Let’s Talk About Jeggings

[12/21/10: UPDATEIn the most recently compiled NPD research, sales of jeggings in the U.S. rose by 103 percent and it is women between the ages of 12 and 29 that account for the largest share of those purchases. "Jeggings have grown in popularity over the last 12 to 18 months as the skinny jean trend gained momentum and an even tighter denim style was desired," observed Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst.]

I have to amend my previous diatribes against jeggings. See, even I thought they were leggings made to look like jeans. This is not always the case–though where it is the case, my resolution that you should avoid them at all costs still stands. See, the real jeggings are a marriage of leggings and jeans: an infusion of softness and comfort into the styling (pockets front and back, waistband, button, zipper) of a jean. And those, friends, are A-OK with me. For example:

Jeggings are OK

The difference? The Bad Use of Jeg example has no actual pockets, waistband, or zipper. It is a legging moonlighting as a jean. On the other hand, the skinnies on the left are simply comfy, stretchy, flattering (sucks you in!) jeans.

So there you have it. I officially approve of (some) jeggings. Aunt Donnie, are you reading?

  1. Yes, I am reading your jeggings article and maybe I will try on a pair once the holidays are over and I lose a few lbs. On the other hand, maybe that is another topic – should women age 50+ stay away from jeggings?

  2. where do you buy your jeggings?

    • I still only have 1 pair of jeggings, I bought them at Nordstrom Rack. Friends have also recommended Last Call. It seems higher-end designers do jeggings better, so I’d recommend (and have seen great jegging examples from) any these brands: Calvin Klein, Paige, Joe’s Jeans, DKNY, and Rich & Skinny.
