Austin: Dogwood Grand Opening

Everyone loves the Bachelor Bars (an article I wrote in 2007!): Molotov, The Marq, Chuggin’ Monkey, Dizzy Rooster, and Thirsty Nickel. In the old Mother Egan’s spot next door to Molotov, the brothers bachelor (Brad, Chad, & Wes Womack) and partner Jason Carrier have reinvented the pub with a distinctly Southern flare. They’ve been open for a few weeks now–and they’ve already hosted a Maxim party–and have gotten rave reviews on yelp, with people very excited about the laid-back but slightly upscale atmosphere.

The GRAND OPENING of The Dogwood Austin kicks off at 4pm today, Wednesday August 25th!

Free apps from 6-8pm (or maybe 10? reports vary) and the first 250 guests will receive a complimentary gift (rumored to be a free T-shirt stuffed in a mason jar they’ll fill with free Sweet Tea Vodka all night long)! $4 featured drink menu.

Perhaps the best thing about Dogwood? An only-in-Austin tap of frozen Deep Eddy Sweet Tea Vodka, surrounded by metal and ice so it’ll always be freeeeeezing cold. Graham’s Texas Tea may be better than Deep Eddy, but it doesn’t come out of frozen tap (except maybe at your house). Also, four sangrias (one made with whiskey!), 6 local beers on tap, and a “Skinny Menu” for summer lovers watching their calories.

Southern boys are just so thoughtful, aren’t they?

Aspen: Bentley’s Bloody Mary Bar

You take this:

Glass of Vodka

Add what you want from this:

Bentley's Bloody Mary Bar

And you get:

Oh, there’s no photo. Because I ate too many pickled things (Dilled brussel sprouts? Texas pickled okra? Pickled garlic? Spicy pickled pickles?) and drank just one Bloody Mary and got tipsy.

The Vermonster has been telling me I shouldn’t go to Bentley’s since I moved here. Now I think I know why. It’s an Aspen locals joint, so that means mostly boys, and they like their drinks strong. I mean, who doesn’t? But it’s no wonder my boyfriend doesn’t want me in a den of men drinking heavy pours.

Also. How does Bentley’s, an English pub in the historic and beautiful Wheeler Opera House building, four steps up from the sidewalk, manage to feel like a dingy basement when it has windows OPENED TO THE STREET? It makes no sense to me. And even though I’d pay $8 for the Bloody Mary Bar just to fill my glass with pickled things and serrano tomato juice, it was the oddest-looking Bloody Mary Bar I’ve ever seen. Wooden shelves of condiments?

Nonetheless, an Aspen recommendation. Only in Aspen.

Also. Add mustard to your next Bloody Mary.

Aspen: WOLFMOTHER

So it’s late notice, but WOLFMOTHER is playing at Belly Up tonight. Doors at 9p, show at 10. Tix are $50. Word on the street is that Wolfmother puts on one of the best live shows around, so the expense is probably worth it. Belly Up is a crazy-intimate venue, so seeing a show that’s notoriously good live so close is gonna be pretty freakin’ sweet.

I can’t stop saying WOLFMOTHER like they did on 101x awhile ago when Wolfmother came to Austin … it was like a deep baritone, overly dramatic WOLF…MOTHER. Hahaha.

Austin: New Sunday Brunch at J. Black’s

It’s been awhile since I’ve ventured away from Moonshine or The Carillon for Sunday Brunch, something I take seriously. Those two perennial all-stars are just too good! But I got word today that there’s a new contender: J. Black’s.

brunch-7810.jpg

Before you write it off as the place you don’t want to revisit from the night before, let’s talk about their Mix-Your-Own Bloody Mary Bar. I’ve long held an I-don’t-really-like-Bloody-Marys stance, but after several poolside visits to Aspen’s St. Regis for a $5 Bloody Mary that is absolutely phenomenal, I’m changing my tune. I don’t really like MOST Bloodys, that is, the ones that are all tomato and no flare. We’ve had this revelation before (hi, Frank’s), but it always feels like the first time.

J. Black’s Bloody Mary bar isn’t the first in town, but it’s versatile: start with Austin’s own Tito’s vodka, then add your standard favorites, including things that aren’t so standard like fiery horseradish (must!), cherry peppers, cocktail onions, and pickled okra (only in the South).

