A sprouted grain crust pizza!

Whaaaa? In a quick stop at Whole Foods last night I stumbled upon A.C. LaRocco’s Ultra Thin Crust Pizza Sprouted Grain with Old World Veggies. I told my G about it, and he insisted I post pics so he could know what I was talking about. Behold:

Pizza

Sprouted grains are much better for you, higher in protein and lower in carbs, plus this WHOLE PIZZA only has 14 grams of fat and 340 calories, with 20 grams of protein! There’s no meat on this baby, so that protein is from the part-skim mozzarella and the crust.

I ate 2/3 of the pizza and was very full, so on sale for $5.39, this is definitely budget-friendly for a dinner and subsequent lunch! YUM!

Tuesday: Fun, Sexy, Strappy

It’s almost like the commercials for My Bloody Valentine (The Perfect date movie: fun, sex, terror), minus any terror. Collectic Home is hosting an art unveiling tomorrow night, so check it out if you’re into that sort of thing (details after I marvel over Aces Lounge’s new offerings below) …

So who knew Aces Lounge is into country?! The burlesque bar best known for the Southern Sirens and their curtain tricks (you have to see it) are introducing an all-star Texas Tuesday lineup with 75 cent LoneStar tallboys. Cory Morrow opens it up by playing Aces tomorrow night at 7pm. The rest of February includes Mark McKinney, Ryan James, and Austin Collins. All three are famous Texan singer-songrwriters, and I’ve met & written articles about two of ‘em. :-) New Tuesday night fun!

Thursday is back to being Thursday

Last week, Wednesday was the new Thursday: jam-packed with events. This week, Thursday is back and bigger and better than ever … must be the holiday season! I’m torn! Which to go to?!

Magazine Issue Launch: Austin Monthly

Austin Monthly is launching their December COOL issue and the winter issue of Austin Monthly Home at a super eco-friendly home in Rollingwood. The party features a glimpse into an incredibly-designed home, as well as free food and drinks, per usual. I’m personally partial because I wrote an article for Austin Monthly Home this issue, but Rollingwood IS pretty far from me …

Carnival ‘O’ Pizza at Home Slice

I’m going to get my hair cut & colored (ack! my first time!) at Pink Salon Saturday morning, so it’s perfectly convenient that Home Slice is having their fall carnival right across the street!

Home Slice Carnival O Pizza
Noon – 7pm

The 3rd annual Carnival O Pizza hosted by Home Slice is this Saturday! A funky midway featuring games of skill, breakdancers, graffiti artists, airbrushed custom tees by Von Franco, and a Photobooth by Annie Ra is the highlight, but contests galore come later in the day.

Box folding contests, pizza tossing contests, pizza eating contests and a bunch of raffles–a scooter from Urban Moto, a free night at the San Jose, and a free theater rental from Alamo–round out the festivities. It all benefits Keep Austin Beautiful.

Settlement Home Garage Sale

Tonight we went to the preview party of the Settlement Home Garage Sale. My parents have been going for something ridiculous like 18 years, my brother and I have been going for at least six. This year, we brought friends and everyone scored some awesome deals.

The bro and I bought five dining room chairs that sort of mismatch, and they look awesome!

I bought some sweet gold costume jewelry, a sick glittery 70s-style dress for a 70s party coming up, and a beautiful vintage purple wool dress with gold buttons. Sweet haul if I do say so myself!

The garage sale runs through Sunday at the Palmer Events Center. Entry is just $5 and all proceeds from the sale go to run the Settlement Home’s great programs throughout the year. Go score some cheap stuff!

RUMOR MILL: 12 Gage

I normally just post rumors on the sidebar over there, but this one is too juicy to relegate to the sidelines: Paul Petersen, legendary chef at The Gage Hotel in Marathon (full disclosure: I covered him in a 2007 article in Texas Home & Living) is rumored to be opening a restaurant in Austin called 12 Gage.

No one knows much more than that, though someone found a “9 months out” timeline dating back to September … which would put us at around 7 months out, which is actually more like 9 months in builder-speak. Some might remember Petersen’s Little Texas Bistro, an apparently charming and uber-popular spot in Buda that he closed to move to Alpine in order to take the Gage job in Marathon.

I can’t vouch for his food personally, but the man is passionate, creative, and very friendly, which is a good start. And everyone else raves about his food, so it’s gotta be good, right?

A little something extra: The line of salsas Peterson/The Gage debuted last year around this time is now for sale at local Central Markets. Three varieties of chunky, vegetable-based hot salsas will be available, including a “Ragin’ Serrano Rojo” and a “Venom Verde.” Petersen says, “I’ve used pretty simple ingredients like tomatoes, onions, garlic and peppers to come up with some really insanely good recipes.”

Look for the tattoo/hot-rod, Texas-inspired glass jars at Central Market.

Huge Weekend

I’m exhausting just thinking about this weekend, and it hasn’t even started yet! Apparently Austin does Labor Day big.

The highlight: Sunday night’s Nike Human Race.

6:30pm, a million people across the world will be running a 10K. In Austin, our course is a tough one–lots of hills–but pretty, through downtown, campus, the capitol area. And the last mile or so is downhill! Hooray! Afterwards, Ben Harper plays. They’re still looking for volunteers, so head to the website if you’re interested in being part of a huge global event!

