Give Without Giving With GoodSearch

Despite what the upcoming apocolypse known as Black Friday would have you think, a new report says almost 70 percent of people will give less this holiday season. In cash-strapped times, charitable supporters are getting creative with their giving … you know how much I love giving/getting goodies with charitable ties (more posts on that coming up soon)! To tide you over, here are six ways you can “give without giving” online right now:

Shop online. GoodShop.com works with more than 2,500 retailers (including Amazon,GapTargetStaples and Macy’s) to give a percentage of almost every purchase back to the shopper’s favorite charity.  In addition, GoodShop lists more than 100,000 coupons so that shoppers can save money and do good at the same time!  GoodShop currently works with more than 102,000 charities and schools.

Search the Internet:  GoodSearch.com donates about a penny per search to the charity the user designates. It’s powered by Yahoo. Together with GoodShop, GoodSearch has raised more than $8 million for charity.

Dine out:  GoodDining.com works with more than 10,000 restaurants across the country and each time you dine, up to 6% of what you spend is donated to your favorite charity.

Redeem credit card points. You can turn unused credit card points into a charitable donation to your cause. Both American Express and Citi Card offer this program.

Volunteer: There are a handful of companies that match volunteer hours with funds. For example, Microsoft will match volunteer time at $17 an hour through its Volunteer Time Matching program. BoeingExxonIntelChevron, and Bank of America have similar programs.

Recycle your old electronics:  Send your electronics to Gazelle.com and cash generated from that will be donated to charity.

To date, GoodSearch has donated more than $8 million to over 102,000 charities and schools designated by its users.

Starbucks + Opportunity Finance Network

I recently participated in a conference call with BlogHer, Starbucks Chairman and CEO Howard Schultz, and Starbucks Global Chief Marketing Officer Annie Young-Scrivner about their new Create Jobs for USA initiative that launched yesterday. You buy this (very cute) wristband for $5 and it’s all donated to a fund at the Opportunity Finance Network for capital grants to local lenders who fund small businesses that make a difference.

starbucks wristband

Schultz says, “The question I’ve been asking myself is, ‘how can Starbucks use our scale for good?’ … the lifeblood of job creation in America has been and continues to be small businesses.”

“100% of the money we raise will go to the OFN … think of them as the United Way of community-based loan organizations in America… they will get millions of dollars in the hands of these enterprises that will start lending money to small businesses, start-up businesses, that will be a catalyst for job creation.”

“The intent here is to give the benefit of the doubt to the business and provide access to credit.”

Donations have a multiplier effect times 7 … so that for every wristband purchased, $35 can actually be lent out from OFN. The organization estimates that $20,000 creates one sustainable job. There’s no set end date for the program.

Bonus! Young-Scrivner briefly talked about women in business, giving her thoughts on what makes a woman successful in a global company like Starbucks: “Stay consistent and centered on who you really are. Work for a company that you care about. The balance between profitability and social benevolence … I think as women it’s really critical that we understand what we want, we have a map we develop for ourselves, focus on our skill set, and have good mentors inside and outside the company.”

Connecther

Like the shopping sites I’ve mentioned before, new Austin-based non-profit Connecther.org is focused on making life better for global women and children. Only Connecther.org provides collective giving and increased visibility to smaller scale 501c3 projects.

By aggregating and consolidating hundreds of women and children focused non-profit projects, Connecther provides a platform for a single donor or a donor group, such as a corporation looking for a philanthropic cause, to see over 91% of their donated dollars go directly to those in underdeveloped communities that are willing and driven to work for self-reliance. Think kiva but without loans and local.

The Connecther platform was specifically developed to use social networks to maximize giving and to create the greatest social impact for women and children in need. Local award-winning graphic and web design studio Creative Suite helped create the initiative. Rachel Clemens of Creative Suitcase says, “As a woman-owned business, and explorers of this wondrous world, we were thrilled to help bring Connecther.org to life. The opportunity for women entrepreneurs in impoverished countries to make a better life for themselves and their families is something we’re very proud to have contributed to.”

Connecther will begin with a pilot phase including non-profit partners such as:  DiscoverHope, Vanavevhu, Meca For Peace, GiveLight and Well Aware, as well as many others. Check out connecther.org to give and share!

