disappoint. I don’t generally like spicy tuna, but this was  panko-encrusted and flash fried, which gave it a tasty crunch to counteract that mushy spicy tuna inside. We ordered several others, including Tony’s recommendations the Latino and the Spider, and they were delicious. Creative and totally different than most combinations in rolls. Many of Piranha’s rolls rely heavily on cream cheeses and tempura, but we managed to steer clear of most of those while ordering all of this:

In the foreground, you see the Marry Me roll, an interesting roll topped by strawberries. Works surprisingly well. Then the Latino roll and a rainbow roll. We did step slightly out of the roll comfort zone and try a sashimi salad appetizer (tasty but a little too mayo-y) and some red snapper nigiri. It was amazing. Fresh and light.

Our other apps were crab cakes and mussells. The mussells were in a buttery saffron sauce, which was really good. But they didn’t give us the proper utensils, so trying to eat mussells with chopsticks proved to be an interesting endeavor. Same goes for the crab cake: we divvied them up by splitting them with chopsticks.

At the end, Tony convinced us that we MUST try the fried ice cream. So we did:

Cons: back to that small table, it was too small. And I hope it’s just because we were at the front, but I think not, it was really, really loud inside. Like, horrible-place-for-a-second-date, great-place-for-a-first-date loud. But with the brightness on the inside, no one really thought it was lounge-y anyway, right? You’re there for the innovative, creative menu that actually isn’t like anything else in town.

With martinis at $9, the spider roll at $11, most rolls between $9 and $13, nigiri between $2-3.50, and lunch bentos between $10-$14, Piranha is in a pretty good spot for Killer Sushi. They don’t have a happy hour right now, but keep your fingers crossed (and they’d have to in order to compete with Imperia’s badass 2-for-1).

MY Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf: 38th & Lamar

I met a girl yesterday who reads This is Life in Austin, and she described me as “the girl who is obsessed with CrossFit and TRIO happy hour.”

Hrmph. Not untrue. But hrmph nonetheless.

I’m also pretty admittedly obsessed with Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, and Alexandra’s Cookie Dreams cookies. Finally my dreams have come true: a new Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf is opening at 38th & Lamar.

I have struggled mightily to find the perfect coffeeshop in my Brykerwoods neighborhood. I’ve frequented at many, but none has become a regular haunt. I spend more time at the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf on S Lamar, which is not close to my house, than I do any of the joints close to me.

It’s not just the NSA Mocha Ice Blended (ok, it mostly is), it’s the atmosphere. Clean & bright without being sterile. Trendy but doesn’t shy from its trendy vibe (here’s looking at you, Spiderhouse), which lends it a comfortable-in-its-skin, laid-back feel. Yes, I’m still talking about a coffeeshop. Frankly, I always know what I’m gonna get. My coffee will always be delicious. I cannot say the same for any other coffeeshop anywhere close to me.

Just like the first Austin store, there will be tasty offerings from a hand picked selection of local artisan bakers, including Alexandra’s Cookie Dreams, Austinuts, Bakermans Bakery, Mary Louise Butters Brownies and Round Rock Donuts. In addition, the store will maintain a strong emphasis on giving back to the surrounding community with its support of Austin-based non-profit organizations, HeartGift and Blue Dog Rescue. Sushi Zushi Opens Today!

… but I snuck in for the soft opening Saturday night and enjoyed some fantastic rolls amongst a few kinks to be worked out. Behold, the rolls:

Sushi rolls at Sushi ZushiSushi Zushi is a chain with outposts in Dallas and San Antonio; their Dallas-monikered Oak Lawn Roll was easily our favorite–and recommended by the server. It’s on the far left, then a Spider Roll, Summer Roll, Sushi Zushi riceless roll, and a Valentine’s Roll. I was excited that they offered rolls intended to be riceless, and their signature one at that. It didn’t disappoint, with crunchy asparagus lending a new texture to smooth fish, which really got to shine without rice.

BOTH SIDES. They have rolls grouped into specialty and then types of fish, and offer plenty of warm (cooked) appetizers and some “Japanese Comfort Food.” We didn’t try any of this, though I sort of regret that decision.

The two girls I was with ordered martinis: a sweet tea one that was good, and their signature cucumber, which was, in a word, bad. It was creamy and had sake in it, which was weird, and then was rimmed with spicy chili lime salt, which was, again, just weird. She disliked it so much that she sent it back and asked for a green tea martini, which was delicious–and strong!

Service was exceptionally friendly, which made up for our waitress’s obvious inexperience–ordered after drinks, appetizers nonetheless arrived before drinks. Then we waited for quite some time for the sushi. The timing could use some work. But it’s a soft opening, so we filled out a survey to let them know this, and I think they’ll have these kinks worked out soon if not for today’s Grand Opening.

Prices were all over the place: a Spider Roll was just $8 (cheap!) but a California Roll was $7-11 depending on what type of crab (expensive!) Edamame came in a tiny bowl and was $5. Drinks were between $7-10. Wine was probably the best drink bargain, at a reasonable $6-11 range by the glass. For me, it needs a second shot before I rule on its place in the downtown sushi pecking order.

