Ben & Jerry’s

Last week, I got the incredible opportunity to join Ben & Jerry’s Millennial Advisory Board. We flew out to Vermont for three days of training, talking, and LOTS of eating ice cream. Here are a few photos:

We got to make our own ice cream! My flavor? A Firefly-inspired Sweet Tea Ice Cream with Limoncello swirl and chunks of peach and lemon button cookie.

My new fave flavor: Red Velvet Cake!

As if I didn’t already love Ben & Jerry’s, this experience cemented their awesomeness. The people were warm, welcoming, and so obviously happy with their jobs. The ice cream was obviously amazing, AND I learned that they use free-ranging cows from nearby St. Albans Co-op … happy ice cream! What an amazing experience.

Rent the Runway Review (hint: I love it)

If you’re not a Gossip Girl watcher, you might not have seen Rent the Runway in action (Juliet uses it to look like she actually has money to buy designer clothes). Think Jennifer Hudson using Bag Borrow Steal from Sex & The City. No? Maybe I’ll just ‘splain myself: Rent the Runway is a dress-lending site where you browse for dresses by any number of factors—style, occasion, color—and they mail you the dress. You rent it for 4 days, then return in a prepaid padded envelope. SUPER EASY!

I tried it for my college roomie’s wedding last weekend. I was in the wedding, so I had that covered with a splashy maid of honor dress, but I needed something for the rehearsal dinner.

I ended up ordering 2 dresses, afraid that while I loved the first, it wasn’t going to be flattering on me. Dresses range from $40+, but it’s only $25 to rent a second style. They also send you two sizes, if you want, to make sure you’ll get a dress that fits.

I was right; the yellow dress wasn’t in fact flattering on me (something about long legs and a short waist?). But luckily, the floral Yumi Kim was super cute!

we do too – it looks adorable! RT @lifeinaustin I loooove my @RentTheRunwaydress!! http://t.co/ln6wfyv

Everything about my Rent the Runway experience was great. The package arrived a day early, with all four dresses (2 sizes of each) zipped into a garment bag, perfect for immediate travel. The dress was awesome, and I felt glamorous and pretty during the rehearsal dinner—and in all the photos!

Sunday, I simply slipped the dresses back into the mailer and dropped it in a mailbox. The experience was flawless; I honestly cannot wait for an excuse to use Rent the Runway again!

Austin: Cincominder App

Surely you remember CINCO Vodka, the “Austin’s Neighbor”-based, limestone-filtered, “martini-drinker’s” vodka I wrote about here? In one of the most ridiculously awesome ideas ever, CINCO has introduced a Cincominder app for the iphone. What does this app do?

Why, the app reminds fans when it’s five o’clock—the perfect time to enjoy a great martini!—with the signature sound of five shakes from a martini shaker. The app also will provide GPS information to let you know the nearest Cinco provider, whether it’s a bar, restaurant, hotel, nightclub, country club, or liquor store.

Cincominder drinking app

That’s right. The Cincominder app will help you get drunk at precisely 5pm. It also offers vodka enthusiasts a number of original recipes from Cinco’s Director of Cincology, such as the Cincotini, Love Potion #5, Mild Sedative, Yellow Submarine, Shiatzu and Excalibur.

Luckily, Cincominder also offers a “call a taxi” feature designed to assist you in calling the nearest Taxi to your location.

They’ve thought of everything. Download the free app from the iTunes app store immediately.

A Home for My Jewels

I have been going crazy in my loft apartment trying to find a great, space-saving way to store but display my jewelry. My earrings benefited greatly from a picture frame holder (pictured below), but my necklaces, bracelets, and scarves are more trouble. Finally, I found the perfect solution!

Naked jewelry holder

It may not look like much, but check out how awesome it is when full of my baubles:

The basket? Perfect for bracelets.

Austin & Aspen: Courtney—Get This—Sames

Samesies! How many times have you said that comparing two things that are the, well, same? I love drawing parallels between Austin and Aspen, so you can imagine how tickled I was to get an email from Courtney SAMES, photographer from Austin, who was headed to Aspen to spend the summer. Samesies!

Turns out, Courtney is not only a fellow A-A member (erm…), but she’s a stellar photographer with an eye for the wiggly, giggly bunch (puppies and babies, natch). Read on for a brief interview with a recent Aspen transplant.

1. So, Austin and Aspen, eh? How’d you come up with that combo?

Portraiture is a big part of my business and it’s difficult to get jobs in the Texas summer heat.  Fortunately, I had a family member living in Aspen who encouraged me to stay the summer and try out Aspen.  I jumped at the opportunity and have teamed up with Twinkle on Hopkins Avenue, an Aspen children’s store, to display and promote my work.  Like Austin – without the heat – Aspen lends itself to beautiful photos.  And I have discovered that Aspen has a LOT of Texan visitors, enabling me to make two connections with one click of the lens.

2. How’d you get into photography?

I began shooting photography many moons ago in high school.  My high school photography teacher, Ralph Howell, was an incredible resource and instructor.  He taught us different photography techniques and the importance of getting involved in the photo community at large.  Back then I was shooting film and developing my prints in a darkroom.  Nowadays I’m learning all there is to know in the digital photography world.

3. What’s your favorite type of photo to shoot?

I started with photojournalism and went on to portraits (children, engagements and family).  I have branched out into commercial work for various print media and musical festivals.  I’m really trying to diversify at this point.  A lot of photographers avoid “kids and dogs” but I truly love working with children and pets.  They are unscripted and I get some of my best images from the spontaneous interactions.

4. So far, is it better to shoot photos in Aspen or Austin?

Honestly both Austin and Aspen are beautiful.  The only drawback to Texas is the summer heat.  It is difficult to shoot beautiful environmental portraits when the subjects are sweating through their clothing.  And being that Aspen is small, there is less competition. But I’m a Texas girl at heart.

5. What’s the coolest picture you’ve ever taken?

Bridge Lardeo Mexico US

One of my most memorable photo series emerged from the International Bridge Ceremony held on the bridge between Laredo, Texas and Nuevo Laredo, Mexico.  It’s an historic and symbolic event between two interchangeable communities – two cities, two countries, two cultures—coming together.  This rarely happens in today’s world and is in fact being threatened by border issues.   You can see the series and more information on the event itself at courtsames.wordpress.com.

6. What’s the craziest photo story you have?

Last week I was hired to shoot a family’s hot air balloon ride in Snowmass, Colorado (outside of Aspen).  I thankfully didn’t ride in the balloon (deathly afraid of heights) but rode in the car with the family’s younger children who weren’t old enough to ride the balloon.  It was exciting chasing the balloon in the car and shooting pictures of the balloon as it drifted along the valley.  When the balloon landed I was able to capture a beautiful family portrait highlighted by a colorful hot air balloon, picturesque mountains and soft morning light.
