Spiral Dynamics – Dr. Don Beck Tonight

There is a scientific theory called Spiral Dynamics integral which enumerates exactly how and why our perspectives about the world change as the circumstances and problems we face shift up and down in complexity. Dr. Don Beck, the champion of this theory, is coming to Austin this Wednesday (tonight) to tell us how we can use it to deal with the toughest issues of our time and make the world a more understanding and peaceful place for ourselves and everyone else in it.

[Pause] My brother is really into Spiral Dynamics and Integral Theory. I know very little about it, except that sometimes strange people come over to my house for their meetings. Not all of them are strange, but you know. Anyway, my brother said this Dr. Beck guy is “one of the scholars I respect most in the world,” which means a lot from a guy with a religious studies degree from Rice (I say this without sarcasm–I would argue that reli majors have read most of the world’s major scholars). [End Pause]

Dr. Beck applied the theory of Spiral Dynamics to help end apartheid in South Africa. He continues to use Spiral Dynamics to guide new, integral thinking in some of the most complex and dangerous global hot-spots, such as Israel-Palestine. This event will undoubtedly be inspiring and eye opening as we begin to understand how we too can use Spiral Dynamics to find creative solutions to whatever comes our way. Dr. Beck promises to discuss the environmental challenges right alongside Longhorns so it’s going to be fun. He’ll be speaking in Austin at the Authenticity Gallery (9th and Congress).

More info about the event, which costs $25, can be found at http://drdonbeck.eventbrite.com/. This is also where you can buy tickets.

  1. Dear Lyssa,

Dr. Don Beck is indeed a fountainhead of valuable insights on the state of the world and the human condition. Congratulations on being able to book a personal appearance by him.

While he might wish to contest this assessment, I’d suggest that Dr. Don’s point of view mostly originates from a worldview from the “right” (sacrificial) side of the Gravesian values spiral. This is also the side that produces the worldviews where Spiral Dynamics and all (to my knowledge) its variations originated.

But there is a very distinctive “take” on all things Gravesian originating from worldviews on the “left” (expressive) side of the spiral, and that is the work that Dr. Paul Kordis and I have been doing.

Many devotees of Dr. Graves who are interested in a more direct, accessible, feet-on-the-ground modeling of his theory have found this in our work at Brain Technologies. We have been producing brain training and thinking skills development materials centered on the Graves spiral model for more than 30 years. And have written five books on the topic.

The best known involves our best-selling book, Strategy of the Dolphin: Scoring a Win in a Chaotic World, (now out in eight languages, the latest being Turkish) by myself and Dr. Kordis.

There is also Code of the Monarch: An Insider’s Guide to the Real Global Business Revolution, also by myself and Dr. Kordis (published in German by Junfermann Verlag as Der Schlüssek zur Globalisierung: handbuch für den Wandel (ISBN 3-87387-184-X). The work is the second in Junfermann’s Medienanthropologie series, joining Marshall McLuhan’s and Bruce R. Power’s The Global Village).

The latest book-length work about Graves and his theory is my book, The Mother of All Minds: Leaping Free of an Outdated Human Nature. One reviewer of MOAM, Noel Odou, Author of Magnificently Insignificant (Brolga, 2009), Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, has noted:

“The Mother of All Minds is a fascinating, intricate and brilliant work, yet as readable as a good novel. It is both philosophically challenging and at the same time practically useful to people who are serious about wanting to grow and adapt to the new world we live in. I found it as impactful as a punch in the face but not without a sense of humour. Dudley Lynch may well be doing for Clare Grave’s theory what Daniel Goleman did for Emotional Intelligence.”

And we have two assessment tools based on Dr. Graves’ theory:

    MindMaker6®, a printed tool,

and the online assessment, the Yo!Dolphin! Worldview Survey™.

I’d love to have you and your readers stop by our website and visit a world of Graves that is much more straight-forward and applicable to real-world uses and possibilities than is the case with many of his devotees’s commentaries and suggestions.

  2. Hi Lyssa,

Had fun reading about the “strange” people who come to your house with your brother…I might fit the profile :)

I head the Center for Human Emergence-Middle East and Dr. Beck’s partner in the Israel/Palestine initiative since 2005. Here, I would like to make a correction to Mr. Lynch’s comment :

    Mr. Lynch,

I find it disheartening to see someone with your background making claims on the work of a pioneer like Dr. Beck without a thorough study of his work and his 30 years of research and application of the Gravesian biopsychosocial systems theory, as well as the further development of Graves’ theory through Spiral Dynamics Integral. As you might know, Graves and Beck spent 10 years together working with different organizations and researching the broader aspects of the theory through real life applications.

Your comments about the “sacrificial” aspect of Don’s work, vs. the “expressive” aspect of yours, unfortunately shows a misinterpretation of the Gravesian system. There’s no either/or in this theory or its application; When we are addressing a real life situation, we address a combination of value-systems within people and within cultures.

I invite you and others to look at different applications of the Graves/Beck theory throughout the world at http://www.humanemergence.org.

For an idea of the work we are doing in Israel/Palestine you can browse http://www.CHE-mideast .

  3. Elza,

Thank you for your thoughtful and sweet response!
