Austin Restaurant Week picks

Austin Restaurant Week can be intimidating … there are so many good restaurants to try! Basically, RARE media gets all the restaurants together to host fixed-price meals for two weeks, Sunday through Wednesday. This year, it’s February 28th – March 3rd and March 7th – 10th.

My top ten picks:

    Baby, you got options:

  1. Chinatown on Mopac: Lunch $15 / Dinner $35
So much food. For a lunch, you get soup, a sushi roll, a piece of sushi, and entree, and rice. Wow! For dinner, you choose an app, Peking Duck or Boston Live Lobster, AND an entree and dessert. I can’t even imagine eating this much food … wait, yes I can, and it’d be awesome. We used to frequent Chinatown when I was younger, I’d love to go back.
  2. FINO: Brunch $15 / Lunch $15 / Dinner $35
the Spanish-style gourmet restaurant won’t disappoint. Brunch (salmon, eggs benedict, doughnut) and lunch (butternut squash bisque, salmon, and creme catalan) are just $15 each, dinner (app, sea bass, creme catalan) is $35. Interestingly, FINO may be the only one not offering choices in its menu, but hey, that’s some serious confidence.
  3. Bess Bistro: Lunch $15 / Dinner $35
Lunch features lots of choices, including the yum Croque Monseuir and for dessert bites of Walton’s cupcake-smackdown-winning delights. I love that Bess serves all local meats, even on their sandwiches, so obviously couldn’t let you miss out during ARW.
  4. You might not try it otherwise, but you should:

  5. Fabi & Rosi: Dinner $25
The year-old German restaurant has stayed relatively under the radar, but its ARW menu is a steal with tons of local ingredients, including meats, and preparations you likely haven’t experienced much of.
  6. Finn & Porter: Dinner $35
Long a looking-to-impress business lunch standby, Finn & Porter’s menu lets you get a sushi sampler as an appetizer and Chilean Sea Bass as an entree, among other choices. An easy way to sample the goods sans expense account.
  7. Judge’s Hill: Dinner $25
I think I list Judge’s Hill as a place to try every time the opportunity comes up … yet I still never have. Onion soup and coffee-rubbed pork tenderloin tickle my fancy on this ARW menu.
  8. My Usual Faves:

  9. Carillon: Dinner $35
Haven’t I raved about it enough? Looks like they’ve got everything ever on their menu, and you can just throw any of it together to make a fabulous meal. That Josh Watkins kid sure loves to play around with his menu.
  10. Max’s Wine Dive: Dinner $35
Max ‘n Cheese, Shrimp ‘n Grits, Ancho Chile Brownie. Do it.
  11. Perla’s: Dinner $35
Last year I complained that they shortchanged their ARW menu, but this year they’re offering lots of goodies: oysters, the lobster roll, salmon, and any dessert. Sounds like one of Austin’s most nationally-heralded restaurants is coming back to its roots.
  12. Roaring Fork at Stonelake: Lunch $15 / Dinner $35
Site of my infamous food coma, how could I not list Roaring Fork? They have a Niman Ranch (happy) pork tenderloin and a Parmesan-crusted Swordfish on their dinner menu. However would I decide between the two??

Of course, you can never go wrong with TRIO …

Austin is a Beer Town

Beer Connoisseur Magazine makes its national debut with its Spring Issue Release Party at Independence Brewing Company in Austin! Taste Independence Brewing Company beer while mingling with magazine staff, listening to live music, enjoying Austin eats, and raise money for the Haiti recovery efforts by joining in raffles.

Bad to the Bone … Bbbbbad …

Quite literally, the three chefs involved in this Bad to the Bone Throwdown are about three of the biggest stars the entire state of Texas has … so the chance to taste their food in a competition means one happy belly.

Each chef will choose a preferred ingredient, then will create a dish that includes all three of the chef-picked ingredients which could range anywhere from peanuts to oysters.

Audience participants and a panel of noted culinary experts will sample the dishes and use live text voting to determine the winning chef. A live video feed will project all of the kitchen stage action onto Stubb’s stage canopy so the audience can see close-ups of the food preparation as well as the live feed for the text voting results. The DJ, el john Selector, will be spinning bad-to-the-bone soul, funk and world beats to keep the tempo pumping until final votes have been cast.

Once the winner is announced, the evening melds into a rockin’ live concert with Charanga Cakewalk, a seven-piece Latin band featuring master multi-instrumentalist Michael Ramos and known for pan-Latin tunes that dive into deep, urban grooves.

On tap:

  • David Bull, named as one of Food & Wine magazine’s Top Ten Best New Chefs in 2003; now Bolla at the Stoneleigh Hotel in Dallas’ executive chef. Author of Bull’s Eye on Food Interactive Cookbook and former executive chef at The Driskill Grill in Austin.
  • Shawn Cirkiel, executive chef of Austin’s Parkside Restaurant, recently named by Bon Appetit magazine as one of the “Hot 10 New American Taverns”
  • Paul Petersen, star of TLC’s BBQ Pitmasters and author of Keeper of the Flame Interactive Cookbook. Petersen was also former executive chef of Café Cenzio at the Gage Hotel.

Originally scheduled for Jan 15 but rained out, Bad to the Bone is this Saturday, Feb 27th, still at Stubb’s. Tickets are $35 and available at www.stubbsaustin.com. Ticket sales will benefit the Sustainable Food Center which helps more than 20,000 Central Texans access healthy, affordable and locally grown food annually.

$35 a ticket is a veritable steal for the food of these fellas.

Road Trip Time: San Antonio

Fabulous Liz Lambert has bought the historic Havana Riverwalk Inn on–where else?–San Antonio’s River Walk. Lambert is the creative force behind our iconic Hotel San José and our new, chichi Hotel Saint Cecilia. The woman will work her magic fast: the 22,000- square-foot hotel will have 27 rooms and is due to reopen in April 2010 as Hotel Havana.

Current hotel

The history: in 1914, the Mediterranean Revival structure was opened as an elegant residence hotel by Edward Franz Melcher, the son of a German immigrant. It is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places. “I have loved the Havana for many years, and I am excited to be a part of its long story,” said Lambert. “For those who miss the downstairs bar, know that we won’t keep it closed for long.”

St. Arnold’s Pub Crawl

The lovely Jennie of MisoHungry Makes it With Moonshine has posted a fantastic description of the upcoming St. Arnold’s Pub Crawl. For those who don’t know, St. Arnold’s is a Houston brewery started by a couple of Rice grads … so needless to say, I drank my fair share of free St. A’s in college. Anyway, check out Jennie’s post on the 1st ever Austin Pub Crawl!

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 6pm-10pm

My fave info from the post:

Now, for our annual tips for maximum enjoyment:

1. PRECOATING: Try to eat something before commencing the crawl. Our first stop is good for this!

2. PACING: Too many Saint Arnolds at the first stop is a critical strategic mistake. This is known as “Sprinting Too Early” which is not advisable in this, a distance event. Can have negative repercussions later.

3. MANNERS: Be patient with bar staff. Remember, lots of people will be descending upon a poor crew. They will be working as fast as they can. Also, it is considered very good manners to tip well everywhere you go. This creates good “beerma”.

4. CASH: Bring cash! This pleases the bar staff and the people standing behind you. Cash is fast. Credit cards are slow. They cannot run tabs for all you people.

Tips 5-8 are available here.
