Tuesday Networking

AIMEN (Austin Internet Marketing Entrepreneur Network) is hosting their monthly mingling happy hour at Six Lounge Tuesday night. The group is generally for copywriters, graphic designers, coders, geeks, stay-at-home blogger-moms, and anyone into the internet, really. Love the later time, it allows for a workout between work and networking!

Thursday: Steak or Fashion?

Steak

You might say the answer to that question divides along gender lines, but really, it’s a toss-up for me. Houston legend Perry’s Steakhouse and Grille hosts a Grand Opening dinner Thursday night with four courses and wine pairings from the restaurant’s exclusive private label. The restaurant is in the Norwood building where a bank used to be, and the old vault doubles as a wine cellar and seating area. Bad ass! Luckily for me, the $125 ticket makes my decision for me. (512) 474-6300.

Fashion

For the poorer of us, Soigné Boutique & Slate Men’s Apparel on Burnet Rd. are hosting mixing-and-mingling cocktail hour that also includes a Poppies Jewelry trunk show and Common Threadz fashion show.

7 pm – 9 pm. Complimentary cocktails, 20% off of all clothes and shoes, and 100% of Common Threadz clothing sales go directly back to the non-profit organization.

For every CommonThreadz t-shirt bought, the company: 1) educates and builds awareness for charities and causes related to the projects the community selects, 2) provides an orphan or vulnerable child a school uniform for each shirt sold, and 3) raises funds for the causes represented in the designs. After the organization’s wholesale cost for the shirts, 100% of remaining proceeds directly fund the charity selected for the t-shirt design.

Free drinks and socially-conscious tees? Sorry Perry’s, as much as I’d love your jumbo lump crabcake and perfectly seasoned filet, I’m gonna have to … well I have no choice. Sigh.

Wine and Women

You know how we can never find anything cool to do on Tuesdays? Cameron Hughes wine (do you know their story?) and Austin Woman magazine are hosting a networking event at Land Rover this Tuesday featuring Jessica Kogan, one of the founders of Cameron Hughes wine. From 6-8pm, the event features tons of networking opportunities and wine tasting opportunities … doesn’t get much better than that!

Nerd Alert: New Google BROWSER

Hey-o! Sometimes my nerdy side comes out and I get really excited about techy things, like the new Google browser! It’s an open-source browser called Chrome that beta-launched today and for Windows only–booo! So far, the reviews have been good, and I can’t wait for my chance to test it on my Mac!

Right now I use Flock, a browser few people know but I think is great. It’s made for social networking, but I rarely use those features. I love its RSS feed bar and its lack of glitches the most. I was having problems with Firefox closing down for no reason, Safari has silly capabilities, and IE is just out of the question. So I had nowhere to turn until I found Flock, and I haven’t had any problems with it. Fab! I might convert to Chrome when it gets Mac’d though, just because I love google.

Coworking– it’s all the rage

I know not everyone out there freelances, and not everyone who freelances wishes for coworkers. I am a freelancers but don’t wish for coworkers at all, actually, as I enjoy working by myself. BUT it is fun to be around other creatives and in a work environment, hence the nationwide co-working trend. The other night at the mashable event (social networking), I met one of the guys who started Conjunctured, the coworking house on East 7th. It’s gotten some TV news coverage and was the first of its kind in Austin, though now there’s a second coworking space planned for downtown called LaunchPad.

Anyway, the Grand Opening is this Saturday and totally open to everyone. The invite is on facebook. I think the concept is cool, and free, open parties are always cool for meeting new people and exploring new things!

New Austin beer! 512 Brewery

(512) Brewing officially released its first beers, the WIT and the Pale, into the wild today!

The (512) WIT is available now at the Draught House Pub and Brewery on Medical Parkway. The (512) PALE is currently available at Uncle Billy’s Brew & Que on Barton Springs Road. If I didn’t have so many events tonight and tomorrow, I’d be at one of those two to try this beer out …

They haven’t announced the date for the Grand Opening Tour and Tasting, but the website said “coming in the next couple of weeks.”  I’m excited and will keep you posted!