Of course Union Park is doing a brunch too, and has been for over a year. Why another? Owner Sean Fric says, “West Sixth Street has become so much more than a center for Austin nightlife. The growth in our corner of downtown, especially with all of the new residents, has increased daytime foot traffic and we felt there was a demand for more dining options. At J. Black’s we’ve always tried to be a place for all occasions, so brunch just made sense to us.”

The brunch food (not a buffet, sadly) features an Open Faced Egg Sandwich, Breakfast Pizza, and their signature “Title Tacos,” one commemorating each year of the University of Texas’ National Championships. These breakfast tacos are made with farm fresh eggs(!!) and  pulled pork, onions, and smoked gouda (1969) or portobello mushrooms, arugula, sundried tomatoes, shallots, and goat cheese (2005).

Brunch menu is available Sunday from 11am-4pm. jblacks.com

Aspen: Ute City Bar & Grill

With my parents in town for just two nights, we decided to hit the town one night and cook one night. On our night-on-the-town, we debated heartily before settling on Ute City Bar & Grill because its menu looked good, it was expensive but not outrageous, and its location is on that strip of see-and-be-seen restaurants in Aspen (Social, LuLu Wilson on its side, Jimmy’s, Cache Cache, Campo di Fiori, Bruno’s on the other side).

I’ll save you the trouble of reading all about my experience and say: The food was good. The service was terrible.

We were not to be see-and-be-seen, as they sat us at the furthest back table in the restaurant immediately next to the kitchen. Alright, we didn’t have reservations, we’ll take it. We order a bottle of wine, not cheap, not expensive. We toast, and I’m looking at the lint in my glass before I sip when I spot a FLY in my wine. I very nicely point this out to our waiter, who, flustered, grabs me another wine glass, pours most of the rest of the bottle in, and says, “oh, we’ll take a couple of dollars off for that.”

We’ll take a couple of dollars off for that?!

After appetizers (good but small calamari, delicious beet salad), she offers me another glass of wine, to make up for the missing glass from our bottle. I decline.

We have dinner – out of five diners, we only ordered two dishes, the halibut and the eggplant-sweet potato “lasagna” (no noodles). The veggie lasagna was good but lacked a certain pizazz. The halibut was excellent in flavor, but lacked in presentation–it’s a white fish, served on a white plate, over “spanish” pinkish rice. We also ordered the quinoa artichoke side–delish! and the summer vegetable medley, which was good but not particularly memorable.

When the bill came, the bottle of wine, at full price, was still on there.

The manager was super friendly, and I wish we had told him about our experience. But we didn’t, so now the universe gets to hear about it. If you’re looking for just one Aspen restaurant to enjoy, Ute City wouldn’t be my top recommendation, but it’s worth trying if you’ve got several nights in Aspen.

Read all about the Ute City restaurant history here.

Austin: Genius TIKKR Watch Bar Crawl

In one of the best marketing ideas I’ve heard in a long time, join Austin-based watch-maker TIKKR for a West Sixth bar crawl where the drinks are free IF you’re sporting the right wristband–a TIKKR watch, natch. Genius? Genius.

Thursday night, the party starts at 8pm at Dirty Bill’s (511 Rio Grande), then proceeds to Annie’s West, Kung Fu Saloon, and other preppy but fun spots. The uber mod watches are square and rubber, $65 a pop, and customizable. To snag one before Thursday, stop into Beyond Tradition on 2nd Street, or email and beg them to sell you one on the spot.

Gibson, the new bar on South Lamar

I hear Gibson is the new place to be …

With superstar bar-ier (restaurant has restauranteur, finance has financier, what do bars have? bar-ier? bareur?) Matt Luckie at the helm, South Lamar’s Gibson is already a hotspot, in part because its Trailer addition serves some of the most decadent, unhealthy fare you could possibly imagine.