[UPDATED] Austin: Fight Other Kinds of Cancers

[UPDATE] Local McDonald’s owner/operators raised over $10,000 to support the Komen Austin Affiliate and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) of Central Texas. A check was presented by McDonald’s Owner/Operator Allen Benton to LLS Board President Gary Thompson and Komen Austin Executive Director Christy Casey-Moore each with a check for $5,250.

Forget breast cancer awareness, what about brain cancer? Or Leukemia & Lymphoma? OK, don’t forget breast cancer awareness, but consider these other cancer-awareness and fund-raising initiatives happening around Austin this month.

MickeyD’s

Now, I’m not a proponent of McDonald’s. Perhaps you can have their coffee. Maybe a salad. Nothing else, really, would I eat there. BUT I don’t discriminate for other people, so if you enjoy a Big Mac, you might as well go on Friday and donate money to a good cause. Local owner/operators will host “Dine-In and Drive-Thru” fundraiser initiative to raise money for Austin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Central Texas.

For the third consecutive year, McDonald’s Central Texas will donate ten percent of all sales on Friday, October 14 between 11a and 2p at 68—that’s SIXTY EIGHT—area McDonald’s to the local affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® and The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) of Central Texas.

“The McDonald’s family is privileged to support the Komen Austin Affiliate and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Central Texas,” said Dan Kinney, McDonald’s Owner/Operator and president of the Central Texas McDonald’s Owner /Operator Advertising Co-op. “It’s through community efforts such as this that we’re able to do our part and help make a difference in the lives of children and adults battling cancer. One of our fellow McDonald’s owners is a breast cancer survivor so this is an especially important cause for us.”

Hawktober with Floyd’s 99

Floyd’s 99 rock n’ roll barbershops will be giving mohawks away for free every Monday during the month of October to anyone willing to sport a mohawk to help raise awareness of brain cancer. Hey, even I’ve had a Mohawk before (Lots of Elmer’s glue, and later, lots of shampoo)!

Matt Cotcher, a local brain cancer survivor, enlisted Floyd’s 99 to help organize the event. While this is the first Hawktober ever, similar events are being simultaneously organized in other cities as well. “The movement is quickly gaining traction,” says Cotcher, a former Austin sports announcer who had surgery to remove a racquetball-sized tumor wrapped around his brain stem. “By the end of the month there will be guys from New York to San Diego that will ‘rock a hawk’ in our first year.”

The American Brain Tumor Association estimates that more than 60,000 primary brain tumors will be diagnosed in 2011. Men, Movember is coming up, might as well start with Hawktober!

Pink Products

It’s officially Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which means pink products have taken over the interwebs and stores. When I donated blood, they even wrapped my arm in pink pre-wrap! It’s tough to know what products are just “pinkwashing” you and what products are actually benefitting breast cancer research, patients, or survivors. Of course, you could also argue that a small percentage is better than no percentage at all, and fully buy into the pink. Up to you.

Here’s what I like (will be updating all month):

Alternative apparel pink ribbon hoodie Alternative apparel henley

Alternative Apparel partnered with Susan G. Komen for the Cure and all Urban Outfitters stores to introduce a “Pink Ribbon” collection, featuring the brand’s fabulously comfy tees, tanks, dresses, henleys, and hoodies in a “Pink Ribbon” color way. Alternative will continue to sell its Pink Ribbon Collection online at alternativeapparel.com through the remainder of 2011, donating 10% of the retail price to Komen with a guaranteed minimum of $25,000. As part of the philanthropic partnership, Urban Outfitters has also donated $60,000 to Susan G. Komen.

Body Rock bra

Body Rock sports bra is part of The Empower ‘em Collection—each purchase enables them to donate a mastectomy bra to the American Cancer Society. This month, use code THINKPINK to get 25% off every pink item AND donate 10% to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

earrings for breast cancer products

The slightly confusing sort-of flash-sale-y but celeb-curated site Open Sky is donating $5 from every purchase through Sunday October 9th, which is pretty awesome. Patricia Vasquez chose these beautiful pink tourmaline earrings from French jewelry designer Camille Eddera. Eddera will donate 20% of proceeds to Cancer Charities of America while OpenSky will donate $5 to Cancer Schmancer.

OPI pink shatter
Pink Shatter is the newest shade in the hot Shatter collection by OPI that will support Susan G. Komen for the Cure in raising awareness of breast cancer for the fifth year in a row. Each bottle of Pink Shatter has a special pink-ribbon tag and pink cap for the cause. OPI will also be making its annual donation of $25,000 to Komen for the Cure (couldn’t find a percentage from this particular bottle).

