Austin: New Year’s Eve Start to Finish

Ah, the start of a new year. If you don’t have plans already, don’t fret, Austin is totally a cool town to be plan-less in. Aspen, not so much. Where did my Caribou Club membership card run off to? Anyway, here are my suggestions:

Pre-Party: From 4-7pm, let Lovely Austin Boutique help you get ready for your big night out … $10 airbrush makeovers and eyelash application from award winning makeup artist Lecia Harkins with Beauty on the Go, plus release the stress of the holidays with $10 chair massages and complimentary cocktails.

Eat: The Carillon features Chef Josh Watkins’ New Years Champagne Paired Dinners: Nine Courses, $90; Seven Courses, $75; Five Courses, $65. Seating available 6-10pm. Some of the best food around at totally reasonable prices for food and booze.

For more NYE restaurants, click here for the Statesman’s list (with an egregious example of apostrophe abuse)

Go Out (Never Pay Cover!): Now get this. This is life in Austin & Aspen synchronicities NEVER END! Skip silly sixth and hit up Gibson on South Lamar, which is turning into a winter wonderland with 30 tons of real snow! [Sidenote: I will BE IN 30 tons of real snow. In the real mountains.] This Ski Lodge party includes complimentary commemorative ski caps, appetizers from Out There Catering, festive cocktails, music, dancing, and a champagne toast to ring in 2011.

No fancy cocktail dresses or tuxedos for this party … don your comfy and fabulous ski attire–let me tell you, bibs are sexy. Ski bibs. Not food bibs.

All for a good cause, the bash benefits The Trail Foundation. Parking available. Tickets at frontgatetickets.com

MORE MORE MORE Deal Sites!

Can you even keep up? Over the holidays, my mom turned me on to two more sites–MorgansDeals and TheLunchDeal.com, plus I just heard about CrowdSavings.com.

I’m going to totally nerd out on you (again) about these flash-sale sites. The things is, they’re awesome. Yes. But they’re a really, really interesting product of our unique place in financial history–no one has any money, but everyone is used to spending it, so they can buy these half-off deals and save money while getting to enjoy their same lifestyle–and it’s intersecting the social media storm plus running into the thrill of the chase/hunt/sale, the rush customers get when they get a “Steal!”.

And like my post (in July of 2009) after post (LivingSocial) after post after post, post, post, and post reveals, there is no end in sight to the new sites–some with unique niches, like TheLunchDeal.com, some as general as hyperlocal (ha), like CrowdSavings.com.

I’m certainly not complaining, as I’ve shared with you guys before that not only have I used and loved the deals sites, I have gotten some great credit for referrals–thanks for signing up via my links!

The second half of this infographic from Web Analytics World is far more interesting than the first, so scroll down.

Merry Christmas! DO Good

I don’t care how you do good, but you need to do it. Smiling at people, holding the door for someone, carrying groceries … it’s the little things. But if you are looking for a place to donate money this season, I have two places. Both work primarily with kids.

Do Good: Debra

I got an email from Daily Candy with a picture so compelling I clicked through to the site. On the DEBRA site I saw these two boys’ pictures and they reached out and grabbed me through my computer screen:

They’re precious, precious children who can’t have normal lives because of Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a rare genetic skin disease that causes the skin to be so fragile that the slightest friction can cause severe blistering—inside and outside the body. Severe forms of EB cause patients to live with constant pain and scarring. The worst forms of EB lead to eventual disfigurement, disability and often early death. There is no cure. The only treatment for EB is daily wound care and bandaging.

1 out of every 50,000 live births in the United States affected by EB. With skin as fragile as a butterfly wing, EB patients are dubbed “Butterfly Children.” On the outside physical wounds prevent them from normal daily activities enjoyed by other children. Debra of America is the nonprofit dedicated to research and providing help to patients and their families.

Do Good: Fresh Air Fund

Summer camp helped shape me as a person and instill in me more self-confidence than I ever imagined. I went for 6 years as a camper and worked for 3 years as a counselor at Camp Olympia in East Texas. It was life-changing.

Think about the inner-city kids who live in NYC in high-rises (“concrete jungle where dreams are made of …”) and have no access to grass, much less the acres of horse and bike trails, lakes, and soccer fields of my youth. Whether it’s a two-week trip to the country to visit a volunteer host family, or a fun-filled and educational stay at one of the fund camps, the Fresh Air programs make for unforgettable memories for those kids – and open a world of new friendships and fresh possibilities. Fresh Air children are boys and girls, 6 to 18 years old, who live in New York City.

