Visiting Loudoun County, DC’s Wine Country

I recently took a fabulous trip to Loudoun [pronounce Lough-done] County, Virginia, otherwise known as DC’s Wine Country (teaser was here). Three days of wining and dining made for one very happy traveler! I’ll let the pictures speak for the highlights of the trip.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Resources:

Lansdowne Resort - Big, lush resort property with nice rooms, lots of amenities, and tons of golf course land. Health club is open to golf members so is more substantial than most resorts, with scheduled group fitness classes and yoga too.

Patowmack Farm - A working farm, wedding destination, and Wednesday-Sunday dinner restaurant with Chef Christopher Edwards at the helm.

Catoctin Creek Distilling - Organic local whiskey and other spirits.

Middleburg Country Inn - A B&B in Middleburg with lots of charm—and four-poster beds in every room!

Home Farm Store - All-happy, all-local butcher shop started by Sandy Lerner, former owner of Urban Decay cosmetics and Cisco Systems.

National Sporting Museum & Library - Devoted entirely to sporting, a non-lending library and really neat museum.

Red Fox Inn – Historic B&B and restaurant with lots of Civil War history.

Boxwood Winery – No winery tours (by appt) but tasting room in Middleburg.

Chrysalis Vineyards - Focused on Norton grapes, very fun tasting experience.

8 Chains North- Fun winery with live music, brother Ben Renshaw makes all the wines. Tried and liked an Otium Dornfelder 2009, the Dornfelder grape is apparently pretty rare so this was unique.

Mom’s Apple Pie - One of the most famous Virginia companies, whose blackberry pie has been named the best in the nation, owner/baker/sister-of-Ben Avis is really open and friendly. Amazing pumpkin muffins.

On The Potomac - One of Landsdowne’s restaurants, eclectic and innovative drinks and food, led by a team of young managers: the GM & bar master is 25 while Chef Wes Rosati is 31.

Tarara Winery - My fave visit featured amazing wines and even more amazing conversation with winemaker Jordan Harris about the realities of an agriculture-based business and how Tarara is experimenting with their grapes to make unusual wines.

The Wine Kitchen - One of Leesburg’s most popular dining spots, the lovely interior is designed to look like a kitchen—down to the walls in the bathroom, which have a bathtub painted to mimic the feeling of being in someone’s home.

Battle of Ball’s Bluff - Relatively unimportant battle in the Civil War that the Confederates won, however 1,000 reenactors and 2,000 spectators came to watch the 150-year reenactment!

Clyde’s Willow Creek Farm - A giant, local’s favorite restaurant that sources many farm-to-table ingredients. The most creative calamari I’ve ever had, and delicious everything else as well.

Teaser: Get Lost in Loudoun

I mentioned in Feel Good Friday that I went off on a press trip, to Loudoun County, Virginia. While I work on compiling all the photos and notes from the trip, you can check out the fun new web show Loudoun produced called Get Lost in Loudoun.

It’s funny, the majority of the cast is from Austin. They did a nationwide casting call but the most talent came from our fair city, so the actors are really experiencing what you might!

Leggings. Revisited. Again.

I don’t understand how there is so much confusion over leggings. They are not hard. In fact, that is the whole point of leggings—to be easy to wear, easy to style. It is said that the Aspen uniform in the winter is skinny lululemon yoga pants (NO visible logos), a tunic sweater, riding boots, a big coat, and sassy scarf. Easy, stylish, and comfy.

AND YET.

“Tights are not pants” is the number four search term driving traffic to my blog, after #1 “leggings.” And here I thought I was writing about Austin, Aspen, and life. Apparently, I am only to write about pants or not-pants, as the case may be.

BECAUSE:

I continue to see shirts that are too short with leggings.

I continue to see shoes that are inappropriate (you can see skin between legging and shoe).

I continue to see leggings that are too thin.

I continue to see leggings that are just plain ugly (zebra, acid wash, and shredded all fall into this category).

I continue to see leggings that do not look like pants.

I think there may be some confusion between leggings and tights. Perhaps I need to clarify? Leggings are pants. TIGHTS ARE NOT PANTS (as the google searches leading here will tell you, although I do not understand why someone must google that. Wouldn’t the more appropriate google be “are tights pants?” to which I would hope google would simply reply “NO” sans search results, although that wouldn’t send me any traffic).

Leggings are thick, suck you in, and look good. Tights are something you add under skirts or dresses (you KNOW how I feel about shorts in the winter or at night); while they can be thick, suck you in, and look good, they ARE NOT PANTS. If you bought them folded over that little cardboard doohickey in the section next to the underwear, THEY ARE NOT PANTS. If you bought them in a pack of two, THEY ARE NOT PANTS. If you can see through them at all, in any way, in any light, THEY ARE NOT PANTS.

Leggings and tights can both be creative and fun, but should you go that route, they need to be paired with SIMPLE accessories. There are also some “creative,” “fun” patterns you should avoid: lace, tie-dyed, and the aforementioned just plain ugly styles. Here’s a hall of shame collection for you to enjoy, along with one example of what you should be wearing.

