Polkadots Cupcake Factory

When I heard about this company called Polkadots Cupcake Factory suddenly sponsoring all these happy hour-type events, I had to see what the deal was. Plus, the cupcake trend has gotten so out of hand, and these places are cropping up everywhere.

A friend and I split two cupcakes: the cookie dough, and the chocolate peanut butter. Both were really good, the cookie dough’s chocolate icing wasn’t as good, but the inside had a big ball of actual cookie dough inside, so I couldn’t complain too much. As for the other cupcake, the chocolate cake wasn’t as good as the peanut butter icing. Basically, I needed the peanut butter icing on the cookie dough cake.

I also must admit that I’m writing this post-visit to Sprinkles, a cupcake bakery in Dallas (they also have one in Houston) that started in Beverly Hills and which gave me absolutely the best half of a cupcake I could ever have imagined. I mean, this thing was OUTSTANDING. Flavor: Peanut butter chocolate. Description: “chocolate chip-studded peanut butter cake with fudgy milk chocolate cream cheese icing.” Love: me. I only got a half, and it changed my life. It was better than the wedding cake I tried later that night. Sprinkles, please come to Austin.

In the meantime, Polkadots is probably the best substitute. Or I’ll have to give them another try to see if they can trump Sprinkles. :-)

Tiff’s Treats to Open a North Location

Tiff’s Treats is a local legend among college students, famous for their deliveries of hot, fresh cookies. I had a friend whose date sent her a box a few hours before their date one time …. precious. Anyway, I’ve only had them once and thought they were good enough, but not just to-die-for like everyone says. (See yelp–they love ‘em over there!) I hear lots of offices get them delivered as well, to brighten up the office atmosphere–or bribe their workers. Whichever.

The new store in North Austin is set to open late summer or early fall, and will allow northern neighborhoods to take part in cheap Tiff’s Treats deliveries rather than the more expensive courier service currently used to deliver outside the downtown delivery zone (from 1st to 29th between I-35 & Mopac and from 29th to 51st between I-35 & Lamar).

Tiff’s Treats also offers brownies, ice cream, milks, and all sort of accoutrements like balloons and patterned boxes. And I recommend signing up for their mailing list: once a week they send you coupons, and that’s it!

Joy o joy, Dhaba Joy!

When I first stopped in to Dhaba Joy to see what a vegan bakery looked like, and because I had read tons of awesome reviews on yelp.com, I got a vegan cookie. It was the most amazing, succulent, delicious cookie of my entire life. I became obsessed, and took everyone I knew there, and they loved them too. Obviously, I had to stop this behavior before I blew up to the size of a balloon.

But a few nights ago a friend was craving dessert, so we went to Dhaba Joy. I had yet to try the oatscreme, a soft-serve vegan concoction made of oats. I heard mixed reviews–some said it was amazing, others said it tasted like poop. I was wary. We got a sample of the chocolate, and it was very interesting. A little spicy, very authentically chocolate flavored, and not too sweet. My friend and I ended up splitting an oatscreme sandwich–this mess of chocolate oatscreme smushed between a snickerdoodle and chocolate chip cookie. It was a little piece of Heaven. And half of one was PLENTY. My friend doesn’t even like chocolate, and she loved the oatscreme.

Now I must admit, there was also a fella in our party, a vegetarian, not vegan, and he did not like the oatscreme–he didn’t like that hint of spiciness. He ordered the chocolate cheesecake. He didn’t like that either, so I tried it, thinking I might like it. It was bad. Just plain bad. It tasted like brown-colored tofu. Not cheesecake-y at all, not sweet, not delicious in any way, shape or form.

Lesson: stick to the dang cookies. They are amazing. Almond butter is the best if you ask me, but chocolate chip and snickerdoodle are close seconds. And the cupcakes are pretty delish too, although I’ve only been able to stray from the cookies once and wasn’t impressed enough to miss out on a cookie. Even if you’re not anywhere close to veganism, try the stinkin’ vegan cookies at Dhaba Joy. They will amaze you.

Vegan Cookie!!

I ate a vegan cookie today. I think it probably contained the day’s worth of carbs, but that’s okay, because it was probably the single most delicious thing I have eaten in the past thee years. I’m pretty sure. It was an almond butter cookie from vegan bakery/coffeeshop/Toy Joy-neighbor Dhaba Joy. It was astounding. I wanted to buy another, and another, and another, and take them home and “save” them–that is, devour them in the car and feel guilty about it, but not so guilty that I stop eating the melty, crumbly, crunchy-soft, sweet, nutty, downright succulent cookie. Perfect texture, perfect taste. Go eat one. I can’t vouch for anything else in there, but I might sell my soul for another one of these almond peanut butter cookies… if it had less carbs, anyway. Mmmmmmm, cookie …
