Lisse Leggings + A Summer How-to-Wear

Leggings … that most-lambasted, favored by many a starlet, pants-substitute. It took me a little while to come around to the legging (and even longer to accept jeggings as part of my life). As summer approaches, what, erm, leg does the legging have to stand on?

See, summer leggings are what caused my initial legging fears to begin with. Cropped leggings are NOT flattering. They cut off the leg and make you appear shorter and chunkier, which no woman in her right mind wants. Don’t throw a dress/skirt/long shirt that might be a dress over leggings and think it makes you look chic in the summer. Stick to long leggings, will ya?

Bad leggings:

Bad summer leggings

In the summer, leggings can still be worn at night with summer-weight boots and flowy tops. They can also be worn with heels or flats if you have the legs.

Good leggings:

good summer leggings

See how they all have on longer, flowier tops, leggings, and heels? This is a win.

Winter-weight leggings are not going to be comfy in the summer, so find a cotton (or cotton-spandex) pair that still has an appropriate thickness. If you bend your knee and see skin, any skin, it’s not appropriately thick.

Suggestion: I recently tried a new line of “control top” leggings with a 5″ waistband designed to eliminate muffin top, which can be an issue with more comfortable low-rise leggings. Lisse Leggings manage to be lightweight but sturdy, suck-you-in but not uncomfortable, and chic. The legging is 86% cotton / 14% spandex with an inner control panel of
86% polyester / 14% spandex.

Lisse legging

Leggings should be comfy and smoking hot, and Lisse Leggings manage to do just that. I consider the pair above to be my “dress” leggings, while my lululemons are my “everyday” leggings. Again, no crops unless you’re working out. We want to keep our legs looking long and lean, here, ladies!

Take 10 Beverages: Get Your Sleep!

If there are two things I love and believe in in this world, they are sleep and young entrepreneurs. Ok, maybe there are a few more things, like love, integrity, and faith, but to make the point I’m about to make about the new Take 10 Beverages, I had to do a little selective selecting. TAKE 10™ To Relax and TAKE 10™ to Sleep are 2-ounce shots of relief from stress and trouble falling asleep. Each 2-ounce bottle retails for $2.99 at grocery and convenience stores and Take10Beverages.com.TAKE 10 beverages
Both styles combine natural herbs including Kava Root, Rose Hips, Passionflower, and Chamomile with vitamins B6, B12 and other holistic ingredients with a juice flavor that’s zero calorie. TAKE 10 to Relax tastes pleasantly of white grape and is indeed very relaxing. It’s relaxing like how you feel after the first half-glass of wine before you’re even tipsy.

Three young entrepreneurs founded the company, and say, “There are other dietary supplements, but we believe TAKE 10™ is the first to develop a blend of natural ingredients in a two-ounce shot that actually delivers on the ‘calming’ premise.”
Sleep Bottle

Take 10 to Sleep is equally effective, knocking me out immediately. It has a blackberry flavor that’s pleasant but not overwhelming. Both do taste a little like artificial sweetener, but then, I’m really sensitive to that taste. I would definitely use these again, and suggest the TAKE 10 to Sleep for those nights you want to go to bed early because you have a 6am flight but aren’t exactly tired (that’s when I tried it, and it worked!).

Do I need to remind you why sleep is so important? Sleep makes you smarter, prettier, and healthier. You need 7-9 hours. I don’t care how adapted you think you are, you need 7-9 hours of sleep every single night. JUST DO IT! How does sleep make you smarter, prettier, and healthier? Sleep improves cognitive function, skin and hair appearance, and bodily functions. It can even make you lose weight (or prevent you from losing weight if you don’t get enough). If you need sleep, TAKE 10 to Sleep is an excellent helper.

Austin: For Japan

A couple of really cool events coming up benefit Japan. Here’s a rundown:

Wine for the Win

TRIO will donate 50% of the total revenue of all wine bottles sold now through Wednesday, March 30 to the Red Cross to aid in Japan’s emergency relief efforts. The wine promotion applies to every bottle of wine sold in TRIO.

Chef de Cuisine Todd Duplechan was scheduled to visit Japan March 21 through April 2, 2011 for a 10-day “Taste of Texas in Tokyo” restaurant event at Four Seasons Tokyo at Marunouchi. The event was cancelled after the earthquake, so rather than send Todd, the restaurant has committed to send money to aid in the relief efforts instead.

