Winner Winter Winner

When I asked for your fave winter clothes in exchange for the chance to win tickets to Sunday’s Shop787 event, I got tons of responses (and keep in mind that we’re Texans here), but here’s a sampling of my personal faves:

  • My favorite (new) winter clothing item would have to be my plum coat from Gap. It is so fun and has great pockets. Great pockets are lacking nowadays in women’s outerwear.

Plus… it’s plum, one of my favorite fall/winter colors.

  • my favorite winter item is a hat that I got at Camden Market in London 8 years ago. It converts from a regular hat into a warm open headband, so its really two pieces in one.

  • Georgia

I love my new (faux) leather motocross jacket! I wore it recently with a blueish grey silk dress (or sub out chiffon) with black tights and black slouchy booties. It was a great juxtaposition of tough and sweet. Result: felt like I stepped out of Lucky!

  • Ashley

My favorite winter item is definitley my red pea coat. It looks great with jeans and heels and is light enough that I can wear it pretty regularly here in Texas. The red really helps a girl stand out in the usual dark colored winter coats.

Vic, I love winter plum too. Ally found an amazingly handy convertible winter piece, while Georgia won me over with her closer “Result: felt like I stepped out of Lucky!” but ultimately the WINNER is and the two free tickets to Shop 787 this SUNDAY go to …

Ashley!!

You can’t argue with a girl who likes to stand out.

Help out the dogs, get 10% off Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, all for $1+!

Coffee Bean & Blue Dog

Pumpkin Blended … coffee + pumpkin + NSA vanilla powder = HEAVEN!

Soy Pumpkin Latte … espresso + soy milk + pumpkin + NSA vanilla powder = HOT HEAVEN!

Fall Flavors are in, and the pumpkin is outta this world–super pumpkin-y, just sweet enough, warm (even if it’s cold) and delicious. Also apple spice tea latte (haven’t tried yet … have wanted to … but can’t.stay.away.from.the.pumpkin) is a fab fall flavor.

CBTL discount braceletCalling this guy a bracelet might be a misnomer, but it’s a welcome one: tie this ribbon easily on your purse, tuck it into the coin section of your wallet, affix it to your rearview mirror, whatever. It’s easy to remember and easy to carry, so you’ll snag your 10% off all the way through December 4th.

My cashier this morning (don’t judge) started to tell me about the program before I whipped out my ribbon and when I did she exclaimed, “I love you! The dogs love you!”

I love you, Coffee Bean.

Free Mid-Week CrossFit Workout!

I know, I know, I’m always posting about free CrossFit workouts (hello, they happen at least once a month), but this one is special because it’s on a Wednesday at 9:30am. Totally random–or targeting those of us who refuse to get out of bed for 8:30am Saturday workouts–but totally awesome. Get to work early and cut out for a quick “doctor’s appointment” (more like “avoid the doctor appointment” because you’re taking care of your health and wellness by working on your fitness) under the Mopac bridge at Town Lake.

If nothing else, let me assure you that the Relentless coaches are all relentlessly hot, so there’ll be motivation…

PS – whether you worked out or not, stop by any Amy’s Ice Cream today from 2-6pm for a free scoop! Happy 25th birthday, Amy’s!

Aviary Sip-n-Shop

Aviary Décor Introduces a Hip Wine Bar with Modern Sophistication

South Austin haute home décor shop Aviary is now making its mark as a hip sip-and-shop wine lounge offering a fresh new twist on a “night out” with a chic home-like setting. After three and a half years as one of Austin’s hottest home décor shops, Aviary has shed its shop-only moniker, donned a new name, the Lounge @ Aviary, and beginning this Thursday October 29, will be the place to unwind with friends over a glass of wine and a few tasty nibbles.

Located at 2110 South Lamar, the Lounge @ Aviary is looking forward to building on its offerings. With a variety of wines from around the world on a regularly updated menu, the Lounge @ Aviary will have a perfect complement to its daily assortment of artisanal cheese plates, locally-grown produce, and hand-made charcuteries from A Noble Beast.

