Austin: Memorial Day Weekend’s What to Do

FareCompare had me write a Guest Post on what to do for Memorial Day Weekend. Part of it is excerpted below, and I’ve got two more shindigs added to the bottom of the list:

Memorial Day weekend in Austin means one thing: the lake. Austin’s hot summers call for long days spent in and on the water, and Memorial Day is the official unofficial kickoff to boating season. Most of the revelers will take to Lake Travis, where Devil’s Cove is wall-to-wall boats and nary a shirt is in sight, because the city’s in-town lake, Lake Austin, usually bans personal watercraft.

Boat

Hop on a party barge, like the one thrown by Austin Sports & Social Club. Rent a boat from Just for Fun–make reservations in advance. Or trailer your boat down if you’re road-tripping, there are plenty of public-access boat ramps.

Eat

All that time in the sun is sure to make you hungry, and Austin has no shortage of lakefront eateries. On Lake Travis, boat in to the newly-revamped Ski Shores and grab a legendary burger, or hit the landmark Oasis, though know that you’re there for the view and margaritas, not the food. On Lake Austin, try an Austintini at Hula Hut, where wait times can be over 2 hours but it’s more than worth it, or Abel’s on the Lake (they’re neighbors). Any of these spots is worth seeing even if you’re not planning on getting your feet wet.

At Night

Wanna see the sights but not down for $2 jaegerbombs at Latitude30 with the college kids? Walk the (in)famous East Sixth Street to get to Alamo Drafthouse at the Ritz, a movie theatre-restaurant where you can get a bucket of beer–or Jack and Coke–with your giant bowl of popcorn. If you’re still up for going out, be sure to check out Austin’s Kung Fu Saloon on West Sixth Street, the kind of bar that would only make it in Austin. It offers free skee ball–naturally.

Deep in the Heart of Texas

Austin may fool you into thinking its not like the rest of Texas most of the time, but hit up the Broken Spoke to be reminded that you are, in fact, in the Republic of Texas. Don boots you snagged at Allen’s Boots on the drag or Heritage Boots downtown, button up your pearl snap, and learn the two-step. It’s easy.

More Austin faves you need to check out:

Fancy dinner: Olivia, Uchi, Wink, or TRIO
Outside: Run Lady Bird Lake, throw a frisbee in Zilker Park, or walk South Congress
Snacks: Cupcakes at SugarMama’s Bakeshop or daily special from Odd Duck Trailer

All Weekend: Wine & Music Festival at the Domain

http://www.austinwineandmusicfestival.com/tickets.html

Sunday: $15 all-you-can-eat Crawfish at Gibson

And you KNOW you can eat a LOT of crawfish.

File it under WTF: Memorial Day Weekend Saturday

I can’t do this event justice, so I’m copy-pasting the email (original colors, spelling, and formatting preserved. Literal copy-paste here). If you can figure out what it means, probably means you’re cool enough to attend?

In the BACONATOR storyline, frynet was originally installed into the U.S. military mainfryer to control the national gravy supply. Shortly afterward it gained sentience and the panicking high ranking skilets, realizing the extent of its abilities, attempted to pull the plug. Frynet perceived the attempt to deactivate it as an attack and came to the conclusion that all of the outdated household appliances would attempt to destroy it. To defend itself, it came to one conclusion: Humanity must be baconated.

Before it could be deactivated, Frynet launched The Thingamabots under its command at Russia, to which Russia responded in kind by fryering as many of its breakfast sausages as possible back at the United States and its allies. As a result of the food fight, over three billion humans were killed in just minutes. Governments around the world collapsed and anarchy descended.

Aspen: Plastics Make Food & Wine Possible?

Honestly, this is probably the number one thing people said to me as I started talking about being in Aspen for part of the summer — “Oh, are you going to Food & Wine?”

PMIP Aricle Image[1]

Well, no. Hopefully we can spring for a locals’ tasting, or at least hit up a cool afterparty. Unless, of course, I win this Take the Aspen Challenge! Plastics Make It Possible ticket giveaway. [Insert Graduate joke here]

Just answer: “How do you use plastics to create your favorite foods or memorable parties?” Post a comment about your favorite tools and techniques for using plastic for food preparation, storage, or entertaining for a chance to win two passes to the FOOD & WINE Classic in Aspen, June 18-20 AND $500!

The contest closes at 11:59 p.m. MT on June 3, and the winner will be announced at 5:00 p.m. MT on June 4. Contest rules and restrictions here.

Aspen: Lance’s Bike Classic September 26

Like me, the man in the yellow jersey calls both Aspen and Austin home. While Austin may hold his Mellow Johnny’s and Juan Pelota establishments, Aspen is now home to his Wapiyapi Classic, a 25-mile or 50-mile bike race with a $200 fundraising requirement.

What’s a Wapiyapi?

Wapiyapi is the Lakota Sioux word for “healing”. But what is it for Lance? A summer camp for kids with cancer and their families.

According to Camp Wapiyapi:

In 1998, a group of University of Colorado Medical students established Camp Wapiyapi to provide at no cost, a respite for children with cancer and their families. Each week-long camp session offered a safe and nurturing environment to allow the children and their siblings the natural freedoms of childhood. Through participation in a variety of group activities, campers learned that they did not face their challenges alone.

In 2008, Wapiyapi expanded to include Family Retreats. These retreats offer families that have recently received a diagnosis an environment of understanding, comfort, and guidance to help them through this difficult time.

