Frozen Yogurt is the New Cupcake

It’s bad. It’s the new trend. And I’m totally on the bandwagon.

My new frozen yogurt obsession started with an innocuous trip to the MamboBerry trailer on South Congress, where they serve yogurt that is frozen.

Absurd delicious. The whole fam, including the Cali Aunt and Uncle, loved it. Tart and sour with nuts and berries was perfect after dinner at Somnio’s. There are two flavors, plain and green tea, and just around 6 toppings offerings–keep up with their twitter for toppings deals.

So then I took that boy to YummyYo in the 360 building downtown one night, and we were both hooked. I questioned if the yogurt is really yogurt that is frozen as opposed to frozen yogurt, but it says there are live cultures and bacteria in it, so it must be good, right? And they list the nutrition info above the self-serve soft-serve machine. They had the tart flavors like the trailer, but also sweeter flavors like pistachio, vanilla, chocolate, and peanut butter. These rotate. Plus, they have blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, kiwi, cherries, lychee, mango, and tons of candy and nut toppings. And Reese’s peanut butter sauce.

This is the typical trendy yogurt shop: self-serve frozen yogurt and self-sere toppings, you pay by the ounce, and the interiors are fairly spartan. All concrete floors and tiny tiles on the walls.

Anyway, after deciding that frozen yogurt is the new cupcake, I had to make sure I wasn’t missing out on an even better yogurt experience, so my bro, the jane, and I went to Yogurt Planet in the Triangle. A few more flavors, similar toppings. I declared it better than YummyYo (a declaration I have since vacillated over).

THEN, my bro and the jane went to The Yogurt Spot on Guadalupe & 28th without me, and THEY said it was the best, so I had to try it myself. So that boy and I went to check it out, and I have to agree–it’s the best. Which is fortunate, because it’s coming to 5th & Lamar too, in the old Ben & Jerry’s spot. They have 16 flavors, the most of any of the spots, and the usual suspects on the toppings. But the decision-maker for me was the flavors: the Pecan flavor at Yogurt Spot is divine. Rich and light and buttery and sweet but not too sweet … it’s excellent. The green tea and blueberry are new faves too. I’m sitting there right now (yep, visit #2 in as many days), and I’m hearing people all around talk about the deliciousness that is the Pecan. Ahhhh.

That boy maintains that YummyYo is better than Yogurt Spot. I say I’ll take either one any day!

  1. I love MamboBerry! I think it’s great that they use Austin’s own White Mountain Yogurt to make their fro-yo. Another place worth trying is Tomunchi (1701 W Parmer Ln # 105 Austin, TX 78727). They have fun toppings like Lychee, and lots of flavors.

  2. I’m glad that FroYo is the new cupcake. Don’t get me wrong: I love cupcakes, but the sugar high crash is not that fun. :(

I’m a fan of MamboBerry cause 1.) I’m off SoCo and 2.) White Mountain yogurt is tart and local.

  3. Tomunchi is soo delicious. Cant remember what it is called but there is this incredible flavor that is purple but strangely enough taste just like sweet popcorn. For me its becoming an addiction.

  4. I have to admit that I am soooo behind on this trend… I’ve yet to try any of these! I think this means we need to schedule a fro-yo date, asap!

  5. awesome! i used to live right by the yogurt spot..i need to go back and try me some of this deliciousness

  6. Sounds like I need to make a trip up to Parmer for some Tomunchi … can’t be making judgments on the “best in town” without having visited them all ;-)

  7. I have to agree with you that Yogurt Spot tops Planet Yogurt! Mambo Berry is the king for me though in Austin – it tastes exactly like Pinkberry. I just wish they had A/C.

Looks like you beat us to the punch on this one, but we did a slightly more extensive writeup on the local yogurt shops as well on Fooding Blog.

  8. Tomunchi is my Sat cheat treat! They have FF Cheese Cake, Cake Batter, lots if fruity flavors AND a couple odd yet tasty flavors.

    I’m obsessed with that place….

  9. Hey, just found your site the other day via my blogger friend TUWABVB. Happy to find someone covering the must-see, must-do events in town!

I’m a huge fro yo (can I say that without sounding twee?) fan from back when it was originally popular. Thrilled to see it making a comeback; thanks for the review.

  10. Just heard that a new self serve yogurt shop is coming to the mueller area off 51st ….its called Yo So Cool….can’t wait!