Cookies (and more) for Caring

On Saturday, April 2 from 10am to 2pm, hundreds of bakers, bloggers, businesses, and consumers will unite for Austin Bakes for Japan, a bake sale fundraising event.  Over 70 home cooks and dozens of local bakeries will be contributing baked goods at locations throughout Austin with proceeds going to AmeriCares work in Japan.

Austin Bakes for Japan

There are 5 Austin Bakes for Japan locations:

Downtown: Woof Gang Bakery Austin, 1204 N. Lamar Blvd., Austin, TX 78703 (10am-2pm)

North Central: Foreign & Domestic, 306 E. 53rd Street, Austin, TX 78751 (10am-2pm)

South: Hotel San Jose, 1316 South Congress Avenue, Austin, TX 78704 (10am-2pm)

East: Nomad Bar, 1213 Corona Drive, Austin, TX 78723 (10am-2pm)

West: Austin Bakes for Japan + Community Block Party; Shops at Mira Vista, 2785 Bee Cave Road, Suites 336 & 341, Austin, 78746 (10am-5pm)

Baked goods will include Japanese-themed cake pops, homemade pop tarts, classic chocolate brownies, cookies of all kinds, and more. Among the homemade offerings will be locally sourced, organic, vegan and gluten-free items. In addition, customers may purchase gourmet pastries that have been donated by some of Austin’s finest professional bakers.

All funds raised at the bake sale will go to AmeriCares, a non-profit organization committed to providing emergency relief to survivors of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. All baked goods will be sold by donation, so buyers can pay as much as they like.

Interested in providing baked goods and/or volunteering to help with the bake sales?? Contact Kathryn Hutchison at austingastronomist@gmail.com.

SXSW Musings

I am not the first or last person to muse on this year’s SXSW festival, all 11 days of it. But here’s my take: this year was unlike any other year. Wah wah wah, that’s what everyone always says. BUT this year there was an undeniable uptick in numbers: 20,000 interactive registrants instead of the usual 10,000; CNN and Pepsi instead of startups and fledglings.

I found that this year, the interactive portion of the festival was less about meeting people and making connections and more about partying—which, it’s worth noting, is usually how I feel about the music portion. But it’s a bummer of a shift when you’re interested in the interactive bit. It was the first year I’d ever said, maybe I should have bought a badge for interactive.

Like it or not, this year was definitely a tipping point. What will next year be like?

The music portion was as party-rific as ever, with major players in town this year … another sign the fest is bigger than ever. I didn’t attend film, but heavyweights were out and about; and music brought some of the biggest names in the biz to our fair city. The biggest:

Daytime:

The Alternative Apparel Lounge: Moby, Duran Duran, Duff McKagan, Linda Perry, American Idol runner-up Crystal Bowersox, Dirty Vegas, Bowling for Soup, and Jamie Burke.

Express Clothing Lounge: Chromeo, Skylar Grey (duetted with Enimem at Grammys), B.o.B, Jamie Burke and Diplo. I also sneakily got my hair cut here by the fabulous Vinnie of Proper Barbers LA, my “brother.”

Fast Company Lounge: Just wanted to point out that marketing works. I snagged a free copy of Fast Company magazine, which I’d never read, read it, loved it, and subscribed. So there.

Nighttime:

Red Bull Thre3style DJs: Z-Trip, DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ QBert, Switch, Mick Boogie, DJ M-Squared and D-JR, and De La Soul. Surprise guest LL Cool J, who hasn’t performed live in years as he pursues an acting career, rocked and proved he’s still got it. LOVE! I snapped this pic from the pit:

LL cool J sxsw

Perez Hilton’s One Night in Austin: What used to be the biggest party in town brought Kids of 88, Oh Land, Zowie, The Pretty Reckless (yep, that’s Gossip Girl Taylor Momsen’s band), Selah Sue, Liz Phair, DJ MNDR, Dirty Vegas, Frankmusik, NERVO, Mia Moretti and Caitlin Moe.

Vevo at Seaholm: By far, the talk of the town was the Vevo Party at Seaholm Power Plant, which was impossible to get into but if you did, you would see Kanye, Jay-Z, John Legend, Kid Cudi, Mos Def, Pusha T, Fonzworth Bentley, and Bon Iver singer Justin Vernon. Kanye performed more than he has in quite some time, though he didn’t take the stage til 2:30am. Diddy and Beyonce were reportedly in the audience, as were Brooklyn Decker and Andy Roddick.

