Because Gratitude Makes You 25% Healthier

At least that’s what my mom told me she read in a study …

Things I’m Thankful For:

  • My amazing, wonderful, big-word-using, quick-witted family
  • Denali, the lovably quirky mutt who sleeps with her paws in the air
  • My amazing, wonderful, GRE-word-using, quick-witted, silly Vermonster
  • My ridiculous, athletic, big-word-using, sarcastic, witty friends
  • Hey! That’s Not My Flag! and the Handfulls (football)
  • CrossFit (Central, Austin, TLSP, your Mom, I don’t care, I just love it)
  • Austin Post and Sideline and getting paid to create really cool, fun stuff
  • Twitter, because 140-character quips are really all you need
  • *And YOU, dear blog readers, because comments from you can really make my day!

If you came here looking for Black Friday deals, don’t worry, I’ve got those too … well, by “I’ve got” I mean I compiled all the other news stories in town and summarized them here. Ultimately I can only tell you guys that my takeaway is this: unless you ENJOY the craziness, crowds, and EXPERIENCE of doing Black Friday, the deals are simply not worth it. You can get similar deals all season long with research and coupon maximization (aka retailmenot.com).

BUT you don’t get the same glory from telling the “I drove to Best Buy, parked three spots away, and was out in ten minutes” story as you do the “I camped out in line three spots from the front door, slept there for nine hours, and got THE LAST BIG SCREEN TV IN THE ENTIRE STORE, which I waited in line for another three hours to purchase. ROCK ON!” story. So there’s that.

*There are obviously many more things for which I am thankful, like lululemon yoga pants that are long enough for my legs, Whole Foods salad bar that contains cooked white-meat chicken, that stupid cat that double-digit-dumps on everything in my room, my new favorite pair of jeans, Britney’s comeback, TiVO, and blackberries the fruit not the phone, but I don’t have time or room to list them here. Perhaps it will become a new sidebar one day …

Turkey Creek = Happy Doggie

I love taking Nali to one of the nicest off-leash dog trails around, a quick 2.5-mile trail out at Emma Long Park called Turkey Creek (http://www.austinparks.org/apfweb/park.php?parkId=666). With recent rains, the creek was flowing quickly, the weather was a perfect 65 degrees, and my Vibrams were perfect water-mud-rock combo shoes.

Nali, my beloved rescue mutt pup, used to be scared of water. But bringing her to Turkey Creek where she HAD to cross the water and letting her play with other dogs at Red Bud Isle who aren’t afraid has really brought her out of her shell.

Happy dog=Happy Lyssa.

I like to think I am invincible. Things YOU should do today.

Despite all evidence to the contrary, turns out, I’m not invincible.

Well damn.

Though I’d like to be at the Gables Sneak Peek or a Whole Foods tour in honor of Dishola’s Dish-for-Dish (review a dish already, people!) or a happy hour birthday party at Piranha (man do I love their sushi) or Beer and Bingo at Jo’s, I am going to be on a couch, toilet paper roll nearby (don’t have Kleenex around), lemon-infused water in hand. Yes, allergies and/or a cold have knocked me down.

In my honor, YOU should please enjoy one of these fun Wednesday activities:

Drag Queen “Sapphire” will be reading the numbers, there’ll be a DJ and great prizes.

Beer is $3 and cards are $1; all money from the cards goes to Caritas.

AYC Membership Mixer and Toy Drive

Austin Post Goes Real Time

I’m constantly evangelizing about Austin Post – an online newspaper by, of, and for the people – where anyone can post, comment, vote, etc. At its finest, it’ll be totally edited, reported on, and curated by its readers. (It’s totally not there yet, but it will get there)

Anyway, today Austin Post announced its Real Time Reporting functionality that is both an iPhone app (AP 2.0) and a widget on the site (www.austinpost.org). It’ll do this: when I’m sitting in traffic and there’s a crazy man trying to commit suicide off the bridge at Mopac & 290 and traffic is backed up for miles and miles because negotiators have been talking to him for three hours and I’m wondering why I’m sitting there because I don’t know about the crazy man, I turn to twitter. But I have to find someone else on mopac but further up, or someone who is listening to the news, between the tweets about cool links and 140-character ironies and Gossip Girl and Crossfit (ok, that’s what my twitter account looks like). So Austin Post Real Time Reporters categorize everything when they submit, which means if you want to find out what’s going on with Traffic, you look no further than the City category with its #traffic hashtag. Beautiful.

