Teacher Thursday: The Lennings

The LenningsWhen adorable drummer Ross, huband of blogger at last week’s Bleet Up, started telling me about his band The Lennings and how they have this great new EP, Geographic Tongue, I gave him my familiar line: “sounds cool, but I don’t really cover music unless it’s got another angle to it, or I think it’s really cool.” I asked him what was cool and different about the Lennings, and he said:

  • We’ve been on the scene for about three years and are now looking to the blog community to help connect us with new listeners.
  • The story of our coming to be a band is not too wild.  All five of us are teachers and basically met through that industry rather than the music scene.
  • That’s all I can think of for now.
An Electroacoustic / Rock / Folk band made up of teachers? Um, yes, that’s interesting. Interesting enough that it’s worth checking out their video premiere & show at Moose Lodge tonight, starting at 8pm. Directions: http://www.austinmooselodge.org/directions.html

Andy Warhol’s Birthday and More Bananas

Thursday, August 6th marks the 81st anniversary of Andy Warhol’s birth.

Warhol Party

Don’t know why it’s a banana and certainly not AW style, but this birthday party thrown by Massive Beacon, the organizers of ATX Emerge and ATX Converge features free pizza, on-site “live garment printing,” and potentially free booze, so who’d complain? A good way to celebrate the king of pop art … is that a faux pas now?

Austin Young Chamber of Commerce + ’80s Membership Mixer

A few months ago, I got an email alerting me that the Austin Young Chamber of Commerce is now live and accepting members: www.austinyc.org. With so many organizations out there, what makes the AYC unique? One of the founders and a friend of mine, Johnny Rodgers, promises AYC will foster business to business relationships as well as keep you informed with what’s really going on in Austin. “I feel like there is a real opportunity here to bring together like-minded individuals from all over Austin and connect them with each other,” he says.

Work Hard. Play Hard. That is the motto of the AYC.

Curious? I missed the first, but tonight there is a second AYC Membership Mixer followed by “Rock The ’80s” featuring LC Rocks. 6-8pm at Speakeasy, 412 Congress Avenue Austin, TX 78701. Drink specials extended until 8pm. Bring your business card to enter in a raffle for a free ticket to play in the AYC Poker Tournament on August 27th.

“She is one of the few couture milliners in the US.”

If that doesn’t interest you in an event invite, I don’t know what will. And just because sometimes we’re not Texan enough in keep-it-weird-but-cool-and-not-all-that-hick-stuff Austin, Second Street staple Beyond Tradition is hosting a cowboy culture event from 6-9pm this Wednesday.

The event centers on two designers. The first, Critic’s Choice for “Best Home Accessories Designer” (Austin Fashion Week 2009) award-winner Deborah Main, specializes in one-of-a-kind pillows. The “Dizzy Happy Summer Fun” collection features vintage souvenir scarves from the 1940s and 50s, each printed with bold imagery of the Wild West and nostalgic state landmarks (www.deborahmaindesigns.com). The second, Fashion Institute of Technology alum Laura Del Villaggio of Milli Starr, designs hats and headpieces … She is one of the few couture milliners in the US, practicing the old-world craftsmanship of hand-blocking straws and felts over carved wooden forms, and hand-stitching and draping trims.  Milli Starr recently introduced a line of western hats, inspired by the definitive lines of a cowboy’s trademark Stetson, but reinterpreted in the finest hand-woven straws and plush velour fur felts, then trimmed with rare vintage sequins, feathers, and ribbons. (www.millistarr.com).

There’ll be a fashion show and fiddle-playin’, and cowboys and cowgirls will enjoy true-Texas margaritas from Cantina Laredo and nibbles from III Forks and RIX Chocolates.

UPDATED with Video – Ford 2010 Taurus Meetup: 2 Reactions

I’ve got two different opinions that sprang from the 2010 Ford Taurus Meetup Sunday at Opal Divine’s, and both I agree with. Here we go (originally posted on AustinPost.org)

Frank says:

Ford Tackles Consumer Confidence: Can It Really Be as Good as Foreign Cars?

I was 16, looking at buying my first car, and the issue of the day was all American: Chevy versus Ford. Just a couple of years later, the issue became international: American versus Foreign, trying to decide between a Chevy and a VW Bug. My father had the deciding vote, so I bought Chevy the first time and American the second. Some things never change–we are still addressing the issue of American versus Foreign. Ford is setting up the feud with it’s re-creation of the Taurus.

I was invited to a gathering last evening to meet with several representatives of Ford to hear about and test drive the new 2010 Taurus. My first impression surprised me a little. The car has really impressive lines. Probably not the appropriate way to say it, but very BMW-ish. Actually, I would say something similar about its’ ride: tight and solid, like a Mercedes. I can’t help but make the comparisons to Foreign cars because that is all that I have driven for 30 years–after my father didn’t get the deciding vote. In my experience, Foreign cars have outclassed American cars forever. I think Ford is addressing that problem by having this 100 city tour to introduce people to their new Taurus. I think they have come up with a winner.