What do Fresh Air children enjoy?

  • Playing in the backyard
  • Laughing in the sunshine
  • Catching fireflies
  • Riding bicycles
  • Learning to swim
  • Running barefoot through the grass
  • Gazing at the stars on moonlit nights
  • Building sandcastles
  • Making new friends
  • Simple pleasures of life away from the inner-city

Christmas Must-Watch: Chimney Intruder! LOL!

“He’s climbing in your chimney, snatchin’ your cookies up–tryin’ to eat ‘em! So yall need to hide your gifts, hide your trees, hide your gifts, hide your trees …”

“Santa ain’t my ho-ho-ho-ho-ho-homie!”

OMG. This is hilarious. Antoine Dodson is awesome.

Austin: Get Olivia to Cater

Yes, one of my fave restaurants in Austin is now catering for Christmas!

This is James. He is neat.

In what he describes as an effort to forge a deeper connection with his clientele while bringing the “local is better” message home, Chef James Holmes of Olivia (one of my top ten must-dos in Austin) has launched an in-home catering service.

Chef Holmes will be partnering with his wife Cristina to customize guests’ menus according to their exact specification. Sample menus will be provided on the restaurant’s website,  www.olivia-austin.com. Let’s be honest, it MIGHT be too late for them to cook up Christmas for you, but it’s worth a call! Or start thinking New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day, your birthday, your wedding, a Sunday …

Let’s Talk About Jeggings

[12/21/10: UPDATEIn the most recently compiled NPD research, sales of jeggings in the U.S. rose by 103 percent and it is women between the ages of 12 and 29 that account for the largest share of those purchases. "Jeggings have grown in popularity over the last 12 to 18 months as the skinny jean trend gained momentum and an even tighter denim style was desired," observed Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst.]

I have to amend my previous diatribes against jeggings. See, even I thought they were leggings made to look like jeans. This is not always the case–though where it is the case, my resolution that you should avoid them at all costs still stands. See, the real jeggings are a marriage of leggings and jeans: an infusion of softness and comfort into the styling (pockets front and back, waistband, button, zipper) of a jean. And those, friends, are A-OK with me. For example:

Jeggings are OK

Jeggings are OK by lifeinaustin

The difference? The Bad Use of Jeg example has no actual pockets, waistband, or zipper. It is a legging moonlighting as a jean. On the other hand, the skinnies on the left are simply comfy, stretchy, flattering (sucks you in!) jeans.

So there you have it. I officially approve of (some) jeggings. Aunt Donnie, are you reading?

Austin: Buenos Aires Cafe

Chicken and gnocchi at Buenos Aires Cafe

Oops. I ate my whole dinner before I could take a pic!

I have a foodie friend who has been RAVING about Buenos Aires Cafe for months, admonishing me with disbelief that I haven’t visited. I went for lunch a little while ago, and finally rounded up the fam, grabbed my restaurant.com discount certificate, and headed to the east Sixth hotspot for dinner.

Perhaps the best thing about Buenos Aires? All the meat is local and free-range. So I can eat anything on the menu! Yahoo!

We started with empanadas–absolutely delicious. I like the carne picante–spicy beef–best. I don’t care for the spinach one much, perhaps because it pales in flavor comparison to the carne picante. But it’s still good. The crust is flaky and not too thick, and the fillings are hearty.

I split the gnocchi sampler (four types!) and the chicken with my aunt. Normally I don’t do chicken at restaurants because it’s kinda boring and I don’t love it and I can make it at home (though I cannot touch raw chicken, so my chicken is limited to that which I can remove from a plastic package by cutting a slit in the package and squeezing the chicken out, which is also gross, but less gross than touching raw chicken). But this chicken was amazing, full of flavor, and tender. My chicken is never tender (but I already talked about my fear of raw chicken).

The gnocchi was also delicious, perfect texture and loads of flavor. I can’t remember all four flavors (was I in a food coma or what?) but pumpkin was definitely  a fave. Then again, we know I love all things pumpkin. The spinach, pictured, was also delicious.

We didn’t try any of the desserts, though said foodie friend has brought me the Cuatros Leches cake before and it is almost to-die-for. We, however, headed to Berry Austin

Bottom line? I will be back to Buenos Aires for more!!