Owner Marco Fiorilo, who is originally from Argentina, says “I grew up where wine is a part of life. It’s a natural thing to enjoy with friends and I wanted to have a place where people could have a piece of the way I grew up.”

Patrons of the Lounge @ Aviary can hang out on the chic accent furniture, enjoy the outdoor patio, or shop woven placemats from Chilewich, glassware from Iittala, or pillows in vintage Italian silk from Lotus Designs. Local art includes concrete tables from Eric Billig, repurposed re-bar and steel furniture from Derek Mizner, and reclaimed wood and steel furniture from Ryan Anderson designs.

“Being well traveled, we noticed a need that was not being satisfied in our city.  If you go to New York, Buenos Aires, or Paris you will find standout shops that offer more than amazing wares and atmosphere, they also offer a lounge within which to experience their offerings,” says Fiorilo. “Our idea is to incorporate the modern design from around the world, the wine, tapas, and atmosphere along with exceptional local designs and bring them to one of the fastest growing communities in the U.S.”

Come and Take It: Frank

Have you guys heard much about FLAVORS of Austin? It’s like Austin Restaurant Week or Go Texan week where a restaurant sets up a multi-course prix-fixe meal, but there’s only one restaurant a week for every week in the next year. 52 weeks, 52 restaurants.

To get this party started, newbie Frank hosted a kick-off party; through tomorrow they’re offering a $12 hot dog flight featuring 5 different dogs. Upcoming restaurants include Cipollina, Satay, and Primizie.

But back to Frank, whose riff on a flag from the pages of our Texas history books is hilarious … it’s the image below, only with a weenie instead of a cannon.

ComeAndTakeItCannonDrawing107Sreveley

(Image from this Texas history site)

As a Texas native and history buff, I LOVE THIS.

In fact, this Friday, October 2nd, marks the anniversary of the day considered to be the first battle of the Texas Revolution, when the residents of Gonzales flew their “Come and Take It” flag with their “Come and Take It” cannon and incited the first battle of the revolution. The cannon was a Spanish-made, bronze artillery piece of six-pound caliber and was the object of contention between the Mexican military and Anglo-Celtic colonists. (Sort of the same scenario as the Alamo, minus the Mexican military actually giving the colonists the weaponry to fight them off … but the ballsy Texan storyline still rings true)

Anyway, none of this has much to do with THE BEST BLOODY MARY I HAVE EVER DRANK. I do not like bloody marys. I am not a big tomato fan and the thought of drinking tomato juice and vodka makes me want to throw up. But one glance at the dolled up mason jar of juice and I had to try. Such a sucker.

Frank bloody mary(Note that I am in the upstairs bar area, which has low ceilings, the floor of your elementary school gym, exposed brick, and a sweet view of the rest of the restaurant. It is my new favorite spot.)

Skewer of olive, cheese, and banana pepper, thick slice of over-crispy (just how I like it) bacon, and salt-and-pepper rimmed glass? The devil is in the details. My hotdoggin’ companion says the devil is in the horseradish, as in that it has any at all. We also heard whispers of fennel. The perfectly burly bartender said he makes the mix with ZingZang (even I know that’s the best) and then adds 12 other spices. We’ve identified 2, only 10 more to go.

They’re going to start carrying the mix in their store. Yes, their little general store, with grab-and-go items like Lucky Layla drinkable yogurt and granola bars, treats like that flat taffy I loved as a kid and Butters Brownies, and Texas specialties like lavender-infused everything from raspberry chipotle sauce to salsa.