The gate agent in DC who after I tweeted that I supermanned made the same reference and called me superwoman. And then gave me a badass seat with extra legroom.

Caitlin (my fb gf) and Erik shuttling me everywhere, indulging in pumpkin lattes, and continuously extolling DC’s virtues. Oh + their couch.

Shoes dubbed “winter Roxys!” (cheaper than winter Sperrys…)

That Klout thinks I’m influential about airports, margaritas, bikram yoga, and yoga, in that order. Come to think of it, that does sort of describe my life … wait no it doesn’t!

ummmm .... foster care??

I guess the first snowfall was nice and something I should be thankful for. Maybe just my new skis. I’m not quite ready for the snow.

View from my porch

That being sick allowed me to stay indoors and watch the entire first season of Laguna Beach without feeling guilty.

Connecther

Like the shopping sites I’ve mentioned before, new Austin-based non-profit Connecther.org is focused on making life better for global women and children. Only Connecther.org provides collective giving and increased visibility to smaller scale 501c3 projects.

By aggregating and consolidating hundreds of women and children focused non-profit projects, Connecther provides a platform for a single donor or a donor group, such as a corporation looking for a philanthropic cause, to see over 91% of their donated dollars go directly to those in underdeveloped communities that are willing and driven to work for self-reliance. Think kiva but without loans and local.

The Connecther platform was specifically developed to use social networks to maximize giving and to create the greatest social impact for women and children in need. Local award-winning graphic and web design studio Creative Suite helped create the initiative. Rachel Clemens of Creative Suitcase says, “As a woman-owned business, and explorers of this wondrous world, we were thrilled to help bring Connecther.org to life. The opportunity for women entrepreneurs in impoverished countries to make a better life for themselves and their families is something we’re very proud to have contributed to.”

Connecther will begin with a pilot phase including non-profit partners such as:  DiscoverHope, Vanavevhu, Meca For Peace, GiveLight and Well Aware, as well as many others. Check out connecther.org to give and share!

PARAPROSDOKIANS

It’s been awhile since I got an email forward worth sharing. Email fwd from my mom:

Fw: Paraprosdokians

PARAPROSDOKIANS

I had to look up “paraprosdokian”. Here is the definition:
“Figure of speech in which the latter part of a sentence or phrase is surprising or unexpected; frequently used in a humorous situation.”
“Where there’s a will, I want to be in it,” is a type of paraprosdokian.

Ok, so now enjoy!

1. Do not argue with an idiot. He will drag you down to his level and beat you with experience.

2. The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But it’s still on my list.

3. Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

4. If I agreed with you, we’d both be wrong.

5. We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public.

6. War does not determine who is right – only who is left.

7. Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.

8. Evening news is where they begin with ‘Good Evening,’ and then proceed to tell you why it isn’t.

9. To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism. To steal from many is research.

10. A bus station is where a bus stops. A train station is where a train stops. On my desk, I have a work station.

11. I thought I wanted a career. Turns out I just wanted paychecks.

12. Whenever I fill out an application, in the part that says, ‘In case of emergency, notify:’ I put ‘DOCTOR.’

13. I didn’t say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

14. Women will never be equal to men until they can walk down the street with a bald head and a beer gut, and still think they are sexy.

15. Behind every successful man is his woman. Behind the fall of a successful man is usually another woman.

16. A clear conscience is the sign of a fuzzy memory.

17. I asked God for a bike, but I know God doesn’t work that way. So I stole a bike and asked for forgiveness.

18. You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice.

19. Money can’t buy happiness, but it sure makes misery easier to live with.

20. There’s a fine line between cuddling and holding someone down so they can’t get away.

21. I used to be indecisive. Now I’m not so sure.

22. You’re never too old to learn something stupid.

23. To be sure of hitting the target, shoot first and call whatever you hit the target.

24. Nostalgia isn’t what it used to be.

25. Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

26. Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian any more than standing in a garage makes you a car.

27. A diplomat is someone who tells you to go to hell in such a way that you look forward to the trip.

28. Hospitality is making your guests feel at home even when you wish they were.

29. I always take life with a grain of salt. Plus a slice of lemon, and a shot of tequila.

30. When tempted to fight fire with fire, remember that the Fire Department usually uses water.

Opening, Centerpiece and Closing Films

The new comedy Butter will be this year’s Opening Night film. Butter is an appetizing comedy set in Iowa, the heartland of America, about competition at its most cut-throat. Butter surveys the raw ambition of Laura Pickler (Jennifer Garner), the wife of Bob Pickler (Ty Burrell), Iowa’s long-reigning champion butter carver.  For 15 years, Laura has relished her high-profile role as the beautiful, loyal helpmate to her affable, artistically gifted husband.  But when Bob is pressured to retire and allow someone else a chance at glory, an indignant Laura decides to enter the competition herself. Thursday, October 20, 7p, Paramount Theater.

