Last night a release party went down for the 9th iteration of the Austin Music Office’s Austin Music CD.  The only compilation of its scale, the disc is designed to increase awareness of and promote the city’s local music scene nationally. It also includes a bonus mini-guide to Austin with maps, club listings, a calendar of major events, and information on unusual places to hear live music.

“Austin Music Volume 9” is available for $11.99 at the Visitors Center and Waterloo Records.

For the first time, fans of local music can purchase a card to download the CD and the mini-guide online: buy a download card or the physical CD at www.austintexas.org.

Lips of an Angel – Grounded in Music Benefit

I am a sucker for Jack Ingram. Not so much the man himself, but the voice … well, maybe just Lips of an Angel, because I like it when Hinder sang it too (although I never understood how they both released it at the same time, and the two don’t sound very different). ANYWAY, the man is performing in Austin with Patty Griffin and Scott Miller this January! I realize the normal person might be more excited by Patty Griffin …

Grounded in Music’s 3rd annual VIP fundraiser at the Paramount Theatre is January 21, 2010. Grounded in Music is a nonprofit that launched in 2007 whose mission is to change the lives of under-privileged children by exposing them to music as a career, hobby, or alternative to life on the streets.  Students are taught a variety of skills in musicianship such as writing lyrics, playing instruments, alongside exploring other areas of the music industry. Proceeds from this fundraiser go to purchasing musical instruments.

The fundraiser will also mark the official launch of the brand new state of the art charitable media and recording studio at the Boys and Girls Club in South Austin. This fully-functional studio is complete with all the latest technology in recording software and will be used to record single artists and full bands. The children can pursue whatever interests them–recording, mixing, mastering, editing–because the studio has it all.

Mentors in the program include well-known artists like Board Member and event headliner Patty Griffin, My Morning Jacket, Vallejo, Broken Teeth, and Jonathan Tyler and the Northern Lights. Ray Wylie Hubbard and Cory Morrow have financially supported the program.

Prior to the event, there will be a VIP cocktail party at 6pm featuring a performance by Porter Davis and a silent auction. Tickets are just $35 and officially go on sale Saturday, December 12 and can be purchased online. If VIP is your style ($100/ticket), email lindsay@groundedinmusic.org.

I Don’t Know Jack About Music

Remember that early ’90s computer game “You Don’t Know Jack About Sports!” where you had to answer trivia or the game yelled at you? And then it spiraled into other “You Don’t Know Jack About ____” bananas, coffee, snowballs. Whatever. I don’t claim to be a music critic, or even afficionado (except when it comes to country–yeehaw!). BUT I do love this little band called Achachay! that’s playing Friday night at 7pm at Momo’s.

Achachay!’s music is pretty sweet: funk rock, they say, with a wildly energetic frontman (who may or may not be related to me) and quietly cool sunglasses-clad drummer. But I enjoy their communicados, via blog and email, almost as much (more?) than their music. Check out achachay.com for their silly, crazy, smart, sassy information.

See you at Momo’s at 7 on Friday!

Speaking of good communicators, I got an email from a band I’ve never heard of that sounds equally zany and fun. It went something like this:

If you do decide to post any of this … we’ll send you a herd of puppies.

We are playing a house show on Sat. Oct 17 with Woodgrain, Butcher and the Bear and FM Campers. Anyone who goes can pick up a free demo with a handmade case, (each one is different!) or we’ll have a bucket of art supplies and you can make your own. Come hang out if you get a chance, we’ll make you a custom cd, maybe share toothpaste, exchange platonic backrubs and perhaps play an exciting game of bingo.
Here’s the flyer:

I may not know Jack about music, but I like creative, fun people and can only assume people with that much creativity can make some sweet music too.

