Austin: Scamps and Scoundrels Dog Challenge

Scamps and Scoundrels: An Urban Dog Challenge benefitting Austin Pets Alive! On Saturday, December 4th, registered teams of one dog and 1-4 humans will figure out clues to local, downtown dog-friendly businesses. Once there, the teams will be required to complete a fun task before moving on to the next location. When all tasks are complete, the teams will travel to the new Austin Pets Alive! building to check in to the finish line and join a HUGE party awaiting them.

The party (open to everyone!) will run 5-8pm and will feature Tito’s Vodka, Sweet Leaf Tea, Republic Tequila, Uncle Billy’s, Amy’s Ice Cream and a “drool-worthy” silent auction.

Blair Smith and Alesha Mathews of Dirty Dog have long dreamed of having an event for dogs and their owners in which they could do an activity together while checking out some of Austin’s favorite dog-friendly businesses. Sarah Wolf and Beth Bellanti round out the talented team of planners.

Austin: Fall Frommage Fest at French Legation

Love cheese? Love wine? Love Texas?

Are those even questions? Hit up a free event celebrating the preservation project currently underway at the French Legation, a non-profit historic house museum and the oldest wood-frame structure and home in Austin. Head to The French Legation Museum Wednesday November 10th from 5:30 – 7pm for incredible Austin cheese creations and French wine.

Creations from Austin’s Indulge Cheese paired with the gift of wine from our special friend Franc Petit, of France, from the 13th century vineyard Domaine de l’Abbaye , located in Villefranche-sur-mer, France, plus a delegation visit from Villefranche-sur-Mer, led by Deputy Mayor Cedric Cirasa. Part of a continued effort by the FLM to support beneficial cultural and economic Franco-Texan connections, the Fall Fest kicks off a week of Austin area activities designated for the French visitors.

Austin: Announcing the Winner of Art 5×7 Social Tix

When I asked you guys what you’d put in your 5×7″ canvas, I expected some loony answers, but these were even Keep Austin Weirder than I could have imagined. It was tough to choose between “Leslie’s thong. And some hermit crabs” says Jeff, who doesn’t know that I strongly dislike Leslie but do enjoy the suggestion he’s making by combining the two objects, and Tolly, the nerd who is having her own ticket giveaway to this same event but wrote “NEVER TRUST A BIG BUTT AND A SMILE.” There was some other stuff too, but that’s the important part.

Ultimately, however, I have to reward KENDRA for her probably really honest answer: “Some major bling! Anything that small has got to shine. I’d fill that space with a serious splattering of golds, silvers, coppers and pewters.” The girl nailed two things: I love bling, and I love the show Kendra (as in former Hef girlfriend and Girl Next Door, now married to tight end Hank Baskett). Sure, she didn’t know her name was actually going to play a vital role in this decision, but that’s okay. Plus I think Kendra Baskett would approve of a bling-filled 5×7 square.

For the rest of you, $30 ain’t bad for a Friday night party. Get tix www.arthousetexas.org or 512.453.5312

Badass Lax/L.A.X party + GIVEAWAY!

In the spirit of things combining in Austin that don’t normally mix and inspired by the X Games, LXM PRO is throwing the lacrosse party of the century. Lacrosse is becoming more and more mainstream in Texas, and events like this are only going to up the sports popularity. The all-day action kicks off Saturday, April 10 at noon at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School with love of my life Kate Voegele (of “One Tree Hill” fame) singing the national anthem!

Lone Star Showdown: Texas vs. Texas A&M, one of the oldest college rivalries in the country.

All-Stars: 40 pros take the field with a roster that includes such superstars as four-time All-American and arguably the best attackman of his era, Joe Walters, and 3-time All-American & NCAA Player of the Year, Kyle Harrison.

THEN, there’s going to be some killer music: L.A.X (how apropos! … the cool kids call lacrosse “lax”), Bright Light Social Hour, and Carolina Liars.

There’s ALSO going to be a casting call by Sports Studio who casted roles in Waterboy, Invincible, Miracle, etc. They’ll be looking for athletic type of people to cast in future films/tv shows. Special Lacrosse clinics and a vendor village round out the offerings.

***WIN A PAIR OF TICKETS!! Leave a comment by noon on Friday, April 9 and I’ll announce the winner that afternoon!***

localiter finally launches!

Thursday 8-10pm at Kung Fu Saloon, my friend’s company will launch! It’s like Groupon or Living Social BUT totally Austin-centric.

“Austin is so much more than weird and wired; we are also well-connected as a city and we tap into this by incorporating local businesses into every aspect of our promotions,” says Localiter founder Kristina Garza. “The website, for example, will have flip video interviews for each daily promotion so that users can catch a glimpse of the actual ins and outs of the businesses we promote.”

The Belmont, Lift and Taco Deli are among the first to offer daily deals to Austinites through Localiter.com.  Service providers like alterations pros Ace Tailors and acupuncturist Claudia Voyles will also market their services using the Localiter collective buying concept.