Also on Sunday: The most ridiculous country music lineup to hit Austin in years plays in Waterloo Park, yes, super-close to the Ben Harper show at the Capitol. Party in the Park is an absolutely jam-packed $32.50 ticket: Pat Green headlines, with Cory Morrow, Jack Ingram, Ryan James, Brandon Rhyder, and Rich O’Toole. The least famous of the six is a major up-and-comer in the Texas country scene. I’m telling you, it’s worth sitting outside the gates in your sweaty Nike gear to hear these guys!

There’s also Bat Fest on South First, and south of the river they’ll be staging for the Austin Tri Monday morning … Austin is so busy!

On Saturday, UT obviously has its home opener. Everyone I know will be tailgating, making it into the game is secondary. For non-fans, Bicycle Sport Shop hosts a Margarita Ride:

Bicycle Sport Shop/Rio Grande Restaurant Margarita Ride

Meet at the Pfluger Bridge at 6:15pm and ride with us to Happy Hour at the Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant.

Happy Hour: 6:45 til 8pm

Free appetizers

$2 Drafts – $5 Margaritas

First 50 riders at the bridge get a free drink ticket.

GO BY BIKE!

And then there’s Monday. Free Day of Yoga. You’ll probably need it if your weekend shapes up to be anything like mine … party Friday, volleyball and tailgating Saturday, volleyball and running Sunday … stretch me out! I haven’t heard of a yoga studio in Austin that ISN’T doing it, but there’s a schedule on the website if you want to make sure you can find your fave. I recommend checking out Bikram at Davenport or YogaGroove!

Ultimate Frisbee

My brother says that I need to post on more topics, like ultimate frisbee. While his point is that he’d like to see a wider range of coverage, I’m not sure that’s what this is about. Since I’m not an ultimate frisbee afficionado, I don’t KNOW about ultimate frisbee in Austin. I’d happily play, but I’m not going to go searching for a game. I’d rather be playing football, volleyball, or basketball. My brother, on the other hand, loves to play ultimate frisbee and will organize games with his friends whenever he can.

Nevertheless, I did find out about ultimate frisbee. Apparently, there are pick-up games at Zilker every Monday and Friday night, starting around 6pm. I obviously have never been, so I can’t vouch for it, but there you go if you feel like playing some Ultimate.

Also, fencing is another thing I know nothing about. Not just the sport of fencing, but the act of building a fence. Again nevertheless, I found out about that as well. My dad and I, aided at various times by friends, built a fence. And we have Home Depot to thank for that, with their 8-foot panels of French Gothic Spaced Pickets. All we had to do was set some posts in concrete and screw the fences on! (I’m being a little sarcastic, it’s harder than it sounds, but overall not too difficult in the scheme of things) But now everytime I look at my fence, I feel a little bit proud. My point is, in the theme of doing things you don’t normally do, maybe you can hit the Home Depot and build something yourself too!

Coworking– it’s all the rage

I know not everyone out there freelances, and not everyone who freelances wishes for coworkers. I am a freelancers but don’t wish for coworkers at all, actually, as I enjoy working by myself. BUT it is fun to be around other creatives and in a work environment, hence the nationwide co-working trend. The other night at the mashable event (social networking), I met one of the guys who started Conjunctured, the coworking house on East 7th. It’s gotten some TV news coverage and was the first of its kind in Austin, though now there’s a second coworking space planned for downtown called LaunchPad.

Anyway, the Grand Opening is this Saturday and totally open to everyone. The invite is on facebook. I think the concept is cool, and free, open parties are always cool for meeting new people and exploring new things!

Real Estate: The Importance of an Agent

As I mentioned before, my brother and I are looking for a house. What I didn’t mention is that we’ve been through three. That is, we’ve put in offers on three, only to have something not work out.

The Blue House had been on the market for months with no activity when we put in our offer. Another offer came in the same day, and the agent (not a good one) asked us to put in our final offer. This is not how negotiating works, people. I give an offer, you respond, I respond, and so on. To ask for a final offer right off the bat was weird–though we did it. The other offer won, and we were without a house. Six weeks later, it’s closed, and we find out that they offered only $5,000 more than we did, and then got a $5,000 repairs allowance … making their offer essentially the same. If the other agent hadn’t insisted upon our final offers, she probably could have gotten us to go higher, securing her client a better deal.

Deal number two was on a house we really couldn’t afford, the Basement House, and it had some scary possible asbestos and plumbing issues, so we ended up backing out on it. Deal number three was a lowball offer on a house that had been on the market for awhile. The owner came down $5k in his counteroffer, and didn’t even bother to respond to our counteroffer. He switched agents, reduced the price, and sold the house in a week.

So, as you can see, agents play a major role in scoring your dream house–finding it isn’t the only hard part! Most agents in Austin are more laid-back than in other markets. But a good agent will always be in communication with you … “here are some possible houses,” “this is what x house you saw last week sold for,” “I haven’t heard back from the other agent yet,” etc. If you find a talkative agent, you’re golden!

More and more buyers are opting to search listings on their own, which focuses the agent’s role on negotiation, where communication is again the key skill. An agent should offer solid advice and opinions, but also be willing to do whatever you want in terms of making an offer or counteroffer. When choosing an agent, listen to friends’ recommendations, but also pay attention to your rapport with him or her–a connection will communication that much easier!
