Weekend: Football, Wheatsville

UT v Colorado:

6:15 Gametime

This week’s tailgate suggestion: Tailgate 2009 presented by YMBL and AYC, 2pm

The Young Men’s Business League and the Austin Young Chamber of Commerce are teaming up for a big-time party on the 40 Acres! Check the parking lot on 17th Street between Congress and Colorado Streets, look for the Big White Bus covered in YMBL/AYC banners in the parking lot facing 17th Street. Friends Maker’s Mark and Budweiser/Brown Distributing will be on hand, along with incredible BBQ on the smoker, football on the TVs, and all of your favorite tailgate games.

A donation of $10 will get you all your drinks, food, and fun before, during (and maybe even after) the game. For more information go to www.AustinYC.org

Wheatsville’s Grand Re-Opening Party

Haven’t gotten ahold of exactly what’s happening at the party, but expect lots of sampling and great deals!

Also, there’ll be a Food Drive for the Capitol Area Food Bank during the party. Please bring non-perishable food item(s) to the event and they’ll make sure it goes to a person or family in need!

My Fit Foods to Austin

Just minutes after a grueling Fight Gone Bad session, I could barely think about eating, much less actively putting a gluten-free, 93% lean ground turkey taco with low fat cheese into my mouth. But when my very favorite spectator insisted we try them, I got one, and told him “I don’t think I can eat it, but I’ll just take one bite.”

Ha. The poor spectator did not get the extra taco he thought he would, as I proceeded to scarf that thing down. What was it? A perfectly-proportioned, Zone/Paleo friendly taco from healthy Houston spot My Fit Foods, slated to open two locations in Austin before the year winds down. A Westlake location will open mid-October, and a 4200 Lamar (how great is that block going to be? Tacodeli, Uchiko, and now this?) My Fit Foods will open in November.

My Fit Foods

http://www.myfitfoods.com/

MyFitFoods was started with one mission in mind: to make being healthy simpler. They weigh and measure proportions so that they fit Zone requirements–which doesn’t mean that you’ve got to be on the Zone diet to enjoy then, but does mean that your body gets a balanced amount of nutrients.

MyFitFoods features more than 32 meals on the menu and cooks seven days per week. You can order meals ahead of time using their simple website, or you can stop by a store front for grab-and-go choices.

Jester King Free Beer Tasting

Draught House Tasting

Yeah, the flyer pretty much says it all. Really wish I was in town for this, love trying new beers! Plus look at the food sponsors …

A smidge more:

Jeffrey Stuffings, a homebrewer with dreams of going pro, has started raising funds to make those dreams come true. Operating under the name of Jester King Brewery, Jeff “hopes to help make Texas (especially Austin) a craft beer destination similar to the likes of Colorado and Oregon. With your help and a commitment to top-quality craft beer, it’s possible. (From http://craftaustin.blogspot.com/)

I’m Leavin’ on a Jet Plane

… to Vermont, land of Cabot cheese, Ben & Jerry’s (and newly legalized gay marriage), Magic Hat beer, maple syrup, and this mythical leaf-shedding known as FOLIAGE. Purple mountains majesty, anyone? Apparently my winter wardrobe is all purple, hot pink, and pom-poms … um, in other words, novelty winter clothes because here I just wear what I normally wear and put a coat over it.

Anyway, I’ll keep warm in those hot pink pom-pom mittens. We’ll also be making a stop at the lovely Four Seasons in Boston … I can only imagine it’s every bit as wonderful as ours here.

While I’m eating, drinking, hiking, eating, and generally relaxing, don’t worry–I still have my eye on what’s hot (literally, hello it’s 94 degrees today) in Austin, and the blog posts won’t stop. Enjoy!

ACL Recaps: by day, with photos, and beer

Over at Austin Post, we Real Time Reported on the whole fest–live updates throughout. Check out the new features, and my full-length article recaps:

Day 3

Day 2

Day 1

Strategy Session

Facebook Album

And I will not lie, every single morning (lie: afternoon) I got dropped off at Barton Springs & Lamar, and every single early afternoon I walked past Uncle Billy’s and snagged a To-Go Beer. The Agave Wit was delicious and far more worth $5 than a LoneStar inside ACL.

