Austin: Half-Price Sushi at Bar Chi

As the weekend rolls around again, I absolutely must tell you about Bar Chi. It’s on 2nd & Colorado, where the old Yu Sushi Izagaya was. It looks the exact same, but they are doing something no one else downtown is:

Late. Night. Happy Hour. 10p-midnight.

And all-day Sunday happy hour.

And not just $1 off. Like half-price. Here’s the menu:

happy hour menu at Bar Chi Austin

Yes, that’s pieces of sashimi/nigiri for $1.50 each. And rolls for $4.

I cannot recommend highly enough their “very white tuna” sushi. A piece of escolar seasoned with lemon and a hint of spice, it’s as good a piece of fish as you’ll find anywhere in this town.

The rest of the sushi was good but not spectacular. What was, however, spectacular, was their willingness to accomodate our special requests. No rice? Brown rice? Cucumber roll? All are no problemo!

We ordered the one cucumber-wrapped roll on the menu (not on the happy hour special but only $10) and just plain didn’t like it. Could have been bad fish or taste buds or whatever, but the waitress took it off our bill and had the chefs make us a special roll with three kinds of fish wrapped in cucumber. It was fresh and delicious! We’re calling it Leo’s Special, for the sushi chef who made it. It’s here:

As you can see, it’s awesome. And 100% healthy and paleo, if you care about those sorts of things.

Something should also be said about their sake-infused bloody mary. At $1.50 you can’t go wrong, but the sake is infused with jalapenos, serranos, and habaneros, which makes it SO RIGHT. Yum.

Bottom line? For cheap sushi that’s way better than Whole Foods but admittedly not as good as Uchi, Bar Chi is the spot.

Things to Do Thursday

As usual, happy hours abound! Come see me judging delicious Grey Goose cocktails at SIX Lounge from 7:30-10:30, hit up that vegan cart opening at 6th & Waller form 6-10pm, or stop by Union Park from 5:30-7:30 to celebrate the success of the 2009 Austin Under 40 Awards, from which the Young Women’s Alliance Foundation will donate $17,500 to the Austin YMBL Sunshine Camps. The $17,500 donation from the YWA Foundation will allow 70 at-risk children to attend the Sunshine Camps free of charge this summer.

Other notables: Black Sheep Lodge (S. Lamar) is STILL sans liquor license, so they’re STILL giving free beer or margaritas with any purchase. Good deal. Aforementioned June bride who is turning 25 today will be celebrating tonight at Midnight Rodeo, the country dancehall that plays occasional rap and is affectionately known as Rope-a-ho by those in the know; their drink specials are pretty special: $1 wells, $1.75 Longnecks, and $3.50 “Almost Anything Else.” There’s a cover for men 21+ of $5 but ladies are free! Gotta love country dancehall sexism.

Max’s Wine Dive Opens Today!

Buffalo sliders. Champagne. Free-range happy local fried chicken. Fresh-baked fancy bread. (Relatively) Cheap wine. Relaxed atmosphere. Fried oysters. Exposed brick. Shrimp ‘n’ grits. Friendliest servers ever. What’s not to love?

Max's Buffalo Burger

Buffalo slider with homemade pickle and bread from Walton's (to open May 15)

Welcome to Max’s Wine Dive, the newest restaurant to hit 3rd & San Jacinto, that burgeoning corner where Rio Grande and Melting Pot have managed to carve out an existence earlier relegated to a-year-and-out eating establishments. Max’s Wine Dive is a Houston hotspot that’s made its way westward into Austin. This “dive” (laid-back atmosphere) focuses on upscale comfort food and carries more than 180 kinds of wine–the only list where you can buy a glass of anything. You can also buy the whole thing and take it home–Max’s maintains a retailer’s permit too. Score!

Max’s Wine Dive is the brainchild of owners Jerry and Laura Lasco, with fellow Rice grad Jonathan in the mix. Endearing Executive Chef Steve Super is passionate about the food, but fittingly his first love was music. A 20-year veteran of the Nashville scene, he toured with national act as well known as Brooks & Dunn.  Just 5 years out of the New England Culinary Institute and a stint at the helm of wildly popular Steve and Erika’s (Vermont’s highest-rated restaurant in 2007) later, Steve is settling happily into life in the live music capitol.

Crazy Menu picks:

Nacho Mama’s Oysters (crispy, fried Gulf Coast oysters served over fried wontons and topped with habañero salsa and cilantro $8), Max & Cheese (tossed in truffle cream and a fresh mozzarella, gruyere and Grana Padano cheese blend, $11), Yama Kobe Beef Burger (topped with a triple-cream brie and freshly pickled jalapenos, $18), organic Southern Fried Chicken ($18), and the slightly/alot ridiculous “Haute” Dog (with Texas beer sauerkraut and venison chili, $14).  The dishes “always start with fresh, seasonal, and locally-sourced ingredients.”

Happy hour starts at 4pm, but Max’s also has the badass Reverse Happy Hour with discounted food and wine during the last two hours of business!

www.MaxsWineDive.com, 207 San Jacinto Blvd. Open Monday through Wednesday 4-midnight; Thursday through Saturday 4pm-2am, and Sunday from 11am-midnight, with Sunday brunch from 11am-3pm (for drool-worthy photos, check out this blog).

Drink for [a] Cause(s)

It seems like there are opportunities to support local charities in just about everything you do. While I don’t normally highlight events until a day or two before, I’ve got to get this on your calendar because it’s a cause near and dear to me (that, and I’m the Brunette QB, and we need to win the game and the fundraising challenge):

Brunette Happy Hour!