The Centerpiece film is Jeff Who Lives At Home with co-writer/director Jay Duplass in attendance. Living in his mother’s basement without a job, Jeff  (Jason Segel) can’t even bring himself to leave the house to run some simple errands.  Instead, he sits around hoping that destiny will fall straight into his lap.  After interpreting a strange coincidence as a sign that he my have finally discovered his fate, Jeff finds himself on a strange journey with his estranged brother that will take them both to some very interesting places.  Jason Segel and Ed Helms give their best performances yet in a film that will move you in ways you may not expect. Saturday, October 22, 6:30p, Paramount Theater.

Closing Night will feature Union Square with actress Mira Sorvino as a special guest at the screening. Union Square is a reluctant reunion of two estranged sisters. One is on the verge of marriage; the other is on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Both struggle with truths they’re hiding from each other – and from themselves. Jenny (Tammy Blanchard) has rejected her tumultuous family and cut off communication, seeking a more ordered life far from her roots in the Bronx. And she’s almost ready to commit to her longtime fiancé when her sister Lucy (Mira Sorvino) – the personification of all that Jenny has been trying to flee – surprises her at a critical time. Lucy and Jenny’s combustible reunion brings both of them to unforeseen places, shattering and reconstructing the worlds they have both carefully constructed. Thursday, October 27, 8p, Paramount Theater.

James Franco

James Franco will be attending a special regional premiere for his new film, Sal, at the Austin Film Festival on October 23rd. He’ll introduce the film and then participate in a Q&A after. Franco co-wrote and directed Sal, which chronicles the final hours of actor Sal Mineo. He was the teen star of Rebel Without a Cause whose career began to fade before his life was cut tragically short. The film is not a traditional biopic; rather, it takes the viewer on an intimate journey through the very last day of Mineo’s life. On February 12, 1976, Mineo was on the verge of returning to the limelight after years of heartbreaking setbacks. He was set to direct his first feature film and was only days away from opening in a critically-acclaimed play in San Francisco. However, this promising new future was erased by a lone attacker and a senseless crime. In Sal, the audience experiences a bright young man’s highs and lows, orchestrated by the glimmer of celebrity and the cruel truths of the film industry. Sunday, October 23, noon, Paramount Theater.

Buffy

Ok, not really, but David Boreanaz will present the award for Outstanding Television Writer to “BONES” creator Hart Hanson at the annual Awards Luncheon. He will also participate in a special presentation of an episode of “BONES” with creator Hart Hanson on October 22nd at the Austin Convention Center. A Q&A will follow.

The Inevitable Austin-Aspen Connection

Johnny Depp will be the first-ever recipient of the “Extraordinary Contribution to Film – Acting” Award. He will also be on hand for screenings of his new film The Rum Diary (based on the novel by Hunter S. Thompson, a long-time Aspen resident) and a retrospective of Edward Scissorhands with Caroline Thompson.

The Rum Diary (which opens in theaters nationwide October 28th) will show at the Paramount Theatre on Oct. 21st at 7p  and Depp will do a Q&A following the film. Joining him for the Q&A will be The Rum Diarywriter/director Bruce Robinson.

The Rum Diary tells the increasingly unhinged story of itinerant journalist Paul Kemp (Johnny Depp). Tiring of the noise and madness of New York and the crushing conventions of late Eisenhower-era America, Kemp travels to the pristine island of Puerto Rico to write for a local newspaper, The San Juan Star, run by downtrodden editor Lotterman (Richard Jenkins). Adopting the rum-soaked life of the island, Paul soon becomes obsessed with Chenault (Amber Heard), the wildly attractive Connecticut-born fiancée of Sanderson (Aaron Eckhart). Sanderson, a businessman involved in shady property development deals, is one of a growing number of American entrepreneurs who are determined to convert Puerto Rico into a capitalist paradise in service of the wealthy. When Kemp is recruited by Sanderson to write favorably about his latest unsavory scheme, the journalist is presented with a choice: to use his words for the corrupt businessmen’s financial benefit, or use them to take them down.

With fellow award-recipient and screenwriter Caroline Thompson, Depp will also introduce a special retrospective screening of Edward Scissorhands at 9:45pm at the Paramount Theatre. Thompson will do a Q&A following the film.

I think sometimes Austin forgets its an arts town as much as a music town … the Austin Film Festival is one of the premier film festivals in the nation; take advantage of all the screenings! More info on everything + scheds (films Oct. 20-27): austinfilmfestival.com

Now there’s a new one, for awesome products that somehow make the world a better place. You KNOW what a sucker I am for those! Enter Pure Citizen.

Not only do purchases support these inspiring companies, but members have the option to save a little less and donate the difference to a featured non-profit. 20% of members have used this feature.

Here are some of my faves on sale right now:

Red Blue Stripey sarong towel

I am totally obsessed with the whole sarong-towel-blanket thing. Perhaps I am preparing for some future days on a beach. Perhaps I am just dreaming.

Navy white check ikat dupatta

How cute is this? Scarf, wrap, whatever.

Slate nail polish

I'm always searching for healthy, safe nail polish. It's terrifying when you think of all the chemicals you're mainlining into your nailbed!

Luster plum faux pony high heels

The pants are hideous. The faux pony purple peep toes are hot, however.