Download the app at the iTunes app store, check out the widget here.

BEST OF ALL, YOU CAN WIN $$ BY SUBMITTING REPORTS! Here’s the breakdown:

  • November 17-20: use #traffic to report on congestion, accidents, and more – win $50 gas card
  • November 21-22: use #city to voice your opinion on city issues and politics – win $50 Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf gift card
  • November 23-27: use #food to show off your Thanksgiving spread or a restaurant dish – win $50 gift card to the restaurant of your choice
  • November 28-Dec 2: use #fitness to talk about your workout or post a picture of you working out - $50 lululemon gift card

Ahh, spicy: Dulce Vida Tequila

There’s a new tequila in town, and it ain’t like those other vaqueros. Dulce Vida tequila is pure, plain and simple: it’s 100-proof, nothing but the distilled juice of organic agave plants from Mexico. No sugars, no water, no vodka to cut it; it’s just tequila.
Agua Dulce Reposado
(Pictured: Dulce Vida Reposado, aged for a year in used American oak barrels)

Excepting the blanco (the youngest of the tequilas), Dulce Vida tequilas are aged in used American whiskey barrels from Maker’s Mark or Jim Beam. The American Oak infuses the tequila with a woodiness that helps curb the edge found in many tequilas. The reposado is aged for a year; the anejo for two or more. Served with a slice of orange with cinnamon dusted on top, it’s delicious neat and over ice.

But at Austin’s Peche, already a hotspot of mixology with its focus on absinthe, award-winning bartender Russell (fill me in if you know his last name) has come up with three signature cocktails that perfectly complement the reposado’s flavor.

My favorite is the Jalapeño Hibiscus Martini:
Hibiscus Jalapeno martini
Dried hibiscus and agave are boiled together like tea and reduced to make a hibiscus syrup

Muddled jalapeño

St. Germaine
Dulce Vida Reposado
Fresh lime

The St. Germaine representative happened to be at Peche, so he explained that St. Germaine is an artisanal liqueur that tastes like grapefruit, pear, tropical fruit but is made of Elderflower, a flower in France that blooms just 2 weeks of the year. Soaked in grapes, pressed with eau de vie, St. Germaine, like wines, has a slightly different flavor each year based on the vintage’s crop. It also has half the sugar of other cordials.

Sangrita
SangritaNot to be confused with Sangria, this is a tequila-infused fruit and tomato mixture closer to a Bloody Mary than fruity wine. In Mexico they serve Sangrita as a social drink with 3 glasses lined up like the Mexican flag – lime, tequila, and the mix (that’s green, white, red) – and drinkers sip a little from each to mix the drink in their mouths.

Here, however, it’s served together, the tomato, grapefruit, lime, orange juice, chili powder, sriricha, and jalapeño blending with the reposado and sitting in a salt-rimmed martini glass.

Margarita Martini

Dulce margarita
No tequila would be complete without its own signature margarita … Dulce Vida’s features the usual lime juice, but instead of orange liqueur, bartenders light orange peel on fire and allow the orange’s essential oils to drip into the glass, infusing the margarita with its signature orange flavor.

Though they just launched two months ago, Dulce Vida tequilas are available all over Austin already. Buy it yourself as Twin Liquor, Spec’s, Davenport Wine and Spirits, and Chris’ Liquor.

Or head to one of my favorite bars that carries it (Lanai!) and ask Jack for an L7 margarita with Dulce Vida. Splurge on the anejo if you can, it’s the smoothest and best.

Other bars with Dulce Vida: Peche, The Ranch, Malverde, Cedar Door, Phoenix, Shiner Saloon, Joe’s Bar, Canvas, Madison, Annie’s West, Touche, Cheers Shot Bar, Republic Live; and restaurants: Ranch 616, Hilton Austin, Gueros, Kenichi, Beso Cantina, Matts El Rancho, Tres Amigos (360), Saba Blue Mesa,  Baby Acapulcos (290/35 and Barton Springs Locations), Texas Embassy, Stompin’ Ground, Jorge’s Mexican.
