ACL: Austin City Limits Fest Guide

You absolutely cannot miss:

Four Seasons Austin ACL Pre-Show

Looking across the river towards the Back Lawn, where you will enjoy fabulous music and delicious tacos…

KUT 90.5 and Four Seasons Hotel Austin invite locals and festival visitors to experience a more intimate side of Austin City Limits with a pre-show broadcast from the hotel’s gorgeous Back Lawn. Check out 30 to 40-minute sets by awesome ACL fest artists:

9am: Sahara Smith
10am: Blind Pilot (coincidentally played Aspen’s Belly Up this past Sunday night)
11am: Spoon
Noon: Robert Randolph and the Family Band

The event is open to the public on a first-come, first served basis. Admission is JUST $5, which includes a breakfast taco! All proceeds benefit the Shivers Cancer Center at Seton Hospital. Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite chair or blanket to relax … Friday, October 8 from 9am-1pm on the Back Lawn of Four Seasons Hotel Austin (98 San Jacinto Blvd.)

RUMOR: Saturday, Oct. 9 – ACL afterparty with The xx @ Malverde (400 W. 2nd St. Austin, TX) – RSVP info TBA.

My ACL survival guide (updated from ’08):

- What to wear to ACL? Light-colored clothing, with a swimsuit. Girls, you’re inevitably taking your shirt off to hide the sweat running down it, guys, you’re inevitably taking your shirt off because it’s hot as hell. Yes, I hear we will have 80-degree temps. Doesn’t matter, the sun will still be blazing and you will still be hot. It’s Texas. Or it might rain (see woodstock ’09 aka last year). You’ll still be glad you’re wearing a swimsuit.

- Drink lots of water. Yeah, the portapotties suck. But being dehydrated sucks more. Drinking booze is tempting, and sneaking it in is easy, but hydrate first. Drink later in the afternoon, you’ll thank yourself for it later. And you’ll remember at least half the bands you saw.

- Sunscreen. Don’t get cancer, and don’t be miserable for the following two days. Don’t get sunburned, it will make you a thousand times hotter, which is not a place you want to be. Wear some freakin’ sunscreen. Even if it’s cold. SPF 30 please.

- Big, floppy hats / umbrellas / sunglasses / chairs with built in umbrellas / your program / whatever, use it to cool it down.

- Take breaks/naps. Barton Springs, restaurants with a/c, under trees, or under someone else’s chair, as long as you take a respite, it doesn’t matter where.

- Don’t try to drive and park. It never works. A bajillion and a half cabbies and pedicabs are circulating, buses and shuttles are all over the place (free from Republic Square!), or have friends/parents/bums drop you off. The other side (west) of the Mopac bridge is a great place to be dropped off and avoid the crazy Barton Springs Road traffic.

From my commentors:

Sarah: Check out the autograph schedule to get up close and personal with your fav artists: http://www.aclfestival.com/experience/activities/autograph-schedule/

Andrew: Make sure to check out the black keys on Friday 4-5, got to see them in 2008 and it was an unbelievable set.

Edward A. Cross III: Ride a bike to avoid horrible traffic for cars and buses!

Amy: Run across the street to Barton Springs Pool in between your favorite acts for a chance to cool off!

Mitch: Be sure to factor in rest time! After 3-4 hours of seeing shows, you’ll need a couple minutes off your feet to catch your breath.

Have fun, see Phish!

Austin: Free Yoga at the Four Seasons!

How cool is the Four Seasons? Not only is it a total celeb hotspot (most recent sighting? Jessica Simpson and her cutie ex-NFL boyfriend), but they’ve been doing things just for us locals like Dive-In Movies, TRIO Happy Hour, Austin Restaurant Week, and now this! Allow me to introduce Yoga on the Lawn.

The Spa at Four Seasons is inviting local and visiting yogis to strike a pose in one of the most scenic spots in Austin – overlooking Lady Bird Lake. Held on the verdant back lawn of Four Seasons Hotel Austin, Yoga on the Lawn kicks off tomorrow, Oct 2, at 10am with an hour-long session led by registered yoga teacher Angie Knight to the relaxing sound of acoustic guitar music. Offered quarterly, all Yoga on the Lawn events will be free but the Hotel is encouraging October 2010 participants to make a donation to the Seton Shivers Cancer Center to support its month-long fundraising efforts.

In addition, all guests who make a minimum $20 donation will receive a Four Seasons Hotel Austin pool pass valid Monday through Friday until Oct 31, 2010. Due to limited space, reservations are required and may be made by calling 512-685-8160.

Facebook page event invitation. Not that there’s an absence of free yoga in this town (hello lululemon every Saturday morning), but I have to imagine this is going to be one of the best … I mean, could the location BE any more awesome? See you there, yogis!

Austin: Why does it feel like the master toilet is heated?

I wish United Inspections, www.UnitedInspectionsTexas.com, had been around when my brother and I bought our house! Started by a very close friend of mine, the company is beyond thorough and highly professional. The inspector did our house as a practice run and was able to explain one of the house’s greatest mysteries: why does it feel like the master toilet is heated?