With those names here for music, SXSW has tipped from indie fest to commercial giant. Rap isn’t indie, kids.

Austin: Haddington’s. Go For Drinks. [updated]

[UPDATE: There's a new Executive Chef: James Corwell, a 25-year restaurant veteran, who will be focusing on lighter dishes that honor the traditions of American tavern cuisine. The lighter, bistro-style dishes with some European influence will draw inspiration from seasonal produce and local proteins while also remaining true to the restaurant’s celebrated concept. Haddingtons favorites like hearty game meats, toast pots and rillets will remain staples. I can't wait to visit the revamped restaurant!]

haddington's menu

Haddington’s, which had already developed a strong following in Austin just a few weeks after its launch, beckoned on a recent sunny day. I’ve heard most about the deliciousness of the drinks, but I’m sad to report that I didn’t imbibe on this day.

The patio made for most excellent people-watching, next door and across the street from Sandy’s Walton’s and Bess, respectively, a nice vantage point on West Sixth.

I ordered the $14 burger + $2 for bacon. All happy meat, local. The waitress, who was a sweetheart, promised this would be the juiciest burger I’d ever eaten.

haddington's burger

Haddington's inside burger

For me, the burger was WAY TOO fatty. Like chunks of fat were ground up in the beef, to the point where I physically removed one such chunk from my mouth. That is gross. It was juicy, to be sure, but the texture was chewy and lumpy, and I was not a fan. (My current fave? Either Second’s or 24 Diner’s)

Haddongton's Trout Salad

My companion had the trout salad, which she liked a lot. It looked a little small to me for $12, and who puts potato salad on trout salad?

I think Haddington’s is an odd cross between English fare (which I don’t generally like to begin with) and gourmand, making it a foodie playground but a regular-person oddity.

For this reason, I recommend Haddington’s for drinks, even without having tried them, because of the great reviews I’ve heard and the legendary drinksligner Bill Norris (formerly of FINO) at the helm of the inventive menu.

Austin’s singular rustic American tavern, Haddingtons is located on West Sixth Street in the heart of the downtown restaurant & bar scene. http://www.thehaddington.com

[Updated Date Change] Austin: Revamped Austin Restaurant Week + App!

The sixth season of Austin Restaurant week is upon us, and it might be lucky season six: new this year is the addition of brunch, wine pairings, gluten free options, the first bi-annual Austin Restaurant Awards, and smartphone app!

April 10-13 and April 17- 20, over 75 A-list restaurants serve up stellar prix fixe three-course dinners ($25 $35),  lunches ($10-$15), and (new!) brunch ($15-$20).

To help navigate, graphic designer Bart Kibbe of Rival Creative and Austin-based Big Momma Apps created a smartphone app. Austin Restaurant Week Executive Director and Founder Tyler Perkins says, “We looked at what we thought would activate more people with Austin Restaurant Week, and an app was a no-brainer. We are very excited to be going digital.” Diners will also be able to create their own profiles,  invite friends via forwarded invitations,  book reservations, read reviews, read menus, and map out locations for all of the participating restaurants.

To conclude this flavorful week, the city’s favorite chefs, restaurants, and restaurant owners will be honored at The First Annual Austin Restaurant Awards on May 8.

For reservations (if you already made ‘em, you need to change them), a complete list of restaurants, and the chance to win gift certificates onFacebook and Twitter, visit www.restaurantweekaustin.com.

Dude Brah, Check Out Thrillist Rewards

Dude, if I were a dude, I’d love thrillist. I continue to receive and even occasionally read the man-focused newsletter because it is interesting and does always manage to have the scoop on what’s hot, even if it is written in frat-brohan prose.

The man mecca just introduced a “rewards” program like groupon on steroids, uppers, and booze all at once. While they say it’s deals for your city, for now it’s just local NYC deals, but they are insane ones: chi-chi restaurant openings, lots of beer tastings, off-menu specials, or a strip and strip (steak at a strip club). In case you haven’t already signed up for Thrillist Rewards, here’s the link: http://thrl.st/hQrhIO.

Even the New York Times is getting in on the action, click here to read their coverage.
