Calorie-Free Cupcake Cuteness

Austinite Jennifer Ross spent well over a year testing cupcake recipes, interviewing bakery owners and collaborating with a professional baker to create her own confection, a debut novel: THE ICING ON THE CUPCAKE.

This is the story of a young woman’s decision to leave everything she knows behind and start a new and delicious life for herself, after being jilted by her fiancé who was deemed the most eligible bachelor in Dallas. Before long she opens a gorgeous bakery called The Icing on the Cupcake and realizes that finding herself first is much sweeter than finding a man.

Complete with decadent cupcake recipes, THE ICING ON THE CUPCAKE is a fun summer read about a young woman experimenting with innovative ingredients—and with a life beyond her wildest dreams. You can enjoy the cupcake sans the calories!

South Austin Sushi: Yanagi

GREAT GREAT sushi. Terrible service.

It’s a shame. I’ve heard a lot of people complain about service in Austin restaurants, but I don’t usually share their sentiments. However, Yanagi’s service was bad, and worse than that, when confronted about it, they acted clueless as to what went wrong. (Clue: ordered appetizer sea bass at the beginning of the meal, it came out 30 minutes after our second round of rolls, and it wasn’t very good.) But let’s not dwell on how bad the service was and instead feast our eyes on the deliciousness that was hands down the best riceless roll I have ever eaten:

Sexy Roll: Tuna, salmon, white fish, crabmeat, and vegetables wrapped with cucumber (no rice), $11.95

We ordered some other great rolls, included a baked snapper which I think was called a flaming Hawaiian roll:

We ordered four sushi rolls, and each was very different, with great combinations of flavors and very fresh fish. The seaweed salad was huge and delicious, and the meal started off with free miso soup. Score on all food fronts!

For South Austinites, Yanagi is a sweet addition for close-to-home sushi. It’s not cheap, but its fish is definitely worth the price. However, the service makes me hesitant to make the trek down.

Easter Pet Parade

Cool event I’ve never heard of but apparently has been going on 11 years … the Easter pet parade on S Congress benefitting Austin Pets Alive! (http://www.austinpetsalive.org) and paying tribute to animal lover Lyndon Lambert (http://georgesf.com/).

The parade will kick off at Noon at the corner of Congress and Annie Street and end at JO’s Coffee (1300 South Congress).

To walk in the parade, with your pet in costume, register at Jo’s on S. Congress in advance ($10) or register by 11:30a on Saturday ($15) at the corner of Congress and Annie.

Cool new Easter tradition!
