Austin: ZombieBall at Seaholm for HALLOWEEN!

ZombieBall. Is what you should do for Halloween. It’s pretty cheap for a spooky night at Seaholm Power Plant!

Musical lineup includes: Roky Erikson, The White Ghost Shivers, PONG, Killa Dilla, DJ Manny and Rion King.

At midnight don’t miss The Waltz of the Forbidden Flesh; a Haunte’d Couture fashion show and mini opera that has a community of artists led by Cameron Jordan Artistry, and The Dirty Rotten Cabaret, featuring performers from The Blue Man Group and Cirque Du Soleil.

Doors from 8pm to 2am. Advance tickets $20, $30 at the door and $75 for VIP.

Do it! I’ll be there, being Santana, the Cheerio from Glee. Except sluttier because my flyaway cheerleading skirt is made for someone in high school, which I am not.

Austin: New Restaurant backspace means pizza

I get a lot of press releases, and a lot of food-related press release (something about loving to eat …?). Anyway, a lot of times I save them until I can go visit the restaurant in question, using the info to write a photo-filled blog post about what I liked and didn’t. Rarely do I get a press release, immediately want to post the thing in its entirety, and do so. This might be a this is life in austin (&aspen!) first. But read the following press release and tell me you don’t want to go eat some backspace pizza RIGHT. NOW. Even you paleos. [Emphasis is mine. If you're a skimmer...]

the backspace: Put away your passport. Cancel your flight to Italy. Naples is coming to Austin. (October 27, 2010) Austin, TX — Inspired by the legendary pizzerias of Naples, Chef-Owner Shawn Cirkiel announces his newest restaurant, the backspace, serving authentic Neapolitan pizza and artisanal antipasti. Riding a wave of popularity around the globe, Neapolitan pizza even had a starring role in this summer’s blockbuster, “Eat, Pray, Love,” in which Julia Roberts gleefully devours a classic Naples pie.
Opening mid-November, the backspace will bring an authentic slice of Italy to downtown Austin. “I want to make food that has a sense of place,” Cirkiel says. “Reminiscent of food and travel experiences, but uniquely Austin.” Hip, casual and affordable, the backspace will offer a selection of pizzas, antipasti, salads and desserts – all meant for sharing. The star will be the Neapolitan pizza, known for its unique thin, chewy crust. Imported Italian “00” flour gives the dough its special lightness and lift, while baking it in a wood-fired oven gives it the desired crispy, charred crust.

The centerpiece of the backspace is its $12,000 Forni Cirigliano wood-fired pizza oven, custom-made and shipped over from Naples. The only one like it in Austin, its red clay dome heats to 900 degrees and bakes a perfect pizza in just 90 seconds. The backspace will offer seven Neapolitan-style pizzas, including classics like the Margherita and marinara, plus specialty pies like smoked ricotta topped with arugula.

A rotating selection of hot and cold antipasti will also be offered, such as creamy cannellini bean spread, homemade meatballs and ocean-fresh baked clams. For dessert, Italian favorites like tiramisu and budino pudding will be served in whimsical glass jars. The all-Italian wine list will feature 40 bottles, with almost half offered by the glass. On draft will be Moretti Italian beer.

Cirkiel shopped the globe for the finest ingredients, starting with two essentials of Neapolitan pizza: sweet Italian San Marzano tomatoes for the sauce and feathery Italian “00” flour for the dough. He sourced artisanal salami from Salumi Artisan Cured Meats of Seattle and Fra’ Mani Handcrafted Salumi out of the Bay Area in California; and Speck (a smoked prosciutto) from La Quercia in Iowa.

Closer to home, he found fresh cheese from Mozzarella Company in Dallas, ricotta from Wateroak Farm in Bryan, greens from Bluebonnet Hydroponics in Schertz, and arugula from Wood Duck Farm just north of Houston. Some ingredients, like sausage, will be made in-house.

