24 Diner a Total Win

24 Diner opened up to much fanfare in the old Waterloo restaurant space next to the existing Waterloo Records. A 24-hour diner? With locally-sourced foods? A collective “whaaaaat?” eminated from Austin.

A collective “woooow” eminated shortly thereafter, upon the restaurant’s actual opening when it proved that its chicken-and-waffles, hearty breakfasts, great beer selection, and killer desserts and shakes went hand-in-hand with fast casual convenience AND local farms (there are so many offerings, it’s not hard to imagine why naysayers said it wouldn’t work).

My dish, Hash, was outstanding. Potatoes, cheese, bacon, sausage (I requested mine without), and two fried eggs. Just $1.89 more for (no-bean) chili, which I promptly added. It came out just looking like shredded beef, not chili, but it was OUTSTANDING. Behold:

This entire dish knocked my socks off. I eat a lot of “scrambles” or “hashes” for breakfast, with all kinds of interesting things in them, but the flavors in this dish were just to-die-for. (Paleoers, no, I didn’t eat the toast … and I tried to eat as few of the potatoes as possible)

I also ordered a side of roasted brussel sprouts:

I love me some brussel sprouts, and these didn’t disappoint.

My companion ordered the vegetarian stuffed swish chard, which looked awesome:

We also had one of the friendliest, happiest waiters I’ve ever had. In any restaurant, anywhere. A definite plus, as the entire staff seems delighted to be there.

Check out asap.

  1. Saw this place at the last LuLu bootcamp..I’ll have to give it a go after reading your review. Brussels..YUM!

  2. Thanks for this — we were wondering what this location had evolved into (and clearly too distracted by the hustle of that area to have caught its new name). Looking forward to brunch soon!

  3. 24 diner has gotten terrible reviews elsewhere

  4. Eek!! Yours is the second rave review of 24 Diner I’ve read, Lyssa. And, I thought I was the lone fan of brussel sprouts in Austin, possibly in the world! But now I see I have a companion in you. A brussel sprout-appreciating companion. We are few and far between.

I can’t wait to go eat at this place. Maybe manana!
