Austin: Free 24 Diner Food!

325,600 eggs were harmed in the making of a year of 24 Diner.
I know I write about 24 Diner a lot, but they have local food and free-range meat and delicious burgers and cool people and are open 24 hours a day and really, what’s not to love?

Free is also something you should love, as they’re celebrating their first birthday with free food and drinks on Wednesday, December 8, from 5 to 9 pm! Free delicious treats by chef Andrew Curren, specialty cocktails by sommelier Billy Caruso, select cold beers, and the garage soul sound of the Greyhounds.

Cocktails are Tito’s style … a 24 Diner Press (Tito’s, Topo Chico, muddled lime), 24 Bloody Mary (Tito’s, housemade mix, pickled vegetable garnish), Ben Crenshaw (Tito’s, organic black iced tea, mint, fresh-squeezed lemonade, muddled lemons) or Tito’s Texas Mule (Tito’s, ginger beer, fresh lime juice).

Aspen: World Cup Volunteer Party!

The World Cup Volunteer Rally (for the Aspen Winternational, the Women’s Ski World Cup) is this Thursday from 5 – 7pm at The Red Onion. It’s free and open to anyone interested in signing up to become an Aspen Winternational Women’s World Cup volunteer! Free drinks and food. The first 10 people in the door will receive a free prize.

The Aspen Winternational Audi FIS Women’s World Cup will be held November 27 – 28, 2010 on Aspen Mountain. Saturday at 10am & 1pm is the Giant Slalom, while Sunday at 10am & 1pm is the Slalom.

The weekend also includes the first Bud Light Hi-Fi Concert Series of the season at the base of Aspen Mountain on November 27. Talent TBD.

Aspen: Sex & The City 2

FREE Sex & The City 2 at Belly Up tonight, Tuesday, 8pm

Yep, I’m blogging about it again and I didn’t even love the movie. Hey, it’s off season, what else you gonna do? Nonetheless, to honor Breast Cancer Awareness Month, pink drink specials will be available during the screening of “Sex and the City 2.” Komen Aspen is also partnering with Belly Up to raise breast cancer awareness issues, and accepting donations during the event.

Austin: FREE Lunch Revealed!

Whoever said there’s no … oh geez, that’s a tired joke. Literally, not one but TWO places are offering you FREE LUNCH tomorrow.

Free Lunch #1: Pei Wei Thai Laarb

Tomorrow, Tuesday October 26th, Pei Wei is giving out free lunch to the first 250 fans who show up from 12-1pm–at an undisclosed location … except now they’ve disclosed it!! What’s for lunch? Executive Chef Eric Justice will be on-site preparing a Thai-spiced aromatic chicken dish paired with lettuce cups and coconut rice, traditionally known in Thailand as Laarb.  The off-menu, authentic street fare will be available free of charge for the first 250 Pei Wei lovers to arrive. Plus Thai Iced Coffee!

Free Lunch (ok, dinner) #2: Frito Pie from Tillamook Loaf Love

Hit up Jo’s Coffee on Congress for a free Tillamook-topped frito pie also tomorrow, Tuesday October 26th! But this one is more dinnertime, from 5-6p.

What on earth is Tillamook’s Loaf Love Tour? The first-ever cheese tour comprised of three refurbished VW buses designed to look like baby loafs of cheese, arriving in Austin today and rolling around until October 31. In addition to free Frito pie, the Loaf Love Tour will be handing out free cheese samples and coupons, while educating everyone about Tillamook’s award-winning cheese, voted World’s Best Medium Cheddar Cheese at the 2010 World Championship Cheese Contest. www.loaflovetour.com.

Austin: Grand Opening of Dancers Shape TODAY!

Dancers Shape opens TODAY in the recently completed mixed-use project at 5350 Burnet Road (by the Hat Creek that was the Arby’s), Dancers Shape is founded by former Radio City Rockette and UT Alum Jennifer McCamish, who developed her signature Dancers Shape class, combining modified elements from all forms of exercise that dancers use to maintain their shape and fitness, including ballet, yoga, Pilates, and traditional circuit training.

I cannot wait to try it! I mean, you’ve gotta trust a former ROCKETTE, right?

Other classes will include non-traditional Pilates, yoga and dance-inspired stretching techniques designed to strengthen, tone and sculpt the body. These movements are incorporated with the principle of overload, interval training, and polished off with mindful movement and joint stabilization to achieve maximum results in the least amount of time in any of the Dancers Shape classes, all of which aim to create lean, flexible muscles.

Like the uber-popular Barre3 or Physique 57 classes utilized by celebs, Dancers Shape also uses a ballet barre and a wood sprung floor.

Austin: Dogwood Grand Opening

Everyone loves the Bachelor Bars (an article I wrote in 2007!): Molotov, The Marq, Chuggin’ Monkey, Dizzy Rooster, and Thirsty Nickel. In the old Mother Egan’s spot next door to Molotov, the brothers bachelor (Brad, Chad, & Wes Womack) and partner Jason Carrier have reinvented the pub with a distinctly Southern flare. They’ve been open for a few weeks now–and they’ve already hosted a Maxim party–and have gotten rave reviews on yelp, with people very excited about the laid-back but slightly upscale atmosphere.

The GRAND OPENING of The Dogwood Austin kicks off at 4pm today, Wednesday August 25th!

Free apps from 6-8pm (or maybe 10? reports vary) and the first 250 guests will receive a complimentary gift (rumored to be a free T-shirt stuffed in a mason jar they’ll fill with free Sweet Tea Vodka all night long)! $4 featured drink menu.

Perhaps the best thing about Dogwood? An only-in-Austin tap of frozen Deep Eddy Sweet Tea Vodka, surrounded by metal and ice so it’ll always be freeeeeezing cold. Graham’s Texas Tea may be better than Deep Eddy, but it doesn’t come out of frozen tap (except maybe at your house). Also, four sangrias (one made with whiskey!), 6 local beers on tap, and a “Skinny Menu” for summer lovers watching their calories.

Southern boys are just so thoughtful, aren’t they?

Austin: Why does it feel like the master toilet is heated?

I wish United Inspections, www.UnitedInspectionsTexas.com, had been around when my brother and I bought our house! Started by a very close friend of mine, the company is beyond thorough and highly professional. The inspector did our house as a practice run and was able to explain one of the house’s greatest mysteries: why does it feel like the master toilet is heated?

A: because the person who initially did the plumbing switched the hot and cold lines to the toilet, meaning it constantly pumps hot water! The more you flush it (during a party, for instance), the hotter the seat and w.c. gets.

A good home inspector is one of those services the average person doesn’t use all that often, but it’s crucial that you have a good one so you don’t end up buying a house with problems. So if you are in the market for a home or are ready for an inspection, let me suggest United Inspections.

Austin: AYC Fave Awards Launch Party Tonight

Austin Young Chamber Launches The AYC’s FAVE Awards, the first ever AYC’s Favorite Austin Ventures & Enterprises (FAVE) Awards, an awards gala honoring Austin area businesses that cater to young professionals, on Friday, November 5 at the Driskill Hotel.

To kick off this new awards gala, AYC will host a launch party today, Thursday July 8, at Molotov from 5:30 to 7:30 pm!