Also gracing the backspace menu is espresso from Austin’s Cuvée Coffee. Cuvée’s Meritage blend, a Northern Italian-style espresso with new American characteristics, makes for a distinctive and delightful sipping espresso, and is the ideal base for a traditional cappucino. “I think our approach to espresso, along with Shawn Cirkiel’s affinity for the flavor, make Cuvée Coffee the perfect fit,” says Mike McKim, Cuvée Coffee founder and CEO. “This also helps backspace establish an espresso program that equals the level of quality of everything else they do.”

Easy and urban, the backspace seats just 30 diners, half at tables and the rest around the convivial bar. Local designers Michael Hsu and Kasey McCarty, who also designed Cirkiel’s parkside restaurant, restored the historic 130-year-old building to its original luster. A century of dirt and dust were removed to reveal original 16-foot tin ceilings, Austin brick walls and picture windows. Decoration has been kept to a minimum, allowing the building’s antique beauty to take center stage. A few flourishes have been added, an eclectic mix of Old World and new, like rustic flooring, gothic hanging lanterns and stained-glass windows on the south-facing wall.

Located just off Austin’s famous Sixth Street, the backspace sits behind Cirkiel’s acclaimed parkside restaurant, named by “Texas Monthly” magazine as one of the “Top 10 Best New Restaurants” of 2009. “Bon Appétit” magazine crowned parkside one of the “Hot 10 New American Taverns” in 2009. The “Los Angeles Times,” “Cooks Illustrated,” “American Way,” “Spirit,” and almost every local and regional publication have recognized Cirkiel.

The backspace is located at 507 San Jacinto Blvd., near the corner of East Sixth Street. For more information about the backspace call 512.474.9899 or visit www.backspace-austin.com. Valet parking is available. Operating hours are Wednesday through Sunday, 5 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Thoughts? Must I immediately beg for a sample until the restaurant opens in the ambiguous mid-November time frame? Will you go here pre-downtown-partying? Perhaps post?

Austin: Grand Opening of Dancers Shape TODAY!

Dancers Shape opens TODAY in the recently completed mixed-use project at 5350 Burnet Road (by the Hat Creek that was the Arby’s), Dancers Shape is founded by former Radio City Rockette and UT Alum Jennifer McCamish, who developed her signature Dancers Shape class, combining modified elements from all forms of exercise that dancers use to maintain their shape and fitness, including ballet, yoga, Pilates, and traditional circuit training.

Dancers Shape class

I cannot wait to try it! I mean, you’ve gotta trust a former ROCKETTE, right?

Other classes will include non-traditional Pilates, yoga and dance-inspired stretching techniques designed to strengthen, tone and sculpt the body. These movements are incorporated with the principle of overload, interval training, and polished off with mindful movement and joint stabilization to achieve maximum results in the least amount of time in any of the Dancers Shape classes, all of which aim to create lean, flexible muscles.

Like the uber-popular Barre3 or Physique 57 classes utilized by celebs, Dancers Shape also uses a ballet barre and a wood sprung floor.

Dancers Shape Austin studio

Grand Opening specials last through December 31, 2010 and include $30 unlimited classes for a week or $100 unlimited classes for a month. Learn more at www.dancersshape.com!

I woke up this morning to this:

But then …

First Snow in Aspen 2010

10:00am

I thought, Wow! That’s a lot of snow!

BUT THEN …

11:30am

And we’re STILL going, people.

1pm snow in aspen 2010

1:00pm

And then we took the puppy out for a run on the rugby field over by Clark’s …

Snow on the rugby field in Aspen

Rugby Field

So it’s already snowed 3 inches this morning, with another 2 to 4 inches coming today, another 3 to 5 possible tonight, and another 2 inches of snow tomorrow. Winter has arrived, and I’ve never been around to see her arrival, until now. It’s crazy.

Austin: REALLY Fun Stuff This Weekend!