I’d heard great things about Uncle Billy’s beer, but never stopped in. Until now. And I will be going back, as they brew a bunch of signatures from scratch AND offer cheap flights of their brews. At last weekend’s Great American Beer Festival, head brewer Brian Peters’ Uncle Billy’s “Hell In Keller” kellerbier bested 26 other entrants in the “Kellerbier/Zwickelbier” category to WIN! With nearly 500 breweries and 3,300-plus beers represented in 78 categories, The Great American Beer Festival Gold is quite the honor, and “Hell in Keller” was one of only four Texas beers to earn medals (2 golds) at the GABF.

Follow Uncle Billy’s on twitter.com/UncleBillys and be the first to learn about awesome things like To Go Beers during ACL.

Man Shops Globe / You Hang Out in Your Neighborhood

Man Shops Globe Flyer

Talk about a dream job … this dude travels around the world, picks out cool stuff for Anthropologie stores around the world, and now they’re filming him doing it. “Man Shops Globe” debuts October 7 on the Sundance Channel.

October 6, Anthropologie at 601 North Lamar Blvd is hosting a preview party from 7-9pm with tons of goodies.

The documentary-style series follows Keith Johnson, Anthropologie’s Buyer-at-Large, on his adventures abroad in search of artists and artisans to commission for original works, as well as extraordinary antiques and found objects.

RSVP by email: ManShopsGlobeAustin@laforce-stevens.com

Staying close to home more your style? It’s Neighborhood Night Out, so go mingle with your neighbors! Neighborhood associations across the country work with the city to set up block parties, and just as-a-for-example, in my ‘hood Bryker Woods, there will be free pizza and hotdogs, adults BYOB. Children are encouraged to ride bikes, skates and scooters; all participants can win special prizes. The Austin Police Department, Austin Fire Department and EMS have been invited to exhibit their vehicles and demonstrate firsthand their vital importance to our city. Get out and meet people!

ACL Afterparties

But Lyssa, I thought couldn’t handle ACL? According to last year’s ACL post, where, BTW, I share some tips to live by ifidosaysomyself, I have retired from ACL. But friends, as evidenced by my frantic tweeting to score a 3-day pass (done! love you, twitter), I am back on the wagon. I am a journalist, after all, and assignments call. Check out austinpost.org all weekend long for live updates! (oh, and find me at the fest, I’ve got some BADASS swag to give away) Without further ado …

It’s not the spreadsheet-worthy affair SXSW is, but this year marks only the second year there are Official ACL Afterparties. Most of them cost $$, and some are already sold out, but they all feature ACL bands.

Of course, where there’s official, there’s unofficial, and those are the kind I like. These are usually free shows with free booze, and you’ve gotta RSVP. Sometimes that means you’ve gotta wait in long lines to get in. But they’re usually worth it.

Live at Seaholm: RSVP @ http://www.liveatseaholm.com/index.html

You’re living under a rock if you haven’t heard about Rare Magazine’s Live at Seaholm Friday-and-Saturday night afterparty. It’s in Seaholm, as in the long-empty power plant on Caesar Chavez. It’s sure to be crazy-crowded, but big bands like Broken Social Scene make it stand-in-line-worthy (Friday night). Plus, who doesn’t want to see what’s inside the plant that’s been abandoned for over 50 years??

Jelly: RSVP @ http://www.jellynyc.com/nasa/

nasa_flier

imeem: RSVP @ www.imeem.com/live

Friday, October 2, imeem is taking over The Independent in Austin (501 Brushy Street,Austin). Featuring The Knux along with Bird Peterson, Table Manners Crew and DJ Sober. Free photobooth with pictures by Annie Ray.

Daytime (12-6p) Music Lounge / Nighttime (10p-2a) Rock the Vote: RSVP @ musiclounge@bmfmedia.com

Presented by Big Green house, free drinks, burgers, ice cream, cotton candy, lawn games and music by The Riverboat Gamblers, Sock Hop DJs, Ume, The Soldier Thread & DJ Thibault.
