Acting out the Best of Craigslist

That’s pretty much was Kidnapped by Craigslist was. [Best of Craigslist is a nationwide compilation of funny posts, look on the lefthand side of the craigslist screen for it] I went to this play on Friday night with two girl friends, and we were thoroughly entertained. The theater isn’t much, but the people were super friendly and the play made us laugh, so all was good.

There are only seven actors, and they play a number of different roles, all taken from craigslist posts. I’m pretty sure all the lines in the play are from posts. I thought it was really funny, but the problem is that I am (or at least used to be, when I had more time to mindlessly peruse the internet, um, at an office job) such a craigslist aficionado that I had already read many of the funny posts! Sure, they adapted some material to be Austin-specific, but even those I had already read! So I think it’d be funnier if I didn’t know how the post ended, you know?

That said, the “host” of the show is this absolutely hilarious tall, skinny guy in suspenders with a booming Circus voice. He rocks. And the redheaded guy is really stinkin’ funny too. The actors are quite funny, even though they sometimes can’t help but laugh at their own lines.

It’s only an hour long, which is the perfect length for this funny and funnily-played play.

The show closes next weekend, with shows Thursday at 8, Friday at 8 and 10, and Saturday at 8 and 10. Here for info/tickets.

I love the jobs, I love the apartment/real estate search, I love the groups, I love the activities, and most of all, I love the missed connections! So imagine my surprise, delight, and wonder when I read that there’s a play about craigslist!

Kidnapped by Craigslist is a unique new comedy that explores the carnivalesque, cult-like phenomenon that is Craigslist. Combining actual postings from the Austin website with scripted material, the show tells the true stories locked inside an online community that has shaped and inspired today’s internet generation.

Craigslist loves the Boom Boom Room!

I was thrilled to find this missed connections post on craigslist: http://austin.craigslist.org/mis/658406389.html

It could have been us! My girlfriend (platonic) and I are magnets for this sort of thing (the one guy-two girls sort of thing? I don’t know exactly what a this sort of thing is), except that for once in our lives we didn’t dance with any strangers. Upon reading this, my friend responded via email:

1. WOW!! That could totally be us. If we weren’t so involved in the friends we were with, I would really think it was us.

2. Did this happen?

3. Maybe this guy would actually get our numbers?

4. THREESOME?!?!?!!!!!!!!

Someday I will be a missed connection … or at least half of one! We’re lucky in Austin to have such an active craigslist–for everything from couches to jobs to roomies to cars to missed connections! I didn’t realize people in other cities weren’t as into craigslist as Austinites are. Way to embrace free classifieds, Austin!

Volleyball

Me at my funniest … we joked about posting this ad while we were playing sand volleyball last weekend, but when I came into a couch today (also a funny story), and had to post the old one on CL, I decided to go ahead and make this post too. So far, no response.

Couch story: So my mom called to tell me she found an awesome leather couch with a sleeper in it for only $200. I thought she was telling me to buy it, so I was really excited. Instead, she was buying it for herself, to replace the bed in what was once my room and officially kick me out of their house for good (which is fine, since I own my own).
So she calls today after they went to pick it up and says, “You want a couch for $200?”
“Um, don’t you?”
“It doesn’t fit in my house!!”
Hahahaha. The room they wanted it in is on a corner, and the couch was too big to turn the corner. I felt a little bad, but once they got the couch over here and I saw how freakin’ awesome it makes my house look, I did not feel bad at all!