CuervoGames pic

CuervoGames

Holy sign-me-up! The CuervoGames are coming to Austin. What are the CuervoGames? Exactly what you’d think … tequila-fueled Cuervo-themed American Gladiators-style competition with food, music and more.  Teams of four can compete in the Barrel Roll, where competitors climb a Mayan Pyramid to capture a series of flags at the top, the Waterfall Climb, where teams scale a 20-foot rock climbing wall as they’re drenched by rushing water, the Highwire Harvest, where they test agave farming skills 30 feet in the air, or in the Margarita Madness, a messy race against the clock to make the ultimate cocktail. Cuervo’s “Ride the Lime” offers an on-site challenge (think mechanical bull) and FREE CuervoGames gear as they cheer on their favorite teams.  The event will also feature a FREE performance by the Old 97’s.

Think that sounds awesome? The winning team will earn a FREE trip to Las Vegas on Halloween weekend for the CuervoGames National Finals.

Now that is awesome. For more info/to pre-register a team, visit Cuervo’s Facebook page.

Saturday, Cross streets of W. 4th and Guadalupe St, 4p-11p, complete schedule on Facebook.

Austin Beer Week

The first Austin Beer Week, a week-long celebration of craft beer and the craft beer community, starts this Sunday, Oct. 24, and lasts through next weekend, Saturday, Oct. 30. Check out the website for a complete, jam-packed schedule of tastings, food and movie pairings, multi-course dinners, beer education, socials, contests, and some Keepin’ it Austin off-the-wall events. Seriously, I can’t do the events justice. GO to www.AustinBeerWeek.com and pick some beer fest fun! (OK fine, I will recommend the Inglorious Basterds screening at the Alamo with German-style Live Oak beer)

Austin Unscripted

The Austin Unscripted documentary project first contacted me via twitter–gotta love that–and once I found out it’s designed to capture Austinites’ thoughts about what it really means to keep Austin weird in a time of rapid growth and development, of course I was down. Sure, it’s sponsored by the historic preservation people, whom I sometimes disagree with when they encroach on personal property rights, but in general I’m down for talking Austin.

More details here: http://www.preservationnation.org/austinunscripted

Wow, more shopping/deal sites!

Yo, did you guys know about SteepandCheap.com? Because I sure didn’t, but apparently everyone else within 1,000 vertical feet of snow did. It flashes a new item every 30 minutes or until it sells out, whichever comes first, and its got tons of mountain-y gear like skis, accessories, clothes, hiking gear, shoes, packs, camping stuff, you think REI and they have it.

Also new to my life are Left Lane Sports and 118 Boardshop, both “invite-only” shopping sites more akin to RueLaLa, ideeli, or Gilt but with less frequent sales that sit on the site longer. They also focus on the outdoorsy stuff, though 118 Boardshop is a skate-culture shop.

You know what else is cool? My first ski boots:

They go really well with my hot pink skis. OF COURSE I got hot pink skis!!

Aspen: Summit for Life Kickoff (free drinks!)

So, this is in a couple of hours. Whoops! Shoulda posted it sooner … The Chris Klug Foundation is hosting the fifth annual Aspen Summit for Life kickoff party on Thursday, Oct. 21 from 5:30-8:30p at the Hyatt Grand Aspen in the Grape Bar. Free appetizers and drinks!

Party-goers can register for the Summit for Life, an uphill race that raises awareness about organ and tissue donation on Dec. 11 (where people literally race up Aspen Mountain on foot–or on skis or skins or whatever … the guy who has won it the past couple of years does it in FORTY FIVE MINUTES. I can’t even do that in the summer!) or any of the Summit for Life weekend activities that benefit the foundation. Kahtoola is giving away Micro Spikes to the first 60 people that register for the race.

There’s also news of a new race set for Ajax. The Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club has announced the first-ever Ajax Cup on Aspen Mountain, to be held on Dec. 30 and hosted by Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell!

The invitational ski race will feature teams of eight, led by ski celebrities including race chairs Chris Davenport (whose sunglasses a very proud Vermonster now owns) and Casey Puckett, competing head-to-head for the coveted Ajax Cup trophy.

The race will be on Little Nell on Aspen Mountain. A party will follow the race at Il Mulino restaurant from 2:30-5:30p … just another winter in Aspen!