BreatheCure Conference at Rice University

BreatheCure Conference coming October 29 to Rice University

I don’t normally write about things super-far in advance, but you might want to plan to be in Houston for this one. The First Annual BreatheCure Conference comes to Rice University Recreation and Wellness Center October 29.

The event supports the illness-to-wellness community with educational classes and lectures for participants of all ages and fitness levels to use as a means of enrichment and healing. It’s a FUNdamental day of bringing like-minded folks together in a place of healing harmony. My university is awesome.

Founded in 2007, Breathe the Cure®, is a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to bringing educational awareness to the general public about the benefits of breathing techniques, meditation, and yoga. Much of the focus is on cancer survival and recovery through these practices. The conference is also donating twenty percent of all proceeds from the conference to Pink Ribbons Project, a Houston-based nonprofit that saves lives and improves the quality of life for those touched by breast cancer. A list of the 2011 presenters is here.

Keynote Speaker Award-winning investigative food journalist Barry Estabrook, author ofTomatoland: How Modern Industrial Agriculture Destroyed Our Most Alluring Fruit, explains how tomatoes have gotten to their current tasteless, nutrient-deficient state and how we can fix the problems. Grown out of season to supply distant markets, dependent on a witch’s brew of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, and produced under some of the most abusive labor conditions in this country, the modern agribusiness tomato is a “poster child” for many of the ills facing our industrialized food system.

The 2011 BreatheCure Conference is a collaboration between Breathe the Cure® founder, yoga professional and legislative yoga advocate Jennifer Buergermeister fromJennyoga/CuraYoga and the Texas Yoga Conference, who partnered with Amy Garratt and Julie Byrd, co-founders and Yoga Studies Directors of Balance Your Body Yoga as well as BYB Pink Ribbon Recuperative Yoga. Of the first annual BTC Conference, Jennifer states, “We believe that change comes from a healthy mind, body and planet. This year’s conference supports integrative medicine, deep breathing techniques and mindfulness as a healthy lifestyle and a tool that helps alleviate many symptoms of disease.”

Registration for the 2011 BreatheCure Conference is $175 for the general public and $150 for students, teachers, and seniors. To register, visit btcconference.com/register or call 713-839-9642. Students of Rice University, UH, Baylor or UST can get a 50% discount if they enroll via email to info@breathecure.org.

The BTC Conference will be held at Rice University Recreation and Wellness Center, Saturday, October 29, 2011. Doors will open at Rice University’s Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center on Saturday at 8:30a with the first session beginning at 9. Event ends at 8p. Austin Bakes for Bastrop

I love cookies, and I love what the group Austin Bakes is doing with bake sales to support people close to home and far away (remember Austin Bakes for Japan? It raised almost $12,000). Saturday, October 1st from 10a to 2p, hundreds of bakers, bloggers, businesses, and consumers will unite for Austin Bakes for Bastrop, a bake sale fundraising event to help those affected by recent wildfires in Central Texas.

Over 80 home cooks and dozens of local businesses will be contributing baked goods at locations throughout Austin. Baked goods will include cookies, cupcakes, brownies, pies and pastries of all kinds. Several home bakers are creating Texas-themed confections for the sale, while others will be baking locally sourced, organic, vegan or gluten-free items. All funds raised will go to Austin Community Foundation’s Central Texas Wildfire Fund. Those who wish to make a gift in advance of the sale may do so at Austin Bakes for Bastrop’s secure, online giving page.

National Yoga Month

Did you know September is National Yoga Month?

Did you know you can get a full week, seven days, of free yoga at tons of studios across the country thanks to National Yoga Month?

It’s no secret that I’ve been practicing A LOT of yoga recently. I did a seven-day boot camp in Aspen that was transformative. No, I didn’t come to any life-changing realizations. No, I didn’t make any decisions. Trust me, I had plenty of realizations and decisions needing to be had, I WANTED them. But yoga, you learn through doing it, is just about doing it. Just about being. The other stuff comes with being. Being present. And it definitely does not come instantly.

Why then was my yoga week transformative? Because it made me realize how important yoga is to my health and well-being. I have previously publicly declared that I’m not yogi. But I AM. I am a yogi.

There are 10 days left to take advantage; yoga month culminates September 30th with The Time for Yoga, a global community practice.

Use the studio finder here to immediately get your yoga on. For free.
