Happy Father’s Day!

My dad is awesome.

dad_nali

This is him with Denali, when she was just a puppy. He is funny.

My family isn’t really a brunching family, except when it comes to people’s birthdays, holidays, or relatives in town … erm, so maybe we are? Dad loves Waterloo Icehouse’s brunch, but then again, he’s never tried TRACE …

Menu: The á la carte menu features everything from Fried Chicken and Waffles to the Lavaca Omelet, Charcuterie Board, and hybrid “breakfast desserts” including the Cinnamon Roll Bread Pudding and the Drunken Doughnuts topped with a bourbon dulce leche. For the Hungry Man, a farmer’s breakfast which includes two eggs any style, farm house cheese, fried green tomatoes, cheese grits and slab bacon.

[UPDATED] Aspen: Aspen Mountain Opens Saturday

BREAKING UPDATE: I’ve heard from a reliable source that the mountain is NOT opening this weekend.

Thanks to some serious dumps of snow the past couple of days, “rumor” has it Aspen Mountain is opening Saturday!! Skiing four days earlier than we thought! SkiCo hasn’t officially announced it, but everyone knows it’s true!!

Of course, the hardcore have already been doing it … Chris Davenport was floating through powder on Back of Belle yesterday, while my lovely Vermonster was skinning up the mountain with five of his closest friends. The skiiers are nuts out here!!

Blog Action Day: WATER

Cathedral Lake in Aspen, Colorado

Blog Action Day is an annual event that unites the world’s bloggers in posting about the same issue on the same day. This year, the focus is WATER. I freakin’ love water. I love to drink it (at least 8 glasses a day), I love to bathe in it, I love to swim in it, I love to watch my dog try to swim in it, I love to watch it run down the windowpanes when it rains, I love to boil it for tea, I love to splash it in my dog’s face and see how she reacts. Water is awesome.

But lots of people waste water (long showers? running water while you brush your teeth? c’mon, those are OLD habits) and lots of people waste money on bottled water ($15 billion on disposable bottled water) and I want to help change that by raising awareness. Here’s the Blog Action Day ’10 pledge:

Here’s my favorite article I’ve written at EndlessBeauty.com about WATER (with reusable water bottle reviews!).

Happy Erf’s Birfday

Earth Day Things to Do Online:

- learn how to recycle your beauty product containers and what to look for in earth-friendly face washes

- buy Sigg water bottles from HauteLook (use this Invite to Hautelook if you’re registering for the first time)

- shop Gilt Groupe’s Eco Chic Day, where 5% of proceeds go to earthy charities and everything on sale is sustainable or earth-friendly, from clothes to housewares and furniture to baubles and jewelry (use this Invite to Gilt Groupe if you’re registering for the first time)

Earth Day Things to Do in Austin:

- visit J. Black’s for a Bacardi mojito Green Day celebration of their recycling efforts (they just started recycling in 2010 and have cut their waste amount in half) … lots of prizes and giveaways.

- booze at Belmont with Daily Juice cocktails (yum!)

- buy stuff from 50 local businesses and 5% of sales will be donated! List is here.

Whatever you do, start or recommit to recycling in your home, walk or bike instead of driving when you can, and minimize your in-home water usage by doing things like running full loads of laundry and turning off the tap while you brush your teeth.

Let the madness begin: SXSW 2010

It appears the SXSW media frenzy has come earlier than usual this year. It’s just less than a month out, but the twitter/blogger/media buzz is already loud and, well, buzzing. So I’ve come to your rescue, this is life in austin readers, and put together the beginnings of a spreadsheet:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Asjskwdlt0podDk4V2R6T1VScHNGa05kQ0hyd2Y4d3c&hl=en

I will be updating it as more and more free parties are announced.

Like all my posts, I’m only listing parties I’d go to. The spreadsheet also only has parties that are FREE and OPEN TO ANYONE (though you may need to RSVP), as well as offer something for free–food, booze, t-shirts, etc. Let’s face it (blasphemy alert): I don’t go to SXSW for the music, I go for the crazy atmosphere and energy of all the revelers, not just the bands. So I’m looking for more than my fave band (though Fader Fort usually hosts a few of those), I’m looking for other goodies too.

