I Don’t Know Jack About Music

Remember that early ’90s computer game “You Don’t Know Jack About Sports!” where you had to answer trivia or the game yelled at you? And then it spiraled into other “You Don’t Know Jack About ____” bananas, coffee, snowballs. Whatever. I don’t claim to be a music critic, or even afficionado (except when it comes to country–yeehaw!). BUT I do love this little band called Achachay! that’s playing Friday night at 7pm at Momo’s.

Achachay!’s music is pretty sweet: funk rock, they say, with a wildly energetic frontman (who may or may not be related to me) and quietly cool sunglasses-clad drummer. But I enjoy their communicados, via blog and email, almost as much (more?) than their music. Check out achachay.com for their silly, crazy, smart, sassy information.

See you at Momo’s at 7 on Friday!

Speaking of good communicators, I got an email from a band I’ve never heard of that sounds equally zany and fun. It went something like this:

If you do decide to post any of this … we’ll send you a herd of puppies.

We are playing a house show on Sat. Oct 17 with Woodgrain, Butcher and the Bear and FM Campers. Anyone who goes can pick up a free demo with a handmade case, (each one is different!) or we’ll have a bucket of art supplies and you can make your own. Come hang out if you get a chance, we’ll make you a custom cd, maybe share toothpaste, exchange platonic backrubs and perhaps play an exciting game of bingo.
Here’s the flyer:

I may not know Jack about music, but I like creative, fun people and can only assume people with that much creativity can make some sweet music too.

Sometimes, even you can’t charm your way in

OK, so we normally quest for the free: free swag, free food, free booze. But sometimes, even the craftiest and sneakiest and in-the-knowiest have to pay to play at the events with the best swag, food, booze … or maybe the feel-good feelings you get donating to a good cause give you the kind of juice you can’t get at the open bar. For those with some cash to spend, check these out (in chronological order, get your calendar out now):

Slow Food event

Slow Food Feast in the Field

Honestly, this is the event that sparked this whole post. I got an earnest email from a parent asking me to post on it, because the event supports the Austin Discover School (a tuition-free charter school serving children in grades K-5 with a pro-social approach to learning and an organic Junior Master Gardener® program). Anyway, you’ll enjoy an evening of fresh local food and wine served on the farm under twinkling stars while supporting this unique school.  Chef Jesse Bloom of Ecstatic Cuisine will be preparing a five course dinner paired with wines from Flat Creek Estates. Green Gate Farms is a small historic farm in East Austin.  Come explore the grounds, participate in the silent auction, and sit down to a slow feast, fresh from the field.

Tickets are $100 each, 7pm, Green Gate Farms, 8310 Canoga Avenue, Austin TX 78724

Click Here to Purchase Tickets or send a check to:
Austin Discovery School
8509 FM 969 Suite 200
Austin, TX  78724

Tickets may also be purchased at the front office of the school

… see, don’t you feel warm and fuzzy?

Imperia 2nd Anniversary Party – Free Cocktails & Sushi

I can hardly believe it was 2 years ago that I hit up Imperia’s grand opening–and almost immediately bounced because it was SO CROWDED. One of my fave happy hour joints sure knows how to throw a party, but I can only hope for my own sake (and the sake of my free-sushi-loving-wallet) that this iteration is a little less packed.

The deets: On Wednesday August 26, they’ll have regular happy hour (by regular I mean Award-Winning 2 for 1 Happy Hour getthefreakinseabass) from 4-7pm.

In reverse Cinderella fashion, at the stroke of 7, complimentary martinis and cocktails will start to flow with passed hors d’oeuvres and live music.

Imperia Invite Can’t read anything on that? Neither can I, but I told you all the good stuff anyway.

