Austin: SHAPE Magazine Diva Dash!

SHAPE magazine, the #1 women’s active lifestyle magazine and place where I got my start in journalism, is bringing a women’s-only obstacle adventure race to Austin! I am so excited, these big magazine-sponsored events never happen in Austin!

SHAPE will hit Walter E. Long Metropolitan Park (6614 Blue Bluff Rd, Austin) on April 9 with an adventure filled obstacle race made up of running, swinging, climbing, and dashing.  The journey will be held on 3 miles of road and trail, and the course will include stimulating activities along the way. This route will challenge participant’s strength, speed and balance with activities involving water, ropes, mazes and more and will offer alternative tracks designed for beginners.

The Diva Dash is for female runners and walkers of all abilities. More than 2,000 athletes are anticipated to participate—from novice to elite. Don’t feel up to the task quite yet?  Two training plans have been created that will get participants ready to take on each obstacle. Already a pro? The training plans incorporate work outs suited for every level, one of which is a do-it-yourself training clinic developed by the fitness experts at SHAPE magazine. Training takes place twice per week at RunTex Riverside (422 W. Riverside Dr).

Each woman who crosses the finish line will receive a SHAPE Diva Dash pewter necklace, and the grand prize winner will win a trip to Aruba.  Men are welcome to join the ladies at the after party, which will be held on-site and will be a celebration of the days success with music, prize contests, and other fun activities.

The SHAPE Diva Dash race benefits GENaustin, a non-profit organization serving teenage girls throughout the state of Texas. Presenting sponsors at the race include Acura, Athleta, and Luna.

Registration is now open, so sign up with your favorite ladies at www.DivaDash.com. Prices start at $35 in advance, and participants will also have the option to register the day-of.

SO EXCITED!!!!

Aspen: TWO Extreme Mountain Mountaineering Competitions!

Power of Four Ski Mountaineering Race

Holy extreme! This event has participants covering 11,000 vertical feet of climbing and ski descents on Snowmass, Buttermilk, Aspen Highlands, and Aspen Mountain—without ever getting on a bus. Aspen has a lot of extreme events, but this is serious! It’s the first year, so it should be interesting to see how it goes!

The race begins in Snowmass Base Village at 7:15am.  How crazy is this course: skin to the top of High Alpine via Sheer Bliss and The Dikes, traverse to Hanging Valley Wall, ski down via Roberto’s and Lower Ladder, traverse from Elk Camp to West Buttermilk through the backcountry. Skin to the top of West Buttermilk and ski to the bottom of Tiehack. From Tiehack, cross the footbridge to the Aspen Recreation Center and head across Maroon Creek Road to the Five Trees chairlift to begin the climb up Aspen Highlands. Racers will go all the way to the 12,300-foot summit of Highland Bowl. Ski down the bowl, then ski through backcountry terrain to Castle Creek Road via the Congo Path. Racers cross Castle Creek Road and begin the final climb of the day up Midnight Mine Road to the Sundeck on top of Aspen Mountain. The final ski would be down Copper Bowl and Little Nell before the race ends in gondola plaza.

Organizers estimate that the fastest racers and teams will complete the course in four to five hours, while the slowest racers would take eight.

“It ties in with the brand,” SkiCo spokesman Jeff Hanle said. “We have four mountains — hit ’em all.”

Registration ends TODAY, click here for more details.

Austin: Another Free Day of Yoga Yoga

You know the annual free day of yoga (the one where I took my mom to Bikram and she hasn’t stopped going since and it’s been like 5 years?). Well the city of Austin is having “Another Free Day of Yoga” this Saturday!

“Another Free Day of Yoga is an opportunity for people who are new to yoga to try a classand for existing students to try a different style of yoga,” explains Christina Simon, Director of Center Operations at Yoga Yoga. “Every year on Labor Day, Yoga Yoga participates in theannual Free Day of Yoga citywide-event, and we see over 1,000 people in our studios. With interest in yoga on the rise, we saw the need to make this a semiannual occasion, giving more people access to the benefits of yoga.”

At five Yoga Yoga locations across the city, 56 free yoga classes will be taught, from beginner-friendly yoga classes to prenatal yoga classes to a yoga bootcamp class at 7:30am! Class schedule and Yoga Yoga location information at yogayoga.com/another-free-day-yoga.

Of course, there are tons of other studios participating too. Check out freedayofyoga.com or contact info@freedayofyoga.com.

According to the 2008 Yoga in America study, 6.9 percent or 15.8 million U.S. adults practice yoga. That’s a lot, but we need more, so get thee to a studio stat! (Click here to check out the best free podcast yoga class I’ve ever heard—it’s the closest I’ll ever some to having a private instructor at home!)

Aspen: Summit for Life Kickoff (free drinks!)

So, this is in a couple of hours. Whoops! Shoulda posted it sooner … The Chris Klug Foundation is hosting the fifth annual Aspen Summit for Life kickoff party on Thursday, Oct. 21 from 5:30-8:30p at the Hyatt Grand Aspen in the Grape Bar. Free appetizers and drinks!

Party-goers can register for the Summit for Life, an uphill race that raises awareness about organ and tissue donation on Dec. 11 (where people literally race up Aspen Mountain on foot–or on skis or skins or whatever … the guy who has won it the past couple of years does it in FORTY FIVE MINUTES. I can’t even do that in the summer!) or any of the Summit for Life weekend activities that benefit the foundation. Kahtoola is giving away Micro Spikes to the first 60 people that register for the race.

There’s also news of a new race set for Ajax. The Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club has announced the first-ever Ajax Cup on Aspen Mountain, to be held on Dec. 30 and hosted by Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell!

The invitational ski race will feature teams of eight, led by ski celebrities including race chairs Chris Davenport (whose sunglasses a very proud Vermonster now owns) and Casey Puckett, competing head-to-head for the coveted Ajax Cup trophy.

The race will be on Little Nell on Aspen Mountain. A party will follow the race at Il Mulino restaurant from 2:30-5:30p … just another winter in Aspen!
