Guest Post: TRIO Happy Hour

Downtown Austin’s Trendy New Happy Hour
Review by William Jackson & Sandra Rascon

If you haven’t experienced a Happy Hour at TRIO at Four Seasons, you haven’t truly experienced Happy Hour in downtown Austin.

Austin’s newest place to be “scene” is nestled in the welcoming arms of the Four Seasons, located on the green banks of Lady Bird Lake, smack dab in the middle of the business and world-famous entertainment districts.  When you descend the grand staircase and round the corner, you can feel the excitement as you prepare to embark on what is sure to be a memorable journey of culinary and visual delights and lively conversations.  Is there a bad seat in the house?  We think not.  There’s the inviting outdoor patio overlooking the serene Lake, the spacious main dining room where views of nature peak through the stately windows, or the hip Wine Bar reminiscent of a trendy bar in Miami Beach — TRIO is the perfect setting to network, host a successful business event, or simply decompress.

Prepare to experience TRIO’s charming service, which seems like a perfectly executed theatrical production: attendants swirling in and stealing away almost invisibly, set into motion by nothing more than the subtle movement of your eyes, or the menu, signaling it’s time to let the show begin.  The management is as comfortable as family and has a knack for ensuring the enjoyment of each guest without compromising individuality. Be prepared for a brief, delightful, and engaging conversation that is never intrusive.

Prepare to experience food impressive in its precision.  Wonderful delicacies booming with flavor.  Chef de Cuisine Todd Duplechan has filled the menu with a tantalizing selection sure to delight even the most discriminating palate.  Not to mention menu items can be enjoyed at half-price, an enticing invitation to taste every selection at least once.

Unforgettable are the Mussels drenched in a rich broth of Roquefort, Prosciutto and Riesling – you will ask for a spoon or bread.  Even Truffle Fries rise to the occasion with Rosemary, Garlic and Meyer Lemon Aioli.  Certainly, the little-known three-day marinating process involving sugar is key to this simple yet amazing gourmet delight!  Lamb Sliders are not far behind, these tantalizing mini gourmet burgers are made with local lamb, tzatziki and cumin.

If you have the pleasure of meeting Chef Todd, inquire about the Pecan-Fed Pig, a spicy dish he introduced to us that is not on the Happy Hour menu but SHOULD BE!

If you prefer a cocktail, you won’t get any dirty looks or get your hand slapped, the accommodating bar staff is more than thrilled to make your request.  But, be advised, TRIO is known for its impressive wine selection with over 300 unique selections with 60 served by the glass.  Especially delightful are the Happy Hour selections, which are specifically selected to complement the food.  No surprise here, as the wine is personally selected by award-winning Sommelier, Mark Sayre who received the title of Austin’s Best Sommelier for 2007 from The Wine & Food Foundation of Texas and The Texas Sommelier Association. Mark says, “Baked Gulf Oysters and a glass or two of the Riesling, Schloss Vollrads, Germany, 2007–there’s nothing better.”

If Red is your choice, the secret is out about Cabernet Amavi Cellars, a Washington 2006!  It stands alone as a medium bold that leaves the palate refreshed.  Truly, it is one of the few red wines that can be enjoyed without an edible complement and is a discovery worth making.  If champagne is desired, enjoy a glass of Louis Roederer – well known in France for gracing weddings and special occasions.

The hallmark wine experience at TRIO is that your glass is always filled from a bottle at your table, in front of you.  You’ll feel as if you’re at an exclusive wine tasting event as even the table settings are smartly designed and arranged to mimic those set at an actual wine tasting.

With four star service, elegant cuisine, expansive drink selections, trendy guests, local pundits and complimentary valet for all TRIO Happy Hour clientele, this upscale Wine Bar is everything it should be — allowing you to enjoy life as it’s meant to be.  You can’t help but become a regular.

After all, aren’t you supposed to be Happy and much more enlightened, when you leave Happy Hour?

Happy Hour at TRIO is Monday through Saturday, 5pm to 8pm, 98 San Jacinto Boulevard, Austin, 78701. For additional information, call (512) 685-8300.