Last Minute: This Afternoon, you don’t wanna miss…

… Concierto Bajo Las Estrellas, 5-10pm tonight at The Long Center for the Performing Arts’ City Terrace

As a sometimes Spanish speaker (as in, I can speak the Spanish but don’t very often), I get excited when I read things in Spanish. Even when they’re as simple as “Concert Under the Stars,” KAKW Univision 62′s celebration of the 5th annual “Premios Texas” awards. The FREE open-to-the-public  pre-party (the Awards are tomorrow night) has a live music lineup of nominated artists including El Guero y Su Banda Centenario (“Mejor Artista Vocal Masculino” – Best Male Vocal Artist), Foco Rojo (“Mejor Banda de Austin” – Best Austin Band) and La Clave de Mexico (“Mejor Banda de Austin”). Also set to perform are Austin-based mariachi band Mariachi Estrella and Mexican regional folk dance group Roy Lozano’s Ballet Folklorico. Making special appearances at the event will be “Premios Texas 2009” co-host Sissi, nominee Makano (“Mejor Artista Hip-hop/Urbano” and “Mejor Artista Revelacion”) and nominee Tati (“Mejor Artista Revelacion”). The final round of the talent show “Idolo del Pueblo” will also take place, with the winning finalist earning a trip to Miami to compete on the international TV show “Sabado Gigante” with Don Francisco.

So walk yourself on down to 701 W. Riverside Drive and enjoy some Latin beats tonight. Snag some nibbles from P. Terry’s or Whole Foods or anywhere else close and make it a picnic. Or just enjoy the tunes.

Austin Music Foundation HEAR AND NOW Fundraiser

“Hi Austin.

This is a strange time for those of us who make music. While anyone can make a record with a laptop and learn to play by watching lessons on YouTube, more than half of American teenagers have never paid for music and cannot be convinced why anyone would.

What will happen next? Will this generation of artists find a way to live and thrive in this chaos? And what will it sound like?

Austin Music Foundation is here to make sure that Austin’s musicians have the tools they need for the business environment of the new century. AMF provides step-by-step instruction to help musicians of every level produce, market, and protect the art they create, which in turn helps make Austin the place we all brag about.

Without AMF, we may hear of another generation of artists cheated of their due, or worse yet hear nothing at all, as young players figure there is no chance for their music to sustain them.

Like music? Invest in it! For the cost of a night out ($50 – $100), you can help AMF help the musicians who play for you. Can you afford more? Civilization is judged by the art that it produces, so make this world what you want it to be – fair, creative, and sounding good.

Thanks Austin, see you at the gig.
Guy Forsyth”

If that didn’t make you want to go to “the gig,” don’t know what will. Austin Music Foundation’s live music showcase and fundraiser “Hear and Now,” features exclusive performances by Davíd Garza and Suzanna Choffel. The evening will include complimentary appetizers and beverages as well as a silent auction offering items from some of Austin’s favorite local businesses. Tickets are available at www.frontgatetickets.com for $35 each, with all proceeds benefiting Austin Music Foundation’s educational programs.

HEAR AND NOW invite

David is playing ACL and has a radius clause which C3 graciously lifted for this event. I believe this will be the only time to see David in Austin before ACL.

Sunday, August 9, 5—7pm, El Sol Y La Luna, 600 East Sixth St.

All the Single Ladies, All the Single Ladies … or Sirens N’ Boots Wednesday Night

Pardon the Beyonce reference, as Sirens N’Boots just sounds smokin’ hot, right, like a burlesque show in cowboy boots, like Southern songstresses ready to kick ass while lookin’ good?

I mean, that’s what I’m like every night.

Anyway, tomorrow night a three-piece all-girl group of singer-songwriters is eschewing their individual reps to form an act called Sirens N’ Boots that hits Antone’s at 9pm Wednesday before criss-crossing the rest of Texas and coming home for a July 21 show at Cactus Café. Combine alt-folksy Aly Tadros with sweet rocker Sarah Peacock and redheaded siren Alyse Black and it’s a recipe for awesome.

Let’s meet the players:

ALY TADROS: Classical guitarist. Tom Waits meets Ani DiFranco meets Fiona Apple plus a flamenco guitar. Debut album, Things Worth Keeping, recorded and produced by Duane Lundy (Ben Sollee, These United States, Vandaveer), set for release August 22, 2009.

SARAH PEACOCK: Pop rocker. Janis Joplin meets Alanis Morissette in a charming pop-powerhouse package. Debut album, Straight For Your Heart, on Maze Records in Nashville, TN.