A: because the person who initially did the plumbing switched the hot and cold lines to the toilet, meaning it constantly pumps hot water! The more you flush it (during a party, for instance), the hotter the seat and w.c. gets.

A good home inspector is one of those services the average person doesn’t use all that often, but it’s crucial that you have a good one so you don’t end up buying a house with problems. So if you are in the market for a home or are ready for an inspection, let me suggest United Inspections.

PLUS, there is a summer months 35% discount!!

Aspen: Cathedral Lake Hike

It’s an “easy” day hike, starting near Ashcroft and only about 2.8 miles to Cathedral Lake. You climb almost 2,000 vertical feet, though, so it’s not for flatlanders or those unadjusted to altitude. I haven’t had a hard time adjusting to much about the altitude, but this hike kicked my ass!

It’s a National Forest, so dogs have to be on leash the whole time. Nali carried her food and water bowl:

Reward for the grueling hike:

Yes, please. Then, camping!

Fire + bison hot dogs!

So Nali didn’t run away and get eaten by a mountain lion:

Hiking out the next morning too early:

Gorgeous!

Getting down was quick. If you’re looking for a hike in Aspen, it’s definitely a gorgeous one, and you get to go through Aspen forests, up some rocky mountainside, over some switchbacks, and to the lake. I’d bring hiking poles, I know I need to invest in some. And next time we want to get to Electric Pass–just past Cathedral Lake but up to 13,600 feet!!

Free Mid-Week CrossFit Workout!

I know, I know, I’m always posting about free CrossFit workouts (hello, they happen at least once a month), but this one is special because it’s on a Wednesday at 9:30am. Totally random–or targeting those of us who refuse to get out of bed for 8:30am Saturday workouts–but totally awesome. Get to work early and cut out for a quick “doctor’s appointment” (more like “avoid the doctor appointment” because you’re taking care of your health and wellness by working on your fitness) under the Mopac bridge at Town Lake.

If nothing else, let me assure you that the Relentless coaches are all relentlessly hot, so there’ll be motivation…

PS – whether you worked out or not, stop by any Amy’s Ice Cream today from 2-6pm for a free scoop! Happy 25th birthday, Amy’s!

Food Coma at Roaring Fork North

Oh. My. Stars. Or some equally astounded proclamation. I ate more food last night at Roaring Fork North than any human should ever eat in one sitting. Going into it, I thought, ah, I’m doing the Spartan 300 Challenge, doing a good job of watching what I eat, I’ll just nibble on some stuff …

Wrong, I was. 4 appetizers, 3 salads, 4 entrees, 2 sides, and 4 desserts later …

I started with a skinny margarita–made with lime juice, agave nectar, and tequila. Delish and low-cal! Then they brought out the cutest Margarita Boat in the entire world: Margarita boatThose are tall shot glasses filled with margarita!! Probably not low-cal. But (from L-R) frozen huckleberry, original, and passion fruit are worth the calorie splurge. You can taste the tequila, but it’s not overpowering, and the ‘ritas aren’t sickly sweet either. Could be one of the better margaritas in Austin … at a Roaring Fork? Oh, but that’s not the only confusing thing: they may well have the best guacamole in all of Austin. The verdict is out for me, but Josh of Maggie’s Austin declared resolutely his undying love for this fresh avocado, cilantro, garlic, tomato smash.

The other appetizers were equally divine: the green chile pork served in its own mini cast iron pot? Fantastic. My girl-date wants it for hungover brunch (they serve it 11-4 on the weekends). It comes with tortillas, but there’s no need for that. Similarly, the smoked salmon is appropriately salty but not overwhelming, and its dill Crème fraîche is delicious atop the fish even without the grilled flatbread. The fourth appetizer–yep, we’re only on apps–was a shrimp cocktail that was far too sweet for me.

Then they brought out salads. The salad course wasn’t even on our sampler menu! But when a delicious ceaser, spring mix with pecans and goat cheese, and wedge salad arrive on your table, you don’t complain. You take a deep breath and green it up. Before the entrees start rolling in, because when the shrimp & grits, bacon-wrapped pork tenderloin, mahi-mahi tacos, and Dr. Pepper baby-back ribs arrive, salads are long gone from the mind.

The shrimp & grits was far and away the crowd favorite. The bacon-wrapped pork was decadent, tasty in an almost forbidden way. The mahi-mahi tacos were not a huge hit, and I’m not a rib-eater so I can’t speak to the ribs. The green chile mac & cheese was really good (Perla’s might still be better, though this has the spice…), the garlic spinach tasted like garlic spinach (I’m a fan), and the french fries tasted to me like the double-fried kind, you know, where you bite in and you get like an outer layer of crunch and then a second-crunch, and then the squishy inside? Anyway, my girl-date loved them.