Friday night with the Austin SSC

I have spent many a Saturday morning with the venerable sports and social club, but that’s more sports than social. Turn the norm on its head with a Friday night Social–doesn’t hurt that you could potentially win vodka for a year:

It’s about time for a social event that anyone can attend, regardless of whether you are currently playing a SSC sport. Start your night off right with $3 UV drinks and win some more free vodka while you are here by writing down your favorite UV shot combination. No bartending experience necessary! We want you to bring us your recipe for the new SSC shot to be featured on special after every game in 2009! Grab a bottle of UV Vodka today (any flavor) and start mixing! Then bring us your recipe to mix up on Friday, April 3rd. Everyone who submits a recipe gets a free mini bottle of UV. The winner gets UV for a year! We’ll also hold a raffle to give out even more bottles of our favorite vodka. No drink submission is necessary to attend. Come out with your friends to start your night off and enjoy $3 UV drinks for the entire event. Try a UV Grape Vodka & Sprite – highly recommended! Drink specials start at 8pm and the judging begins at 9pm.

Pop-up & Play at Malverde - Cities like New York and LA get fun pop-up shops all the time, but Austin is getting what may well be one of the first (at least not centered around a fest). Look for pieces from three of Jimenez’s lines: Urban Nomads, Hunger World, and Other, from $20 to $225. Nadel will have her sculptural bags on display. 6-9pm, Malverde, 2nd & Guadalupe

Thursday – Sorry for the late notice!

I totally meant to post these sooner, but got too excited about the 70% off sale! And tonight I’m going to the Justin Timberlake Singalong at Alamo Ritz, BUT here are two other things to check out if you don’t have plans and read the blog in time:

Dazed And Confused w/ Richard Linklater & Brewster McCracken at Alamo Drafthouse Lamar, 7 pm. Writer-director Richard Linklater’s answer to American Graffiti, 1993’s Dazed And Confused is considered a stoner classic for its dusk-to-dawn party atmosphere, but it’s more melancholy than its reputation might suggest. With no greater ambition than securing Aerosmith tickets in the morning, Linklater’s aimless characters go through various rites of passage on the last day of school, each a little apprehensive about making a new transition. As such, it’s a strange choice for a mayoral campaign fundraiser—but then, the candidate in question is the very progressive Brewster McCracken, fervent supporter of Austin’s film industry, so it’s easy to see why Linklater would throw this screening party for him. Here’s hoping McCracken’s own “morning after” is a little less bittersweet. [This is probably sold out, but I don't know]

This, however, is open for business:

Art + Style Happy Hour

Art Alliance Austin kicks off a month-long Second Street ART + STYLE series with a happy hour at new hot spots La Condesa and upstairs bar Malverde (if you haven’t heard of these two, you clearly don’t read my blog enough. I’ve raved about the drinks too many times to count, and the food isn’t half bad either, if expensive…) today from 6-8PM.

Complimentary appetizers (!!!) and 42 Below Vodka drink specials

Artists Sodalitas and Cruz Ortiz will discuss their works currently installed at La Condesa and Malverde.

TRIO at the Four Seasons Introduces a Happy Hour!

I’ve raved about TRIO more times than probably any other restaurant, but it isn’t necessarily a low-budget night out. Enter Happy Hour. Now one of the city’s finest restaurants and wine-spots is offering a Happy Hour Monday through Saturday from 5-8pm!

1/2 off appetizers and 1/2 off wines by the glass in the TRIO Wine Bar area; happy hour guests also enjoy complimentary valet parking

The TRIO wine bar sits on the lower level of the hotel, in view of the green lawn and Lady Bird Lake. The time is perfect for a light dinner or after-work drinks, the price is a way-cheap $3.50-$8 for appetizers and $3.50-$9.50 for glasses of wine, and I’m sure if you ask reeeeeally nicely you could probably request one of their AMAZING Popovers…

BONUS: Since this week is their first week offering happy hour, they’re giving away a FREE appetizer AND glass of wine to the first 20 people that show up EVERY DAY. Get thee to TRIO, stat!

A refresher on the kind of thing TRIO offers (free range beef!):

SXSW 2009: Tuesday’s Schedule + St. Patty’s Day!

A big day for downtown, to be sure!

As far as SXSW goes, not too big of a day though. BMI circulated an email this morning clarifying that even if you RSVPed, unless a BMI employee invited you or you’ve got a badge, you’re not getting in. So scratch Howdy Texas at Stubb’s off your to-do list. That leaves only these two:

5-7:30pm – Party with Kitchen Sisters at Ranch 616 (free apps + margaritas)

6pm-2am – Art Disaster 8 at Beauty Bar (happy hour, open bar from 8:30-10pm, not sure after that)

Or, resign yourself to paying for green beer and head to Fado/Fourth Street, where the street closes and people party under tents in the street outside …
