Austin: SHAPE Magazine Diva Dash!

SHAPE magazine, the #1 women’s active lifestyle magazine and place where I got my start in journalism, is bringing a women’s-only obstacle adventure race to Austin! I am so excited, these big magazine-sponsored events never happen in Austin!

SHAPE will hit Walter E. Long Metropolitan Park (6614 Blue Bluff Rd, Austin) on April 9 with an adventure filled obstacle race made up of running, swinging, climbing, and dashing.  The journey will be held on 3 miles of road and trail, and the course will include stimulating activities along the way. This route will challenge participant’s strength, speed and balance with activities involving water, ropes, mazes and more and will offer alternative tracks designed for beginners.

The Diva Dash is for female runners and walkers of all abilities. More than 2,000 athletes are anticipated to participate—from novice to elite. Don’t feel up to the task quite yet?  Two training plans have been created that will get participants ready to take on each obstacle. Already a pro? The training plans incorporate work outs suited for every level, one of which is a do-it-yourself training clinic developed by the fitness experts at SHAPE magazine. Training takes place twice per week at RunTex Riverside (422 W. Riverside Dr).

Each woman who crosses the finish line will receive a SHAPE Diva Dash pewter necklace, and the grand prize winner will win a trip to Aruba.  Men are welcome to join the ladies at the after party, which will be held on-site and will be a celebration of the days success with music, prize contests, and other fun activities.

The SHAPE Diva Dash race benefits GENaustin, a non-profit organization serving teenage girls throughout the state of Texas. Presenting sponsors at the race include Acura, Athleta, and Luna.

Registration is now open, so sign up with your favorite ladies at www.DivaDash.com. Prices start at $35 in advance, and participants will also have the option to register the day-of.

SO EXCITED!!!!

Aspen: Plastics Make Food & Wine Possible?

Honestly, this is probably the number one thing people said to me as I started talking about being in Aspen for part of the summer — “Oh, are you going to Food & Wine?”

PMIP Aricle Image[1]

Well, no. Hopefully we can spring for a locals’ tasting, or at least hit up a cool afterparty. Unless, of course, I win this Take the Aspen Challenge! Plastics Make It Possible ticket giveaway. [Insert Graduate joke here]

Just answer: “How do you use plastics to create your favorite foods or memorable parties?” Post a comment about your favorite tools and techniques for using plastic for food preparation, storage, or entertaining for a chance to win two passes to the FOOD & WINE Classic in Aspen, June 18-20 AND $500!

The contest closes at 11:59 p.m. MT on June 3, and the winner will be announced at 5:00 p.m. MT on June 4. Contest rules and restrictions here.

Austin is a Beer Town

Beer Connoisseur Magazine makes its national debut with its Spring Issue Release Party at Independence Brewing Company in Austin! Saturday Feb 27 there’s a pre-party at the Ginger Man from noon-4pm (50 cents off draft beers, $2 off pitchers) with sober shuttle service available to Independence Brewery for the big party, which is from 4-8pm.

Local, craft breweries have been taking Austin by storm, and just this month two more newbies were announced. Could we soon rival some Colorado towns for their microbrews? The founder of the mag seems to think so, a statement made by choosing an Austin brewery to host the national launch.

Taste Independence Brewing Company beer while mingling with magazine staff, listening to live music, enjoying Austin eats, and raise money for the Haiti recovery efforts by joining in raffles.

Deets:

$15 tickets in advance (PURCHASE TICKETS: http://xorbia.com/tickets/beerconnoisseur/)

$20 at door for RSVPs only (RSVP full name to editorial@beerconnoisseur.com)

Entry includes a copy of BC’s Spring Issue 2, Beer Tastings, Brewery Tours, Live Music, Photographer and more. Food available for purchase, Raffle for prizes for Hatian relief

Catalyst 8 Mad Hatter Party – Win tix!

Alice in Wonderland is the cool thing this year (think Tim Burton + Johnny Depp), so Catalyst 8 and Tribeza’s choice of a Mad Hatter Tea Party theme for the first Catalyst 8 event of 2010 is obvious-and obviously fantastic.

Next Wednesday, February 24 from 7:30 – 10:30 pm, Catalyst 8 will take over the regal Allan House for an evening of Mad Hatter spectacle and decadence with signature drinks, lavish cupcakes from Polkadots, and eccentric décor … and check out a Mad Hatter-themed burlesque routine performed by the Southern Sirens.

Tickets for the event are $25 per non-member, free for Catalyst 8 members. Tickets are on sale at www.catalyst-8.com.

Win tickets from this is life in austin! Just post a comment by Monday, February 22 at midnight CST and you’re entered to win a pair of tix to the tea party!

What is Catalyst 8?
An art supporter donor group for the Long Center for the Performing Arts. There are over 100 active Catalyst 8 members and general membership is between the ages of 25 and 40. Members donate $300+ per year to support the organization, local arts and the Long Center. Proceeds from membership and all proceeds from this event go toward the Catalyst 8 Boost Rental Subsidy program, which awards rental subsidies to Austin‐area emergent and underserved arts groups. Boost offsets costs so that a wider diversity of performances and audiences can perform on the Long Center’s world‐class stages. Over the past four years, Catalyst 8 has provided more than $46,000 in rental subsidies via Boost.