My fave bar, Lanai, is opening early just for us to run around in our uniforms passing out your drinks and collecting your tips for the Alzheimer’s Association. We’re gonna have some sweet drink specials, sweet treats, sick DJ beats–hey-o Johnny Bravvo!–and lots of fun. 6-8pm, Saturday May 9th at Lanai.

WHILE you’re drinking for the cause, here’s another example of boozin’ for local charities:

From May 4-8, Rio Grande Mexcian Restaurant on San Jacinto is giving 10% of bar sales (that’s a lot of money) to five selected charities, one each night. The sched:

Monday, May 4: A Legacy of Giving, 5-7:30pm
Tuesday, May 5: Austin Sunshine Camps, 5-7:30pm
Wednesday, May 6: Lance Armstrong Foundation, 5-7:30pm
Thursday, May 7: The Austin Theatre Alliance, 5-7:30pm
Friday, May 8: Red Cross of Central Texas, 5-7:30pm

Now’s the time to get your margarita on, people, and then keep the fun going through the weekend with a “Brunettes Do it Better” drink at BvB Happy Hour!

It’s a smidge gloomy outside, but we’re hoping it’ll clear up by happy hour. TRIO? Belmont? Little Woodrow’s? 219 West? Can’t decide.

If free booze is your thing, though, you won’t want to miss Austin Monthly’s May issue party at the Russell Collection Fine Art Gallery on West 6th. Be the first to see the Peter Max collection (May’s cover artist) as it arrives in Austin. Complimentary Cosmos, Lemon Drops, and wine as well as food by NoRTH: Modern Italian Cuisine (mmmm). 6-8pm.

Guest Post: TRIO Happy Hour

Downtown Austin’s Trendy New Happy Hour
Review by William Jackson & Sandra Rascon

If you haven’t experienced a Happy Hour at TRIO at Four Seasons, you haven’t truly experienced Happy Hour in downtown Austin.

Austin’s newest place to be “scene” is nestled in the welcoming arms of the Four Seasons, located on the green banks of Lady Bird Lake, smack dab in the middle of the business and world-famous entertainment districts.  When you descend the grand staircase and round the corner, you can feel the excitement as you prepare to embark on what is sure to be a memorable journey of culinary and visual delights and lively conversations.  Is there a bad seat in the house?  We think not.  There’s the inviting outdoor patio overlooking the serene Lake, the spacious main dining room where views of nature peak through the stately windows, or the hip Wine Bar reminiscent of a trendy bar in Miami Beach — TRIO is the perfect setting to network, host a successful business event, or simply decompress.

Prepare to experience TRIO’s charming service, which seems like a perfectly executed theatrical production: attendants swirling in and stealing away almost invisibly, set into motion by nothing more than the subtle movement of your eyes, or the menu, signaling it’s time to let the show begin.  The management is as comfortable as family and has a knack for ensuring the enjoyment of each guest without compromising individuality. Be prepared for a brief, delightful, and engaging conversation that is never intrusive.

Prepare to experience food impressive in its precision.  Wonderful delicacies booming with flavor.  Chef de Cuisine Todd Duplechan has filled the menu with a tantalizing selection sure to delight even the most discriminating palate.  Not to mention menu items can be enjoyed at half-price, an enticing invitation to taste every selection at least once.

Unforgettable are the Mussels drenched in a rich broth of Roquefort, Prosciutto and Riesling – you will ask for a spoon or bread.  Even Truffle Fries rise to the occasion with Rosemary, Garlic and Meyer Lemon Aioli.  Certainly, the little-known three-day marinating process involving sugar is key to this simple yet amazing gourmet delight!  Lamb Sliders are not far behind, these tantalizing mini gourmet burgers are made with local lamb, tzatziki and cumin.

If you have the pleasure of meeting Chef Todd, inquire about the Pecan-Fed Pig, a spicy dish he introduced to us that is not on the Happy Hour menu but SHOULD BE!

If you prefer a cocktail, you won’t get any dirty looks or get your hand slapped, the accommodating bar staff is more than thrilled to make your request.  But, be advised, TRIO is known for its impressive wine selection with over 300 unique selections with 60 served by the glass.  Especially delightful are the Happy Hour selections, which are specifically selected to complement the food.  No surprise here, as the wine is personally selected by award-winning Sommelier, Mark Sayre who received the title of Austin’s Best Sommelier for 2007 from The Wine & Food Foundation of Texas and The Texas Sommelier Association. Mark says, “Baked Gulf Oysters and a glass or two of the Riesling, Schloss Vollrads, Germany, 2007–there’s nothing better.”

If Red is your choice, the secret is out about Cabernet Amavi Cellars, a Washington 2006!  It stands alone as a medium bold that leaves the palate refreshed.  Truly, it is one of the few red wines that can be enjoyed without an edible complement and is a discovery worth making.  If champagne is desired, enjoy a glass of Louis Roederer – well known in France for gracing weddings and special occasions.

The hallmark wine experience at TRIO is that your glass is always filled from a bottle at your table, in front of you.  You’ll feel as if you’re at an exclusive wine tasting event as even the table settings are smartly designed and arranged to mimic those set at an actual wine tasting.

With four star service, elegant cuisine, expansive drink selections, trendy guests, local pundits and complimentary valet for all TRIO Happy Hour clientele, this upscale Wine Bar is everything it should be — allowing you to enjoy life as it’s meant to be.  You can’t help but become a regular.

After all, aren’t you supposed to be Happy and much more enlightened, when you leave Happy Hour?

Happy Hour at TRIO is Monday through Saturday, 5pm to 8pm, 98 San Jacinto Boulevard, Austin, 78701. For additional information, call (512) 685-8300.