Texas Culinary Academy graduate and former Parkside line cook Chef Johnny Gross has put a unique spin on many American classics, including:

  • Tater Sticks: Fresh, hand-cut Idaho Russet, buttermilk battered and seasoned served with trailer sauce
  • The Trailer Burger: 1/4-pound burger seared to perfection, topped with crispy bacon, Swiss & American cheese, sandwiched between a Round Rock world famous donut (really?!)
  • The Loaded Baked Potato Dog: All-beef hot dog split, wrapped in bacon & a crisp slice of an Idaho Russet, topped with our signature queso, sour cream & chives
  • The BBQ Ranch Salad: Avocado, tomato, grilled corn, black beans, cucumber & mixed greens, tossed in our homemade bbq ranch dressing

Now, you guys know I eat the healthy, so there’s almost no way I’d recommend eating this, like I personally haven’t tried Gourdough’s because I couldn’t do it to myself, and you shouldn’t either. BUT, I respect the creativity and adventure of this menu, if not the complete disregard for health and #realfood. Eat sparingly. Or go just for drinks (because booze is healthy?), as they’ve got all sorts of special boozin’ events:

  • Happy Hour is Sun-Wed 4-9pm and Thurs-Sat 4-7pm
  • Wine tasting every Wednesday from 7-9 pm
  • Champagne tasting takes place every Thursday from 7-9 pm w/ complimentary cheese, strawberries, and chocolates and a free t-shirt

Mr. Matt Luckie says, “Gibson has a cool look and feel and is a great place for people to hang out for happy hour or a casual night out.”

March Bar Madness

You all probably know about Thrillist by now – the Daily Candy for dudes that chicks dig too. I dig it because the Austin Thrillist dude knows about everything cool before or at the same time as me–which never ceases to impress me. Anyway, the site is hosting a nationwide Bar Madness Sweepstakes – a user-driven, 7-round, nationwide elimination tournament pitting 52 sports bars (about half pre-selected by Thrillist) against each other until only one’s left standing…

Every round you vote in, regardless of how your bars fare, you’ll be entered to win a great big bar tab of up to $4,350.

The 2 bars voted as the Best in Austin by readers were ATX Sports Bar (what? where is this?) and Third Base Sports Bar. Thrillist’s 2 picks were Crown & Anchor Pub and The Tavern (now those I can stand behind … or in …). Now, we vote on the two out of those four bars that should advance to the next round and have the chance to compete to be the best bar in America!

Voting can be done here: http://madness.thrillist.com/

Rep our city with pride. And someone for the love explain to me what and where ATX Sports Bar is …

Achachay! at TC’s / I am not so good at music

Imma let you in on a lil secret. I recently wrote about TC’s Lounge for Austin Monthly’s Cool Things issue, as it is an undoubtedly Cool place. I got most of my information on the joint from Achachay!’s drummer, one Mr. Ryan Greenblatt. While his sunglasses may arise a Stevie Wonder in you as to why he’s wearing them (har, har), his drum skills are legit. And as a former Tuesday-night-resident, ‘Blatt knows a bit about TC’s.

Long story short: it’s the rest of funk rock band Achachay!’s first times playing in the venerable old bar that was once on the Chitlin’ circuit and is rumored to be the oldest operating bar on the east side, so the mix of old and new, cold air and no a/c, funk and rock, is gonna, well, rock. Oh, throw in some of Baby Girl’s delicious home cooking (fingers crossed for spaghetti) at just $5 AND a BYOL situation and you’ve got yourself one hell of a Tuesday.

Speaking of cool musicians to check out, go see Aly Tadros at Saxon Pub TOMORROW, Wednesday night. No idea what time. Pick up a freakin’ google, wouldja?

Here’s why I am the numero uno WORST person to write about music ever. Her publicist sent me this: “Aly’s Things Worth Keeping came out at the end of 2009 and has most of the guys from These United States… including Duane Lundy who produced Aly’s album as well as their last album,  Vandaveer’s latest, Ben Sollee’s latest… you catch where I’m going with this… just check out Swingset, if it doesn’t resonate with you, we’ll move on.”

1) I read that as “has most of the guys from the united states” which completely baffled me–is she nationalistic? a huge slut?

2) once I re-read it properly and realized it was referencing a band, I nodded my head like I understood (to the empty room) but had NO CLUE what it meant, much less who or what Vandaveer or Swingset (hello, playground?) was …

Nonetheless, when I listened to the girl’s record, I liked it. And that’s really the ultimate smell test. If someone pitches me, a Britney Spears/Taylor Swift-loving blogger, an indie folk singer and I like her, she must be pretty damn good.
