This is my home office.

In my lofted one-bedroom apartment, space is at a premium. But I work from home, on the awesome DailyHap.com, so a home office is non-negotiable. Enter the couch + table + chairs combo that I LOVE. It has lots of light and lots of space for me to spread out my work.

It’s a great space for creating, writing, thinking, and even doing the un-fun stuff like billing.

I couldn’t have come up with the idea to share the table with the couch without Pinterest. Yay!

Operation Beach House is in full swing in my abode in Aspen, Colorado. I realize it might be a contrast to be building a beach house mantel on the mantel that sits over my real, wood-burning fireplace, but I am nothing if not a study in contrasts.

Beach pics + driftwood + happy collage = beachy mantel

I spray-painted a thrift store frame blue, then framed a Hula Hut post card in an homage to both the tropics and my beloved hometown.

Spray paint FTW! It took lots of coats because the wood soaked up the paint, but the end result is a faded-but-bright look I adore.

I’m busy setting up my home office space in preparation for the big project I’m in the middle of launching right now. Instead of a traditional desk, I wanted a giant table so I could spread projects out. I went to the Habitat Restore and picked up a $25 table, then took to it with purple spray paint.
Here are the pieces (leaf and table top, legs removed):

Unfortunately, there was a little mishap with some melting snow, so it ended up creating a really cool water-splashed look on the top of the table. With DIY, I never expect perfection and embrace the unique designs accidents give me.

Using screen + snuggie to block more snow from melting onto table while it dries … getting creative …

Badass workspace!

I have a set of (high thread count) (Ralph Lauren) sheets I love that were getting a little … off in color. In keeping with my beach house theme for the new digs, I decided to dye them bright orange—Tangerine, to be exact—to complement my pale blue-and-tan plaid bedspread.

I’m not going to lie, the process wasn’t easy. But this was more the fault of my shared washing machine (didn’t want to dye it orange), a non-working sink stopper (dye went down the drain, twice!), and me than the actual dyeing process.

I do really like the marbling effect that was a result of sink-dyeing as opposed to the all-over color the washing machine would have given it.
All in all, dyeing is pretty easy and pretty cheap! RIT dye is available everywhere and at just $2.99/box, you really can’t go wrong updating your sheets with a lil color.

I’ve moved into this new place and am in serious decorating mode. I’m slowly but surely turning this pad into my favorite spot with all my favorite things. Watch out, this blog is getting DIY crazy over the next few weeks!

I wanted to paint the walls with inspirational quotes, but wasn’t sure I wanted to deal with the hassle of painting over them when I move out, so I came up with this temporary solution: write my inspirational quotes on a sheet! My mom had an extra butter yellow twin sheet, so I used that, bought fabric markers at WalMart, and went to town. I am so thrilled with my new wall.

You could also do this behind your bed instead of a headboard …

There are trifectas of awesomeness like the upcoming Charlie’s Angels remake with Minka Kelly (who didn’t love Lyla Garrity on Friday Night Lights when she picked bad boy Riggins to love?), then there are trifectas of getting things done, like Austinites Tolly Moseley, Candace Carlisle, and Cory Ryan—three ladies who know how to throw a party to tickle Austin’s fancy.
This Thursday, your fancy just might be a lil’ craftin’ escapade. Grab your gals and call it the perfect Girls Night.

Aviary will host the evening and will feature drink specials for guests. $10 admission gets you a drink along with beads/supplies from Legendary Beads.
Thursday, September 22, 6-9 pm / 2110 S. Lamar / aviarylounge.com

How adorable/awesome are these?

… maybe Colorado’s is a little less awesome. But there is a Denver Omlette, so it makes sense. John Holcomb is, either way, a genius. Here for the rest of the fiddy states and to order prints (just $30!).
[Thanks DailyCandy for the heads up!]

CrossFit has brought me into contact with some pretty interesting, awesome people. Mel Joulwan is one of those people, and her delightful husband Dave–who, I must confess, I barely know personally but feel like I know from Mel’s blog and his constant support of her at CrossFit and other competitive eventes–is starting a class to help other artists of all kinds learn to be more creative despite the constraints of everyday life. He already blogs away the internet like only a genius creative can at Create More … check it out.
He says:
It’s an 7 week program on how we make art and become better people while living life. A group of 4 to 6 artists meet with a facilitator once a week for 90 minutes. Additionally, there’s a once-a-week email check-in from the facilitator.
We’ll read through Fearless Creating by Dr. Eric Maisel. This will serve as a loose agenda, but we’ll likely veer to meet the interests of the group.
Together, we’ll get better at creating during the lifetime we have. Additionally, we’ll get to know each other, share experiences and resources, and potentially work together. It will change the way you approach your work.
I say: Dude rocks, he’s even a certified creativity coach (they have those?), and his resume is impressive to boot. For $250, he could help you toward the next The Great American Novel, the Picasso hiding in your soul, or the mad jams just dying to drum forth from your capable hands.
Class starts June 21, so sign up soon. More details on Create More Class here.
