Weekend Calendar

There’s a lot going on this weekend! Here’s a calendar:

Friday: Roger Creager at Midnight Rodeo

Texas music classic, big dance floor, $10 cover, $2.75 Coors Light, $3.25 Crown Royal … what more could you really want from Friday night?

SATURDAY

10am-1pm: As always, sand volleyball at Zilker starting at 10 am. atxvb.com for more info, but really, just show up and play.

Splitting Time Between:

Veggie Dog Eating Contest at Scholz Garten from 1 to 4pm

The best thing to happen to vegetarians since … I don’t know. Anyway, iLoveMikeLitt is some strange social and cultural organization that just throws parties as far as I can tell, but they’re throwing this shindig and there’s still time to sign up to compete! If you just want to watch, it’s $5 for a veggie dog and unlimited vegan ice cream. Local vegetarian celebs (like Deb O’Keefe from 101X) will be on hand for the revelry. Do512 is offering $1 off of the $5 cover if you RSVP through the site.

Clarksville Cookout at West Austin park from 1 – 3pm

The Clarksville neighborhood is trying to create a sense of community with their website, and now a cookout! There will be limited, but delicious, quantities of hot dogs, water, soda, and even some treats for dogs. They’re also giving away t-shirts to the first 35 people.

SummerFest at Guero’s from noon to 9:30pm!

mrandmrsmays is a crazy group, so much fun to watch. The rest of the lineup is pretty stellar too:

Have a great weekend!

Review: El Chile North (you know, the free ‘ritas)

I was thoroughly impressed by El Chile North–I haven’t been to the East Austin one, but the food was superb. They serve chips and salsa in little bowls, which one of my companions deemed “classier than a big one.” I thought it just looked like more work for our server, but whatever. The salsa is a bean-y concoction that I wasn’t sure I would approve of, being a lover of tomato salsa, but it was delicious enough that my table went through three bowls.

I ordered the Tamal Azteca, a cheesy, veggie casserole-style layered tortilla, saucy mess. It was a delicious mess, the sauce on top was spicy but sweet, the veggies were actually veggies like zucchini and squash, not just onion and tomato–though they were in there too. My one complaint about it was that my portion was tiny–so small, when the waitress placed the plate on my table another companion said, “you got gypped!” In all honesty, it was a perfect size for me to  eat, and a nice departure from the enormous serving sizes restaurants normally dish up. But, it looked a little lonely on my plate.

And the margaritas … yes, they were indeed free, but that did not stop the bartender from using a heavy hand on the tequila! I thoroughly enjoyed the flavor, it was very tangy and not too sweet, which is usually my complaint with restaurant ‘ritas. Definitely worth the entree price!

El Chile North is not actually on Far West, it’s just north of Far West on Greystone, in a little strip mall shopping center. I liked the location, they had a cute patio with a view of north Austin–although a friend not-so-sweetly pointed out that there’s also a view of the Golden Arches. In any case, I endorse the new El Chile, especially during this time of free margaritas! (2 with an entree purchase)

Free Margaritas!!

So Austin favorite El Chile just opened up a location at Far West, and they don’t have their liquor license, so they’re giving away two free margaritas with an entree purchase!

El Chile and fast-food kid sister El Chilito are Manor Road faves, hot with the UT crowd and downtown dwellers and workers. I’ve never been, but it’s on my list of restaurants to visit. And now I can, up north, with free margaritas! I’m not sure of the exact location, but Far West isn’t that big, right? I’m planning on going tonight, and given that it’s Cinco de Mayo, I’m pretty sure it’ll be packed. I’ll report back.

Review: Sago Modern Mexican

Based on cocktails and appetizers alone, Sago was delicious! Their signature Z-Martini is a spicy-sweet number sweetened with agave nectar–low on the GI scale, so less of an impact on your blood sugar!–and it even has little pieces of crushed jalapeno floating throughout! We also tried a martini whose name I can’t remember, sort of a blackberry margarita, and it tasted perfectly sweet and fresh-picked. Rob the cute bartender was just a bonus to the delicious drinks!

And the food they walked around with was an interesting selection: yucca fritters, portabello quesadillas, ceviche, campechana, and pork gorditas. The yucca fritters were by far the best–silky and squishy on the inside, crispy on the outside. One friend likened the app to what you would get if you could fry mashed potatoes. The other apps were good, except for the pork gordita. The meat lacked any real flavor–another friend with me mistook it for chicken!–and the fried shell was flavorless and soggy.

We didn’t try any “real food,” so I can’t really call this a real review of the place. But for drinks and appetizers, I’d definitely recommend it. It may be a little more expensive than other places in The Triangle ($8 martini), but the atmosphere here is swankier to go along with the prices. A third friend in my party said when we walked in, “This place is too classy for me, I’m just here to get drunk.” Look for the disco ball wall!

Rumor mill: Tribeza magazine had a photog at the event, which was sponsored by Austin Monthly. What’s up with that? Friendly competition? Working in tandem? Does anyone have the scoop?

Too many options Thursday!

So many events, so little time. Thursdays are hot in the ATX! (literally and figuratively, natch)

Top Billing: Sago Modern Mexican opening!

6:00-7:30pm … Sponsored by Austin Monthly and featuring free apps and martinis, the launch of this new restaurant in the Triangle should be an awesome event.

Others:

Austin Monthly is also hosting a trunk show/event at Ven Shoe & Handbag Salon … I didn’t know mags were allowed to sponsor TWO events in one night, but nonetheless, this event runs from 6-9 with apps by Imperia and cocktails, plus DJ Jericho One.

Tribeza magazine’s monthly happy hour at Shiki & Eliza Page

6:00-8:00pm … Free hors d’oeuvres and wine by TASTE Select wines, Delish Cupcakes, Tito’s Vodka, and Dry Soda. Make a purchase and enter to win a $100 spa gift certificate!

Estilo‘s “Through the Looking Glass” Spring Fashion Show

7:00-10:00 … a fanciful Alice in Wonderland take. Features a fashion show where the cocktails flow–made with 42 Below–and all the fashionistas go! 42 Below vodka drinks will be accompanied by catering by Suzanne Court.

Q: [sigh] What’s a hipster to do with so much to do??

A: … I’ll be at Sago! Look for a review tomorrow.