When I went to Frank with girlfriends for happy hour, we weren’t overly impressed. Sure, the place is cute and rustic and modern at the same time, but the dogs were average at best and two of the girls suffered from heartburn. We’re not that old. In fact, we’re really not old at all. Anyway, I’m glad I got to go back again and sample their more gourmet offerings, because that’s where it’s at.  Looks like The Hungry Engineer got more samples than I did, and check there for photos, but I adored the Jalapeno Venison Sausage with Blueberry Coulis and Butter Kase Cheese … not as spicy as I’d like, but I loved the smokey flavor and the tart blueberry. Yum.

They use local meats whenever possible, and most of their gourmet items are happy, free-ranging animals. But their pork isn’t, so when I crunched into that crispy crispy tomato-soaked piece of bacon, I felt a little pang of guilt. And drinking the bacon-infused vodka and Maker’s Mark, which is infused with bacon for at least 48 hours and frozen for the same time before being double-strained, I feel the same pang.

I AM excited about their brunch menu, which relies heavily on local farms for meat, and because they brought out piping hot beignets (Grandma’s house! NOLA! ah, the memories) and the coffeemaster gave us vacuum-filtered coffee in a special thingy. A sneak peek at the upcoming brunch menu revealed some awesomeness with a Southern flair. With Bloody Marys that good, I could definitely deal with brunch here. Look for it at the earliest next weekend, but probably in two weekends.

If you tried Frank once and got heartburn, it might be worth another shot …

It’s Go Texas Week this week!

Hot on the heels of Austin Restaurant Week, we have the slightly-different Go Texas Week this week, where restaurants put together prix-fixe meals featuring ALL local (to Texas) ingredients. It’s a fun twist, and can still be a really great deal. Speaking of great deals, look for a forthcoming post on FLAVORS of Austin, a similar thing …

Anyway, the list of restaurants is here: http://www.gotexan.org/restaurantroundup/hill-country.html#austin

And then there’s also the unique spin of Go Texas Beer week at Opal Divine’s: $2.50 Texas Beers all week!

Opal Divine’s is going BIG by putting ALL Texas Beers on every tap the week of Sept 28 through Oct 2nd. Michael Parker, owner of the Opal Divine’s restaurant/bars, gave himself a Texas-sized task: to fill every tap with a Texas beer. That’s something like 37 taps! Real Ale of Blanco will have nine offerings, Austin’s own 512 will have seven, and then you’ve got your Live Oak, your Independence and so on. And they’ll be tapping a Texas cask every night at 7pm. $2.50 pints all week, with 5 percent of proceeds going to the Capital Area Food Bank.

Texas Beers on tap from
: Live Oak Brewing, 512 Brewing, Independence Brewing, Real Ale Brewing (Blanco, TX), Shiner Beers (Shiner, TX), Lone Star Beer (Ft. Worth, TX)

OPAL’S LOCATIONS:

North: Marina. 12709 Mopac at Parmer Ln. Austin, Tx 78727. (512)733-5353
Downtown: Freehouse. 700 W 6th St. Austin, Tx 78701. (512)477-3308

Perfect Weekend: Fighting,Terror, Dancing, and Football

As usual, fall weekends are jam-packed. Four things I’m most excited about:

1) Mansion of Terror

My fave haunted house from last season because it’s sort of scary but has funny twists (Danger: Hellaphant) is opening up this weekend! The Mansion of Terror is currently rated #1 in the country by Lionsgate Films and was selected as a Top 8 Haunted House in the US by The Travel Channel.

When visitors enter the Mansion of Terror, they choose either Death Asylum: Zombie Carnage or Blood Frenzy II: Reign of Blood. Death Asylum features a truly twisted take on an insane asylum that is overrun with patients who have turned into Zombies. Complete with claustrophobic passageways, mazes, padded rooms, and larger-than-life undead creatures. Visitors have to solve a puzzle to make their way through.

Blood Frenzy II: Reign of Blood is set in the decaying farmhouse of Austin’s own serial killer, Jon Eric Springwood, who has killed over 99 Central Texas men and women over the last 15 years. Visitors must endure his final victim’s painful last moments. Prepare to be baptized in blood (it washes out and they offer raincoats).

