Austin: Dogwood Grand Opening

Everyone loves the Bachelor Bars (an article I wrote in 2007!): Molotov, The Marq, Chuggin’ Monkey, Dizzy Rooster, and Thirsty Nickel. In the old Mother Egan’s spot next door to Molotov, the brothers bachelor (Brad, Chad, & Wes Womack) and partner Jason Carrier have reinvented the pub with a distinctly Southern flare. They’ve been open for a few weeks now–and they’ve already hosted a Maxim party–and have gotten rave reviews on yelp, with people very excited about the laid-back but slightly upscale atmosphere.

The GRAND OPENING of The Dogwood Austin kicks off at 4pm today, Wednesday August 25th!

Free apps from 6-8pm (or maybe 10? reports vary) and the first 250 guests will receive a complimentary gift (rumored to be a free T-shirt stuffed in a mason jar they’ll fill with free Sweet Tea Vodka all night long)! $4 featured drink menu.

Perhaps the best thing about Dogwood? An only-in-Austin tap of frozen Deep Eddy Sweet Tea Vodka, surrounded by metal and ice so it’ll always be freeeeeezing cold. Graham’s Texas Tea may be better than Deep Eddy, but it doesn’t come out of frozen tap (except maybe at your house). Also, four sangrias (one made with whiskey!), 6 local beers on tap, and a “Skinny Menu” for summer lovers watching their calories.

Southern boys are just so thoughtful, aren’t they?

Austin: Why does it feel like the master toilet is heated?

I wish United Inspections, www.UnitedInspectionsTexas.com, had been around when my brother and I bought our house! Started by a very close friend of mine, the company is beyond thorough and highly professional. The inspector did our house as a practice run and was able to explain one of the house’s greatest mysteries: why does it feel like the master toilet is heated?

A: because the person who initially did the plumbing switched the hot and cold lines to the toilet, meaning it constantly pumps hot water! The more you flush it (during a party, for instance), the hotter the seat and w.c. gets.

A good home inspector is one of those services the average person doesn’t use all that often, but it’s crucial that you have a good one so you don’t end up buying a house with problems. So if you are in the market for a home or are ready for an inspection, let me suggest United Inspections.

PLUS, there is a summer months 35% discount!!

Aspen: Thursdays in Snowmass

After Food & Wine, I’d say the next most-talked-about thing by people who have lived or visited Aspen in the summer is “those free outdoor concerts … on the mountain … in Snowmass …” they usually say, as if recalling the good times first and barely letting me break into their reverie for the details of where. It’s technically called the Free Thursday Night Concert Series, and it starts this Thursday at 6:15pm, and every Thursday after that until August 19.

Bring a blanket or lawn chair and a picnic basket. Beer, wine, and “grilled foods” are for sale, and there are reportedly always people relaxing and chilling and people going nuts and dancing up a storm. Kids play in a bouncy castle with other kids, so it’s pretty perfect.

Here’s the sched:

July 1 – Firefall followed by Fireworks (ha)
July 8 – Beausoleil
July 15 – Papa Grows Funk
July 22 – Pure Prairie League
July 29 – Carrie Rodriguez
August 5 – Tab Benoit
August 12 – Holmes Bros
August 19 – These United States

Take Back Your Lunch

There’s a new movement starting this Wednesday across the country called “Take Back Your Lunch.” All you have to do is dine with friend in a park or public place to get away from your computer for an hour.

Why? Take Back Your Lunch is a part of The Energy Project for Tony Schwartz’s new book “The Way We’re Working Isn’t Working,” now a NYT best seller. Taking an hour for lunch has the potential to change the way people work across the country by empowering them to take back a “lost benefit” — lunch! Did you know that the average worker takes only 20 minutes for lunch, often at their desk? A break can re-energize an re-focus you for the afternoon.

As someone who–when she was in a corporate office anyway–INSISTED upon lunch, even if it was just fifteen minutes for a stroll around downtown in 100-degree heat, I fully support this notion. I think the time you take away from your desk completely refreshes you, making you that much more productive in the afternoon. I also used to go work out during lunch, which has the added benefit of clearing your head and helping you generate new ideas.

In Austin, the fabulous crew from Giant Noise is headed over to Central Market tomorrow at 12:30pm, go meet up with them!

Hit up the Dad Rocks concert at The Mohawk from 5-8pm with your pops and hear local bands English Teeth and Car Stereo (Wars), snap pics with Annie Ray, nosh on Frank hot dogs (coincidentally, my own pops is NAMED Frank, so that’s cool), and nab Tiff’s Treats, Waialua Soda Works Hawaiian sodas, and GoodPop Popsicles for dessert.

Aspen: Chili Pepper & BrewFest

In an event you’d think you’d see in Texas, Snowmass is hosting the 7th annual unofficial summer kick-off, The Chili Pepper & Brew Fest.

The chili is legit–it’s part of the International Chili Society’s chili competitions and tastings in Snowmass, while microbrewers face off in a prestigious summer ale competition featuring 50 plus breweries (listed below). New this year, there will be a European and exotic beer tasting tent. Fanny Hill rocks with hot music like Brett Dennen and George Clinton all weekend.

The Fest is today (starting at 5:30pm) and tomorrow (starting at 3pm), tix range from $25 for a one-day concert pass to a $75 two-day Champion pass good for chili, beer, and concerts.

For an extra $15 with your ticket or $25 without, you can hit the Official After Party After Dark at the Viceroy pool. Doors at 10pm.

Breweries include: Odell Brewing, Oskar Blues, Ska Brewing, Tommy Knocker, Glenwood Canyon Brew Pub, Aspen Brewing Co, Avery Brewing Co, Bristol Brewing Co, Great Divide, Stone Brew, Left Hand Brewing, Wynkoop, Deschutes Brewery, Twisted Pine Brewing, Sierra Nevada, Flyingdog Ales, Breckenridge Brewery, Alaskan Brewing Company, Full Sail Brewing Company, Eskes Brew Pub, Redhook, (Craft Brewers Alliance, Inc.), Kona, Widmer, Shiner Beers, Durango Brewing Co, Del Norte, Steamworks, Rifle Brewing Company, AC Golden Brewing Company, Upslope Brewing Company, Santa Fe Brewing Company, Crazy Mountain Brewing Company, Boulevard Brewing Company, Rockslide, Trumer Pils or Bridgeport Hop Czar, Brew Dob (Scotland), Wine Cru Distributing, Coopers (Australia)

The TOMS Wedge

I did not jump on the TOMS bandwagon, despite thinking it’s awesome that they donate a pair of shoes for every pair sold, the bottom line is that TOMS are just plain ugly. I mean, the wrap-boot-mummy atrocity that they put out after the slip-ons? I die. And not in the Rachael-Zoe-I-Die-Is-Good-Way, in the way where I’d rather curl into a ball in the fetal position than wear these wrap boot shoe things.

I do not wear ugly shoes.

Enter the TOMS Wedge, many years later, with the casual-cool style perfectly appropriate for a wedge. The canvas. The stripes. The peep toe. The raffia. It’s all right. And kids still get free shoes! (Not wedges, lest you were concerned. The ugly other ones)

Available for a cool $69 from the website.