Sweeping SXSW generalizations:

  • Interactive has the best night/happy hour parties. Great for girls, because it’s mostly dudes. Usually the best swag too. My fave days of SXSW.
  • Film has some really cool, really big premieres that anyone can get into for $8. Worth waiting in line. Know little to nothing about film parties. Do they not happen?
  • Music is the big enchilada, and features stacked day parties. It can be harder to find free parties and booze at night.

Here are my Top Ten SXSW Recommendations:

  1. Decide and commit to:
    • GO BIG: hit tons of events every night
    • GO MEDIUM: hit just one event every night
    • GO WEEKEND WARRIOR: just hit the music festival. For this, you pretty much need only walk down East Sixth during the day to find free booze and food. You’re on your own at night, but you’ll likely be exhausted and too drunk to really know if you start at noon, so do that.
  2. Drink lots of water. 1:1 with booze especially as the hours wear on. Your hangover will thank you.
  3. RSVP to every single party you mightpossiblymaybeI’llthinkaboutitletyouknow attend. Much better to be a no-show than a no-go at the door.
  4. Get on twitter. Make friends.
  5. Charge your cell. You want to meet up with your (new) friends.
  6. Wear comfortable shoes.
  7. Wear sunscreen. It’s hot.
  8. Eat. Food is free or cheap, and plentiful. Kebabalicious rocks, they should have two trucks up by SXSW (7th & San Jacinto, 2ndish & Congress).
  9. Sleep 8 hours every night. See: #s 2, 6, 7
  10. Enjoy the street scene. There’s nothing else like it. (In other words, don’t bitch, don’t be a drama queen, and enjoy your free beer!)

Other sources for info:

And that’s it. Go out into the wide, wide SXSW world, grasshoppers. Use this spreadsheet: https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0Asjskwdlt0podDk4V2R6T1VScHNGa05kQ0hyd2Y4d3c&hl=en

Obligatory Valentine’s Day Post

Only because my google stats are telling me that everyone is getting to the blog via last year’s post, so I figured I needed to update it.

Go here for a hilarious article on alternative Valentine’s Day ideas. Bonus points if you can figure out which suggestion was mine …

As for me? I’ve got only one suggestion:

Gourmet Conversation Heart Cookies from Williams-Sonoma
The grown-up version of middle school’s colored candies in a paper box, Williams-Sonoma’s fresh butter and eggs, Nielsen-Massey vanilla and Guittard cocoa confections have all the charm of the schoolgirl original with a grown up flair. Available here, 8 cookies for $19.50.

Oh, fine, I’ll give you one other idea: last year the Vermonster and I implemented a fun tradition. On the 13th, we went out for the traditional Valentine’s dinner (“my date”) at Olivia (now open for lunch on the weekend! awesome!), and on the actual day of the Valentine, we stayed in (“his date”). It relieved some of the traditional pressure, and we had a lot of fun both nights.

Oh, and you need to Sweat with Your Sweetheart.

Oh, and I really wish I could go on a girl date to see Valentine’s Day (sorry, Tolly, I really do want to see it!) and drink wine and be with my besties.

So I guess I am gonna post on Valentine’s Day.

The Memorial Day Post

I’m throwing a bachelorette party this weekend, so I’ve all but written off Memorial Day, which means that in purely selfish interest, I’ve yet to post on the beloved summer kickoff (some call it a holiday to honor our fallen heroes …. psssh). Last year I went big, with a Memorial Day Party barge through Austin SSC AND a river float that landed me dehydrated and on the couch with my mom bringing me chicken noodle soup (recap here).

Should you want to enjoy a similarly ill-advised weekend, the Austin SSC party barge is already sold out, but here’s a Rotundo Entertainment Group party barge for $40. You can always head south to the river to float–yes, it’s bumper-to-bumper toobs, but everyone is prepared for the madness, so it’s actually much more fun and less headache than I imagined it would be.

Should you choose to stay on dry land, United Way of Central Texas is throwing a mega fundraiser called Give 5, where people are encourage to donate just $5 AND tons of local business are donating 5% of their sales ALL WEEKEND to United Way. Many are also offering discounts, free gifts, and cocktails when you mention the Give 5 program. For a list or to donate $5, click here.

If you’re out on the town Saturday night, look for an awesome bachelorette party … I can’t tell you what we’ll be doing or wearing, but I promise, you’ll know it’s us if you see us…