And then, could you even imagine there being any room in my belly for dessert? Well, when they brought out a peanut butter chocolate lava brownie with butter pecan Amy’s ice cream, room was made in my belly–by my eyes. I crammed so much pbchoclava in my mouth I don’t think anyone else had a chance at it. Oh, you brought out a chocolate martini and some concoction called a Mexican killer or flu-killer or something-I-can’t-remember? OBVIOUSLY wasn’t paying attention, because heaven was happening in my mouth.

They had some other desserts too-a beloved creme brulee, a pineapple upside cake, and peanut butter chocolate crunch bars. Yeah, whatever, RF, I’m busy. I’m licking the plate. There were drink flights too, but for once this floozy was too focused on food to even think about drinks. Fresh grapefruit juice? That’s wonderful, dude, but I’m busy.

As you can probably gather, I’d recommend Roaring Fork to anyone. The north location is really quite the destination–the entire restaurant grabs the lake views as much as possible, and it feels on the patio like you really are on a lake–not just an accidental lake made by us digging up dirt (rumor has it the dirt trucks are still underneath the water). And since it’s just off the freeway, it’s convenient for northerners and southies alike.

Freakin’ Full Weekend

First and foremost,

the weekend has already been entirely usurped by the joy that is the Texas Hill Country Wine + Food Festival. I heard Thursday night’s Culinary Masters dinner was exquisite, and tonight’s Stars Across Texas Grand Tasting promises to be the glitziest of the events, held at the Long Center. Among Saturday’s full schedule of events, the marquee is a Rare and Fine Wine Auction at the Four Seasons, and Sunday’s main attraction is the Sunday Fair–a tasting and sampling extravaganza out at the Salt Lick, where chefs get to relax and roll up their sleeves as they interact with fair-goers. A lot of the events are already sold out, but a few tickets remain–check the website for details.

If wine and food isn’t your thing (who are you?!), shopping might hit the spot:

  • The Lone Star Ladies host a crafty shopping event downtown complete with cupcakes, massages, facials, and goody bags. Just $8 to shop and pamper yourself!
  • The C3 Outfitters host their April Event Saturday & Sunday
Everything* is just $10 bucks–except one $12.50 item. Jeans, tees, hoodies and more are just ten bucks. $5 off for people who follow them on Twitter.  Crockett Center, 10601 N. Lamar Blvd., Austin, TX 78753 (across from Chuy’s)

Or, how about some outdoor music?

  • Do512 Spring BBQ: Saturday from 5-9pm @ Do512 HQ (S Lamar) for beer-braised brisket tacos, burgers and dogs (including veggie burgers), other tasty treats, and vodka-soaked watermelon! Drinks provided by Lone Star Beer, Sweet Leaf Tea and Savvy Vodka. Music by DJ Thibault. RSVP Required
$10 Suggested Donation will benefit Groundwork Music Project, providing free music lessons to Austin children who could not otherwise afford them.
  • The 12th annual Austin Reggae Festival: 2 days of music, food, arts & crafts and fun at Auditorium Shores, celebrating Bob Marley and supporting the Capital Area Food Bank, an organization that brings food to thousands of Central Texas families each year.

Love Mama Earth?

  • I almost forgot that Saturday is Earth Day, but fret not–I remembered in time to post this link: austinearthday.com and to remind you to head downtown tomorrow morning, rain or shine, for a stellar Earth Day celebration. If you hit the Farmer’s Market, I hear Milagro Eggs are the only way to go.

Me?

I’ll be attending a rainy day FREE CrossFit Workout Under The Bridge (UTB) at 8:30am, hopefully playing some MUD FOOTBALL (with any luck!), hitting the new Roaring Fork at the Arboretum’s soft opening, doing Sunday Fair at the Salt Lick, and practicing with Blondes v Brunettes (again, could be Mud Football). Whew! Maybe I can squeeze some shopping in too …

Top Ten Things to do in Austin

If you’ve only got a weekend (or a friend in town you want to show a good time), here are my picks, from Friday night through Sunday afternoon:

Of course I love a million other things about Austin, but these are my standards: the go-to places and things to do that locals and out-of-towners alike love.

1) Dinner at TRIO ($$$), Olivia ($$) or Guero’s ($)
2) Downtown – Walk dirty 6th for the experience (and maybe a Lat30 jaeger bomb), but party at 5th & Congress–start at Lanai and work your way down to end the night at Marq
3) Run/walk Town, er, Lady Bird Lake
5) Patio lunch at Hula Hut (free range chicken!) or Shady Grove
6) Take a boat out on Lake Austin
7) Dinner & a movie at Alamo Drafthouse (Guinness milkshake!!!)
8 ) Sunday brunch at Moonshine
9) Shopping on South Congress, coffee at Jo’s (celeb-spotting?)
10) A cupcake a Sugar Mama’s

I also posed the question on twitter, and here are the

Top Ten vote-getters for the one restaurant you’d take a friend to in Austin:

1) Shady Grove
2) Moonshine
3) Salt Lick
4) Daily Juice
5) Guero’s / Polvos
6) Oasis
7) Torchy’s/ El Chile
8 ) Blue Dahlia
9) Swad (note: closed on Tuesdays. Tried to go last night.)
10) Uchi