ALYSE BLACK: Don’t-pigeonhole-her-jazz singer. Bjork meets Billie Holiday meets Tori Amos meets Portishead. Sophomore album, For You, recorded and produced by Ryan Peacock (Foo Fighters, Ra Ra Riot, Blonde Redhead, The Gossip), due out October 1st, 2009. Debut album, Too Much & Too Lovely, won 1st place in Billboard’s Annual World Song Contest in Jazz.

… and then, let’s go to Antone’s tomorrow night at 9m to REALLY meet the players. Here for their myspace page. I can’t believe I just referenced myspace.

Fastball + Black and White Years in the park

The last of the Solar-Powered Concert Series in Republic Square Park is tomorrow night, and the TBA closer is Fastball–yep, middle school/high school hotties Fastball, of You’re an Ocean, Out of My Head, and other gems, will be playing. With the Black & White Years, an Austin-based band that has tons of local acumen and rabid fans. So it’s probably going to be awesome weather (if you like the heat) for an awesome show.

Stop by the Farmer’s Market at the Triangle and pick up food, or do a Whole Foods run and bring a picnic to the park at 4th & Guadalupe. Gates (?!) open at 5 pm, music runs 5:30–10pm.

Solar Powered Concerts mean audiences experience “pollution free” music. In other words – no stage hum. Solar powered production is not only the better for the environment but also provides a sonically clean sound. The concerts benefit Blue Dog Rescue, an Austin area foster organization dedicated to rescuing dogs from our local shelters and adopting them into new homes. Blue Dog Rescue and their four legged friends will be on site.

Bicycle “Valet Parking” is provided by Mellow Johnny’s bike shop. Scooter and motorcycle parking will be provided on 5th Street by Wood’s Fun Center. For those of you who can’t walk or bike, please try to be pollution-free by checking out Capitol Metro, including the popular Dillos which service downtown, at www.capitolmetro.com.

Parking is available all day at the Laz Parking Lots located on 4th & Nueces and 5th & Rio Grande. Parking is available at the State of Texas Garage located at 4th & San Antonio after 5 pm.

Coming soon to This is Life in Austin: a free summer concert/film series calendar–keep an eye out.

Shameless Promotions: Achachay! and Language Room (not together)

In a post of shameless promotions for people we love, let me tell you about my brother’s band’s new CD. It’s effing amazing.

I’ll let him tell you about it:

We’ve put our best efforts into an amazing five song EP entitled “A Preachy Catfish” and we want you to know that it is available for purchase online RIGHT NOW, on http://www.achachay.com. Please check it out, buy it, and get others to buy. Be the first to own the recording inception of future musical legends (us of course). We put a lot of love into this and we want to share it with as many people as possible for two reasons:

(1) We believe our music makes your life better.
(2) The CD is very good.

We need you guys to spread the music grassroots in every way you can. Blog about it, put it in your status and away message, twitter it, pass it around, talk about it at bars. Our goal is to sell over 1000 copies of A Preachy Catfish online, in a month. Help us. Tell us and tell the world what makes it good and what can be improved, what you wish was recorded and what pieces you love. We’re listening. We want this to be communication not just propagation. It’s a great balance of silly and serious, plus all are dance-inciting grooves. Feel free to burn it, and encourage those who get the CD free to donate via the PayPal link on our site.

A huge thanks to everyone who has supported us on the tour thus far – by coming out to shows, putting us up for a night, and just reading and commenting about it on our website. We can’t do it without you.

And then, a dear reader wrote in to tell me about her boyfriend’s band, who actually sound pretty freakin’ good. They’re playing this Thursday night at The Parish at 10, so it’s definitely worth checking out. Plus, though she’s a little biased, she swears they’re major hotties…

Reader says: “Language Room [is] local guys with a great sound, kind of a mix of Radiohead-Kings of Leon-Muse. Very alternative, sing-along-to rock. The show’s June 11th @ 10pm, and it’s gonna be a good one, with visuals to go along with their rocking sound.

Check out some of their songs off their just released album “One by One” on their myspace: myspace.com/languageroom
(“I Still Need You” being my personal fave)

Or other info on their main site: languageroom.net

Take a second to hear them out, it’ll convince you to hit up the show!

And that, my friends, is some shameless promotion for people we love.