They’re also socially responsible, hosting 8 “Non-Profit Nights” where a percentage of the proceeds will be donated to local nonprofits. Schedule of Non-Profit Nights:
September 25th – Best Friends Animal Society
October 1st – Lights. Camera. Help.
October 2nd – Capital Area Food Bank
October 9th – Goodwill Industries
October 10th – Blood and Tissue Center of Central Texas
October 16th – Carinos Foundation
October 23rd – Planet Cancer
November 13th – SCARE for a CURE

$20 for both Haunted Houses. There is also a $2 off coupon available all local Birds Barbershops, Alamo Drafthouses, Goodwill and Halloween Express locations. www.mansionofterror.com

2) Fight Gone Bad

Another CrossFit competition I’m doing … this is a fundraiser too (you can still donate to me! um, I’ve only raised $20… thanks Wes!) for The Prostate Cancer Foundation and The Wounded Warrior Project. Jeremy Thiel & Lisa Bender are featured on a News 8 interview on Fight Gone Bad – watch it here.

What to expect @ Fight Gone Bad IV:
Awesome workout
Performances by Reagan High School Drum line
Live DJ
Giveaways & Raffle Prizes from local Austin businnesses
Kid’s Play area sponsored by 1379
Post Fight Gone Bad Celebration Saturday Night @ Molotov (Appetizers, Drink Specials, & a Live DJ *This is a kid-friendly event, more info here)

The event kicks off @ 8:00am @ The Long Center on the Terrace facing Auditorium Shores, 701 W. Riverside Dr (Map)

3) Dallas NiteClub is Open again!

The venerable dance hall on Burnet Road was shut down earlier this year thanks to owning the title for most DUIs leaving an establishment, a record it set by over 150%–quite a feat in college-bar-filled Austin. Nonetheless, they’re back with the cheapest drinks for miles (see aforementioned title) and free dance lessons from 6-7 on Fridays and 7-8 on Saturdays. Only open Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. http://danceatdallas.com/

4) UT v UTEP

Same tailgate info as last time. Or just walk around, people are friendly.  I’m actually going to the game this time–yay!

Boots. I freakin’ love boots.

It might get “cold” here this week thanks to an “autumnal storm,” so I’m thinking boots. Everyone else is already thinking boots around the country anyway.

Below check out my picks, all of which are perfectly appropriate for fall in Texas. Trends: booties, thigh-highs, and flat. The booties haven’t gone away, but for the love, don’t wear those peep-toe booties (obviously none are pictured). Those are a) hideous and b) defeat the purpose of a boot. Wear unique booties with special details, like the ones featured below. I have two pairs of flat suede ones like the ones pictured; maybe I can figure out a way to add a chain?

Note on thigh-high boots: I love them. But holy hell I have no idea how to wear them. Obviously a miniskirt. But that has got to be TINY in order to show off the boots. And those are expensive boots to not get a lot of wear out of. Nonetheless, this is an awesome pair for your pleasure.

This is Life in Austin Restaurant Week Picks

Austin Restaurant Week (which is really two beginning-of-the-weeks, Sept 13-16 and Sept 20-23) kicked off last night, so being the procrastinator I am, while fellow foodies headed out to Hudson’s on the Bend and other fine establishments, my handyman and I were just sitting down to choose our own adventures. We employed colored sharpies and the ARW map as we pored over the Austin Restaurant Week menus online.

First, a few general tips: reservations fill up fast, so call ASAP. But if they’re full, remember that you don’t NEED a reservation, so feel free to stop by and check on the wait. You can also eat off the regular menu at any place. The ARW website is here, but it pales in comparison to last year’s site. Why ruin a good thing? However, it’s the only place to get the menus, so you’ve gotta click it up. Most restaurants’ menus will be $35 for three courses. A few are $25. A few charge extra for special things–like filet mignon or extra sides. Doesn’t include tax, tip, or drinks. Now on to the good stuff.