I love Saturdays: CrossFit before Cupcakes, with a side of (512) Beer

Saturdays in Austin are sometimes lazy recovery days, and sometimes jam-packed adventure days. OK, who am I kidding, they’re always adventurous, sometimes I just choose to laze about instead of partaking. But this Saturday I won’t be missing out on any of these awesome events:

9-11:30am: The Movement @ RunTex on Lake Austin Blvd

The Movement is a CrossFit block party celebration post-workout … free UTB (and bring the kiddos, there’ll be a free CrossFit Kids workout too!) from 8-9am, then partay with breakfast tacos from Taco Deli and CrossFit stuff like:

The beer will be flowing at the baby brewery, which boasts such amazing beers as the (512) Pecan Porter. I cannot wait to taste the 1st Anniversary Ale, (512) ONE, a Belgian-Style Strong Ale with organic base grains, Forbidden Fruit yeast, domestic hops and local Good Flow wildflower honey. Mmmmm. 4-7pm: Cupcake Smackdown at One-2-One Bar

Cupcake Smackdown

Austin’s first Cupcake Smackdown includes a blind tasting contest of all the store front bakeries, an amateur baking contest, a cupcake silent auction, the people’s popular vote, and a cupcake eating contest for both dogs and humans! Live music will be performed by Arielle Nicole.

For the blind tasting, a panel of local chefs and foodies will be chowing down on vanilla, chocolate, and a baker’s choice cupcake from each of the eight store front shops. Each cupcake will be judged on the flavor, texture, and aroma.

Other activities include a bake off in which amateur bakers can enter either the vanilla, chocolate, or freestyle cupcake competition. There will be two categories for the cupcake eating contest: one for human participants and one for canine participants. Canines will be eating pupcakes for speed (not quantity). Ginger carrot pupcakes provided by Grand Dog Bakery. Spectators will also be invited to vote for the People’s Choice award for any of the store front bakeries, vote for the cutest cupcake at the Smackdown, and also participate in a cupcake silent auction. Proceeds to go to Wine and Food Foundation of Texas.

The event is kid and dog friendly. Pre-entries for the cupcake eating contest are being accepted and will be accepted until the day of the event pending space. Each entry for the eating contests costs $10. Entry forms for the eating contests are available at All-In-One Bakeshop on 183. Please bring water and a spray bottle to keep your dog cool. It will be hot. Admission to the event is free. Please tip your bartender.

That boy is headed to Rise Against with Rancid at Stubb’s. Should be a good time, look for a tall Vermon(s)ter standing outside before the show trying to sell you a ticket.

River! Post CrossFit workout, headed to float the Comal at Landa Falls (http://www.landafalls.com/). It’s home of the longest ride on the Comal.

Ghostland Observatory at Whitewater Rocks! rocking out, followed by “luxury camping” in a vacant house with no furniture or appliances, but working a/c. Perfect way to camp in a Texas summer.

Were I in town, I’d head to the Grand Opening of 360 Fitness at the Triangle. Co-sponsored by Austin Monthly, there’ll be free sushi by Koi, massages, fitness assessments, and footbed running analysis, plus beer and wine. Get your drink on while getting your fit on? Um, whatever.

Annie’s Grand Opening Tomorrow

Annie’s has gotten lots of buzz lately from foodies and old-timers who miss Apple Annie’s, a 26-year-old restaurant that spent a year catering-only and then reopened its doors as Annie’s just last week. Now (and by now I mean tomorrow, Wednesday, from 10:30am-3pm) is the time for the Grand Opening Celebration. There’ll be a ribbon-cutting at 10:30am with free lemonade passed out until 3pm.

The nearly ‘round-the-clock bistro and bar-meets-delicious-takeout hub-meets-continental-sidewalk-café now located on Congress Avenue will begin serving normal hours June 22nd, when they go from lunch-only to full service dinner, late-night, zinc bar, coffee bar, and full dessert menu. Monday- Wednesday 7am-10pm, Thursday 7am-midnight, Friday 7am-2am, Saturday 8am – 2am, and Sunday brunch service will begin in July.

Executive Chef Mark Schmidt has created a farm-to-table menu features fresh, simple ingredients from local purveyors. He’s taken the gourmet twist on down-home favorites approach to Annie’s signature menu. Schmidt has received numerous accolades including glowing reviews in The New York Times as well as several honors from Food & Wine and the James Beard Foundation in New York City. He has made four trips to the James Beard House, the most recent in March 2007.

Mighty Fine is taking over Austin!

Shortly after expanding south, Mighty Fine Burgers is stretching up northward too, for its third location. Mighty Fine Burgers, Fries & Shakes opens its third location at the University Oaks Shopping Center (next to IKEA) today.

The company behind the concept – K&N Management -is sure that Mighty Fine will be a big hit with burger lovers and quality-conscious diners alike. The same company runs the four Austin locations of Rudy’s Country Store & Bar-B-Q, where they take quality and service seriously. You won’t find a drive-thru, but a welcoming dining room where you share picnic tables with blue and white checkered tablecloths with other diners.

The hamburgers are happy cows, free-range beef that is ground and hand-formed in the restaurant every day. Guests can look through an over-sized window into Mighty Fine’s kitchen and observe their expert team carefully cutting, grinding and forming the patties by hand throughout the day. Mighty Fine only uses all-natural chuck that contains no antibiotics, hormones or preservatives which is always strictly vegetarian-fed. Fries are crinkle-cut, shakes are Blue Bell, and that’s all there is.