I particularly liked the feel of the cabin of the Taurus. The front bucket seat arrangement feels like sitting in a cockpit. Each seat has its’ own space, cradled by a high center console and surrounded by a dash that blends into the doors. The leather is sourced from the same supplier for Coach handbags, and it is soft with bold stitching. The dash is flush with instruments, presented to the driver at a nice sloping angle as opposed to a square face. The rear seat had plenty of room and accommodated three men taller than 6 foot.

I did not drive the car for long, but long enough to appreciate its solid feel and responsiveness. It has really nice acceleration with just the right blend of engine noise. It also has some very nice features. One that seemed particularly impressive was a system that works like the back up warning found in a number of other cars, but operates with a 360 degree radius using radar. It can be adjusted for distance and warns the driver of any obstacles in that range.

I think Ford has its’ job cut out for it to win back consumer confidence, but it created a nice contender in the war. And, you can’t beat that it starts out at $25K. The new Taurus is being delivered to showrooms this week. Check it out.

Ford Goes Social

I gathered myself up on Sunday afternoon to go to the Ford (as in the carmaker) 2010 Ford Taurus Meet/Tweet/Bleet Up! event at Opal Divine’s. The guy with me was willing to drive the new 2010 Ford Taurus, so we had an excuse to go see what Ford was up to. Among the bloggers there was the dryly hilarious Jefre Outlaw, who intrigued the group with stories of his stem cell transplant two months ago. And then we learned all about country dancing, which Mr. Outlaw has eagerly if not maybe a tad too early gone back to doing for fun. Did you know that there is country dancing competition in eight different categories? Anyway, I know I digressed from Ford, but it was a Blogger meet up after all!

Ford was represented by some nice young professional people, including the marketing manager, Mike Crowley, who although he said he had been with Ford for almost two decades, looked like he was barely over two decades old. Ford must treat ‘em well. The best I could figure about this little gig on the second floor lounge of Opal Divine’s is that Ford is trying to work the new social media game and hop onto some of that word of mouth internet frosting for the new Taurus. People in the group took the Taurus on a test drive, and apparently it is quite the sweet car and worth a little internet talking.

Whether this kind of meet up and test driving can create the buzz that Ford probably hopes for is still to be seen. I can’t help but wonder if one can really “capture” that blogger benefit and tweeter thread with planned meetings. I suppose that is the big question for most marketing people right now. Can we harness the stuff that creates the buzz, or does harnessing it kill the buzz? I will leave that to Ford to answer as they continue their 100 city tour of Blogger/Tweeter/Bleeter Test Drive meet ups!

I say: well here I am talking about the dang thing, you can hear what I have to say…

Sushi Zushi Opens Today!

… but I snuck in for the soft opening Saturday night and enjoyed some fantastic rolls amongst a few kinks to be worked out. Behold, the rolls:

Sushi rolls at Sushi ZushiSushi Zushi is a chain with outposts in Dallas and San Antonio; their Dallas-monikered Oak Lawn Roll was easily our favorite–and recommended by the server. It’s on the far left, then a Spider Roll, Summer Roll, Sushi Zushi riceless roll, and a Valentine’s Roll. I was excited that they offered rolls intended to be riceless, and their signature one at that. It didn’t disappoint, with crunchy asparagus lending a new texture to smooth fish, which really got to shine without rice.

The menu is far and away the most extensive sushi menu I’ve ever seen: Sushi Zushi Menu

BOTH SIDES. They have rolls grouped into specialty and then types of fish, and offer plenty of warm (cooked) appetizers and some “Japanese Comfort Food.” We didn’t try any of this, though I sort of regret that decision.

The two girls I was with ordered martinis: a sweet tea one that was good, and their signature cucumber, which was, in a word, bad. It was creamy and had sake in it, which was weird, and then was rimmed with spicy chili lime salt, which was, again, just weird. She disliked it so much that she sent it back and asked for a green tea martini, which was delicious–and strong!

Service was exceptionally friendly, which made up for our waitress’s obvious inexperience–ordered after drinks, appetizers nonetheless arrived before drinks. Then we waited for quite some time for the sushi. The timing could use some work. But it’s a soft opening, so we filled out a survey to let them know this, and I think they’ll have these kinks worked out soon if not for today’s Grand Opening.

Prices were all over the place: a Spider Roll was just $8 (cheap!) but a California Roll was $7-11 depending on what type of crab (expensive!) Edamame came in a tiny bowl and was $5. Drinks were between $7-10. Wine was probably the best drink bargain, at a reasonable $6-11 range by the glass. For me, it needs a second shot before I rule on its place in the downtown sushi pecking order.

It’s easy to access, next to Mean Eyed Cat on 5th. You can also ORDER ONLINE and they deliver all over town. Uh oh! www.sushizushi.com