Teacher Thursday: The Lennings

The LenningsWhen adorable drummer Ross, huband of blogger at last week’s Bleet Up, started telling me about his band The Lennings and how they have this great new EP, Geographic Tongue, I gave him my familiar line: “sounds cool, but I don’t really cover music unless it’s got another angle to it, or I think it’s really cool.” I asked him what was cool and different about the Lennings, and he said:

  • We’ve been on the scene for about three years and are now looking to the blog community to help connect us with new listeners.
  • The story of our coming to be a band is not too wild.  All five of us are teachers and basically met through that industry rather than the music scene.
  • That’s all I can think of for now.
An Electroacoustic / Rock / Folk band made up of teachers? Um, yes, that’s interesting. Interesting enough that it’s worth checking out their video premiere & show at Moose Lodge tonight, starting at 8pm. Directions: http://www.austinmooselodge.org/directions.html

Friday Edition of Choose Your Own Adventure: $40, $2, or $1 dollars

I have been posting like a fool the past few days–forgive me. Lots of interesting events and ideas have come my way, and I can hardly keep up with it all. This is Life in Austin is also co-hosting Ford’s 2010 Taurus TweetUp Sunday night at Opal Divine’s from 5:30-7:30pm, so definitely think about checking that out (invite here) and taking the new ole Taurus for a spin.

Last night’s ATX Bleet-Up was a blog-tastic time at the ever-fabulous Four Seasons’ TRIO. Tolly of Austin Eavesdropper fame played hostess with mostess, connecting bloggers young and old, hip and un, together for mingling and putting faces onto previously anonymous cyberspace pals. Then Austin Monthly hosted their Bachelor Issue Party with a Cold Stone-style guacamole mashup bar, which was much better than the regular bar, which was packed because free Grey Goose cocktails (like the cucumber ‘ritajito or something) were flowing. Good times had by all, always, because if there’s one thing AM knows it’s how to throw a party and pack the house.

Now for upcoming events, the Choose Your Own Adventure portion of this program:

I’ve resisted posting on the Miracle Berry Flavor Tripping parties because frankly, it just doesn’t sound that interesting to me. They say this miracle berry makes:

- citrus fruits like lemons and limes taste sweet
- oranges and grapefruits tasted dipped in sugar
- goat cheese tastes like frosting
- vinegar is smooth enough to drink
- cheap tequila tastes like top shelf
- bologna sandwiches taste like cheesecake
- stout beers taste like chocolate milkshakes

But I like citrus fruits and goat cheese and stout beers, thankyouverymuch, and I’m not interested in eating vinegar, cheap tequila, or bologna sandwiches anyway.

Nonetheless, I see the allure. And Jenny, the Berry Fairy herself, is a persistent lady. After Wednesday’s event, James writes about it here and the Austin Examiner writes about it here, I’m slightly more intrigued. Both had a good time. Miracle berries are a fruit indigenous to West Africa. Scientists say a protein in the fruit works by binding to taste buds and altering the tongue’s so-called sweet receptors to activate when sour foods are eaten. Miracle berries are only good for 2-3 days after they are picked and so they are very rare, expensive, and hard to obtain.  Likewise, it is difficult to get a large volume of them. So in this party there’s the whisper of something new and forbidden and the exclusivity of time. And an open Tito’s vodka bar.

Of course, exclusivity never comes cheap. Tickets for Friday’s affair are $40, but include food and booze. 6-8pm, Belmont.

If you’re looking for cheap, try a $2 $1 event:

The All Austin All handmade Bash at the Beauty Bar July 31st 7-11pm

Entry is $2, but half off with online sign-up or by bringing in the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) event flyer. I signed up online and didn’t think twice about it, but thanks to a friend for pointing out: I don’t know much about the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, but I really wonder how well an event flyer (presumably on paper?) helps them achieve their goals?

Touche’, O’Dea, touche’.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY (PARTY) CHRISTINE!! (birthday isn’t til Monday … cheater)

Because I’m a responsible blogger: I was contacted by Ogilvy Public Relations on behalf of Ford Motor Company to arrange a blogger meet up for Ford‘s Summer of Taurus 100 City Tour.  I was compensated for my time in arranging this meet up, including inviting other bloggers and helping to select a venue.  I have not been paid for any product review of the Taurus and any opinion about the Ford Taurus or Ford Motor Company expressed on this blog is my own.

CrossFit Games Celebration at CrossFit Central, 7pm-?
You’re probably only interested in this if you’re part of the CF community, but nonetheless there’s a little par-tay up at the gym starting at 7pm. They’re providing a nacho bar, you BYOB. I’ll be toting Nalgene margaritas (yep, there still 3 in my freezer), so that should make for a good time.