As far as tonight goes, I’m heading to Buffalo Billiards for the mashable event I talked about a few days ago, missing out on Wednesday Zilker volleyball. :-(

Networking: The Outlaw List + Mashable

So I went to an Acton MBA luncheon Friday (the entrenpreneurial MBA, they say), and I met some cool people, one of whom runs a list for young professionals called The Outlaw List. His last name is seriously Outlaw–how cool is that?

Anyway, the list is all about networking–apparently Mr. Outlaw himself is a networker extraordinaire (and I thoroughly enjoyed meeting him, so I’d believe it) and is all about getting people in Austin connected to others. I’m for it!

The other thing I wanted to write about, that I saw in The Outlaw List email but also have been thinking about for a few weeks now, is Summer Mash Austin. Mashable.com is THE site for social networking news, and they host a social-networking get-together in select cities around the country, Austin being one of them. It’s this coming Wednesday at Buffalo Billiards. The $18 ticket includes bar food, drink tickets, chances to play games like Wii and Rock Band (is that still cool enough for people to advertise it?), and the priceless opportunity to meet other cool Mashables people (nerds).

Seriously, I’m really excited for the event. It’s like a night of SXSW interactive in July instead of March. Even if you’re busy this Wednesday, make sure to check out mashable.com for all your social networking news … it’s not geeky, it’s the future. ;-)

Networking on Wednesday

So this Wednesday night at Pangaea is Net Party, a partying/networking hybrid. Not that it sounds all that different from normal networking functions to me, except that it draws a different sort of crowd. Apparently it’s quite the singles scene, as well, so business cards are exchanged as much for dates as they are for lead generation.

Pangaea is an interesting club to me … I’ve only been to their grand opening (open bar …) and a few hosted events there, so I’ve never witnessed it in its regular-weekend glory. Does it have regular-weekend glory? It was quite controversial when it showed up on the Austin scene, mainly because detractors argued that Austin didn’t need or wasn’t ready for a hoity-toity place with a velvet rope, sparklers in their bottle service, and cage dancers. Of course, those detractors failed to realize that outside of need and readiness lie want and novelty, so Pangaea has so far been successful–depending on how you define success.

I prefer cheaper drinks and friendlier people, but a dressed-up night out at Pangaea isn’t unappealing either. And the time frame of this NetParty–6:00 to 10:00pm–makes it a nice tweener time that could stay happy hour or turn into a night on the town … with new friends, natch! FYI, the half-price drinks and free apps are only until 8pm.

I’m not sure when they close the RSVP, but you have to RSVP to get in free. There’s a $25 charge at the door (or so they say … I can’t imagine anyone charging $25 for a HAPPY HOUR).

AND:

Tribeza is also hosting a happy hour at Lambert’s with free apps and live music. There will be drinks too, but no telling if they’re free or not.

Networking happy hours

As I have experienced the business world–and do take into account that my business is the media–I have come to the conclusion that it is almost entirely about who you know. That said, if you know someone but the quality of your work is shoddy, it won’t help you at all. But frankly, if you don’t know someone and you have awesome work, there’s a very small chance that anyone will ever see it. You have to be tough and tenacious and, well, meet people!

Which brings me to tonight’s activity: the mediabistro.com all-media party. This is an event set up for professionals in the media only (no interns or students) by the journalists’ go-to site mediabistro. The site has become the hub of journalism news, industry scoop, and job postings. Anyway, everyone who is anyone in Austin media has made an appearance at one of these happy hours or another.

And I, a writer who has been back in Austin for just over a year, have been to every single one of these happy hours. And at every single one, I have met someone who has gotten me a assignment or assignment lead. Looking back, I’m kind of amazed. Moral of the story: go network!

Tonight’s all-media party is at Cedar Door from 5:30-7:30. Or 6-8. I got two conflicting emails, so I’ll probably go from 6-7:30.