Several factors in our decisions on the best restaurants for us:

  1. try new-to-us restaurants only (no Imperia, Bess, Sushi Zushi, or Piranha)
  2. don’t want a place with an awesome happy hour because we can sample their wares there (no Ruth’s Chris, Sullivan’s, or Imperia)
  3. each category must have at least 2 dishes we want so that we can share (places with sad meat generally ruled out)
  4. interesting stuff you can’t usually get for that cheap (suckers for menus with lobster)

And without further ado, our winning picks:

[Winner!] Green Pastures – http://restaurantweekaustin.com/2009/09/green-pastures/

We’re headed there tomorrow night to try lots of quail, lobster tail, rainbow trout, veggie ravioli, pecan balls, and bread pudding. My friend’s recent wedding there featured wonderful food, so here’s hoping the food is anywhere near that good. Plus, as the maid of honor I missed out on the infamous white peacocks, so here’s my chance to see them. (Yes, I realize this breaks factor #1. but the menu looks THAT GOOD) Plus, this is one of the few $25 deals, and this is a ton of delicious food for just $25/person!

If we get more time next week, we’ll try to hit up (in order):

Truluck’shttp://restaurantweekaustin.com/2009/09/trulucks-seafood-steak-and-crab/

The apps look pretty normal, but I could EVERY SINGLE ONE of the SIX entrees offered. Happy cow (Niman Ranch) and five varieties of seafood I would happily devour. Proscuitto-wrapped mahi mahi? Jonah crab claws? Pollen-encrusted seared tuna? I mean, literally, every single one of these entrees looks awesome. Choosing would be nearly impossible. Maybe if we go we should invite more people …

Eddie V’shttp://restaurantweekaustin.com/2009/09/eddie-vs-edgewater-grille-downtown/

Sort of the opposite of Truluck’s, all the apps here look outstanding: oysters with spinach and artichoke dip, Maine lobster and shrimp bisque, apple and beet salad; but the entrees look just normal. Which I’m sure, being Eddie V’s, is outstanding, but we get to be picky when we’re choosing between so many great deals.

$25 Roaring Forkhttp://restaurantweekaustin.com/2009/09/roaring-fork-stonelake/

We all know about the Food Coma I entered the last time I ate here, and my girl date STILL talks about the place. So as one of the other $25 deals, it’s surely a steal. The apps are on the boring side (smoked salmon, tortilla soup, salad) but the entrees are characteristic of the all-out nature we love about Roaring Fork: bacon-wrapped Niman Ranch (happy) tenderloin, parmesan-encrusted swordfish, and a mixed grille with sausage, ribs, pork, and chicken.

Aquarellehttp://restaurantweekaustin.com/2009/09/aquarelle/

Since we can’t pronounce most of the menu, we’ve got to assume it’s good. I’m no French-cooking-afficianado, in fact, I don’t even think I know what it means. But I do love me some mussels and gulf shrimp (an entree choice) and some beets (appetizer), so I can’t imagine there’s anything wrong with French cooking. As a downtown staple, it’s a place I’ve been wanting to try for a long time and this is a great opportunity. Plus, where else has escargot on the menu? (oh, hi Olivia. But you’re not doing Restaurant Week)

Driskill Grillhttp://restaurantweekaustin.com/2009/09/driskill-grill/

Last Restaurant Week, I heard more about Driskill Grill than any other place. I heard there was amazing food–and lots of it, with generous portions–and even better service. So I would have wanted to go to Driskill Grill regardless of its menu, which thankfully consists of a date appetizer and both local lamb and gulf snapper dishes I’ve love to try. Will it live up to March’s hype?

I’d love to hear where you guys are going, or what you thought about where you did go. Feel free to comment below, or email me at thisislifeinaustin@gmail.com if you’d like to write a full-on Guest Post!