Register HERE, though the event isn’t til Sept 26, registration fees go up by $5 (gasp!) after August 1.

Austin: El Arbol = Awesome!

Fourscore and several years ago I was slated to do some PR for a sweet new restaurant opening up right in my ‘hood. It went so far as me being at menu tastings. Alas, other things got in the way (including some delayed city permitting), and I got to experience the glory that is El Arbol with everyone else–when it opened.

The three-story treehouse is lovely, all white laquer and mod while somehow retaining a comfortable, neighborhood atmosphere. Perhaps the most important thing about the physical location is the giant, tri-level patio. Few places in Austin boast such sizable patios, and patios are a part of our very soul as a city.

Then, so too are delicious and creative drinks, a low-price-but-high-quality wine list, and $3 empanadas that taste like doughy heaven.

We sampled a ton of food, most of it seafood because their meat unfortunately is not free-range, though the brined chicken is and is delicious. It might have been my favorite.

But let’s begin at the beginning, where there was a delicious bread basket with sauces, and there was also ceviche, melted provolone queso fundido, and seafood salad, all of which were good, though the ceviche wasn’t as good as I remembered from my chef’s tastings. Could have been an off-night, could have been a different recipe.

For dinner, we had mussels and snapper, the aforementioned chicken, and the one non-free-ranger had a delicious, giant steak. We shared sides, the gnocchi was a fave.

We agreed with all of the reviews we read–there are very few vegetarian options. But do you really go to an Argentine steakhouse for the vegetarian food? We also agreed with many other reviewers that both the wine list and wine service are top-notch. The ponytail-ed sommelier spent plenty of time at our table and made a stunning recommendation that easily ended up being one of the best bottles of wine I’ve ever had.

The service too, was impeccable, as our waitress was friendly, upbeat, and prompt. She also strongly encouraged us to get dessert, and it was incredible–light, if a chocolate dessert can be called such–and a perfect cap without being too much.

Which is a pretty good description of El Arbol, actually–perfect without being too much. It’s upscale, but not too much. Indulgent, but not too much. A neighborhood hangout, but not too much (this is no Cain & Abel’s, kids).

Not bad for walking distance to my house.

Aspen: Burgers at Belly Up

You’d think it wouldn’t be that hard to find grass-fed, free-range beef and chicken here in Aspen, but it has been a little bit challenging. Surprise then that Belly Up, Aspen’s premiere live music venue, is a purveyor of grass-fed beef and free-range chicken. They even have a buffalo chicken pizza! (You may or may not know that I consider free-range buffalo chicken tenders the holy grail of free-range chicken. I had a nasty Plucker’s habit in college, probably an order of buffalo chicken tenders a week for a whole semester, but since I’ve gone free-range only I’ve only found them ONCE, at a brewery called Hopwerks in Portland, OR, and they were amazing.)

However, this fateful night I went for the burger, a 1/2-pound, 2-patty pile of deliciousness even without the bun. BUT oh the bun! It was doughy and delicious, crisp with a soft center (I only know this because the Vermonster ate it and told me, OF COURSE). And the accompanying sweet potato fries were divine–long, thin, crunchy, with just enough salt.

I’m surprised more people don’t eat at Belly Up, if my burger was any indication of food quality. It WAS $15 for a burger and fries, but it IS also Aspen. I mean, it cost me $12 for a buffalo burger and sweet potato fries at 520 Grill, and they’re supposed to be cheap (had to get the buffalo to get free range, had to pay $2.25 to get sweet potato fries instead of regular).

… bottom line? Food at Belly Up is GOOD!

Austin: Saturday East Sixth Barhop for the Birds

Saturday from 7-9p at the East Sixth Birds Barbershop, there’s an art show-ish party featuring photos of happy clients over the past few months as they walked out of the salon–looking their best, natch. To show off their handiwork, Birds is having this partay with Cruz Tequila, a dancefloor mixtape by Tackybuns, and tasty snacks by Cheer Up Charlie’s.
At 9p, head out the door to Shangri-La and Cheer Up Charlie’s across the street, where Birds is buying the first round. Both will be displaying art from the campaign too. Tonight’s gonna be an east sixth night …

Aspen: 50% off Kenichi TONIGHT and 520 Grill Opens!

Austinites, I know we have one too, but this ONLY applies to the ASPEN Kenichi. From EatAspen Blog:

Kenichi Sushi is hosting a fund raiser for Mountain Rescue (you know the crew that may just save your butt) Thursday night May 20th. Make any dollar donation to Mountain Rescue and you get 50% off your food, sushi, and sake.

—-

Down the road (because everything is down the road in Aspen, as downtown is about 6 blocks squared), the brand-new 520 Grill is opening today too, in the old Noodles by Kenichi (ha?!) spot at 520 E. Durant.

520 Grill will offer half-pound, hand-crafted burgers using buffalo, beef, or turkey (with bacon ground INTO the meat on bacon burgers!!), and hot dogs (all-beef kosher franks and turkey dogs), plus not-your-average salads like kale-and-quinoa and chipotle Caesar. Fresh-cut fries and homemade potato chips round out the new menu, created by two young locals with experience all over Aspen.

The pair plan to serve lunch and dinner daily from 11a to 7p. Hopefully the hours will extend soon, 7p doesn’t seem very late!

Aspen Times article here.
